  I am using format command in cmd to format a USB flash drive. • Rsync fails for files that start with underscore when destination is zfs

  everyone. I'm using rsync3.1.0pre1 on Mac OS X 10.8.5, and am trying to rsync one folder to another. The destination is a ZFS volume mounted via SMB. The problem I'm having is that files that start with underscore (e.g., '_filename.jpg') are not being successfully synced to the destination. I get the following error message: rsync: mkstemp "/path/to/destination/._filename.jpg.NUgYJw" failed: Permission denied (13) In this case, '_filename.jpg' does not make it to the destination. I understand that rsync creates hidden, temporary files at the destination which are preceded with '.' and have a random file extension appended on the end. But the original filename starts with '', not '.', and I haven't asked rsync to copy extended attributes / resource forks over (unless it always does it). The rsync command I'm using is: rsync -avE --exclude='.DS_Store' --exclude '.Trash' --exclude 'Thumbs.db' --exclude '._*' --delete /source/ /destination/ Has anyone found a way around this problem? • In Windows Command Prompt, how to get the last command that started with some letters?

  Let's say I entered a bunch of commands one after another: rm blah.txt pwd ls cd .. cd blah pwd If I want to get "rm blah.txt" to appear again without typing the whole thing again, I can press up 6 times. But is there a faster way? Can filter my command history based on some text? Intuitively, I would like to just type in r and then press up to search through my command history for only commands that started with "r".

I have read How do I make Bash my default shell on Ubuntu? and chsh seams to be the preferred way to go. But when I type chsh /bin/bash I get this message: chsh: unknown user /bin/bash And if I just type /bin/bash the Bash shell seams to work fine. How to change it?

  I run the following code in Eclipse IDE: public class HelloWorld { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Hello World!" ) ; } } And it renders the expected output. When getting into the command prompt (DOS) already in the directory, I type this javac HelloWorld.java And then this java HelloWorld And the output reads Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HelloWorld <wrong name:learning/HelloWorld> With a whole lot more errors, learning being the name of my general package. What's wrong? I have installed Eclipse x86 SDK 4.2.0 together bit with the latest JRE and JDK both in 64 bit as well.

• Why does starting a process in the background prevent me from recalling previous commands in the command prompt?

  I'm running asynchronous command prompt commands in cmd on Windows 7 64-bit and for some reason it effects my ability to recall previous commands just after I run them; for example: I might run something like: start /B rmdir /Q /S .\some_massive_directory And next I try to press the up arrow to recall the text of the previous command..but nothing happens...is this because whatever data structure is holding my commands is locked by the process I sent to the background, or is it because I am using a network mapped drive to run my command on?

• Can't see CMD.EXE on Windows 7

  I have a problem with Windows 7 and cmd.exe with these conditions: Logon as non admin user Launch cmd.exe I can see cmd.exe in task manager but it's invisible in the desktop and I don't know what to do, everything is fine and I can see cmd.exe if I do login with an admin account. I can see it in the "Process" tab but not in the "Application" tab, and if I launch five cmd.exe's, I see five processes, but from that tab I have no "Bring to front" or "Maximise" I can't find any WOW folder under C:\Windows, even with show hidden and system files enabled. I'm running Windows 7 32-bit running on a 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo E7500

  I'm trying to create a new Windows 7 Professional VHD which I can dual boot to, following Scott Hanselman's guide to creating a bootable VHD. When I get to the command prompt in the Windows 7 installation and try to create a VHD or select/attach a pre-created VHD file I get an error saying that diskpart can't find the path specified. If I try and switch to the c drive using cd c: I see c:\ x:\something\> I already have a Windows 7 Ultimate install and my C drive is an SSD – if that makes a difference.

  I've noticed through watching Wireshark that when an iPhone connects to a wifi network, it sends out a few IGMP/MDNS packets to 224.0.0.251 (LAN broadcast, I think). Is there any easy way to watch for these packets and then either run a script or send an event? Or, is the best way to just run a packet sniffer? Any simple ones that can send events or execute curl commands when a filter is triggered? • Windows preventing running of Telnet client

  At first, I had issues because Windows 7 doesn't install the Telnet client by default (also, SuperUser has a thread). So, after installing it (and restarting, like Windows asked, though completely unnecessary), I opened a command prompt, and went to run my new Telnet program. I enter telnet, and receive: C:\Users\[USER]>telnet 'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. "That's odd," I think to myself. So, in Windows explorer, I navigate to \Windows\System32 and see telnet.exe sitting in that folder. If I double-click on the executable file, the Telnet command prompt opens for me without a problem. So, I return to my Windows Command Prompt, and enter: C:\Users\[USER]>\Windows\System32\telnet.exe '\Windows\System32\telnet.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. And then (grep comes from cygwin): C:\Users\ryan\Desktop>dir \Windows\System32 | grep telnet Nothing. I've disabled UAC and have no idea why my Command Prompt is lying to me. Anyone experience something similar? To recap: In Windows 7, I have installed Telnet and can see it in my System32 folder, but cannot run it via a Command Prompt.

  I am using Centos5 running on a VMWare but whenever I choose to open the User Manager menu from System-Administration, an error message always displays The user database cannot be read. This problem is most likely caused by a mismatch between etc/passwd and /etc/shadow or /etc/group and /etc/gshadow/. The program will now exit. I am a Linux novice and have no idea how to fix this tiny issue. ANy help is thankful. Thank you.

• Windows DIR listing switch to exclude files in hidden folders

  I'm trying to get a list of files from a directory excluding files in hidden folders. With the following command, hidden folders are traversed even though I've set /A:-H to exclude hidden directories. Is there a different switch to stop them from being traversed too? dir "C:\SVN" /A:-H /w /b /s Alternatively, for this use case I know the name of the hidden folders I want to exclude, so if there is a way to exclude the folders by name ("\.svn\") that might have to suffice. • How can I delete Time Machine files using the commandline

  I want to delete some files/directories from my Time Machine Partition using rm, but am unable to do so. I'm pretty sure the problem is related to some sort of access control extended attributes on files in the backup, but do not know how to override/disable them in order to get rm to work. An example of the error I'm getting is: % sudo rm -rf Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir rm: Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir: Directory not empty rm: Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir/somefile: Operation not permitted There are a number of reasons I do not want to use either the Time Machine GUI or Finder for this. If possible, I'd like to be able to maintain the extended protection for all other files (I'd like not to disable them globally, unless I can re-enable once I've done my work).

  I have a Windows 2003 server running a SSH server (WRQ Reflection), how would I ssh to it and specify a specific drive letter? (like the D: drive) ex: from another workstation: ssh [email protected] d: When I do that it fails and I get this error: "exec request failed on channel 0" If I simply SSH to that same windowsbox without trying to specify a drive letter I get a Windows (CMD.EXE) command prompt shell on the C: drive. I can then run any windows command. Thanks

• Runas command for user without password

  I want to use the runas command in CMD and from Batch files to gain elevated permissions, but I don't have an admin password on my PC because it's my home computer and I'm the only user. Every time I try to use the runas command it asks me for a password, then tells me that blank passwords are not permitted, is there any way round this? I know I can just right click and select run as administrator, but I would much rather have a command that can do it as that is not always an option, and it's just a bit of a pain. I could just be making some kind of basic mistake as I'm not hugely experienced with command prompt, but I'm not completely clueless.

  Possible Duplicate: Is there a short cut command in Windows command prompt to get to the current users home directory like there is in Linux? Any short way to cd to the user specific directories in the command prompt. Like for e.g. in linux shell (debian based) we do a cd ~ and it instantly takes to the current logged user's directory /home/<username>. Anything to this effect on windows? ps: currently trying to do this on xp machines. If it differs for other machines, mention that too.

  Anyone know why doesn't the Windows command prompt window maximize to the full screen size? To the best of my knowledge, even in the new Windows 7 the command prompt window(cmd.exe) doesn't maximize to the full screen size like all other windows. This behavior is quite annoying for me, and I'm sure to many others as well. Note: The size of the command prompt window can be changed, but the size remains fixed regardless of the screen size.

  I want to re-run some jobs that completed prematurely under torque. These jobs are run through .job scripts (using qsub). However, I don't want to re-run a job which is already in the queue. Given a script filename, how can I know whether it is already in torque's queue (using qstat?) or not? I prefer to do it programmatically, of course, so any oneliner that searches for a given script name would be great. I will note that I can grep submit_args in qstat -f, but I can't get it to display the whole script name when it is too long. This is crucial. EDIT: I managed to solve it using the following command: qstat -x | perl -pi -e 's/\<\//\n/g' | grep job$ | grep -v submit_args | perl -pi -e 's/Job_Id\>\<Job_Name\>//' works because all my scripts end in the string "job".
