  • GUI won't load, but the desktop background loads. Can't access the terminal

    Having trouble with the Ubuntu GUI. I can log in just fine (see this)... everything looks normal there. But as soon as I put in my password, I get this. I tried a few different troubleshooting keyboard commands (ctrl+alt+t, crtl+alt+delete), and only the latter worked. I can interact with that window just fine, except I am unable to resize or move it. The first time I logged in, I got a dialog box that said, "Ubuntu has experienced an internal error. Send error report?" Doesn't say anything now. Yes I tried restarting it. Thanks a bunch, Michael EDIT: Trying to start a guest session leads to the same problem.

    This may seen like a weird question, but since we're challenged--as engineers--to constantly adapt to changing technologies, we always find ourselves buried in documentation. That said, we also need to consider that time is of the essence because people want their stuff fixed and improved with little hesitation if any. How do you get through lengthy manuals, books/manuals within a short period of time? Take for example: "The Linux Programming Interface," by Michael Kerrisk, which is roughly 1500 pages in length. How would you get through a monster of a book like this if you're pressed for time while still learning most of the material?

    In command line I wrote: michael@ubuntu:~$ firefox Firefox launched. Command prompt ($) disappeared. Then I pressed ^+z. The result was: [1]+ Stopped firefox Well, Firefox really stopped. It did not react anyhow. So, I could not close it by pressing the cross of the window. By the way, the menu items 'Tools', and 'Help' somehow showed some signs of life. They showed drop-down lists, but nothing more (no reaction to inner menu items). Well, I could not end Firefox through System Monitor. Could you comment on this case: what happened after pressing ^+z?

    If I use this code: using (StreamWriter streamWriter = new StreamWriter("Content/player.txt", true)) { streamWriter.Write("Hello!"); streamWriter.Close(); } The program will not actually add "Hello!" to the file. However, if I use this code: using (StreamWriter streamWriter = new StreamWriter("C:/Users/Michael/Documents/Visual Studio 2010/Projects/PuzzleGame/PuzzleGame/PuzzleGameContent/player.TXT", true)) { streamWriter.Write("Hello!"); streamWriter.Close(); } The program will work as intended and add "Hello!" to the save file. Is there any way I can do this without hardcoding the path?

  • how can I fix error: hd0 out of disk?

    I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a netbook - Acer AS 1410. After a download session, I restarted the computer and it said: error: hd0 out of disk. Press any key to continue... I pressed everything, but it's just frozen there. Any idea what's wrong with it and what I can do to fix it? I haven't been able to run my computer at all since it's frozen like that. Help please!     I need to find the non-ASCII characters from a UTF-8 string. my understanding: UTF-8 is a superset of character encoding in which 0-127 are ascii characters. So if in a UTF-8 string , a characters value is Not between 0-127, then it is not a ascii character , right? Please correct me if i'm wrong here. On the above understanding i have written following code in C : Note: I'm using the Ubuntu gcc compiler to run C code utf-string is xvab c long i; char arr[] = "xvab c"; printf("length : %lu \n", sizeof(arr)); for(i=0; i<sizeof(arr); i++){ char ch = arr[i]; if (isascii(ch)) printf("Ascii character %c\n", ch); else printf("Not ascii character %c\n", ch); } Which prints the output like: length : 9 Ascii character x Not ascii character Not ascii character ? Not ascii character ? Ascii character a Ascii character b Ascii character Ascii character c Ascii character To naked eye length of xvab c seems to be 6, but in code it is coming as 9 ? Correct answer for the xvab c is 1 ...i.e it has only 1 non-ascii character , but in above output it is coming as 3 (times Not ascii character). How can i find the non-ascii character from UTF-8 string, correctly. Please guide on the subject.

  • Fuzzy match in sharepoint search engine?

    In sharepoint 2007 sites, we can search for people or other contents. Is the search engine able to do fuzzy match so that "Micheal" can be corrected to "Michael"? If it's possible, does it need extra configuration? I am also writing a custom webpart that uses sharepoint search service, a web service that has url like "http://site/_vti_bin/search.asm". Is it possible to use this service to do fuzzy search as well? Thanks.

It works when I manually move to the directory it's stored in, but when I try something like this: java C:\Peter\Michael\Lazarus\Main it says it can't find the main class. Is there any solution to this other than making a .jar file (I know that .jar is the best solution, but at this moment isn't the one I'm looking for)?

  • SubSonic 3 LeftOuterJoin

    I have read in this forum that left outer join syntax is not supported by subsonic in an answer to a question on the topic by "Apocatastasis". I have the same issue in that when I create a query using the .LeftOuterJoin the resulting sql has an inner join rather than a left outer join. Can someone please confirm that LeftOuterJoin is indeed not supported and, if that is the case, why is it included in the active record syntax? Thanks Michael

    In light of Michael Carman's comment, I have decided to rewrite the question. Note that 11 comments appear before this edit, and give credence to Michael's observation that I did not write the question in a way that made it clear what I was asking. Question: What is the standard--or cleanest way--to fake the special status that $a and $b have in regard to strict by simply importing a module? First of all some setup. The following works: #!/bin/perl use strict; print "\$a=$a\n"; print "\$b=$b\n"; If I add one more line: print "\$c=$c\n"; I get an error at compile time, which means that none of my dazzling print code gets to run. If I comment out use strict; it runs fine. Outside of strictures, $a and $b are mainly special in that sort passes the two values to be compared with those names. my @reverse_order = sort { $b <=> $a } @unsorted; Thus the main functional difference about $a and $b--even though Perl "knows their names"--is that you'd better know this when you sort, or use some of the functions in List::Util. It's only when you use strict, that $a and $b become special variables in a whole new way. They are the only variables that strict will pass over without complaining that they are not declared. : Now, I like strict, but it strikes me that if TIMTOWTDI (There is more than one way to do it) is Rule #1 in Perl, this is not very TIMTOWDI. It says that $a and $b are special and that's it. If you want to use variables you don't have to declare $a and $b are your guys. If you want to have three variables by adding $c, suddenly there's a whole other way to do it. Nevermind that in manipulating hashes $k and $v might make more sense: my %starts_upper_1_to_25 = skim { $k =~ m/^\p{IsUpper}/ && ( 1 <= $v && $v <= 25 ) } %my_hash ;` Now, I use and I like strict. But I just want $k and $v to be visible to skim for the most compact syntax. And I'd like it to be visible simply by use Hash::Helper qw<skim>; I'm not asking this question to know how to black-magic it. My "answer" below, should let you know that I know enough Perl to be dangerous. I'm asking if there is a way to make strict accept other variables, or what is the cleanest solution. The answer could well be no. If that's the case, it simply does not seem very TIMTOWTDI.
