• Compaq Presario V2000 Vista/7 trial virtualization

  I am currently studying for an A-Plus certification to which was recently added troubleshooting Windows 7 to the exam. You also have to be very familiar with Vista as well. I only have XP on my Compaq Presario V2000, but I wanted to set it up ( I believe I have the minimum requirements for both ) so that I could run trial versions of Vista and 7 virtually.Windows 2000 is also on the exam. Is there an easy legal way to do this? I wouldn't mind partitioning my HDD for the four operating systems either. Thnx if you have any ideas, JLS

• Can expire_logs_days be less than 1 day in MySQL?

  So... yesterday I received an "after the fact email" about a campaign that has started for one of the services that I run. Now the DB server is getting hammered, hard, to the tune of about 300mb/min in binary logging for the replicate. As you could imagine, this is chewing up space at a fairly tremendous rate. My normal 7 day expiry of binary logs just isn't cutting it. I've resorted to truncating logs to just the last for 4 hours with(I'm verifying that replication is up to date with mk-heartbeat): PURGE MASTER LOGS BEFORE DATE_SUB( NOW(), INTERVAL 4 HOUR); I'm just running that from cron every few hours to weather the storm, but it made me question the minimum value for expire_logs_days. I haven't come across a value that is less than 1, but that doesn't mean that it isn't possible. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/server-system-variables.html#sysvar_expire_logs_days gives the type as being numeric, but doesn't indicate if it's expecting integers.

My computer satisfied all the minimum system requirements it required. After installing the Card in PCI Express Slot I started the computer. But it now hangs at the POST screen i.e.(the first screen when the PC loads). It hangs at Checking NVRAM. I had checked the graphic card on other PC and its works perfectly. So I think there's no problem in the Graphic card. If I remove my graphic card and run my PC with built in Graphic card, my PC works and doesn't hang. So, what can be the problem?   How are cached Active Directory domain credentials stored on a Windows client? Are they stored in the local SAM database, thus making them susceptible to the same rainbow table attacks that local user accounts are susceptible to, or are they stored differently? Note, that I do realize that they are salted and hashed, so as not to be stored in plain-text, but are they hashed in the same way as local accounts and are they stored in the same location? I realize that at a minimum they're be susceptible to a brute force attack, but that's a much better situation than being vulnerable to rainbow tables in the event of a stolen machine.

  OS: Fedora 14 GUI: GNOME I need to run an application with another user then the "default" (normally used). Purpose: create a ".desktop" file on my desktop to run e.g.: Google Chrome with another user (NOT ROOT! - so beesu doesn't count.) There aren't any gksu, or kdesu packages in Fedora 14. Why? So i want to create a user with "adduser SOMEONE", and i want to run e.g.: Google Chrome with "SOMEONE" - then it will have minimum permissions, "more security". Thank you!

Since file systems are usually based on physical disks they have the tendency to use the whole area available1 in order to increase the speed2 or reliability3. I'm searching a filesystem that does the exact opposite : try to touch the minimum blocks need by an aggressive block reuse. I would happily trade some performance for space usage.   We need a new install of windows server and sql server to replicate a couple of databases to a geographically separate location from an existing application (over a site-to-site VPN). The source database is SQL Server 2005. However, this is a temporary solution since the client is aiming to implement a different system entirely, so we are looking to find the minimum specification of both windows server and sql server to do this. We are finding the SQL server features per edition and licensing a little difficult to understand, hence the question. Am I correct in thinking that we can replicate data using transactional replication from SQL Server 2005 to 2008 web edition and we can install sql server web edition on windows 2008 web edition also?   I installed Microsoft Word 2010 using the handy web installation feature. The way this works is that Word installs a bare minimum of functionality and any time it needs a feature that has not been downloaded yet, it will download it in-place just as needed. The thing is, this is stalling Word every few minutes. Every few minutes, Word takes a small nap while it tries to find some obscure feature somewhere. This is really annoying. Is there a way to just tell the thing to completely download itself? This was a nice functionality for the trial but it is extremely annoying in actual use.

  I have some disks that were being used on a Solaris system. The disks are formatted as UFS. I attached them to a Debian system (with FreeBSD kernel.   I have Desktop with configuration Pentium 4,945 intel chipset board,dual booting with win 7 and ubuntu 10.10 (no graphics card) Recently i purchased Dell IN2020M 20" with native resolution of 1600x900 but my display allow maximum of 1024x768 because of this when i play any video in full screen mode it doesn't play smoothly or frames are refreshed jerkily I have tried updating my VGA driver but its doesn't helping me much. • Everytime I ping my server, it is pinging localhost instead?

  I recently setup a new server for use with SQL. When I tried to connect via SSMS remotely, it failed. When I pinged it, it is pinging localhost, what is going on here? • How to set up VLAN network

  I'm changing my network from having every device on flat network to using VLans. My problem is that we already have a lot of devices on this network(192.168.20.0/24). From theory, I read that each Vlan has to be a different subnet and then I need to configure virtual interfaces on my Cisco router to cater for inter vlan routing. 1) How can I segment this network with minimum down time on the devices already on the network? 2) Can I just create Vlans and leave all these Vlans in the same layer 3 network so that they can go out of the network (I am not too concerned about inter-Vlan routing) or I have to create subnets which means reconfiguring the existing devices (something I do not want).

• Redirect audio from laptop to desktop over LAN

  I want to be able to play a song on my laptop and have it sound through my desktop's (infinitely better) speakers. If you're familiar with Input Director: I want something that is to audio what Input Director is to mouse/keyboard. I want something that automatically redirects all audio from the laptop to the desktop in real time, and I want that solution to require, like Input Director, minimum maintenance. Beyond the initial setup, I don't want to have to babysit the program that does this. I want something that launches automatically with Windows and just works, and also allows me to cancel it whenever I want. And also doesn't go crazy when the laptop is turned on in a different network where the desktop computer isn't available. Any suggestions for such a program? (I use Windows XP on both computers.)

  I have followed Cloning an SD card onto a larger SD card to clone a 2G SD card to a 32G SD card, and the file system is ext4. However, on the 32G SD card I only can see 2G space available. Is there a way to maximize it out? • Can't decide on a new distro

  I've had Ubuntu (9.10) on my netbook in the past and I really liked it. I'm currently running Fedora and feeling like I should "change it up" again. I've played around with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid a little, and so far I'm very impressed. I've always wanted to try Arch, but I'm worried I won't have the driver support I need for all the non-standard hardware in a netbook. Does anybody have a suggestion for a new distro to try? I'm preferably looking for something feature-rich over light-weight, and something that I can have up and running with a minimum of configuration (at least partially working). Thanks!

  I have a large set of GS108TV2 units--my goal is to set up a network which is comprised of several loops for redundancy/fault tolerance. I have a minimal 3 switch loop configured, with RSTP enabled on two ports on each switch. I have my bridge max age set to 6, and my bridge forward delay set to 4, which are the minimum values allowed. Hello time is fixed at 2 seconds. The switches respond to a cable being removed from a socket, but it takes too long. I cannot get the switch to respond to a loss of connection on one of the redundant ports in less than 20 seconds. Is there any way to configure these switches to respond faster than 20 seconds? That is unacceptable for my application. thanks in advance for any help

  I have to use the On-Screen Keyboard of Windows 7 for typing: (In case you haven't used it yet, you can get it via: All Programs - Accessories - Ease of Access - On-Screen Keyboard or simply search for "osk.exe") It offers a feature to "hover" about the buttons. Microsoft describes it as the following: In hovering mode, you use a mouse or joystick to point to a key for a predefined period of time, and the selected character is typed automatically. There is my specific problem. The predefined period of time is too long to be useful for me. The minimum amount of time is 0.5 seconds (max. 3 seconds). Is there any way to alter this value to something < 0.5? For example via editing the registry? Edit: The entry *'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Osk\HoverPeriod'* cannot be set lower than 500 ms. Any helpful tip would be great!

• Run 2008 R2 Service under 2000 Domain Account

  I'm trying to get a service to run under a domain account. When I try to add the account, I get the error The account name is invalid or does not exist, or the password is invalid for the account name specified I know the account exists and the password is correct. I am also having trouble adding it manually to the "Log on as a service" setting, I get the error An extended error has occured. Failed to save Local Policy Database After a day of research I'm starting to suspect it has to do with it being a 2008 R2 server trying to use a 2000 domain account. I've tried to change the LAN Manager authentication level and the Minimum session security looks okay per my Google digging. I'm not sure what else I can do?

• Windows 7 Keyboard Repeat Rate and Delay are Reset on Resume from Standby / Sleep

  I always keep my keyboard repeat rate at the maximum and the delay at the minimum for optimal keyboard responsiveness. Under Windows 7 however, I have found that the rate and delay are reset to the defaults (ie the one’s that are set with a fresh Windows installation) whenever the system resumes from sleep and requires opening the keyboard control panel applet (which already shows the desired settings) and manually setting them again by pressing Enter. I have seen a couple of posts in the Microsoft support forums, but no solutions. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

  I'm trying to use Monit to check the permissions of a particular directory, but I only care that it's readable to all users. I don't care about any other permissions (write, execute) for the owner, group, or all. I also don't care about any special permissions. Knowing that I can't change the permissions of this directory, and with the possibility of another administrator changing these permissions without affecting my processes that rely on this directory (i.e., granting or revoking write access to the group), is it possible to check for a minimum permission in Monit? I have this which is currently working: check directory archive path /var/home/archive/ if failed perm 0755 then alert But I would like to have something like tihs: check directory archive path /var/home/archive/ if failed perm > 444 then alert This is failing for me. Is it possible to use comparison operators in Monit's permissions checking? If not, are there any workarounds?

  Hi I am setting up a master image to clone to all same machine type Windows 7 client, I login as administrastor and installed all the programs and changed the desktop settings etc, but my local administrator profile is 244megs in size, which will become the default profile of the local machine when sysprep, we have a 2003 server that I want to use mandatory profile for all login users which means I need to copy this profile to the server so when any users login to the domain they are using this profile, loading a 244megs profile is going to be very slow since it will be removed from the client when they logoff. So next time they login it will take a long time again. Is there anything I can do, can I just copy just the bare minimum files from the default profile to the server, as I am not sure what parts I need, I read that I must copy my documents, my documents/pictures so the folder redirection will work. What else do I need to copy to the server? I have firefox xmark sync also and MS words etc. THanks

  Hiya, Does anyone have a table of the default levels of encryption which the various browsers out there support? For instance I know that IE5 and lower struggle even to cope with 40 bit encryption but the latest browsers easily do 256 and beyond. The reason I ask is that I'm looking to get a wildcard certificate for my domain and the price difference is huge between a server gated certificate (where it enforces a minimum of 128bit) and a non-gated certificate (where the browser sets the encryption level). Obviously I like the idea of paying £300 less for the non-gated certificate, but only if I can be sure that the majority of my users (FF3 / Opera / Chrome / IE7+) are going to get good encryption.

• Limiting memory usage and mimimizing swap thrashing on Unix / Linux

  I have a few machines that I machine that I use for running large numbers of jobs where I try to limit the number of jobs so as not to exceed the available RAM of the machine. Occasionally I mis-estimate how much memory some of the jobs will take, and the machine starts thrashing the swap file. I resolve this by sending the kill -s STOP to one of the jobs so that it can get swapped out. Does anyone know of a utility that will monitor a server for processes by a specific name, and then pause the one with the smallest memory footprint is the total memory consumption reaches a desired threshold so that the larger ones can run and complete with a minimum of swap file thrashing? Paused processes then need to be resumed once some existing processes have completed.
