• Failing Sata HDD

  I think my HDD is fried... Could someone confirm or help me restore it? I was using Hardware RAID 1 Configuration [2 x 160GB SATA HDD] on a CentOS 4 Installation. All of a sudden I started seeing bad sectors on the second HDD which stopped being mirrored. I have removed the RAID array and have tested with SMART which showed the following error: 187 Unknown_Attribute 0x003a 001 001 051 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 4645 I have no clue what this means, or if I can recover from it. Could someone give me some ideas on how to fix this, or what HDD to get to replace this?   Microsoft is shoving IE11 and Skydrive in my face with windows 8.1. You can disable skydrive by going into the registry and disable IE by going into Turn windows features on or off but the thing that microsoft just can't understand is that I don't want skydrive or IE. I want to remove IE and skydrive from my computer. Google told me that I can go to Control Panel - Programs and Features - Installed Updates and uninstall IE from there. However, there isn't an option to do so: What do I do?

• Active Directory: Viewing "Attribute Editor" after finding an account via ADUC's "Find" option

  When I activate the Advanced features (View - Advanced Features) and open a user's properties by navigating to their OU and right clicking the user object, I see the Attribute Editor tab. However, if I search for a user (right click the domain - Find - search for the user), and double click on the user, I do not see the tab. I cannot normally navigate to users because some OUs have too many users. Can someone suggest an alternative that allows me to view the Attribute Editor tab?

  We have software that have some features that are so sensitive that we want to verify the identity of the user. Instead of using a own user/password scheme we would really like to either test the password against the user password in XP, or even make Windows self reauthenticate the user so we can make sure that it is an authorized person that accesses the function. Or software is only running on windows XP embedded. I do not know if this is possible at all, does windows have any such features?

  Hello, Say I have 50 million features, each feature comes from disk. At the beggining of my program, I handle each feature and depending on some conditions, I apply some modifications to some. A this point in my program, I am reading a feature from disk, processing it, and writing it back, because well I don't have enough ram to open all 50 million features at once. Now say I want to sort these 50 million features, is there any optimal algorithm to do this as I can't load everyone at the same time? Like a partial sorting algorithm or something like that?

• Languages and development methodologies

  Having never worked with Ruby on Rails, I looked it up on Wikipedia. It says It is intended to be used with an Agile development methodology that is used by web developers for rapid development. This got me asking how a given language/framework can be more appropriate for given development methodologies. Are there certain languages that are more friendly for pair programming, for instance? Are there language features that make certain methodologies are more appropriate? Are there features that make certain methodologies impossible? My initial reaction is to dismiss the connection (the design process is a business process, which is more dependent on business needs that language features). But I'm an only programmer within the firm, and I'm a partner, so I get to decide the business needs. What do you think? Also, if the SO community finds that certain languages point towards certain methodologies, what methodology is most common for c#, which is what I use most of the time?

• Open source alternative to WebEx WebOffice?

  I have a client who has been using WebOffice (from WebEx) for a variety of tasks within their small organization. The problem is that they only really need a small subset of the features WebOffice provides (Contact list, Database, and Document Storage). They've asked me to develop a website focused on these three features with the rationalization that this should be more cost-effective, since they currently aren't using many of the features of WebOffice they pay for. What are some open-source alternatives that I could implement for them? Sharepoint sounds like it would be too bloated and Google Apps may not be as collaborative as they would like.

• In what areas might the use of F# be more appropriate than C#?

  Over the last few years F# has evolved into one of Microsoft's fully supported languages employing many ideas incubated in OCaml, ML and Haskell. Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#. Some of the features i'm looking to implement are: Single or multiple selection of objects Alignment of objects (when several are selected) Same-sizing of objects (when several are selected) Moving/dragging of selected object(s) Selected object resizing in eight directions (using object grips) For features and look-and-feel I've analyzed and used a mixture of ideas from: MS Visual Studio 200x (most useful so far) Visio Crystal Reports My question is: Have I overlooked some other IDEs that provide these kinds of features that are better and user-friendlier examples of what to do than others i've looked at? (They don't have to be Microsoft products. That's just what i have ready access to.)

• Any good books out there for advanced concepts like lambdas, delegates, events etc?

  I've read about these features but I don't think I've seen enough to consistently apply them in my coding, eg "This would be better done with a delegate than with my other, outdated approach". I know what they do, but I want more examples of use cases, or want some heuristic to help me think in terms of such features. All the books I've seen either focus only on the basics or just mention the features as part of the language. Is there any book out there that deals with this? Preferably C# or language agnostic.

• How to assume/steal another process's windows as my own?

  I'd like to show another app's windows under my app's taskbar button. It's a background app that reports another process's windows as my app's own. Is there any universal way to do this, e.g. each "new" window, alert glow, progressmeter, and other taskbar features, show under my own app's button? For example, Winfox runs under its own process and steals Firefox's windows. It also adds features, but that's irrelevant -- I just want to support another app's existing taskbar features under my own app's button -- multiple windows, progressmeter, alert flashing, error flashing, mini-icons, etc. Is there a near-universal way to steal an app, or is it largely app-specific? Thanks!
