• Remote login/access on windows

  Hi I was wondering what software I can use to access my and other machines remotely? I used ssh which is nice but i don't know how it would be like on windows. (I assume its the same idea but windows console instead of a bash terminal?) Windows has a lot of applications that require GUI/MouseClicks. Actually I don't know a single ssh or vpn command line installer not that i'm complaining (but is helpful if you can mention some). I haven't use a VPN, is this taking control of a users screen/session? Or is it another instance/session as if you logged in as a different user on that box? What solutions are at my disposal for windows? (7)

• Is there an easy way to read blu-rays on Windows?

  Some time ago, I bought my parents a computer dedicated to medias (mostly photographs and movies trough DLNA). My father asked me if he could read blu-ray on it, so I bought a blu-ray reader but I can't find a software to do the playback. I installed PowerDVD (a free version we got with a Blu-Ray) but it seems it now requires a (non-free) upgrade. Even if it were free, I hardly see my parent do the upgrade by themselves as they barely understand how computers work. I thought I would find a free software (something like VLC, but for blu-rays) but so far had no luck. Do you guys have a software to suggest that would solve my issues ? It should run on Windows Vista, shouldn't require an update every monday, or at least a free one. Thank you very much.

• Need IPSec help on Windows 2003

  Hey guys, I am trying to configure IPSec between a web and app server in our environment. I want all traffic between these two servers to use IPsec and be encrypted. These servers are on the same domain so i am currently using Kerebos for security, I have also tried pre-defined keys and nothing changed. When I try and ping between the servers I get "Negotiating IP Security" everytime. I have also confirmed that when I change "Require Security" to "Permit" everything works so IPSec is working, I believe its something with my security setup. Under the security tab both servers have the default 3DES keys first and then DES keys. I have also specified tunnel endpoints (the alternate server's IP). What am I missing? Thanks for any help..

• Segfault with rtorrent on Debian Lenny

  Hi, My debian lenny server keeps segfaulting with rtorrent, it happens once every 24 hours. Libcurl has been recompiled to the latest version and it still seems to happen.   On the Home ribbon in Power Point 2007 there is a new slide button with an arrow that shows you various types of slides that you can add to your presentation: Title Slide, Title and Content, Comparison, Title Only, etc. I want to design a new type of slide that has 4 content areas instead of two and then be able to add new slides of this type using the new slide menu. I know that I can add new Power Point templates but that would require me to start a new presentation with my custom slide type in it and the copy and paste that slide into the current presentation that I am already working on. How can I create a new slide type and then add it to the menu so that I can quickly create new slides of my new 4 content area slide type?

• Mountable online storage (no syncing)

  I have a Linux VPS that I would like to turn into a media server. Like most cheap VPS's, it has a fairly small storage capacity. What I would like to do is attach the box to an online backup system such as SpiderOak or DropBox, where the files would reside and be directly accessible to either a webserver or media server software. Since the VPS hdd is small, I do not want the files to be synced to it. I would like a storage system that is online only. Ideally mountable like a network drive. Are there any services that suit my needs, or workarounds for services such as SpiderOak that do not require syncing?

  We're already configuring Internet Explorer proxy settings through group policy and it works great. Sadly, I've recently run into multiple issues where those settings are ignored by certain services. I realized that these service have one thing in common. They use WinHTTP, which has its own proxy settings. Now I'm asking myself how to apply those across the whole domain. I realize that I could create a logon script and simply run netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie, but, from experience I know that these settings require a reboot to take effect. So this wouldn't help me at all in a logon script. So, how can I do it?

• Can KVM CPU assignment count differ from physical hosts CPU count?

  I have read this question. I knew already that I could for example, have a quad core machine with four guests each having two vCPUs. As they don't all be require 100% CPU usage all the time, the scheduler would handle this for me. My question is about how this relates to a fail-over or migration situation; If host1 has two dual-core CPUs, and I assign guest1 four vCPUs (so it accessed all four physical cores), what will happen if I try and migrate it to host2 which only has one dual-core CPU? Can qemu-kvm emulate more vCPUs than there are physical? Or would I have to shut down the virtual machine, change the CPU assignment, migrate it, and then boot it back up (so no live migration)? I didn't change anything. This is the first time I checked the log file and this warning is in there from the start. Can I do something about it? Or I shouldn't be concerned, because it can do everything what's necessary anyway? Do you have this warning in your logfile?

I currently live Buenos Aires where color correction hardware costs premium prices. I do some graphic design, but don't require a pro-level calibration. That said, I'd like my monitors to be set as close to "true color" as possible. I've located the useful and free Monitor Calibration Wizard, but it seems to adjust the entire system internally at startup. I could use the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet to set a different ICC or ICM profile for each monitor, but the Monitor Calibration Wizard outputs its own format for profiles.

• How do I host multiple SSL websites on a single EC2 instance using Amazon Elastic Load Balancers?

  If I have 3 separate websites which all require SSL (separate certificates) that I want to host on the same EC2 instance(s) across multiple availability zones so that we have the ability to scale and be highly available, how do I achieve this using ELBs in my Amazon VPC? Each site requires a separate IP address, so I have added multiple private IPs to the EC2 instance, but I am unsure how to bind the ELB to a certain IP on the instance. I was also able to setup multiple ELB pointing to the same instance, but again, I am not seeing any way to bind each ELB to a separate IP on the instance. If this is not possible, what is the best option? Run each site on a separate EC2 instance / ELB combo (expensive and harder to maintain) Give each site a separate public IP and use Route 53 to do the load balancing (seems like a hack) Use a different load balancer option such as HAProxy that should be able to work like a normal load balancer appliance. Please help!

Unfortunately, at places over a week of data points can be missing. Gnuplot draws long lines over these intervals. How can I make gnuplot only connect points on consecutive days? Solutions that require preprocessing of the data are fine, as I already smooth it with a script. • Direct DB to Web Server connection

  I have a database server sitting right underneath a virtual machine host server in the rack, and this vm host is primarily responsible for servers hosting a couple different web sites and app servers that all talk to databases on the other server. Right now both servers are connected to the same switch, and I'm pretty happy with the pathing. However, both servers also have an unused network port. I wondering about the potential benefits of using a short crossover or normal+auto mdix network cable to connect these two servers together directly. Is this a good idea, or would I be doing something that won't show much benefit and is just likely to trip up a future admin who's not looking for this? The biggest weakness I can see right now is that this would likely require a code change for each vm app to point to the new IP of the database server on this private little network, and if I have a problem with the virtual machine host and have to spin up it's guests elsewhere while I fix it I'll have to change this back before things will work.

• Going from dev to sysadmin advice [on hold]

  I've seen the threads on here about transitions to/from sysadmin. My story is I am a dev (technology is irrelevant), but in learning that technology it required a lot of server infrastructure. In the last few years, I thus had to setup a lot of infrastructure (AD, DNS, SQL etc) to learn said technology. I've noticed that I've enjoyed doing sysadmin and got quite good at it, and find it even engrossing (e.g. I am amazed by how decievingly complicated AD is, under the hood). I'm now thinking of moving into IT infrastructure after about 4 years in various dev (.NET) roles. Any advice? My concern is that I don't have any experience with hardware load balancers and firewalls like F5 etc, which some jobs require. How could I compensate for that? Also, I'm rubbish with my hands, would this be a factor? (i.e. maintaining physical kit)? Thanks

  tl;dr version, Does a software path exist to convert from openscad input to render on a website via webgl? What I'm trying to do is display OpenSCAD created designs uploaded via post on a LEMPy driven website; this is currently done by outputting to a static png image. I would like to render one of openscad's export formats(wikibooks) and convert for display in javascript/webgl through some software path available via linux batch. CPU and RAM are relatively unconstrained but no GPU available. I've looked into CopperLeicht, but it requires CopperCube output which would require windows or wine. FOSS is preferred but not required. edit: I found three.js has converters for fbx, dae, obj, and 3ds formats which might be helpful as one of the last steps.

• Restoring from .wim image without access to Windows DVD

  I'm attempting to fix a friend's computer. It will not boot to anything Windows-related (see my earlier question for more information). I was able to boot into Peppermint OS to back up her files and grab the HP OEM image (.wim) so that I can restore from it (OEM W7 key, so I can't just do a W7 reinstall). However, I cannot figure out what the heck I need to do to be able to actually restore her computer to that image. I tried using these instructions on TechNet to create a WinPE flash drive, but those instructions don't actually make the flash drive bootable, so that option didn't work (the partition is labeled as active, but when trying to boot from it I get the message "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart."). All of the other instructions that I found require that I get into WinRE or boot from an install disk, which I cannot do. Any suggestions as to how I can apply this .wim boot image?

  I am running on Windows 8 and installed Lubuntu 13.04 in VirtualBox. I cannot login to DD-WRT in Virtualbox. I can login to DD-WRT on Windows 8. I have used the same credentials and tried many times, but to no avail. How can I login successfully to DD-WRT in VirtualBox? I have even tried searching on the Internet but I could not find any relevant solutions.   Just wondering, why LCD/LED-backlit TVs cost more (almost double) than LCD/LED-backlit monitors for same screen size. Because I guess that TVs and Monitors, both use almost same technologies and both nowadays support some common connectors (HDMI/D-Sub/DVI etc). And since a Monitor has much higher resolution than a TV for that size, and they are used more closely than TVs, Monitors probably require more engineering effort. So, Monitors are supposed to be costlier than TVs, right? Ex: A ViewSonic (or any) 22"/26" monitor supports Full-HD resolution at 1080p (WSXGA+-1680×1050, WUXGA-1920×1200), while all 22"/26" HDTVs support HD-ready 720p (WXGA-1366x768) only, which is also the resolution of my Notebook's 15.6" screen.

  I've created a kickstart script to install CentOS 5.5 (32bit) in a fully automated way. The DNS/DHCP setup correctly gives the system the right hostname in both the forward and reverse lookups. dig node4.mydomain.com. +short 10.10.10.64 dig -x 10.10.10.64 +short node4.mydomain.com. In the state the installed system is right after the installation completed is as follows: cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes GATEWAY=10.10.10.1 HOSTNAME=node4.mydomain.com echo ${HOSTNAME} node4.mydomain.com cat /etc/hosts # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6 10.10.10.64 node4 My problem is that this automatically generated hosts file is slightly different from the way I want it (or better: the way Hadoop wants it).   I need to allow an include path for a vhost subdomain on Plesk 10. I've edited the PHP PEAR path into /etc/php.ini as I'm happy for it to be globally available: include_path = ".:/usr/share/pear/" This works insofar as PHP is able to see the files in that directory when a script tries to include them, but I'm getting the dreaded openbasedir error: Warning: require_once() [function.require-once]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/usr/share/pear/xxxx.php) is not within the allowed path(s): (/var/www/vhosts/xxxx.com/subdomains/test/httpdocs/:/tmp/) Am I right in saying that the subdomain or main domain can have a vhost.conf file in which I can alter the openbasedir allowed paths? I've tried searching out solutions but I'm afraid I can't quite see one yet :)
