• Transferring to a SSD using Windows Explorer?

  I've just bought a new SSD (regretting this already) which I want to make my primary hard drive on my new computer. It's a fresh Windows 8 install, so I'm wondering if I can just copy the entire contents of C: onto my new SSD drive, or will I need to copy other things too such as boot records? I don't have a CD drive unfortunately (I removed it to put in the SSD - it's a very small HTPC) and I don't have any USB stick to make a bootable copy of Clonezilla or similar. UPDATE: I have decided to re-install Windows 8 from scratch onto the SSD, the problem is obtaining the serial key that is embedded into the BIOS. I actually have a spare, unused product key from my desktop I'm writing on now, but I'd rather not use that when I already have a valid key in my new HTPC :( Thanks :)

• Cisco: changing VTP mode server/client to transparent

  I have around 40 L2 switches (2960, 3560, 3500, 3750) running in VTP client mode and one L3 switch (6500) running in VTP server mode, all connected together. I would like to switch everything in VTP transparent mode without any interruption of service. I've already test on a poc version with 3 switches (Catalyst 2950, 3560 and 3750). Using serial and SSH connection, it is seems working but i'm not sure it is enough representative compare to the real network. Knowing that the VTP Pruning is enabled, I am wondering what would be the best procedure to proceed the changement. I've read that we could lost connection by keeping it enabled. Should I change the server or clients first? Is it important to change the VTP domain and VTP Pruning parameters?

  My tradition is to set all zone serials to the timestamp at modification. Now that Puppet is my new religion, I want to set serial timestamps when building zone files from exported resources. A somewhat trivialized example may look like this: file { "/tmp/dafile": content = inline_template("<%= Time.now.to_i %>"), } The problem with this approach is that content will be different all the time, which will (ultimately) provoke rebuilding of zone files on each puppet config poll. Is there some way I can insert a timestamp without it being included in the data that is compared against previous state?

• Tips for locating my stolen computer

  I'm in a bit of a panic, my new Powerbook laptop was stolen. I had no mobile me, or security software installed on the computer. I have the mac address of the computer as well as the serial number. Is there a hacky way to do this? I was even thinking perhaps of trying to use bluetooth, I know I had it set to discoverable. and I know the "name" of the computer, perhaps there is app that can scan the names of bluetooh computers in the vicinity? If there some third party you can get to scan the internet for your mac address? Any glimmer of hope would really help

  The Mac Pro has a specific hard drive for sale in the Apple Store for $549.00. The drive has the following specs: Serial ATA 3GB per second 7200 RPM Amazon has a hard drive with the same specs for $169.99. The only difference I can tell is that the Apple hard drive label says it has "Apple HDD Firmware". What exactly is the benefit of this firmware and is there something I am missing that make up for the price difference in these two drives? Update: My initial comparison between the two drive was unfair. Apparently 2TB drives that are 3 GB/S and 7200 RPM are quiet a bit more than $169.99. Dell has a 2 TB SATA Caviar Black from Western Digital that is $319.99, which is closer to Apple's price.

• APC UPS-5000 Power off remote servers

  Hi there, I have a UPS connected via the serial port to a server using PowerChute Business Edition. If a power outage occurs I would like this server to start shutting down all other servers within the network. Is there dedicated software to do this? I was thinking of creating a command file which runs a .bat file to run shut down commands to each server (using PSExec). I can set PowerChute to run this command file when a power failure occurs. Is there not anything APC provide which has this functionality and is more efficient than writing a .bat file to do this? Thanks,

• Cloning Fresh Windows 7 with external HDD, DVD or CDs?

  I want to create Windows installation disk (not necessarily CD) from my Windows 7 Pro laptop, not sure what it actually means here. The material is about 50-60GB, requiring about 12 pcs of 5GB disk (not going to happen, too much work to use them later). I have the Windows serial on the laptop bottom and this is so-called firm -laptop (no idea what it actually mean, better warranty and some instant support thing apparently). Now how to do the clone with external material such as DVDs? how can I create mock-windows-installation medium or some real windows-installation medium? I am now not sure whether Windows offers W7 -installations medium online, well my W -peer mentioned some MSDAA -something. • Using a certificate in Thunderbird

  I have my certifcate issued by "TC Trustcenter" in a CER file. Thunderbird 3.0 needs it as a PFX files. So I installed the CER certificate with the Internet options in the Control Panel. Thereafter I exported the certificate including the "private key" and "all certificates in the certification path" to a PFX file. After importing this certificate with Thunderbird I still cannot decrypt the mail sent to the mail address of the certificate. What else must I do to use the private key? The certificate is valid since I decrypted the mail already on another computer using Outlook. I verified the certificate serial number to ensure that I use the same certificate.

I currently have screens, kb, mouse etc... in both locations, so I just pick up my tower case when I want to move to the other location. However to make moving easier I was thinking of buying 2 tower cases with hot swappable drive bays on the front and installing identical hardware in each one. This would allow me to pull the drives out and just take them with me and plug them into the PC at the other location. Would windows 7 complain? I'm not fussed about buying licenses for both PCs, but would I have any problems with drivers due to the different serial numbers of the components?

  Hey all - I'm in the market for a new laptop and wanted to get some recommendations. I'm a Linux sysadmin and this laptop is primarily for work related use, working from home, after hours, occasional trips to the data center, etc. We all know the drill. My typical setup includes various utilities and tools plus multiple partitions for booting different OS's including VMware. Need serial port of course, DVD-RW, and all the usual stuff we use in our daily routine. I'm kinda thinking a Thinkpad T510 but open to other suggestions! Brief explanation of why you suggest some particular brand and configuration is appreciated.

• Linux (lsusb) not showing String Descriptors of a USB device

  I have an embedded device that when plugged to a linux host, shows up with vid and pid that are not in the usb.ids file (proprietary IDs). However I provide String Descriptors that do show up when plugged into a Windows Host. But not on a Linux Host. lsusb -v shows only iManufacturer 3 iProduct 2 iSerial 1 But on the device side, when processing the setup requests, I see that the Strings are actually requested by the Host. By Windows and also the Linux Host. The USB Device Tree Viewwer under Windows shows this output: iManufacturer : 0x01 Language 0x0409 : "My Manufacturer" iProduct : 0x02 Language 0x0409 : "MyProduct" iSerialNumber : 0x03 Language 0x0409 : "My Serial" I feel that lsusb does not show all of the information. Is there a more informative tool?

  Hi, I have problem with configuring bind9 on debian (lenny) server. Generaly speaking everything is working ok but sometimes I get 404 on few domains (eg. 4stopnie.com but after few refreshes in browser site loads) or I can't validate site with validator.w3.org (error '500 Can't connect to 4stopnie.com:80 (Bad hostname '4stopnie.com')'). Users go to the page, the widget read the cookies variable to display contact info (locale2contact)and preselect the drop-down menu (function build_dropdown) If users select the drop down menu, the displya contact info change (function changeContactInfo), and then I need to rebuild the drop down menu with user previously selection (function build_dropdown2). I am looking for best practices for adding this functionality to RightNow widget. Thank you. I really do not like the way i am doing now. It works; but the code looks bad.

• WinInet Apps failing when Internet Explorer is set to Offline Mode

  Ran into a nasty issue last week when all of a sudden many of my old applications that are using WinInet for HTTP access started failing. Specifically, the WinInet HttpSendRequest() call started failing with an error of 2, which when retrieving the error boils down to: WinInet Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified Now this error can pop up in many legitimate scenarios with WinInet such as when no Internet connection is available or the HTTP configuration (usually configured in Internet Explorer’s options) is misconfigured. The error typically means that the server in question cannot be found or more specifically an Internet connection can’t be established. In this case the problem started suddenly and was causing some of my own applications (old Visual FoxPro apps using my own wwHttp library) and all Adobe Air applications (which apparently uses WinInet for its basic HTTP stack) along with a few more oddball applications to fail instantly when trying to connect via HTTP. Most other applications – all of my installed browsers, email clients, various social network updaters all worked just fine. It seems it was only WinInet apps that were failing. Yet oddly Internet Explorer appeared to be working. So the problem seemed to be isolated to those ‘classic’ applications using WinInet. WinInet’s base configuration uses the Internet Explorer options dialog. To check this out I typically go to the Internet Explorer options and find the Connection tab, and check out the LAN Setup. Make sure there are no rogue proxy settings or configuration scripts that are invalid. Trying with Auto-configuration on and off also can often fix ‘real’ configuration errors. This time however this wasn’t a problem – nothing in the LAN configuration was set (all default). I also played with the Automatic detection of settings which also had no effect. I also tried to use Fiddler to see if that would tell me something. Fiddler has a few additional WinInet configuration options in its configuration. Running Fiddler and hitting an HTTP request using WinInet would never actually hit Fiddler – the failure would occur before WinInet ever fired up the HTTP connection to go through the Fiddler HTTP proxy. And the Culprit is: Internet Explorer’s Work Offline Option The culprit in this situation was Internet Explorer which at some point, unknown to me switched into Offline Mode and was then shut down: When this Offline mode is checked when IE is running *or* if IE gets shut down with this flag set, all applications using WinInet by default assume that it’s running in offline mode. Depending on your caching HTTP headers and whether the page was cached previously you may or may not get a response or an error. For an independent non-browser application this will be highly unpredictable and likely result in failures getting online – especially if the application forces requests to always reload by disabling HTTP caching (as I do on most of my dynamic HTTP clients). What makes this especially tricky is that even when IE is in offline mode in the browser, you can still browse around the Web *if* you have a connection. IE will try to load anything it has cached from the local cache, but as soon as you hit a URL that isn’t cached it will automatically try to access that URL and uncheck the Work Offline option. Conversely if you get knocked off the Internet and browse in IE 9, IE will automatically go into offline mode. I never explicitly set offline mode – it just automatically sets itself on and off depending on the connection. Problem is if you’re not using IE all the time (as I do – rarely and just for testing so usually a few commonly used URLs) and you left it in offline mode when you exit, offline mode stays set which results in the above head scratcher. Ack. This isn’t new behavior in IE 9 BTW – this behavior has always been there, but I think what’s different is that IE now automatically switches between online and offline modes without notifying you at all, so it’s hard to tell when you are offline. Fixing the Issue in your Code If you have an application that is using WinInet, there’s a WinInet option called INTERNET_OPTION_IGNORE_OFFLINE. I just checked this out in my own applications and Internet Explorer 9 and it works, but apparently it’s been broken for some older releases (I can’t confirm how far back though) – lots of posts seem to suggest the flag doesn’t work. However, in IE 9 at least it does seem to work if you call InternetSetOption before you call HttpOpenRequest with the Http Session handle. I never want to see offline operation in an HTTP client API – it’s just too unpredictable in handling errors and the last thing you want is getting unpredictably stale data. Problem solved but this behavior is – well ugly.   I had Ubuntu 11.10 and in the last few weeks I experienced an obscure problem: after I had the computer running for a few days I could no longer connect to google.com or anything related to google. All sites worked with all browsers (Firefox, chrome, opera) except google. It remained in the connecting phase for a few minutes and either timed out or finally connected with this huge delay. Even if I entered other sites such as this one, if it had anything to do with google such adsense or gstatic or whatever with g in it, that site took a long time to load waiting in connecting to gstatic.com . Anything google related took minutes to work, but everything else worked instantly! I tried rebooting or using other machine(with windows on it) and this worked, so it's not network related. But after a few days it started not working again... So I upgraded to the Precise Pangolin hoping this behavior would go away. It didn't! After a few days I get the same behavior as in 11.10. What am I supposed to do? Reboot every other day? I didn't have this problem with neither 10.10 or 11.04. I found the Realtek RTL8168/8111E issue with the r8169 driver but this is not exactly the same card so probably trying r8168 won't help. Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. • Wireless will not connect

  Hello, I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the same machine as my windows setup. However, it will not connect to my wireless network. It can see its there, it can attempt to connect, yet it will never connect. It will keep bringing up the password prompt everyso often. I have tried turning my security to WEP, I ended up turning it back to WPA2. It is set to AES (noted a few threads on google about that). Can you assist? Data encrypted using the generation key can only be decrypted using the corresponding validation key. How does cryptographic validation work? When a new license project is created, a unique validation-generation key pair is created for the project. When LogicNP CryptoLicensing For .Net generates licenses, it encrypts the license settings using the generation key. The validation key can be safely distributed with your software and is used during validation. During license validation, LogicNP CryptoLicensing For .Net attempts to decrypt the encrypted license code using the validation key. If the decryption is successful, this means that the data was encrypted using the generation key, since only the corresponding validation key can decrypt data encrypted with the generation key. This further means that not only is the license valid but that it was generated by you and only you since nobody else has access to the generation key. Generation Key This key is used by CryptoLicensing Generator to generate encrypted license codes. This key is stored in the license project file, so the license project file must be kept secure and confidential and must be accorded the same care as any other critical asset such as source code. Validation Key This key is used for validating generated license codes. It is the same key displayed in the 'Get Validation Key And Code' dialog (Ctrl+K) and is used by your software when validating license codes (using LogicNP.CryptoLicensing.dll). Unlike the generation key, it is not necessary to keep this key secure and confidential. Note that the generation key pair is stored in the project file created by LogicNP CryptoLicensing For .Net, so it is very important to backup this file and to keep it secure. Once the file is lost, it is not possible to retrieve the key pair. FAQ Do I use the same validation key to validate all license codes? Yes, the validation key (and generation key) for the project remains the same; you use the same key to validate all license codes generated using the project. You can retrieve the validation key using the "Project" menu --> "Get Validation Key & Code" menu item. Can license codes generated using generation key from one project be validated using validation key of another project? No! Q. Is every generated license code unique? A. Yes, every license code generated by CryptoLicensing is guaranteed to be unique, even if you generate thousands of codes at a time. Q. What makes CryptoLicensing so secure? A. CryptoLicensing uses the latest cryptographic technology to generate and validate licenses. The cryptographic algorithm used is the RSA asymmetric key algorithm which can use upto 3072-bit keys. Given current computing power, it takes years to break a 3072-bit key. Q. Is is possible for a hacker to develop a keygen for my software? A. Impossible. This goes against the very essence of the security of the asymmetric cryptographic scheme because the project file contains both the validation and generation key. With your software, you only need to include the validation key which will be used to validate licenses generated by CryptoLicensing using the generation key. The license project file should be treated as any other valuable and confidential asset such as your source code. Q. Does the license service need the license project file? A. Yes. The license project file is needed whenever new licenses are generated (via the UI, via the API or via the license service). As just one example, the license service generates new machine-locked licenses when activated licenses are presented to it for activation, therefore the license service needs the license project file. Q. Is it possible to embed my own data in the generated licenses? A. Yes. You can embed any amount of additional data in the licenses. This data will have the same amount of security as the license code itself and will be tamper-proof. The embedded user data can be retrieved from your software. Q. What additional steps can I take to ensure that my software does not get cracked? A. There are many methods and techniques which can make it extremely difficult for a hacker to crack your software. See Writing Effective License Checking Code And Designing Effective Licenses for more information. Q. Why is the license service not working? A. The most common cause is not setting the CryptoLicense.LicenseServiceURL property before trying to validate a license. Make sure that this property is set to the correct URL where your license service is hosted. The most common cause after this is that the license project file on the web server where your license service is hosted is not the latest. This happens if you make changes to the license project (for example, set the 'Enable With Serials' setting for a profile), but don't upload the updated project file to your web server. Q. Why are my serials not working? Serial codes require the user of a license service. See Using Serial Codes for more details. Also see the earlier question 'Why is the license service not working?' Q. Is the same validation key used to validate license codes generated from different profiles. A. Yes. Profiles are just pre specified license settings for quickly generating licenses having those settings. The actual license code is still generated using the license project's cryptographic generation key and thus, can be validated using the project's validation key. Q. Why are changes made to a profile not getting saved? A. Simply changing license settings via UI and saving the license project does not save those license settings to the active profile. You must first save the license settings to a profile using the Save/Save As command from the Profiles menu (see above). Q. Why is validation of activated licenses failing from CryptoLicensing Generator, but works from my software? A. Make sure that you have specified the URL of the license service using the Project Properties Dialog. Also see the earlier question 'Why is the license service not working?' Q. How can I extend the trial period of my customer? A. To extend the evaluation period of the customer, simply send him a new license code specifying the desired evaluation limits. Evaluation information such as the current used days, executions, etc are stored in garbled form in a registry location which is derived from the license code. Therefore, when a new license code is used, the old evaluation information will not be used and a new evaluation period will be started.
