• SQL Server 2008 - Error starting service - model.mdf not found?!

  my SQL server 2008 was running fine. About an hour ago, it suddenly stopped - the MSSQLSERVER service had stopped I right clicked, clicked start, and it said the service had started, and stopped I looked in the event log and saw these two errors: 17207 : udopen: Operating system error 3(error not found) during the creation/opening of physical device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf. 17204 : FCB::Open failed: Could not open device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf for virtual device number (VDN) 1. The model.mdf db has NEVER been in that location - i specified drive F: to use for data / log during install. I checked the SQL Configuration Manager, to try and set startup params, but SQL Server is not listed as one of the services..... EDIT: I've now moved the db to where it was looking for: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\ directory. Now if I start the service, it still does not work - i get this error message in the log: Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 3, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes. Interestingly, i checked the error log - around the time users reported problems, there is this: 2010-01-08 17:11:26.44 spid51 Configuration option 'show advanced options' changed from 0 to 1. • MS Licensing - 3 windows machines, 30 users, how many CALs required?

  I'm in the middle of upgrading, and purchasing licensing for 3 of our Servers. One will be a Windows Server 2008 machine, running SQL Server 2008. The other two machines will be domain controllers, both running Windows 2003. Our organisation has 30 Users. I understand (through our reseller) that a Windows 2008 licence gives "downgrade" rights to use 2003. Realistically, for the above setup of 3 machines, will I just need one set of 30 CALs for 2008?

• Trying to get DNS services running on Windows Server 2008 R2, what am I getting wrong ?

  Ok, So I am basically trying to get a home server pc up that will provide Domain name services, act as Mail server and web server. I have one static IP, well it's not officially static but hasn't changed in two years so I'll call it static. I have done the following: Configured router NAT/virtual port forward UDP/TCP port 53 to the internal IP of my server 192.168.1.16, in adapter settings specified the manual settings: 192.168.1.16 IP, gateway 192.168.1.1, Subnet: 255.255.255.0 and loopback DNS: 127.0.0.1 Using my public my public IP Checked using http://www.canyouseeme.org/ that port 53 is open and is not being blocked by my ISP. It can see services on this port. Registered Domain name (mydomain.com.au) Updated whois database through the domain registrars site and registered NameServer names: ns0.mydomain.com.au and ns2.mydomain.com.au, both have been associated with my single public IP. (Waited 24 hours) Update the nameserver for mydomain.com.au: primary ns0.mydomain.com.au secondary: ns2.mydomain.com.au (waited 24+ hours) Installed Server 2008 R2, install web server role and DNS role. Webserver works when I enter my public IP into browser of any PC/mobile, get IIS7 welcome page. In DNS server: Created new forward lookup zone: ; ; Database file mydoman.com.au.dns for mydomain.com.au zone. ; Zone version: 10 ; @ IN SOA mydomain.com.au. mydomain.testdomain.com. ( 10 ; serial number 900 ; refresh 600 ; retry 86400 ; expire 3600 ) ; default TTL ; ; Zone NS records ; @ NS ns0.mydomain.com.au. @ NS ns1.mydomain.com.au. ; ; Zone records ; @ A 192.168.1.16 www A 192.168.1.16 The Domain name services will however not work, the whois database updated with ns0.mydomain.com.au etc. but when I type in my site name www.mydomain.com.au from an external machine it will not open site and I can't even ping it (Can't find host) When I check the ns0.mydomain.com.au NS record using a tool Like: http://www.squish.net/dnscheck/ I get: Security: Server ns0.mydomain.com.au (XXX.XXX.XXX.XX <- my public IP) is recursive Domain exists but there is no such record Any ideas, thanks...

• Setting up Virtual Hosts with Apache on Windows 2008 server for multiple sites. Complicated setup, including subversion

  I am setting up apache on my windows 2008 server at my home. It will serve 2 functions. Subversion hosting to allow me and some others to manage company documents with version control Local website hosting for web development. Will need to run several websites since I generally work on more then one site at a time. Heres what I have done so far. I set up subversion and apache 2.2 using some walk troughs. I changed the default port to 1337. (im a nerd) Using dyndns.com I created a domain to forward to my home ip which is dynamic. ( company.gotdns.org) I then went into my DNS for my company.com and added a record to point repo.company.com to company.gotdns.org At this point people who need access to my file repository can access by going to repo.company.com/repo which is good so far. My question comes on the next step, setting up virtual hosts with apache. Ideally I would like to have my local website be viewable by some others in the company from their homes. So, say I am working on site1, I would like to have them be able to view this by going site1.roeland.bythepixel.com. At the same time, I would like to have site10.wouter.bythepixel.com go to his local setup for site10. What I have done for this: I went into my DNS for company.com and added a record to point roeland.company.com to company.gotdns.org (which translates to my ip). I added code to my httpd-vhosts.conf (listed at bottom) I added code to my host file (listed at bottom) Hah, so of course this doenst work as excepted.. going to site1.roeland.bythepixel.com doesnt bring up my test1 site. Could anyone point me where I may be going wrong?   I want to setup a single server to run a few virtual servers for our datacenter. I do not have a lot of money to spend so I am trying to gain bang for the buck. My budget is around $2,000. So I was thinking about building the following as the VMWare physical server: Intel iCore 7 950 (LGA1366, 4 cores,8 threads) Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3 LGA 1366 X58 ATX Intel Motherboard 24 GB of Viper II Series, Sector 7 Edition, Extreme Performance DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) CL9 Triple Channel Memory VelociRaptor 300GB 10,000 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive I am planning on running the newest version of VMWare ESXi (64-bit). On these I am planning on running a few various servers: Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ IIS (several custom built ASP.NET Apps) Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ MS SQL 2008 Database Server Linux Web Server w/ Several WordPress Blogs (XAMPP?) Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ IIS (DEV ENVIRONMENT) Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ MS SQL 2008 Database Server (DEV ENVIRONMENT) In your opinion, will this hardware be sufficient to run the above load with room for possible 2-3 more virtual machines (probably lightweight web servers)?

• Performing an upgrade from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010

  I recently had to go through the process of migrating a TFS 2008 SP1 to a TFS 2010 environment. I will go into the details of the tasks that I went through, but first I want to explain why I define it as a migration and not an upgrade. When this environment was setup, based on support and limitations for TFS 2008, we used a 32 bit platform for the TFS Application Tier and Build Servers.  The Data Tier, since we were installing SP1 for TFS 2008, was done as a 64 bit installation.  We knew at that point that TFS 2010 was in the picture so that served as further motivation to make that a 64bit install of SQL Server.  The SQL Server at that point was a single instance (Default) installation too.  We had a pretty good strategy in place for backups of the databases supporting the environment (and this made the migration so much smoother), so we were pretty familiar with the databases and the purpose they serve. I am sure many of you that have gone through a TFS 2008 installation have encountered challenges and trials.  And likely even more so if you, like me, needed to configure your deployment for SSL.  So, frankly I was a little concerned about the process of migrating.  They say practice makes perfect, and this environment I worked on is in some way my brain child, so I was not ready nor willing for this to be a failure or something that would impact my client’s work. Prior to going through the migration process, we did the install of the environment.  The Data Tier was the same, with a new Named instance in place to host the 2010 install.  The Application Tier was in place too, and we did the DefaultCollection configuration to test and validate all components were in place as they should. Anyway, on to the tasks for the migration (thanks to Martin Hinselwood for his very thorough documentation): Close access to TFS 2008, you want to make sure all code is checked in and ready to go.  We stated a difference of 8 hours between code lock and the start of migration to give time for any unexpected delay.  How do we close access?  Stop IIS. Backup your databases.  Which ones? TfsActivityLogging TfsBuild TfsIntegration TfsVersionControl TfsWorkItemTracking TfsWorkItemTrackingAttachments Restore the databases to the new Named Instance (make sure you keep the same names) Now comes the fun part! The actual import/migration of the databases.  A couple of things happen here. The TfsIntegration database will be scanned, the other databases will be checked to validate they exist.  Those databases will go through a process of data being extracted and transferred to the TfsVersionControl database to then be renamed to Tfs_<Collection>. You will be using a tool called tfsconfig and the option import. This tool is located in the TFS 2010 installation path (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Tools),  the command to use is as follows:    tfsconfig import /sqlinstance:<instance> /collectionName:<name> /confirmed Where <instance> is going to be the SQL Server instance where you restored the databases to.  <name> is the name you will give the collection. And to explain /confirmed, well this means you have done a backup of the databases, why?  well remember you are going to merge the databases you restored when you execute the tfsconfig import command. The process will go through about 200 tasks, once it completes go to Team Foundation Server Administration Console and validate your imported databases and contents. We’ll keep this manageable, so the next post is about how to complete that implementation with the SSL configuration.

  Hi, I'm having an issue I cannot track down and I have looked through the forums and not found anything that sheds any light. I have a fresh install of a Server 2008 R2 Web that I am trying to load an application I created and tested on a Windows 7 machine running IIS 7.5 using ASP.NET 4.0. Everything works fine on the dev machine. • Publishing an Excel spreadsheet using Microsoft SBS 2008 to a web page that is viewable by mobile ph

  I am getting well out of my “superuser” depth here and would love some support. At work we have an Excel workbook (*.xls format circa Office 2003) which maintains our “engineers” timesheet. This handles what events we are doing across the year and how many “work units” it is. As far as a workbook goes, it is fairly simple with just a few =SUM(range) cells and some linked across sheets (12 sheets, one for each month) It is stored on a server, in a folder that provides “management” with full access and “engineers” with read-only access. The workbook itself is read-only for “engineers” and full access for “management”. I think these permissions are controlled through Active Directory. The workbook is protected with a password, assumingly to allow “management” to edit it even if they are working at a terminal logged in as an “engineer”. This protection prevents “engineers” from going to certain cells to see formulae and therefore editing them. The workbook has a macro which saves and closes it ten minutes after opening. This is to stop other “management” from being locked out by any one person who has logged in with editing privileges. I hope this is making sense to someone... :S Now then, we have Microsoft Small Business Server 2008. We have a shiny new web-based login for when we are offsite so we can get to Exchange webmail and our internal site (which uses Sharepoint 3.0). “Management” would like to be able to publish this timesheet automatically after changes (they don’t want to have to do anything different to what they are currently doing) so that using an iPhone “engineers” can check on it while out of the office. I am currently having a look at “Excel Services” for Office 2007 on TechNet but I am not sure if I am running down the right garden path at the moment. < EDIT This seems to suggest that I have to have Sharepoint Server 2007, with no mention of Sharepoint 3.0... ... "MOSS builds on WSS by adding both core features as well as end user web parts" - Wikipedia entry for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) this is not good news... "...and using the ASP.NET APIs, web parts can be written to extend the functionality of WSS." Wikipedia entry for Windows Sharepoint Services. Could this bring back what I need? Is this good news? Do I need to start learning ASP.NET? • dig lookup different from system lookup

  Hello, I am running dd-wrt and I configured it's dns server to resolve a few hosts inside my network. When I use dig to lookup these hosts, they are resolved OK, but when I try to ping those hosts I always receive an unknown host error message.   I have a SSIS package I am trying to schedule. I create a new job under SQL Server Agent. On the Command line tab of the jobstep, I choose "Edit the command-line manually". The changes are retained as I switch from tab to tab within the job step but whenever I exit and save the job, the changes are lost. Any ideas what's going on? I'm on SQL Server 2008.

  When I try to select the following "File Open Web Site" or use the shortcut key "Shift + Alt + O" (which does the same), Visual Studio 2008 hangs with the loading mouse icon for about 8-10 seconds then the file. But if I do "File Open Project/Solution.." or "File Open File..." the explorer window comes up in under a second, instantly most times.   Hi, I am trying to execute a SSIS 2008 package on a 64-bit OS and import Excel 2003 files to SQL Server 2008. I have created an OLEDB Connection to the Excel file with a Connection String that retrieves the Excel file from a variable, inside the ForEach Loop Container. The Run64BitRunTime is set to false. I am not able to edit the SQL Command on the OLEDB Source in the Data Flow task. It returns an error : Error 2 Validation error. Load List Staged Table: Load List Staged Table: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER. The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "List OLEDB to Excel" failed with error code 0xC0202009. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the AcquireConnection method call failed. 0 0 Appreciate any help.

I have been informed that I need to reduce the total number of tables in the shared hosting environment because of performance issues relating to too many tables. My question is: Could/Should the 50 2-Field lookup tables be combined into a single 3-field table with 'id-field_name-data' Fields? Even if this can be done, I will have a lot of work to do on the PHP user application. My other choice is moving the DB's to a dedicated server at much higher hosting cost. I don't believe my 200 table DB's are actually causing any performance issues on this shared hosting server, at least not from the user application standpoint. There are never more than 10 of these tables joined in any single query; although I have seen some very-slow queries generated by phpmyadmin on these DB's.

This is the weirdest thing: For some reason, when I'm running VS 2008 in XP, and I use the 'Advanced Appearance settings' control panel to change the Size of menu items in all applications, Visual Studio 2008 is unaffected by the change. (That's Control Panel - Display - Appearance tab - Advanced - select 'Menu' from the item drop-down, and change the Font size) Anyone else noticed this? Is anyone aware of a fix? Thanks in advance!
