• Introduction to the ADF Debugger

  Not that you'll ever need this blog entry - after all there are never bugs in the code that YOU write. But maybe one day one of your peers will ask you for help debugging their ADF application so here we go... One of the cool features of JDeveloper and ADF is the ADF Debugger - a way to debug the declarative pars of Oracle ADF. The debugger goes beyond your regular Java debugger and shows you in a clear way specific information related to Oracle ADF - things like where are you in the taskflow/region hierarchy, what is in your various scopes, what is the value of a specific EL and much more. However, from the number of posts on OTN where people are saying "I placed a System.out.println() to see what the value was...", it seems that not many are familiar with the power of the debugger. So here is a short demo that shows you some aspects of the debugger such as: Setting breakpoints on various ADF artifacts The ADF structure window The ADF Data window The EL Evaluater window Want to learn more about debugging ADF applications - I highly recommend that you go back in time to 2009 and attend Steve Muench's OOW presentation about ADF debugging. • Is these company terms good for a programmer or should I move?

  Here are some of the terms and conditions set forward by my employer. Does these make sense for a job like programming? No freelancing in any way even in your free time outside company work hours (may be okay. May be they wanted their employees to be fully concentrating on their full time job. Also they don't want their employees to do similar work for a competing client. Completely rational in that sense). - So sort of agreed. Any thing you develop like ideas, design, code etc while I'm employed there, makes them the owner of that. Seriously? Don't you think that its bad (for me)? If I'm to develop something in my free time (by cutting down sleep and hard working), outside the company time and resource, is that claim rational? I heard that Steve Wozniak had such a contract while he was working at HP. But that sort of hardware design and also those companies pay well, when compared to the peanuts I get. No other kind of works allowed. Means no open source stuffs. Fully dedicated to being a puppet for the employer, though the working environment is sort of okay. According to my assessment this place would score a 10/12 in Joel's test. So are these terms okay especially considering the fact that I'm underpaid with peanuts?

• Using position function for accessing particular node when using While Activity in SOA 11.1.1.5

  Hi If you are using while activity in SOA Suite 11.1.1.5 and within loop you have a requirement to access repeating node of XML. You might need to use below XPATH expression for accessing the node. Here is the XML that I am using for this example <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?> David DemoJob 1 2012-04-15 40000 0 10 Steve TestJob 1 2012-04-15 40000 0 10 Here you can notice that Emp node is repeating i.e. EmpCollection node will contain multiple employees. Now in loop one of assign activity you need to access a particular node for e.g. For first time loop runs you want to access first node and second time second node and so on. You need to make use of postion() function like bpws:getVariableData('Receive1_Read_InputVariable','body','/ns4:EmpCollection/ns4:Emp[position()=$loopCounter]/ns4:job') Please Note: Here loopCounter is a variable that we have created of type xsd:int and prior to loop we have initialized a value of 1. Loop will run depending on the number of Emp nodes present at runtime. For that in while Activity you can use below XPATH expression ora:countNodes('Receive1_Read_InputVariable','body','/ns4:EmpCollection/ns4:Emp')=bpws:getVariableData('loopCounter') Do let me know in case of any issues or concern. Now we’re back to highlight the most popular techniques, tricks, and services. By far and away, Xmarks was the most frequently mentioned service. For the unfamiliar, Xmarks is a bookmark syncing service that is packed with features. Not only does Xmarks sync bookmarks between browsers and/or computers it also supports iOS, Android, and BlackBerry (mobile integration requires an upgrade to the premium account). In addition to syncing the bookmarks it also integrates with your search results so you can see how other Xmarks users have ranked sites within your search results. Steve-O-Rama highlights one of the many benefits of Xmarks: Xmarks seems to do the job for me. I’ve got a handful of machines, each with three or four browsers; over the years, I’ve accumulated thousands of bookmarks, stretching across many areas of interest. Trying to keep them all straight had been quite a struggle until Xmarks came along. I freaked out when the company was acquired by LastPass, but was subsequently relieved when they continued the free service. Xmarks has a very nice web interface to access, export, search, organize, and do many other things with your bookmarks. In this way, even if I’m on the go, I can access every bookmark I’ve made. • MVC Scaffold Template Not Generating?

  Been working on an MVC project and my templates were not generating. I first created my Model inside my "Models" folder, then did a quick compile. Next I went to the Views folder to get it created, right click and say "Add View" then I clicked the checkbox to create an edit page. What happened was the template would never seem to pull in my Model, it would just have the default header items, but the entire model was missing.  My model was defined as follows: public class LogOnModel { [Required][Display(Name = "User name")]public string UserName;[Required][DataType(DataType.Password)][Display(Name = "Password")]public string Password;[Display(Name = "Remember me?")]public bool RememberMe; } See anything wrong with that? I couldn't figure out why each time I created my View and selected the option to create the "Edit" scaffold automatically, it would come up blank. Turns out I'm missing my get / set methods on the Model class items. Here's my code with the correct setup: public class LogOnModel { [Required][Display(Name = "User name")]public string UserName { get; set; } [Required][DataType(DataType.Password)][Display(Name = "Password")]public string Password { get; set; }[Display(Name = "Remember me?")]public bool RememberMe { get; set; } }  I hope that helps someone out, it's pretty simple when I look at it now, but that's always the case!  ~ Steve

So certainly the software engineering community is aware of these issues. But I feel like our aggregate society does not appreciate how these issues can plague working systems and applications. As Steve McConnell notes: ...Unlike financial debt, technical debt is much less visible, and so people have an easier time ignoring it. If this is true, and I believe that it is, then I fear that governments and businesses may defer regular maintenance and fortification against hackers until it is too late. [Much like NYC and the steam pipes.] My Question: Is there a way that we can avoid the software equivalent of NYC and the steam pipes?

• Windows 7 Professional Cannot Connect to Share - Wrong password

  I know that this question has actually been asked a few times before, but every solution I found didn't yield any results on my end, I can't get my head around it: When I am trying to connect to a share on the network, I always get the response "The specified network password is incorrect". However, the password is definetly correct and it works if I connect from another machine. I changed the LAN Manager authentication level to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negiotated", I configured Kerberos encryption types to include all suites, rebooted (several times), but still - no luck. I can connect if I use my regular account with which I am logged in, but I need to connect with a different user since my log-in user has not enough privileges on the share. When I do that, the error above comes up. I'm really frustrated at the moment, this problem is driving me crazy. I'd be gladful for any possible solution to this. At the moment I'm using a workaround: I connect to a different machine via RDP, login with the user I have to use for the network-share connection and then I can map the drive and copy/paste from the RDP session to my local workstation. This is also working when I am connecting via RDP with my current login user and map the drive with the other user who has sufficent privileges. Tanks in advance, Thomas

• Microsoft WPC 12&ndash;Predictions

  Let me start by saying I have absolutely no inside knowledge, neither through the MVP program or any other means, that is fuelling what I’m about to write. This is entirely conjecture fuelled by speculation and too much Soporro beer at a fantastic Japanese restaurant tonight. Still, I present to you… D’Arcy’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2012 Predictions!!! So what can we expect to be announced at this year’s WPC? Much more than last year I’m hoping! Last year was sort of encouraging the troops to carry on with the Windows 7 messaging even with Windows 8 looming in the distance. It also showed Microsoft’s slant towards Private Cloud in addition to Azure. This year, we’re going to see a shift to a battle cry – Windows 8 is Coming, Windows 8 is Coming! I expect we’re going to hear an RTM date for Windows 8 from Steve Ballmer tomorrow, in addition to dates surrounding Windows Server 2012. We’ll also hear some announcement around Windows Phone 8, but I’m not really sure what – that whole piece is still quite muddy; are we going to actually *see* Windows Phone 8 devices this week? That would be great, but I imagine those types of announcements might be left for Build. Speaking of Build, I’m expecting an announcement on a date for a Build conference this Fall, probably late October. If any announcements are going to be made around Office 15, the schedule isn’t hinting at it. In fact, other than Office 365 there’s not much mention of Office in the conference sessions – either a red herring, or telling that Microsoft has another announcement coming later. The tagline of the conference is “A New Era. Together.” It’s obvious Microsoft is wanting to leverage WPC to rally their partners to carry the Windows 8 banner into the field of battle this fall when it ships. D

• M-Audio Delta starts up at wrong sample rate

  When the PC starts my M-Audio Delta 66 is using 48000kHz sampling rate when it is set for 44100 in Envy24. This causes audio to play slower than it should. This is in Kubuntu 14.04 on my new PC using an AMD A8 6500 with 8GB. When I first installed it seemed okay, but at some point it went wrong and has been doing this consistently since then. Kernel is 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:31:42 UTC 2014 i686 athlon i686 GNU/Linux steve@slarti:~$ cat /proc/asound/card2/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED format: S32_LE subformat: STD channels: 10 rate: 48000 (48000/1) period_size: 441 buffer_size: 3528 I can get it to switch to 44100 if I disable/enable the Delta in Pulseaudio volume control, but I have to do this every day and the sound still seems distorted. I can't see any issues in any of the config or log files I can find. If I boot the PC with a Mint Live USB it starts at 44100 and sound fine. Originally reported on Youtube is playing at the wrong speed - maybe soundcard related, but I'll close that and have this more relevant question instead.

• VS2012 Coded UI Test closes browser by default

  *** Thanks to Steve St. Jean for asking this question and Shubhra Maji for answering this question on the ALM champs list *** 01 – Introduction The default behaviour of coded UI tests running in an Internet Explorer browser has changed between MTM 2010 and MTM 2012. When running a Coded UI test recorded in MTM 2012 or VS 2012 at the end of the test execution the instance of the browser is closed by default. 02 – Description Let’s take an example. As you can see the CloseDinnerNowWeb() method is commented out.  In VS 2010, upon running this test the browser would be left open after the test execution completes. In VS 2012 RTM the behaviour has changed. At the end of the test run, the IE window is closed even though there is no command from the test to do so. In the example below when the test runs, it opens 2 IE windows to the website. When the test run completes both the windows are closed, even though there is no command in the test to close the window. 03 – How to change the CUIT behaviour not to close the IE window after test execution? This change to this functionality in VS 2012 is by design. It is however possible to rollback the behaviour to how it originally was in VS 2010 i.e. the IE window will not close after the test execution unless otherwise commanded by the test to do so. • Bonnie does not provide speed for Sequential Input / Block

  I'm using ProxmoxVE and I would like to run some benchmarks regarding performances of this product. One of these benchmarks is bonnie++ ; it runs very well in a VM (qemu-kvm) but when I run it in a conainer (openVZ), it does not provide me reading speed (only writing). I don't understand why... Does anyone know what's happenning ? VMs ans Containers are Debian 7.4. Here's the output of bonnie in the container: root@ct2:/# bonnie++ -u root Using uid:0, gid:0. • How do i impress employers with my resume?

  I built a entire website from scratch in 10days which looks and feels professional with the site being unique. The site has features like logging in, sending activation emails, tag/content search (lucence.net), syntax highlighting (prettify) and a diff (one of the js diffs), markup for comments all on this site and autocomplete in a textbox (remember, 10days). I wrote i have 5+ years of C# experience (i could lie and say more but smart employers will know its only 8 years old and 1.1 is very different from what we use now). I had employers REPEATEDLY say they are looking for someone who has more C# experience... wtf. Maybe they don't read my CV, maybe they dont believe it or ignore me because i am not yet a graduate. I laughed when i first read Steve Yegge The Five Essential Phone Screen Questions as i knew all of that (although i still never used graph datastruct nor know much about it). I'm pretty sure competency wise i can do the job. I am also positive no one noticed i have markup, a diff, autocomplete nor email activation/forget password (i offer a test user account). So maybe my site/example work isnt impressive bc you dont realize what is in it. In short i dont think they read my CV or notice my site. How do i impress employers? PS: The problem is i dont get to the interview. I had one and ruined it by speaking too technical to the PM because i was nervous. The other 25+ jobs either didnt contact me or was kind enough to send a rejection email.

• When creating a GUI wizard, should all pages/tabs be of the same size? [closed]

  I understand that some libraries would force me to, but my question is general. If I have a set of buttons at the bottom: Back, Next, Cancel?, (other?), then should their location ever change? If the answer is no, then what do I do about pages with little content? Do I stretch things? Place them in the lone upper left corner? According to Steve Krug, it does not make sense to add anything to GUI that does not need to be there. I understand that there are different approaches to wizards - some have tabs, others do not. Some tabs are lined horizontally at the top; others - vertically on the left. Some do not show pages/tabs, and are simply sequences of dialogs. This is probably a must when the wizard is "non-linear", e.g. some earlier choices can result in branching. Either way the problem is the same - sacrifice on the consistency of the "big picture" (outline of the page/tab + location of buttons), or the consistency of details (some tabs might be somewhat packed; others having very little content). A third choice, I suppose is putting extra effort in the content in order to make sure that organizing the content such that it is more or less evenly distributed from page to page. However, this can be difficult to do (say, when the very first tab contains only a choice of three things, and then branches off from there; there are probably other examples), and hard to maintain this balance if any of the content changes later. Can you recommend a good approach? A link to a relevant good blog post or a chapter of a book is also welcome. Let me know if you have questions.

• Why am I getting [mount error(22): Invalid argument] while trying to mount SMB network drive?

  Disclaimer: I am very new to Linux :) Anyway, onward: I have a fresh instance of Ubuntu Server (12.04.1 LTS) running on my network and I want to mount a network drive to the server so I can access the contents. The network drive is a SAMBA compatible drive running Darwin OS. If I run the following command: smbclient -L //192.168.0.2 -U myuser It prompts me for the password and then displays output similar to: Domain=[SERVER01] OS=[Darwin] Server=[@(#)PROGRAM:smbd PROJECT:smbx-105.4.0] Sharename Type Comment --------- ---- ------- Comp Staff's Public Folder Disk CompRaid03 Disk Dropbox Disk Groups Disk IPC$ IPC Public Disk Users Disk compstaff Disk However, when I try and mount the CompRaid03 share, using this command: sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.0.2/CompRaid03 /mnt/myshare -o username=myuser I get the same password prompt, but after putting the correct password in, I received this error: mount error(22): Invalid argument dmesg | tail returns: [23576.037373] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -22 I don't understand what is wrong with this command. I've managed to mount a share on my current (Windows 8) machine using basically the same command but with a different IP address and share name (obviously). I've spent a good few hours trying to solve this and got no where. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve EDIT As suggested I've also trued using "user=" instead of "username=": sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.0.2/CompRaid03 /mnt/svnrepo -o user=myuser This results in the same "Invalid argument" error.
