  • CUPS causes printer to click and doesn't print

    - by Pez Cuckow
I'm suffering a strange problem with my Cannon iP4850 when trying to use CUPS on a Raspberry Pi (this is not RPi specific, please do not vote to move it). When I plug the printer into my Laptop (OSX) or my Desktop W7 it identifies as a iP4800 and prints perfectly. So I plug it into the Pi (running debian), set it up in CUPS enable sharing and can now see the iP4800 series shared on the network. However if I print to it (using AirPrint etc...); the file gets to CUPS safely (shows in the queue) but when it tries to print the printer clicks (like a loud thunk) 3/4 times and then gives in, with a double amber flashing light. In cups it shows as job completed. Do you know why using the pi and cups would cause what appears to be a hardware fault and what I can do to fix the problem or to provide further debug info? Thanks for your time! • Wired to wireless bridge in Linux

    - by adrianmcmenamin
I am attempting to set up my Raspberry Pi as a bridge (but I think this is not a question specific to the hardware) - using Debian wheezy. I have a hostapd.conf: (some details changed for security)... interface=wlan0 bridge=br0 driver=nl80211 auth_algs=1 macaddr_acl=0 ignore_broadcast_ssid=0 logger_syslog=-1 logger_syslog_level=0 hw_mode=g ssid=MY_SSID channel=11 wep_default_key=0 wep_key0=MY_KEY wpa=0 (yes, I know WEP is no good) And this in /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback iface eth0 inet dhcp allow-hotplug wlan0 iface wlan0 inet manual wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf iface default inet dhcp auto br0 iface br0 inet dhcp bridge-ports eth0 wlan0 Everything seems to come up ok, but I cannot associate with the bridged wireless connection - even though the flashing lights on the USB stick suggest packets are being exchanged. I have read somewhere that not all cards/devices will run in hostap mode - they won't pass packets in one direction: is that right? (The info was a bit old)- this my card: [ 3.663245] usb 1-1.3.1: new high-speed USB device number 5 using dwc_otg [ 3.794187] usb 1-1.3.1: New USB device found, idVendor=0cf3, idProduct=9271 [ 3.804321] usb 1-1.3.1: New USB device strings: Mfr=16, Product=32, SerialNumber=48 [ 3.816994] usb 1-1.3.1: Product: USB2.0 WLAN [ 3.823790] usb 1-1.3.1: Manufacturer: ATHEROS [ 3.830645] usb 1-1.3.1: SerialNumber: 12345 So, what have I got wrong here?

  • trouble connecting ups

    - by Jure1873
I've got a riello UPS connected to my server through USB. The output from dmesg is: [1362998.520035] usb 2-2: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 7 [938715.763270] usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [1363008.726243] input: Ups Manufacturing RS232-USB converter as /class/input/input7 [1363008.749408] input: USB HID v1.00 Gamepad [Ups Manufacturing RS232-USB converter] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-2 Now the program for controlling the UPS is expecting me to input the device path (/dev/ttyUSB0), but it doesn't get created. What is /class/input/input7 and where is it? Do i have to install additional drivers?

  • Unable to install USB drivers for android

    - by Dave
I'm running Win XP 64bit and am connecting a Motocliq to my computer. The device is recognized by windows and shows up in the device manager (Motorola ADB Interface), however when I try to install drivers (manually, from the usb_driver revision 3 provided by Android) it fails giving the error "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software." Does anyone else have experience installing this drivers on XP64bit/Motocliq?

I've got a Broadcom BCM43228 mPCIe card which came with my motherboard (ASUS ROG Maximus V Extreme, can't seem to find a link to what the card is) which is working great for WiFi right now, but I can't detect the Bluetooth hardware onboard. • How can find the USB wireless adapter into the dmesg log file?

    - by AndreaNobili
I am pretty new in Linux (RaspBian for RaspBerry Pi but I think that there are not difference) and I have to install an USB wireless network adapter (the product is the TP-Link TL-WN725N, this one: http://www.tp-link.it/products/details/?model=TL-WN725N ) Now, I think that this is not automatically recognized by my system because if I execute ifconfig command I obtain the following output: pi@raspberrypi ~ $ ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr b8:27:eb:2a:9f:b0 inet addr:192.168.1.8 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:475 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:424 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:34195 (33.3 KiB) TX bytes:89578 (87.4 KiB) lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) So now it see only my ethernet network interface and not the wireless. So I was thinkig to try to see into the dmesg, but I don't know what have I to see and how to select it into the dmesg output. For example by the following command I can see the line of the dmesg log file relate to my ethernet port: pi@raspberrypi ~ $ cat /var/log/dmesg |grep -i eth [ 3.177620] smsc95xx 1-1.1:1.0 eth0: register 'smsc95xx' at usb-bcm2708_usb-1.1, smsc95xx USB 2.0 Ethernet, b8:27:eb:2a:9f:b0 [ 18.030389] smsc95xx 1-1.1:1.0 eth0: hardware isn't capable of remote wakeup [ 19.642167] smsc95xx 1-1.1:1.0 eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1 But what can I try to search for the USB wireless adapter? • Windows 7 DVD doesn't boot up, neither does USB. :'(

    - by Manan Shah
My problem is that i'm not able to install windows 7. Been trying to install this since past 1 week. The methods i've tried are: I have a windows 7 bootable DVD which doesnt boot up. (I've set BIOS to boot from DVD ROM first but it just won't boot from the DVD). Tried to install Windows 7 from the same DVD to a friend's PC and it worked. So the DVD has no issues. I tried to run 'Setup.exe' from within the DVD. The two options pop-up 'Check compatibility' and 'Install now'. On clicking install now, after sometime, an error is encountered with the message 'Windows was unable to create a required installation folder' error code:0x8007000D. I am running Windows XP Professional and there's only one user on the PC which is the Admin, so i do not know why is the setup not getting permissions. I've also uninstalled my antivirus, CD burning software, disabled firewall and disconnected all other devices, but its still the same. I tried to install it from a USB device by making it bootable but that too doesnt work. (Yes the mobo supports booting from the USB). The problem is that XP does not recognize a 'USB' device on boot. Rather it shows this USB stick as a removable 'Hard Drive'. Furthermore, i changed the order of Hard Drive boot to boot from this removable Hard Drive first, it still boots my existing OS. Is there anything else that can be done? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :) Please ask if any other information is required, this post is becomimg increasingly long to add any other details. PS: I want to dual boot windows 7 with my existing XP, but that would be after i manage to run the windows 7 setup in the first place. PPS: Please bare with any 'not-so-technical' terms, i am a beginner with this. Again, thank you for taking the time and trying to help, really appreciate it. :)

I have a computer that only has two SATA connections and I need to copy one SATA hard drive to another. Since I have to unplug the CD drive to copy the drives I need a USB-bootable utility. I have an old school copy of Norton Ghost (CD based): Ghost has always worked well for me in the past - I see there is a new "version 15" out but I'm not sure if it is worth buying. A friend has Acronis True Image on a USB drive: We tried to use that on the computer but it was unable to copy both partitions (restore partition and main partition). Of course there may be some problem with the drive that is keeping Acronis from working (it is just exiting with a lame error about not being able to copy the disks and no error code or detailed information), but I'm interested in knowing if there is a better, more solid, or widely used solution that I should invest in. What usb-bootable utilities can I use to copy SATA hard drives?

  • Install Windows 7 x64 from a separate partition on same hard drive (no DVD/USB)?

    - by Fraser
I'm currently running Windows XP 32-bit, and want to install Windows 7 64-bit. However, my DVD drive is broken, and the only USB sticks I have lying around are USB 1.1 only (SLOW!). So I tried (as suggested would work for a USB stick by several online guides): Created new primary partition (formatted NTFS) Set that partition as active Copied contents of Win7 x64 ISO Downloaded the 32-bit bootsect.exe Ran bootsect /nt60 F: However, when I boot into the new partition, I only see a blinking cursor on a blank screen; nothing happens. Any ideas?

  • How can I chainload a USB drive from GRUB2?

    - by magic.plane
I'm using GNU GRUB version 1.99-12ubuntu5, booted over the network using PXE. I used grub-mknetdir to generate the GRUB image and directory tree, which I'm serving on a TFTP server using Tftpd32 in Windows. I've put the latest version of Clonezilla on my USB drive using Tuxboot. Right now, in GRUB's CLI, using ls lists only the (pxe) device, even if the USB drive is plugged in before the computer is on. Is there any way I can chainload Clonezilla on my USB from GRUB, which is booted over the network?

  • Want to install OS from USB instead of CD : How to deal with *.img image files?

    - by claws
I'm on windows. I'm trying DragonflyBSD operating system. as you can see here: http://www.dragonflybsd.org/download/ there are two kinds of images CD (.iso) and USB (.img) files available for download. I downloaded *.iso and using UNetbootin to make a bootable USB stick. But its taking hell lot of time. Its been 2 hours and its just 50% done(9k of 18k files). I'm really pissed off now! I used *.iso because I didn't know how to deal with *.img files. Will it be quick *.img file? How to use it to make bootable USB?

  • Does a USB to RJ-45 console cable exist?

    - by Carl Flippin
I am aware of the RJ-45 to DB9 adapter commonly used on cisco routers to access console. I am aware of the USB to DB9 adapters to allow laptops without serial to get a serial port. I am looking for a USB to RJ-45 adapter so I don't have to chain two adapters together. I have searched everywhere but even the pre-packaged solutions seem to have the two adapters chained together. Does such a thing exist? If it doesn't is there some technical reason it cannot? It seems like a manufacturer would just have to wire the DB9 end of the USB adapter differently and it would work just fine plugged straight into the console port of the router.

  • Static when metal USB plug touches my case, and other electrical problems.

    - by Archagon
I have an aluminum PC case. Whenever the metal USB plug from my external drive contacts the front, I get crackling from my speakers, which are connected to an external USB soundcard. (This crackling happens even if they're not connected to the actual output jack.) A few possibly related problems: my audio occasionally starts popping once every few minutes, and my USB devices sometimes play the "connected" sound in Windows even though they're already connected, as if they're briefly disconnecting. My guess is that this has to do with the grounding, but I'm not sure exactly what to do. My case has a round grounding wire, but I don't know where to attach it, and fiddling with it didn't seem to have any effect. Suggestions?

  • The speed of copying a file from a PC to a USB Flash drive started at 30MB/s and decreased to 5.8 MB

    - by Jian Lin
If I copy a 8GB file from the PC to a USB Flash Drive, the speed will start at around 30 MB/s... maybe 28 MB/s, and then gradually, after a minute, it will go down to 15 MB/s and finally settle down at 5.8 MB/s. But I thought if it is a hard drive, then probably there is the RAM cache and also the internal hard drive cache, and will make the copying of file from PC to hard drive appear fast at first. But for a USB Flash drive, there should be no internal cache for the USB Flash drive itself. Is there a RAM cache for it, so that's why the initial copying seems so fast?

  • Install Windows XP/7 without a CD drive when the BIOS does not support booting from USB devices

    - by David Pearce
I have a computer that has a dead CD drive in it and it seriously needs a new installation of Windows (XP is on it now, but Windows 7 does not sound that bad). At first I tried making a bootable USB drive, but it does not look like the BIOS supports booting directly from a USB drive. Is there some sort of boot loader that I can put onto the hard drive first and boot from the USB drive using that? If not, how else can I re-install Windows on the computer? Edit: The only bootable device the computer has it the network with PXE (although I have no idea how to do that) and it's three internal hard drives

  • Tool for creating system image from DOS (should be USB bootable) ..?

    - by Ahmad
I want to know if there's any decent tool which can be used to create the system image from DOS .. What I specifically want to do is to put the program in my FAT32 formatted USB, then boot the target computer from the USB so that the tool runs, and then it should be able to create a complete system image of the entire system, and store it on the USB itself .. Please note that I can ONLY do this from boot time because of other limitations .. I cannot go into any OS to do it from there .. So I need tools which can do this at boot time from DOS ..

  • Is a PCIE X1 card for USB 3.0 worth it?

    - by lelouch
I have a portable HDD on USB 3.0, and soon I'll have a 32gb flash drive on USB 3.0 as well. My motherboard is pretty old - and the next time I'll upgrade it is when I get a new CPU/mobo/ram. Slots on my mobo: PCIE X16 - For my GTX 260 2xPCI PCIE X1 I'm considering purchasing a PCI express X1 card like this - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PC-Laptop-2-USB3-0-Ports-PCI-E-PCI-Express-X1-Card-New-/280772000446?pt=AU_Networking&hash=item415f50babe Now the question: What are realistic (read/write) speeds I'll get in this setup, assuming I have 1 USB 3 device connected at a time, and the bottleneck is the PCIE?

  • Is it possible to put only the boot partition on a usb stick?

    - by Steve V.
I've been looking at system encryption with ArchLinux and i think I have it pretty much figured out but I have a question about the /boot partition. Once the system is booted up is it possible to unmount the /boot partition and allow the system to continue to run? My thought was to install /boot to a USB stick since it can't be left encrypted and then boot from the USB stick which would boot up the encrypted hard disk. Then I can take the USB key out and just use the system as normal. The reason I want to do this is because if an attacker was able to get physical access to the machine they could modify the /boot partition with a keystroke logger and steal the key and if they already had a copy of the encrypted data they could just sit back and wait for the key. I guess I could come up with a system of verifying that the boot has been untouched at each startup. Has this been done before? Any guidance for implementing it on my own?

  • Is it possible to live-boot VirtualBox from a USB flash drive?

    - by bw.
To clarify, I'm not asking if you can boot from USB from within VirtualBox. I would like to make a portable version of Windows 7 that I can run from a USB drive on any machine. I'm putting a distro of Linux on my laptop, but I manage a Windows domain at work so I'd like an easier management solution than trying to use Linux tools to interface with a Windows DC(as RDP to a DC is not always an option). The reason I'm inquiring about VirtualBox... I plan on carrying this portable installation with me and using it on multiple machines, so I would like to avoid driver conflicts (which I imagine would happen if I only installed Windows on a flash drive). Basically, I need a way to boot an installation of Windows 7 from USB that still allows me to install/remove/update programs as if it were installed on a standard hard drive, and not freak out over different hardware configurations. Please help, superusers!

  • Why does 'dd' not work for creating bootable USB?

    - by jdowner
Recently I wanted to create a bootable USB of Linux mint. I found that there was a lot of conflicting advice/experience about whether the 'dd' command could be used to create a bootable USB. I decided to download an ISO and try. While dd definitely put the image on the USB stick it was not bootable. So my question is what is the magic ingredient that will make this work or why has this approach persisted if it does not work? This is the command I used, dd if=/mint/iso/image of=/dev/sdb1 oflag=direct
