  • What video graphic card would permit ubuntu's standard driver to work well?

    I installed ubuntu 12.04. All seemed well until I installed the nvidia driver. Then crashola! This situation is untenable. It seems I cannot trust nvidia, and it seems that I cannot rely on ubuntu gurus to test 3rd party drivers. So, apparently some video card manufacturers do not care enough about the linux market to test their drivers, or are there too many 3rd party video cards so that ubuntu folks do not test any 3rd party video drivers? Hence the question: What video graphic card would permit me to use ubuntu's standard driver so that I do not have to rely on nvidia's or any other 3rd-party driver? Perhaps I could then install THAT card and have things work? The ubuntu standard driver actually worked prior to installing the nvidia driver, but not well, and that was because the display flickered, and flickering gives me a headache.

  • How can I install ATI Catalyst Video driver of Ubuntu 12.04.3?

    EDIT My computer is Thinkpad E420 with Intel HD3000 and ATI 6630m. I have reinstalled my Ubuntu12.04.3 yesterday. I had successfully installed Ubuntu and ATI Catalyst Video driver many times about half year ago following these links: How do I get AMD/Intel Hybrid Graphics drivers to work? What is the correct way to install ATI Catalyst Video Drivers (fglrx)? However, this time I have no luck with installing ATI Catalyst Video driver. I have tried version 13.4, 13.1, 12.8 of ATI Catalyst Video driver. It seemed that 13.4 doesn't support 12.04 any more, following this link , the lowest Ubuntu version supported by ATI 13.4 is 12.10 and for the reset of the ATI drivers, the kernel version and xorg version of Ubuntu 12.04.3 is too high to be supported. So, should I stay on ubuntu 12.04.1 with ATI 12.8, or there is any way to install ATI driver on Ubuntu 12.04.3?

    I have a Samsung RC720 notebook with Intel Integrated Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M. As you can see it has two video adapters and Optimus is supposed to switch between them. But when I choose dedicated GPU in NVIDIA Control Panel and try to run, for example, GTA IV, it uses integrated graphics and I get very poor performance. I have already installed last NVIDIA and notebook drivers, chose high-performance in NVIDIA Control Panel, tried to execute with "Run with graphics processor..." context option and so on.     I have a Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808 laptop running windows 7 Ultimate with one VGA port and one HDMI port. It has one Intel HD Graphics family card and one NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M. Right now I have one monitor running via the VGA port, and also the basic laptop monitor. When I look at the monitor setup, I see one unused video card available. Can I have another monitor via the HDMI port? If I cannot run three monitors, is there some way I could make a large "single" desktop that extends over two monitors? For the sake of celerity, maybe something like having a virtual machine window that extends over two monitors. Could this maybe come from third party software?

    Hi, Since yesterday video and graphics on my Windows 7 desktop seem to have become smoothed out and blurred slightly and I'm not sure why. The last thing I did on the machine was play Fallout New Vegas for the first time. An example can be seen in the picture here screenshot - note how smoothed out the character on the right seems, lots of definition looks lost. It's really annoying and happening regardless of what I watch.   • Upgraded to a GTX 580 - no video signal on boot

    I have: New Corsair 550w PSU (should be more than enough) AsRock H61M u3s3 mobo (with latest updated BIOS) Just replaced my faithful HD 7790 GPU with a refurbished EVGA GTX 580 1.5GB. When I boot, it sounds like the PC boots to windows, and the 580's fan is spinning, but I can't get any video signal from the card. Old card and integrated graphics still work fine (when I replace and use those instead). I am using the DVI ports on the card with a DVI-VGA adapter until I can get my hands on a mini HDMI adapter tomorrow. Anyone ever heard of a GPU needed something special to make the VGA signal work? Hold down a key on startup or something? I can't even find a manual for this card.

    It would appear that Broadcast Television is often 1080i30 (60 fields/s), and non-movie DVDs (example, instructional or TV shows) are 60fields/s as well, at some lower resolution (480i?) However, almost all video that ends up on the internet, whether in x264-encoded content, Youtube, etc. is 30 frames per second, that is to say , it is progressive scan. However, when you watch content on your TV, I'm guessing the TV converts it to progressive for you, but the end result is a very fluid picture that "feels" quite a bit like 60frames/s. What is the best way to obtain this result when ripping interlaced content sourced from TV or DVDs? Can I rip a DVD that is 60 fields per second to 60 frames per second? I would imagine classic deinterlace filters do not do this, they merge fields and create a 30fps output. I'm using handbrake.

  • Pc not booting, no video output, hard drive noises

    My computer suddenly stopped booting up. I just came back from a week long trip, and it was working fine before I left. When I power up the computer now, it seems to power up just fine (leds on, fans working), but then there's no output on the screen at all, and there's a noise that seems to be coming from the HD, like it is trying to read something. After the noise starts, it does 6 cycles and then stops. I'm not sure but I don't think it did this noise when the pc was still working. I tried using the onboard video card instead but it made no difference. What could be wrong with my computer?
