• How does dropbox version/upload large files?

  Hey everyone, I have a free dropbox account (2GB), and I was wondering how the versioning of large files works. I have a full backup of all my webfiles that sites @ just over 1GB. After the initial upload of 1GB, everytime it syncs will dropbox figure out the delta of the file, or will it have to upload the entire thing again to version it? It would be cool to always have an up to date version of a large file, but I dont want to kill my bandwidth uploading 1GB everytime. Is this possible? Thanks,

• Touchpad not working after login in Ubuntu

  At some point my touchpad stopped working on Lenovo x220 under Ubuntu 11.10, after login. I have found two possible solutions for that online, but neither of them work. First, gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true and a second one, xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Off" 8 0 After looking more carefully into xinput I have realized that xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" outputs: Device Enabled (132): 0 This field seems to be stuck to zero, because trying to set it back to 1 by: xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Device Enabled" 8 1 doesn't seem to have any effect, e.g. I still have: Device Enabled (132): 0 Any ideas? • Is there a software like AutoCAD, but only 2D, not 3D?

  I love AutuCAD. It's powerful, easy to use, and fits engineering mind. It rocks when you want to draw 2D diagrams and shapes and one the cool features I like about it, is its snapping power. You draw a simple rectangle, then you can very easily create a circumscribe circle around it. However, new version of it are becoming really heavy (in size) and need high tech hardware, because of its powerful 3D capabilities, and rendering engines coming with it. I only want the 2D part of AutoCAD. Is there any software out there, which resembles AutoCAD (like having a console, where you can type L and get the line tool, or having snapping capability, etc.), but is small in size? In other words, what software can be named as AutoCAD 2D alternative?

• Lookups targeting merged cells - only returning value for first row

  I have a master worksheet which contains data that I wish to link to another 'summary' sheet using a lookup. However, some of the cells whose data I wish to include in the summary sheet are merged across two or more adjacent rows. To be clear, the 'primary' column A that I am using in my formula in order to identify the target row does not contain merged cells, but the column from which I wish to return a value does. I have tried VLOOKUP and INDEX+MATCH. The problem is that the data is only returned for the first row's key, and the others return zero (as though the cell in the target column were blank, where actually it is merged). I have tried inelegant ways around this, e.g. using IF statements to try to find the top row of the merged cell. However, these don't work well if the order of values in the summary sheet is different from that in the master sheet, as well as being messy. Can this be done?

• ESXi disaster recovery plan

  I have a Vmware infrastructure where I am using the free version of Esxi 5 . I cannot as a result use vmotion and the other cool features that come with a paid ESXI. I am using snapshots for the backups but they are stored on local hard drive. I need a better backup scenario where I can recover in the event of a harddrive failure. I tried openfiler but could not get it right. What backup method can I try given my situation?

• Recover partition table after DD command

  I executed the following command from a Ubuntu live cd terminal (dont ask why). dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb2 bs=512 count=1 Where sdb2 is a NTFS partition (third partition) on a disk. Suffice to say it is now messed up. When I boot into windows 7, it does show me E drive but when I click on it it asks me to format it. I am not ever sure what I did, did I mess up partition table or only the MFT? Is there any way to get the data back PLEASE HELP! this is very important :(

• How can you get MySQL statistics for a specific user?

  I've searched Google for a while on this and I'm not sure if it is easily or directly possible. I'm hosting a database on my cPanel server for a client which is accessed from their main website. As a result, I can't find a way to determine what amount of resources they are using. As there aren't any files under their account, cPanel reports the bandwidth at zero. I do know the stat programs don't monitor MySQL and that MySQL has a global statistics page that reports all usage on the server.

• How to extend a partition in Windows 2000 Server

  I have a Windows 2000 Server set up with RAID 5. I initially defined 2 136 GB logical disks 0 and 1. I have a small utility partition on disk 0 along with the C drive. I wish to extend the C drive to use disk 1 as well, which is now configured to drive D. I deleted drive D, but it is still in disk 1. I download partdisk.exe from MS, but am not sure how to accomplish what I want to do. I know I need to use extend, but I think I need to remove disk 1 and somehow add the unallocated space to disk zero, but am not at all confident on how to do it.

• RAID 5 heavy IO hard freezes Ubuntu: Why?

  I have a software RAID 5 partition on LVM in Ubuntu (desktop, actually, but I'm using it as a server). I have been rsyncing a ton of data to it, and the computer was hard freezing, as in I needed to press "Reset". So I thought it was rsync. But I decided I'd try a dd if=/dev/zero of=/path/to/raid5 and sure enough, the computer locked up. Did an identical dd to a JBOD partition on the same machine, and it didn't crash. Assuming a clean RAID5 partition, tri-core processor 2GB of ram, 6GB swap, what could be causing this?

• Windows Vista Home memory usage problem [closed]

  Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

  In Facebook, some links to articles or videos appear to be genuine links, but in fact there are leading to some "content viewing" Facebook apps, like "Dailymotion", "The Guardian", or "Yahoo!". Those apps usually require access to my email address, basic info, birthday, location, plus right to post on my behalf. Some even say in small letters "To use this app, you will be upgraded to Facebook Timeline": Workaround: Copy the name of the article/video Paste it into Google within quotes First result is the original unencumbered content. I don't want to install Facebook spyapps that provide zero value, so I do this every time. QUESTION:Is there a Greasemonkey script or similar, that would perform these 3 steps for me? • Opening notebooks

  I have a Compaq CQ40 which has a defective CPU fan, it seems unable to cool the notebook enough at this time, it is constantly running, and if you move the pc up/down to look under it, it makes some sort of chainsaw sound. I have tried to take out all the screws underneath, but I still have a problem with the plastic cover on the above; I am afraid I might break it since it seem to be connected with plastic clips underneath. I have fixed notebooks before, but this one seem new, how can I open the plastic cover above without breaking it? Any advice, tips and tricks would be so nice to have, not only for this notebook, but any future notebook also I might need to repair. It would be nice if anyone here knows a place with video tutorials on this subject as well.

  In Excel I understand there is no mechanism to customise & re-label the Rows & Columns (i.e. Renaming Col. A to some text like "Item Number" and so on. My question is regarding if it's possible to start Row Numbering at zero, or to determine a pre-allocated number of rows which contain my Headers, and then the first Row with the detail is infact seen as Row 1? Reason for question is I work multiple INternational Projects and we use Excel to trsack alot of activities & issues. Oddly, many people will refer to, for example "Point 7"... Some people mean the ID 7 (which I have the first Column dedicated to ID Number), some mean Excel Row 7, which infact could be really ID 3, or 4 from Col. A.... Any easy way or workaround to just use the Excel Row Numbers but select from when Row 1 is counted?

• DFS Replication, Users HOME folder - seems not to catch all files... any hints?

  I amm moving stuff out of a file Server. I am using DFS for that - the Folders are anyway in a DFS tree, so I can set up a replication temporarily, then drop the old Folder. Works nice, EXCEPT for the Folder containing the users home drives. Which, incidentally, is also the one I can not see all files in due to my permissions. Small Setup. We have 159mb in the users directories, 1280 files, 133 Folders original. The copy only has 157mb, 1269 files, 133 Folders. Anyone knwos of a way to find out what files are missing? IS this a Problem (could be some Caching files that are regenerated). Users are all offline (weekend) ;) This is pretty much the last share - all others had exactly ZERO issues.

• I run about 100 small traffic websites, what host would you recommend (expansion is planned)?

  I know there are plenty of suggestions like asmallorange, linode, etc, but how well do these apply to someone who is running 100 sites? Traffic can be anywhere from zero hits a month up to about 1,000. The host I'm using right now doesn't allow access to httpd.conf or other important apache features. If I had to guess, it seems like Linode or other services like it are right up my alley, however, I am not great with linux. I can get by alright in Ubuntu, but that's about it. Will this knowledge be enough to get by with Linode? What about domain name transfers? The way it works now for me is if someone has an existing site, I ask them to get the domain transfer code and then I send the domain name xfer code to my current host and they take care of the rest. Does Linode take care of domain name transfers? How do I do it?

  I am trying to semi-securely erase a bunch of hard drives. The following is working at 20-50Mb/s dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda But dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda seems not to work. Also when I type dd if=/dev/random of=stdout It only gives me a few bytes regardless of what I pass it for bs= and count= Am I using /dev/random wrong? What other info should I look for to move this troubleshooting forward? Is there some other way to do this with a script or something like makeMyLifeEasy | dd if=stdin of=/dev/sda Or something like that...

• My CPU hits 100°C... Help me!

  The safe limit for processors is typically 50°C or so, but I have found that my CPU likes to do up to 100°C. I have got these readings from SpeedFan 4.42. I have a Intel Quad Core unclocked. I am using the standard intel fan with heatsink that came with the prossesor My case is a Cooler Master and I have two fans installed on the case. I took the side off to see if that helped. It lowered the temp be 3C. I don't really want to blow the processor and I don't know how to cool it down.

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  Hi, I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful.   On a openVZ containing Deb7 I need to lock the maximum size of a folder, which is used to upload on a php based web server. The directory is synced, so I have to lock the maxsize. MAXSIZE should be upgradable by adding some physical disk later ... I want to use a file as a block device for a file system. So I have done : dd if=/dev/zero of=/disk2/filesystem.dat bs=1M count=100 Then, I made the filesystem on it mkfs.ext4 filesystem.dat Then I tried to mount it : mkdir /opt/filesystem ; mount /disk2/filesystem.dat /opt/filesystem My OpenVZ (it is on a VPS) has no loop module in the kernerl. So I got Could not find any loop device as usual under OpenVz So i think I have to use FUSE, but I really do not know HOW .... Any idea on locking the size of directory under OpenVZ ?

• How to convert excel individual cell values to percentage change values over time

  I have two years of excel data showing daily share prices of a particular stock. I want to change those values to show percentage change (on a daily basis) from the zero date (ie the first day of the two year period). I know that the formula for showing daily percentage change would be (second day/first day -1) and that I can click and drag on that formula to extend over the rest of the two-year time period. The formula I want would be, basically, (each day/first day-1). Is there an easy way to automate the script so I dont have to type it out 730 times?

  I typically require multiple SharePoint virtual machines for development purposes. I currently manually build these every time I need one, either starting from a fresh OS install or using sysprep when working with SharePoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2. I currently use VMWare, but am open to VirtualBox or Hyper-V. I'd like to be able to go from zero to a working VM with SharePoint, SQL and Visual Studio all through script. Is this a feasible task? Or are there more practical methods which would start from a VM with a fresh installation of an OS, and then use more standard unattended installs. • (How) does deleting open files on Linux and a FAT file system work?

  It's clear to me how deleting open files works on filesystems that use inodes - unlink() just decreases the link count to zero, and when the last file handle to the file is closed, the inode will be removed. But how does it work when using a file system that doesn't use inodes, like FAT32, with Linux? Some experiments suggest that deleting open files is still possible (unlike on Windows, where the unlink call wouldn't succeed), but what happens when the file system is uncleanly unmounted? How does Linux mark the files as unlinked, when the file system itself doesn't support such an operation? Is the directory entry just deleted, but retained in memory (that would guarantee deletion after unmounting in any case, but would leave the file system in an inconsistent state), or will the deletion only be marked in memory, and written at the time the last file handle is closed, avoiding possible corruption, but restoring the deleted files after an unclean unmount?
