• Ubuntu 12.10 TexLive 2012: Latex file would not compile

  I wrote a long report with chapters using TexLiVE 2009. When I move to 12.10, the system had upgraded to Texlive 2012. However, I found that some fonts were not working, whereas they were a part of the distribution (Texlive). Therefore, I uninstalled the whole thing (TexLive) and then reinstalled. Compilation command pdflatex myreport.tex I now have the following error while compiling: This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.4-1.40.13 (TeX Live 2012/Debian) \write18 enabled kpathsea: Running mktexfmt pdflatex.fmt I can't find the format file 'pdflatex.fmt'! How do I solve this issue?

  I need to fairly assign 2 experts from x experts (x is rather small - less than 50) for every n applications, so that: each expert has the same number of applications (+-1); each pair of experts (2-combination of x) has the same number of applications (+-1); It is simple to generate all 2-combinations: for (i=0; i<n; i++) { for (j=i+1; j<n; j++) { combinations.append(tuple(i,j)); } } But to assign experts fairly I need to assign a combination to an application i correct order, for example: experts: 0 1 2 3 4 fair combinations: counts 01234 01 11000 23 11110 04 21111 12 22211 34 22222 02 32322 13 33332 14 34333 03 44343 24 44444 I'm unable to come up with a good algorithm for this (the best I came up with is rather complicated and with O(x4) complexity).   While going through the css specificity concept, I understood the fact that it is calculated as a 4 parts 1) inline (1000) 2) id (100) 3) class (10) 4) html elments (1) CSS with the highest rule will be applied to the corresponding element. I tried the following example Created more than 10 classes <div class="a1"> .... <div class="a13" id="id1"> TEXT COLOR </div> ... </div> and the css as .a1 .a2 .a3 .a4 .a5 .a6 .a7 .a8 .a9 .a10 .a11 .a12 .a13 { color : red; } #id1 { color: blue; } Now, even though in this case there are 13 classes the weight is 130. • Need Help Unable to Mount Location

  I am not able to start Windows and am using a DVD copy of Ubuntu to start up. I see my 750 GB Hard Disk, but if I click it i get this error: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details. After googling for a while I think I need to do sudo apt-get install ntfsprogs but when I try that: E: Package 'ntfsprogs' has no installation candidate My problem is a lot like this thread

  I'm a complete newbie to ubuntu, I've already installed and reinstalled the Broadcom driver required done a numerous amount of steps on terminal but I can't seem to get wireless working.   I'm having a really hard time finding a great alternative for Macbook Pro (I have a MB pro '08). I'd like to return to ubuntu and need a kick-ass laptop. If you help, you've lead me back to linux :) Req: ubuntu friendly lots of memory 8G+ ssd 160GB+ great processor (intel sandy?) connect up to three external displays. this triple display looks cool No optical drive, NO DVD 13-17" dock. In place of the ridiculous optical drive (It's like having a floppy drive IMO): extra battery? 2nd ssd? extra graphics card? your suggestion The laptop should be designed for not having dvd. I can't find many, unless they are tiny 11"... I'm exited to know your answers!

  When I try to open the Windows Partition from Ubuntu I receive the error: Unable to mount 55 GB Filesystem Error mounting: mount exited without exit code 13: ntfs_mst_post_read_fixup_warn: magic: 0x04010400 size: 1024 usa_ofs: 1026 usa_count: 1026: Invalid argument Record 6 has no FILE magic (0x4010400) Failed to open inode FILE_Bitmap: Input/output error Failed to mount '/dev/sda2': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. • Ipython and Matplotlib in Ubuntu 13.10

  I've recently updated my Ubuntu to the 13.10 version. To my surprise, Ipython and Matplotlib are available only in versions prior to those I had in my previous 12.04 LTS install. When with the 12.04, I had the Julian Taylor PPA set up in my repositories, and that's why (I think) I had most up-to-date versions from both packages. The versions currently in 13.10 are: Matplotlib: 1.2.1 (http://matplotlib.org/index.html, most current version is 1.3.1) Ipython: 0.13.2 (http://ipython.org, most current version is 1.1.0 – September 2013) Is there any PPA available for the 13.10? The JTaylor ppa covers only as far as 12.10 (Quantal, link not available due to reputation rank in stack exchange) Should I install those packages outside apt? Isn't that troublesome?

  I am trying to patch Nautilus 3.2.1 on 11.10 with this patch (dual screen fix). So I've executed whole sequence: sudo apt-get install devscripts sudo apt-get build-dep nautilus apt-get source nautilus cd nautilus-3.2.1/ cp ~/nautilus.patch . patch --dry-run -p1 < nautilus.patch patch -p1 < nautilus.patch debuild And I've got finally fatal error (whole output here): dpkg-buildpackage: error: dpkg-source -b nautilus-3.2.1 gave error exit status 13 debuild: fatal error at line 1348: dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -D -us -uc failed Any ideas?

  Is there a way to remove kernel 3.1 from Oneiric? I downloaded and upgraded to 3.1 with these instructions: Open the terminal and run these two commands for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 11.10/11.04: wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...241006_all.deb sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.1.0-030100_3.1.0-030100.201110241006_all.deb Ubuntu (64-bit) For Ubuntu 11.10/11.04 (64-bit), issue these commands: wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...1006_amd64.deb sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.1.0-030100-generic_3.1.0-030100.201110241006_amd64.deb wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...1006_amd64.deb sudo dpkg -i linux-image-3.1.0-030100-generic_3.1.0-030100.201110241006_amd64.deb Everything went well. I was able to reboot quickly, but Firefox and Chrome constantly crash with Kernel 3.1. I am using Gnome 3.2 and saw improvement with 3.0.0.13 provided by ppa. • Ubuntu slow on HP 2000 notebook with Apu e1-1200

  I am using HP 2000 notebook which initially came with Windows 7 64bit. It has 4gb ram, AMD APU E1-1200 (1.4ghz) with Radeon 7310. With Windows it worked ok, so I decided to switch to Ubuntu. I installed 13.04 64bit at first, but responsiveness wasn't that good (opening windows, menus, Firefox, dash search) even if it was way better during the testing from live USB. I tried different kind of drivers for graphic card, 13.6beta, 13.4, fgrlx proprietary, upgraded kernel but the situation was the same. Then I tried installing 32bit version but the results were identical. After that I tried LTS version 12.04 and Xubuntu 13.04.. Responsiveness wasn't that different at all. Not sure what to do, and I wouldn't want to go back to Windows. This machine is not a beast, but it should be enough to deal with Unity or Xfce without troubles. Oh yes, I have insydeH20 BIOS with not so many options at my disposal. Thanks and best regards,

• I'm having trouble learning

  I'm only 13 but i'm genuinely interested in CS and would really like it if I could actually accomplish it. I've read books on C++ and C#, but ALL of them are the same!! They all say "Ok so since you have no prior knowledge in this what so ever, write a snippet that will do this and then make a GUI and then throw it into the Priafdhsu hfad then add the program and then program your own compiler to do some stuff". It's really getting annoying. I've payed near $40 (via Paypal) on ebooks that supposedly taught people to program with no prior knowledge. ALL OF THEM EXPECT ME TO ALREADY KNOW THE LANGUAGE. Is there something that I'm missing or am I suppose to be born with the property of CS? I would very much appreciate it if someone could explain this to me or possibly refer me to a tutorial on Programming Theory that starts from below ground zero as I have know knowledge in CS at all.
