• IBus client for GNU Emacs: Installed, but how do I start it?

  Having recently moved to Linux/Ubuntu, I'm looking for a good editor, and GNU Emacs seems to fit the bill. One thing I want from a text editor is the ability to handle Unicode Input Method Editors in a "normal way", across the board. For Ubuntu, the "normal way" is via IBus. However, emacs does not support IBus "off the shelf". I found a launchpad project: IBus client for GNU Emacs: ibus-el. I've installed ibus-el and set it up as per the Customize section of this emacswiki IBusMode page. I included the suggested "toggle" keybinding: ;; Use s-SPC to toggle input status It seems to have installed okay, but I have no idea how to invoke IBus and switch IMEs. s-SPC doesn't fire up the IBus language panel... • Why does apt-get install Skype easily while aptitude complains about MAJOR dependency errors?

  I was trying to install Skype on Ubuntu 13.04, from the Canonical repositories. With apt-get it worked easily, while aptitude had a huge problem with dependencies and proposed a complicated solution. Why is this so? • KVM not installed?

  When I run virt-manager, and click on the icon to create a new virtual machine, I get an error that KVM is not installed or is not loaded. I use Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 All qemu packages are version 2.0.0+dfsg-2ubuntu1 qemu-kvm and many other qemu packages installed... libvirt packages: 1.2.2-0ubuntu13.1 libvirt0 libvirt-bin libvirt-doc python-libvirt virt-manager 0.9.5-1ubuntu3 When I open terminal and enter lsmod | grep kvm I get nothing returned. No lines showing kvm or kvm_amd and no error of any kind. Hardware: Tyan S2877 with dual Opteron 285s I have the latest bios and don't see any setting in there to turn virtualization on or off. when I run sudo apt-get -s install qemu-kvm Here are the results: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done qemu-kvm is already the newest version. • Minimizing data sent over a webservice call on expensive connection

  I am working on a system that has many remote laptops all connected to the internet through cellular data connections. The application will synchronize periodically to a central database. The problem is, due to factors outside our control, the cost to move data across the cellular networks are spectacularly expensive. Currently the we are sending a compressed XML file across the wire where it is being processed and various things are done with (mainly stuffing it into a database). My first couple of thoughts were to convert that XML doc to json, just prior to transmission and convert back to XML just after receipt on the other end, and get some extra compression for free without changing much. Another thought was to test various other compression algorithms to determine the smallest one possible. Although, I am not entirely sure how much difference json vs xml would make once it is compressed. I thought that their must be resources available that address this problem from an information theory perspective. Does anyone know of any such resources or suggestions on what direction to go in. This developed on the MS .net stack on windows for reference.

• Documenting your database with Visual Studio 2012 SSDT tools

  The title of this post is interesting and something I am wishing you and your colleagues had a better way to do. I understand as I am asked this question frequently. I couple of weeks ago I was asked the same question by a customer who documents their database using the ApexSQL Doc tools which uses the extended properties on objects to create automated documentation. I thought that was super interesting and went down the path to see how we could could support the creation of this documentation while leveraging the Visual Studio 2012 SSDT Tools. What I found is was rather intriguing. There is a property called “Description” on all objects in the SSDT tools. This property is rather subtle and I am betting overlooked. To be honest, this property has probably been there for a while and I just never discovered it. Adding text to this '”Description” property it allows Visual Studio to create the commands for the extended properties directly to your schema which should be version controlled. As I did more digging there seemed to be extended properties at every level in the SQL database objects. This fills some rather challenging gaps and allows organizations to manage SQL Schema using the Visual Studio SQL database tools while allowing a way to automatically document the database. This will also work in the automation of the creation and alter scripts that can be generated as part f an automated build system. Now we essentially get a way to store, build and document the database in a nice little ALM package. Happy Coding!

The Essbase Excel Add In is about to be de-continued (see  Doc ID 1466700.1) in January '13. The (already out) version 11.1.2.2.x of the Excel Add In must be considered the last release of this particular program (Unless the guys from Applied OLAP bring out their own version next to the openOffice Add In that they already sport). As expected, SmartView achieved parity in functionality with Release 11.1.2.1.102 and ever since then it was just a question of time when our old buddy would get the shoe. For all users out there like me that have known and worked with the Excel Add In for the last decade(s) this is a loss. SmartView may have functionality parity, and may altogether be the stronger, open technology - capable of Planning forms, connection to HFM etc. .But (from my personal point of view) it will not give the end user the same direct access to his databases, with nothing between him and his Essbase Server. Of course it was to be expected that only one of the two could survive and it was obvious that this would be SmartView, so this does not come as a surprise. Still.A minute for an old friend . . . . . . Thank you, and let us look forward! Unless you had other plans for the upcoming season, why not spend it investigating SmartView for your Essbase interaction needs. We hear that the days between Christmas and new year hold unlimited potential to test out new things. • The premier support for Sun Cluster 3.1 ended

  In October 2011 the premier support for Sun Cluster 3.1 ended. See details in Oracle Lifetime Support Policy for Oracle and Sun System Software document. There no 'Extended Support' and the 'Sustaining Support Ends' is indefinite. But for indefinite 'Sustaining Support' I like to point out from the mentioned document (version Sept. 2011) on page 5: Sustaining Support does NOT include: * New program updates, fixes, security alerts, general maintenance releases, selected functionality releases and documentation updates or upgrade tools * Certification with most new third-party products/versions and most new Oracle products * 24 hour commitment and response guidelines for Severity 1 service requests *Previously released fixes or updates that Oracle no longer supports This means Solaris 10 9/10 update9 is the last qualified release for Sun Cluster 3.1. So, Sun Cluster 3.1 is not qualified on Solaris 10 8/11 Update10. Furthermore there is an issue around with SVM patch 145899-06 or higher. This SVM patch is part of Solaris 10 8/11 Update10. The 145899-06 is the first released patch of this number, therefore the support for Sun Cluster 3.1 ends with the previous SVM patches 144622-01 and 139967-02. For details about the known problem with SVM patch 145899-06 please refer to doc 1378828.1. Further this means you should freeze (no patching, no upgrade) your Sun Cluster 3.1 configuration not later than Solaris 10 9/10 update9. Or even better plan an upgrade to Solaris Cluster 3.3 now to get back to full support.

• Web browser downloads only open target folders - cannot open files

  After installing xubuntu packages in order to check xfce, I reverted back to gnome2. During the first login, I noticed that thunar was now selected as the default file manager. Preferred applications menu is also missing now, so I could not set nautilus as the default. I removed all the xubuntu packages (including thunar) and then when I tried to open a folder, I was asked to select the default file manager - that's how I got nautilus back. The next problem I'm now facing has to do with the downloaded files from web browsers: Open and Open containing folder options produce exactly the same result. If I double-click on a file, it'll just open the containing folder, instead of opening the file with it's associated application (e.g. libreoffice writer for .doc,.odt, smplayer for .avi,.wmv, etc). The problem happens both in Firefox and Chrome. Through nautilus, all files open correctly. Up until now I've tried the following: Delete/recreate mimeTypes.rdf in my FF profile Create a new profile in FF Delete/recreate ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list Already checked this similar article None of them worked. Any ideas on the issue would be appreciated.

  This is easily done for a single file type, as answered in How to associate a file type within Wine with a native application?, by creating a .reg for the desired filetype. But this is for AVI only. I use some wine apps (uTorrent, Soulseek, Eudora, to name a few) that can launch a wide range of files. Email attachments, for example, can be JPG, DOC, PDF, PPS... its impossible (and not desirable) to track down all possible file types that one may receive in an email or download in a torrent. So I neeed a solution to be more generic and broad. I need the file association to honor whatever native app is currently configured. And I want this to be done for all file types configured in my system. I've already figured out how to make the solution generic. Simply replacing the launched app in .reg for winebrowser, like this: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf] @="PDFfile" "Content Type"="application/pdf" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PDFfile\Shell\Open\command] @="C:\\windows\\system32\\winebrowser.exe \"%1\"" Ive tested this and it works correctly. Since winebrowser uses xdg-open as a backend, and converts my windows path to a Unix one, the correct (Linux) app is launched. So I need a "batch" updater to wine's registry, sort of a wine-update-associations script that I can run whenever a new app is installed. Maybe a tool that can: List all Mime Types types in my system that have a default, installed app associated Extract all the needed info (glob, mime type, etc) Generate the .REG file in the above format The tricky part is: i've searched a LOT to find info about how association is done in Ubuntu 10.10 onwards, and documentation is scarce and confusing, to say the least. Freedesktop.org has no complete spec, and even Gnome docs are obsolete. So far I've gathered 4 files that contain association info, but im clueless on which (or why) to use, or how to use them to generate the .reg file: ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list ~/.local/share/applications/miminfo.cache /usr/share/applications/miminfo.cache /etc/gnome/defaults.list Any help, script or explanation would be greatly appreciated!   After the introduction of the Recommended Patch Collections (RPCs) in late 2012, Fixed Assets development has released an RPC about every six months.  You may recall that an RPC is a collection of recommended patches consolidated into a single, downloadable patch, ready to be applied.  The RPCs are created with the following goals in mind: Stability:  Address issues that occur often and interfere with the normal completion of crucial business processes, such as period close--as observed by Oracle Development and Global Customer Support. Root Cause Fixes:  Deliver a root cause fix for data corruption issues that delay period close, normal transaction flow actions, performance, and other issues. Compact:  While bundling a large number of important corrections, the file footprint is kept as small as possible to facilitate uptake and minimize testing. Reliable:  Reliable code with multiple customer downloads and comprehensive testing by QA, Support and Proactive Support.  There has been a revision to the RPC release process for spring 2014.  Instead of releasing product-specific RPCs, development has released a 12.1.3 RPC that is EBS-wide.  This EBS RPC includes all product-recommended patches along with their dependencies. • How do you structure your shared code so that it is "re-findable" for new developers?

  I started working at my current job about 8 months ago, and its been one of the best experiences I've had as a young programmer. It's a small company, and both my co-developers are brilliant guys. One of the practices that they both have been encouraging is lots of code-reuse. Our code base is mainly C#, and we're using a centralized revision control system. The way the repository is currently structured, there is a single folder in which all shared class libraries are placed (along with unit tests for each library), and our revision control system allows for sharing or linking those libraries out to other projects. What I'm trying to understand at this point is how the current structure of the folder can be made more conducive for finding those libraries again. I've talked to the other developers about this, and they agree that it's gotten a little messy. I find that I am sometimes "reinventing the wheel" because I didn't realize that there was an existing piece of code that solved a particular problem. The issue is complicated further by the fact that we're sharing some code between ASP.NET MVC2, WinForms, and Windows CE projects, and sharing code between applications built against multiple versions of .NET. How do other people approach this? Is the answer in naming the libraries in a certain way or is it preferable to invest in some code-search software? Is the answer in doc comments? Should we be sharing libraries at all or should we simply branch the class libraries for re-use? Thanks for any and all help!

I have installed Windows, and with Windows 7 installed, all audio hardware works properly, so this isn't a hardware fault. I've looked at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto and have been unable to find my card in http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt . I have tried adding almost every conceivable model in the line "options snd-hda-intel model=MODEL" line I added to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. Update 2011-11-09 2:31 PM PST: I've gone to Control Center - Sound Preferences to attempt settings that make sound work. The "Hardware" tab shows one device: "Internal Audio 1 Output / 1 Input Analog Stereo Duplex." There are two output profiles listed in the selection box at the bottom of the tag: Analog Stereo Duplex and Analog Stereo Output. Neither cause sound to emit from the speakers. I've also run alsamixer on the command-line and ensured that everything is set to maximum and nothing is muted. Update 2011-11-09 5:15 PM PST: I've replicated the exact same symptoms in 11.10.
