• Clouds Everywhere But not a Drop of Rain – Part 3

  I was sharing with you how a broad-based transformation such as cloud will increase agility and efficiency of an organization if process re-engineering is part of the plan.  I have also stressed on the key enterprise requirements such as “broad and deep solutions, “running your mission critical applications” and “automated and integrated set of capabilities”. Let me walk you through some key cloud attributes such as “elasticity” and “self-service” and what they mean for an enterprise class cloud. I will also talk about how we at Oracle have taken a very enterprise centric view to developing cloud solutions and how our products have been specifically engineered to address enterprise cloud needs. Cloud Elasticity and Enterprise Applications Requirements Easy and quick scalability for a short-period of time is the signature of cloud based solutions. It is this elasticity that allows you to dynamically redistribute your resources according to business priorities, helps increase your overall resource utilization, and reduces operational costs by allowing you to get the most out of your existing investment. Most public clouds are offering a instant provisioning mechanism of compute power (CPU, RAM, Disk), customer pay for the instance-hours(and bandwidth) they use, adding computing resources at peak times and removing them when they are no longer needed. This type of “just-in-time” serving of compute resources is well known for mid-tiers “state less” servers such as web application servers and web servers that just need another machine to start and run on it but what does it really mean for an enterprise application and its underlying data? Most enterprise applications are not as quite as “state less” and justifiably so. As such, how do you take advantage of cloud elasticity and make it relevant for your enterprise apps? This is where Cloud meets Grid Computing. At Oracle, we have invested enormous amount of time, energy and resources in creating enterprise grid solutions. Spinning a VM on-demand will give some short term relief to your IT staff but is unlikely to solve your larger business problems. As such, even if IaaS is your first step towards a more comprehensive cloud, plan the roadmap around those higher level services before you begin. And ask your vendors on how they are going to be your partners in this journey. Capabilities like self-service access and chargeback/showback are absolutely critical if you really expect your cloud to be transformational. Your business won't see the full benefits of the cloud until it empowers them with same kind of control and transparency that they are used to while using a public cloud service.  Evaluate the benefits of integration, as opposed to blindly following the best-of-breed strategy. Integration is a huge challenge and more so in a cloud environment. There are enormous costs associated with stitching a solution out of disparate components and even more in maintaining it. • Difference in select for update of ... in Oracle Database 10g and 11g

  Hi, I found out that Oracle Database 10g and 11g treat the following PL/SQL block differently (I am using scott schema for convenience): DECLARE v_ename bonus.ename%TYPE; BEGIN SELECT b.ename INTO v_ename FROM bonus b JOIN emp e ON b.ename = e.ename JOIN dept d ON d.deptno = e.deptno WHERE b.ename = 'Scott' FOR UPDATE OF b.ename; END; / While in 10g (10.2) this code ends successfully (well NO_DATA_FOUND exception is raised but that is expected), in 11g (11.2) it raises exception "column ambiguously defined". And that is definitely not expected. It seems like it does not take into account table alias because I found out that when I change the column in FOR UPDATE OF e.empno (also does not work) to e.mgr (which is unique) it starts working. So is this some error in 11g? Any thoughts?

• Difference between adding MIME types in IIS via Websites vs Local Computer?

  What is the difference between adding MIME types in these 2 different situations? When in IIS 6 manager... Right click on the computer name (local computer) properties mime types Right click on the "Web sites" folder properties http headers mime types I'm guessing that perhaps option 1 adds MIME types for FTP also? However if that were true i'd expect to be able to add MIME types specifically in the properties of FTP (and not just websites). thanks for your help.

  I have a soundcard in my new PC at work that does not have the right driver installed, and I'm not sure what the manufacturer is. (it's a generic PC running Windows XP) Is there a way to figure out what device it is w/o having to open the thing up or pester my IT department? • Windows 7 driver search woefully slow

  Any thoughts on why the driver search (when installing a usb device) on windows 7 is woefully slow? Even when I click to disable trying to get a driver from windows update, it still takes 10min+ to either find a driver, or bail out. Is there a way to speed this up, or alternately, disable windows trying to find drivers, so I can manually install them in device manager?

  Recently I changed a friend's OS from a really virus filled windows 7 to Ubuntu ..but kept changing os's because lsusb wouldn't detect the camera.But after coming back to windows, the camera wasn't detected, though I must point out the device driver for the camera was never found. The Sony 'technician' told me that that since the dev-manager of windows 7 couldn't detect the camera , irregardless of whether the device driver was installed, the software change must have damaged the hardware. I was wondering if there is any truth to it.

  Hi All, I have got this error when using Enterprise Library 3.1 May 2007 version. We are developing a product and have a common lib directory beneath the Subversion Trunk directory <\Trunk\Lib\ into which we put all the third party DLLs. Inside this we have Microsoft\EnterpriseLibrary\v3.1 in which we have copied all the dlls from \Program Files\Microsoft Enterprise Library May2007\bin. Everything was working properly until one of the developers installed the source code on this machine. There were some dlls copied at the end of the source code installation and once that was done, he is not able to run the project anymore. He always gets this error 'Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data, Version=3.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040)' What is the problem here? I thought that when the source code was installed it was just supposed to build everything and copy in the bin directory within the source code parent directory. Also we have copied the Dlls from Microsoft Enterprise Library May 2007\bin directory into our product development directory and references into our project with a copylocal flag set to true. Can anyone help me out here RK

• Linux / apache web-server segmentation fault warnings

  Lately I have been receiving a lot of segmentation fault warnings on my web-server. The warnings look like: [notice] child pid xxxx exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I have consulted with the server provider (it is a dedicated redhat enterprise server) and they could not find anything. What I have done so far: Since the error I have already tried the following: I have added more ram I have turned off / turned on several php modules (they sent me to a web-page someone had the same problem, caused by an excessive amount of php modules) At the moments the warnings occur, there seems to be plenty of free ram left and the number of processes is very low (the number of httpd processes is about a quarter of the maximum allowed). What can be causing these errors? Edit: current versions apache: 2.0.52 php: 5.2.8 RHEL 4 Edit 2: Although I asked this a long time ago, I never was able to solve it until I upgraded to php 5.3.

• UEC - Can the Cluster Controller and Storage Controller be seperate systems?

  My department is implementing an Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud. I have done the testing and am quite comfortable with the 4 pieces, CC/SC, CLC, WS, NC. Looking at various documents below it appears the the Storage Controller and Cluster Controller (eucalyptus-sc and eucalyptus-cc) are always installed on the same system. • Using LDAP Attributes to improve performance for large directories

  We have a LDAP directory with more than 50,000 users in it. LDAP Vendor suggests maximum limit of 40,000 users per LDAP group. We have number of inactive users and those are being purged but what if we don't get below the 40,000 users? Would switching to using multivalued attribute at user record level instead of using LDAP groups yield better performance during authentication, adding new users, etc? I know most server software (portal, application servers, etc) use LDAP groups. • User account automatically filling up with dead.letter file

  I have one user account on a server with about 400 accounts that is filling up automatically. The dead.letter file in the users home directory automatically grows until the account is full (about 10 - 40 Mb per day). The user is using Microsoft Outlook to send and receive mail. What can be causing this and how can I avoid it from happening? Right now I have an emergency cron-job to delete the file but I would like "real" solution. Edit: The server version is Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 4) Edit 2: It seems mainly spam and I see different mailer headings (from php to Outlook Express) and a frequent appearing header is [email protected] Update: I have asked the hosting provider where I use that dedicated server to look into the problem as well, as it's their Control Panel that could be a cause of the problem.

• Setting up a minimalist linux environment

  All right, I've been messing around with various linux distros and a variety of window managers (I seem to change operating systems like most people change their pants), and I've gotten to the point where I know what I want but I'm not sure the best way to set it up. Here's what I want out of my programming machine: I don't want a status bar. I don't want a menu bar. When there are no windows open, the screen should show my desktop background and nothing else. I'll use alt+f2 to run things, and my shell prompt will tell me my battery life and the time. I'll open network controls and volume controls when I need them, no need for them to pollute the screen all the time. I want a good, simple terminal emulator. I'll be using it with tmux. It should have no title bar and, if possible, no app frame. It's ok if I have to run it in full screen mode to remove the app frame, but only if it still plays nicely with alt-tab and workspaces. I want a dirt-simple window manager. It needs to support transparency: I don't have a lot of screen real-estate and I often overlay the terminal on the browser and type out commands. I don't want a tiling-only system, for the above reason. Bonus points for tiling and overlaying. I'd like multiple workspaces. I prefer to have one gui per workspace. If I could 'pin' the terminal emulator to always show up in each workspace, that's bonus points. If not, I can have a terminal emulator in each workspace attached to the same tmux instance. I'd like a way to set up a keypress that always takes me to the current open terminal emulator. Currently, 90% of the time I only have two windows open: the terminal emulator and something else. In this scenario, alt-tab works like a toggle between the two. If I have another gui open (like a developer window with a web browser), this throws a wrench in my workflow. I'd like a way to assign, for example, 'super-T' to switch to the first open terminal emulator. Bonus points if I can also assign 'super-B' (or whatever) to switch to the first open browser. So far I've been messing around with gnome and tweaking it heavily to match my preferences, but that seems like overkill and I can never get it quite right. I've toyed with xmonad, but it's more for handling many windows, and I usually only have the two. and am considering fluxbox, but I was wondering if any of your minimalists out there had suggestions that might better match my workflow. I'm sick of fighting the window manager, I just want it to get out of my way. Edit: To make things clear, I am not considering switching to a mac/windows environment. I find programming in windows to be a bore, and I have no interest in buying new (read: mac) hardware. Thanks! -Nate

• Running Best Practice Analyzer on Windows 2012 yields error "Result file has not yet been generated"

  Whenever I run the Best Practice Analyzer on a Windows 2012 server with IIS installed, I receive the error: "There has been a Best Practice Analyzer error for Model Id 'Microsoft/Windows/WebServer'. The Result file has not yet been generated. Please perform the scan first and try again." I'm doing this from the "Local Server" section of the Server Manager. I'm logged in as with a domain credential that has administrative rights on the server. I don't know how to generate the result file or where it would be located. I have 4 servers, all with IIS and this is happening on all of them. The servers are practically brand new so there isn't anything really exceptional about their setup. Any suggestions on how to generate the result file? Thanks in advance.
