• Handover document for complete systems

  Hi, I need to create a handover document for a fairly large system consisting of all the stuff you'd expect from a telecom deployment: many servers, database clusters which copy some data between them in specific ways, tons of log files, both off-the-shelf and locally developed software, scripts, network configurations, local know-how, etc. It's really got as many sysadmin-typical elements, as development ones. The target of this document are in the first place sysadmins who take over the day-to-day operation tasks and some problem resolving, and in the second place people who want to learn about the system in general. Is there some place I can learn about how to write something like that? It could just as easily be a 10 page "what's where", as a 500 pages book about "all things telephony". Maybe it should be more than one document really. Please link some useful resources / books I could use for this task. PS: this is intended to be internal only, customer interactions etc. are out of scope here

• How to adapt a SOAP Service to REST in java?

  I need to integrate some services that are external and that are offered as SOAP Services. I don't like to use SOAP inside our system for a few reasons. I think from a pragmatic point of view it should be fairly easy to adapt SOAP to REST. This is not a SOAP vs. REST question! I'm just trying to collect java libraries, code, howtos etc. to accomplish this. Due the difference in its nature I don't expect a ready made solution. Just a couple of hints for tools and such to get going.

• What information do you capture when your software crashes in the field?

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those. • Would using a MemoryMappedFile for IPC across AppDomains be faster than WCF/named pipes?

  Context: I am loading and executing untrusted code in a separate AppDomain and am currently communicating between the two using WCF (using named pipes as the underlying transport). I am exchanging relatively simple object graphs using a reasonably coarse-grained API, but would like to use a more fine-grained API if it does not cost me performance-wise. I've noticed that 4.0 adds a MemoryMappedFile class (which doesn't need a physical file, so could be entirely memory based). What kind of performance gains could I expect to see (if any) by using this new class? I know that it would take some "infrastructure code" to get the request/response behavior of WCF, but for now I'm only interested in the performance difference.

• Zend Framework Autoloader question.

  In zend framework I register my namespace like this (in application.php): 'autoloaderNamespaces' => array( 'Cms_' ) And after this - I'd expect that Zend would always check that path in addition to Zend and ZendX paths if unknown class is called. But for some reason this doesn't work with for example view helpers. I still have to register a separate path for my view helpers even though view helper scripts are named according to Zend coding standards and are located in: Cms/View/Helper/ And this is how I register helper path in config file: view' => array( 'charset' => 'UTF-8', 'doctype' => 'XHTML1_TRANSITIONAL', 'helperPath' => array( 'Cms_View_Helper_' => 'Cms/View/Helper' ) ), So - I'm not sure why I have to register "Cms" namespace twice first through 'autoloaderNamespaces' and then through View "helperPath"? Shouldn't Cms namespace include Cms/View/Helper namespace? can someone plz clarify this:)

• Perl, creating a hash of hashes.

  Based on my current understanding of hashes in Perl, I would expect this code to print "hello world." It instead prints nothing. %a=(); %b=(); $b{str} = "hello"; $a{1}=%b; $b=(); $b{str} = "world"; $a{2}=%b; print "$a{1}{str} $a{2}{str}"; I assume that a hash is just like an array, so why can't I make a hash contain another?

• How do you get Windows Mobile Device Center to detect a Windows Phone 7 Series emulator?

  Hello, I'm running some tests and need to be able to get Windows Phone 7 Series emulator synced with an exchange account or local Outlook account via the Device Center. I'm using the unlocked version of the emulator so that i actually have a reasonable set of software on the phone to work with. When the emulator launches i expect the Device Center to detect it and start syncing (or prompt me for settings). This does not happen. I've tried adjusting the Connection Settings (COM2 and DMA) in the Device Center with no luck. Is this possible? Has anyone done it? Thanks in advance!

• CakePHP hasAndBelongsToMany (HABTM) Delete Joining Record

  I have a HABTM relationship between Users and Locations. Both Models have the appropriate $hasAndBelongsToMany variable set. When I managing User Locations, I want to delete the association between the User and Location, but not the Location. Clearly this Location could belong to other users. I would expect the following code to delete just the join table record provided the HABTM associations, but it deleted both records. $this->Weather->deleteAll(array('Weather.id' => $this->data['weather_ids'], false); However, I am new to CakePHP, so I am sure I am missing something. I have tried setting cascade to false and changing the Model order with User, User-Weather, Weather-User. No luck. Thanks in advance for any help.

• Is it really wrong to version documents using CouchDB's behaviour?

  This is one of those "I know I shouldn't do this but it's oh so convenient." questions. Sorry about that. I plan to use CouchDB for storing a bunch of documents and keeping their entire revision history. CouchDB does the versioning automatically, but it is strongly discouraged for programmer's use: "You cannot rely on document revisions for any other purpose than concurrency control." From what I've found on the CouchDB wiki, the versions can get deleted either during compaction or during replication. As far as I can tell, Compaction must always be triggered manually and Replication occurs only when there's more than one database server. The question is: if I won't run compaction and will use only single database instance for my documents, can I just use CouchDB's document versioning and expect it to work? What other problems I might run into? E.g. does not running compaction hurt the performance or consume significantly more disk space (than if I did handle the versioning manually)?

  Hello I'm creating a kind of massive network for users to register and login. I want to try using classes, but I've never used them (expect some mysql-wrappers etc). Could you provide some tips and sample-structure for my project? The idea is to simply have a index.php, which prints the whole page and does all the action. Index.php calls functions from classes inside other files. I need: user-class for checking if logged in and retrieving user-info different kind of "page"-classes for functions needed in those pages I'm not asking for full code, but just a start. I don't know, how to use public functions or anything like that. How to wrap these classes to work together? So no functions, just the structure! Martti Laine

• Drupal, Views, Exposed filter: custom default selected tags

  hi I'm using Drupal, Views with a exposed filter (using taxonomy). My customer wants to set from back-end the default selected tags (in order to pre-filter the views content). In the exposed filter settings, there is functionality. However, it doesn't work properly: when I click on "Select None" link (I'm using better_exposed_filter module) I expect none of the tags are selected, instead, the default configuration (default selected tags) are selected, so actually it doesn't work anymore. I hope it is clear. So, I was wondering if I can prepare a custom menu in which my user can check/uncheck the default selected tags in the view. thanks

• Higher speed options for executing very large (20 GB) .sql file in MySQL

  My firm was delivered a 20+ GB .sql file in reponse to a request for data from the gov't. I don't have many options for getting the data in a different format, so I need options for how to import it in a reasonable amount of time. I'm running it on a high end server (Win 2008 64bit, MySQL 5.1) using Navicat's batch execution tool. It's been running for 14 hours and shows no signs of being near completion. Does anyone know of any higher speed options for such a transaction? Or is this what I should expect given the large file size? Thanks

• Objective-C stringWithFormat misses an argument?

  When I run this code: - (NSString *)description{ return [NSString stringWithFormat:@"(FROG idle:%i animating:%i rect:%@ position:%@ tongue:%@)", self.idleTime, self.animating, NSStringFromCGRect(self.rect), NSStringFromCGPoint(self.position), tongue ]; } I get the following output: (FROG idle:0 animating:0 rect:(null) position:{{1,2}{3,4}} tongue:{5,6}) This is wrong because it seems to be skipping the rect format string and placing everything displaced by one. So idle and animating are what I expect, then rect is skipped, but the result from NSStringFromCGRect(self.rect) is placed into position, then the result for position is pushed to tongue, then tongue is not displayed at all. I'm at a loss.

  So I'm creating a plugin for Ruby on Rails to make implemented addresses including country, state, city, and zip_code for countries that can follow that paradigm a lot easier but that's beside the point expect for how the address model is associated. So starting with my address model. class Address < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :country has_one :state has_one :city has_one :zip_code end What's the difference between saying belongs_to and has_one Seems to be the same thing because both only require one model to declare ownership and foreign_key And it also seems that both are logical to say. an address belongs to an account and an account has one address Is this only semantics or is there are real difference

• IIS 7 problem which does not occur under apache

  I'm hosting a little site using a JavaScript to draw a simple graph. It involves one html index file, some css and some js files. It has all been working perfectly on two different apache servers, but when I set up IIS 7 the ajax calls fail. I get no java debug errors in firefox that I can work with, or any kind of error message at all. Without going into the code itself, does anyone have a similar experience with IIS? This is the first time I'm using IIS so I'm not quite sure what to expect to have trouble with. I'd love some input on this, if I have to delve into the code itself I'll make a new thread, I just thought I'd see if this could be a typical issue. Any help is appreciated!

  Hello, I am trying to work with an HTML.DropDownList in MVC and am not getting the expected return values. Here is my implementation for the selectList to bind to the drop down - IEnumerable<status> stat = _provider.GetAllStatuses(); Statuses = new SelectList(stat.ToList(), "id", "name", i.status.id); And here is my view - <%= Html.DropDownList("Status",Model.Statuses) %> I am getting an error when trying to run updatemodel in my controller. I then tried to individually set each object. It turns out that I am not getting a single int from the formvalue as I would expect to. Instead, I am getting a value like "5,10,2,3". I think this is coming from how I set up my selectlist, but I'm not exactly sure. Can anyone see an error in the way I am setting up this dd? • Dealing with Windows line-endings in Python

  I've got a 700MB XML file coming from a Windows provider. As one might expect, the line endings are '\r\n' (or ^M in vi). What is the most efficient way to deal with this situation aside from getting the supplier to send over '\n' :-) Use os.linesep Use rstrip() (requiring opening the file ... which seems crazy) Using Universal newline support is not standard on my Mac Snow Leopard - so isn't an option. I'm open to anything that requires Python 2.6+ but it needs to work on Snow Leopard and Ubuntu 9.10 with minimal external requirements. I don't mind a small performance penalty but I am looking for the standard best way to deal with this.

• Tips on how to deploy C++ code to work every where

  I'm not talking about making portable code. This is more a question of distribution. I have a medium-sized project. It has several dependencies on common libraries (eg openssl, zlib, etc). It compiles fine on my machine and now it's time to give it to the world. Essentially build engineering at its finest. I want to make installers for Windows, Linux, MacOSX, etc. I want to make a downloadable tar ball that will make the code work with a ./configure and a make (probably via autoconf). It would be icing on the cake to have a make option that would build the installers..maybe even cross-compile so a Windows installer could be built in Linux. What is the best strategy? Where can I expect to spend the most time? Should the prime focus be autoconf or are there other tools that can help?

• Reading and writing dates to the registry for trial version purposes.

  Hi all, Here's what I want to do, I want to store the date the first time the program is installed and also store a date when was the program was last run. I want the code to check to see if it was more than 30 days since the installation so I can turn off features. I also want to check if the system date is less than the last opened date and if so write the installed date to 1/1/1901 to prevent the program from running. Keeping in mind that this is not a consumer program but a business program I don't expect hackers to crack it, they may do but that is fine I simply want to give potential customers a reason to consider purchasing the program and the end of the trial will prompt this. 1: Does this sound reasonable? 2: How should I hide the fact this is a date so it's not easily changed?   Hi, I have made two folders, res/layout and res/layout-land The output i got If I start the application in portrait mode, it will always use the xml in layout folder if the application run in portrait mode. And will not use xml in layout-land if i change the device to landscape mode If it start in landscape mode it only use the xml in layout-land The xml is not switching when the orientation change What i expect was It should use the xml in layout folder while it is in portrait mode and use the xml in layout-land while in landscape mode In the Manifest file i have added android:configChanges="orientation" for the activity and <supports-screens android:resizeable="true" android:largeScreens="true" android:normalScreens="true" android:anyDensity="true" /> Did i missed any thing here? What changes i need to do here? Thank You

• NSFetchedResultsChangeInsert reported when only updates are taking place

  I have a class that acts as a NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate which is receiving messages to -(void)controller:didChangeObject:atIndexPath:forChangeType:newIndexPath: with change type NSFetchedResultsChangeInsert, but the actual object which is the subject has with certainty not been newly inserted, only updated. So I would expect to get a change message with type NSFetchedResultsChangeUpdate, should I not? If i check the value of isInserted on the object, it yields false (as expected from the logic in my program). So my question is, why is this reported as an insert when it is only a change/update? They only thing I can think of is that part of the changes that are taking place is that objects of another entity type are inserted with relationships to objects of the entity type that the NSFetchedResultsController is set up to fetch.

• HttpHandler with Flash file upload question

  I have a flash file uploader that allows uploading multiple files in one shot. Now on one click how many times will the hanlder is supposed to be called? I am seeing that the ProcessRequest() of the HttpHandler is getting called for each of the files I upload. If I upload 5 files, then the Process request gets called 5 times. This seems odd. I would expect the handler to be called just once where I will loop the Can anyone confirm this behavior or I am missing something?
