  I have a Visual Studio 2008 solution with two projects (a Word-Template project and a VB.Net console application for testing). Both projects reference a database project which opens a connection to an MS-Access 2007 database file and have references to System.Data.OleDb. • VBA compare and sort strings with quirky characters

  I am comparing text values from two DAO recordsets in MS Access. I sort on the text field, then go through both recordsets comparing the values from each. The sets are substantially different and while they're mostly alpha-numeric, spaces and symbols like hyphens and periods are very common. My program depends on predictable sorting and fool-proof comparing. But unfortunately, the sort will rank two values differently than the comparison function. StrComp is the obvious first choice: varResult = StrComp(Val_1, Val_2) RFA-300 14.9044 RFA300 14-2044 But for the two pairs above, StrComp returns a different value than one would expect based on the sort. Including vbTextCompare or vbBinaryCompare affects StrComp's result, but not so as to solve the problem. Note the values must always be compared as strings. Of course I make sure that "14-2044" and "14.9044" aren't evaluated as -2030 and ~15. That's not the cause of my problem. I learned API-based functions are more reliable for quirky texts, so I tried these: varResult = CompareString(LOCALE_SYSTEM_DEFAULT, _ SORT_STRINGSORT, strVal_2, -1, strVal_1, -1) varResult = CompareString(LOCALE_SYSTEM_DEFAULT, _ NORM_IGNOREWIDTH, strVal_2, -1, strVal_1, -1) The first one returns the opposite of StrComp. The second one returns the same as StrComp. But neither yields a result that is consistent with the sort order. (NORM_IGNOREWIDTH is probably not relevant, but I needed a place-holder substitute and it looked as good as any.) UPDATE: This is a complete rewrite of the original post, deleting all the info about why I really need this -- just take my word for it and enjoy the brevity.

• How do you get Microsoft Access 2007 32bit to show 64bit ODBC Drivers on Windows 7 64bit?

  I followed the advice here: Windows 7 64 bit odbc drivers for Ms Access Missing but it does not apply. I have Oracle drivers that are 64bit. If I click the ODBC mmc in my admin tools I can see the DSN. In my properties of the ODBC administrator, it appears to be pointing to the 64bit version of the ODBC administrator, which is good: %windir%\system32\odbcad32.exe If I use this version of the ODBC administrator, I can see the Oracle drivers and my DSN via the mmc. When I go to Microsoft Access 2007 (32bit), however, and click external data, ODBC, my 32bit ODBC administrator is opening, which does not have the driver. Can Access 2007 32bit use a 64bit driver to connect to a database (oracle in this case)? The driver works fine in all other applications, just not Access. How can I get Access to use the 64bit ODBC administrator? EDIT: For clarification, the problem is that Access is opening the 32bit version, the syswow64 version. I need it to open the native 64bit version, which it is not opening. The problem is that Microsoft Access keeps opening the 32bit version. I need it to open the 64bit version. The MMC of the ODBC administrator is pointing to the 64bit version, but Microsoft Access keeps opening the 32bit version. I need it to open the 64bit version. Thanks for help.

  I've a question about a SQL query.. I'm building a prototype webshop in ASP.NET Visual Studio. Now I'm looking for a solution to view my products. I've build a database in MS Access, it consists of multiple tables. The tables which are important for my question are: Product Productfoto Foto Below you'll see the relations between the tables For me it is important to get three datatypes: Product title, price and image. The product title, and the price are in the Product table. The images are in the Foto table. Because a product can have more than one picture, there is a N - M relation between them. So I've to split it up, I did it in the Productfoto table. So the connection between them is: product.artikelnummer -> productfoto.artikelnummer productfoto.foto_id -> foto.foto_id Then I can read the filename (in the database: foto.bestandnaam) I've created the first inner join, and tested it in Access, this works: SELECT titel, prijs, foto_id FROM Product INNER JOIN Productfoto ON product.artikelnummer = productfoto.artikelnummer But I need another INNER JOIN, how could I create that? I guess something like this (this one will give me an error) SELECT titel, prijs, bestandnaam FROM Product (( INNER JOIN Productfoto ON product.artikelnummer = productfoto.artikkelnummer ) INNER JOIN foto ON productfoto.foto_id = foto.foto_id) Can anyone help me?

• What is a good automated data import method for SQL Server?

  I'm in the process of porting some SQL Server 2005 databases to SQL Server 2008. One of these databases has an associated import application (Windows task) which uses SSIS with a DTS package to import a large dataset from an MS Access database nightly. In upgrading to SQL Server 2008, I discovered that I can't run the same console application which has been performing the imports due to the missing manageddts DLL in SQL Server 2008. It's several years old and in need of a rewrite for various reason, plus, I've been fairly unhappy with DTS in general. The original reason DTS was chosen was for speed (5 min import time compared to 30+ for ADO.NET). The format of the data to import is out of my control (the client likes Access). I would also like to be able to run the import from a machine completely separate from the server hosting SQL Server and preferably with minimal SQL features installed. Options I've considered: Creating an Access application to connect to both databases (SQL Server and Access) and perform the import (Ugh!) Revisiting ADO.NET to see if the original implementation was poorly written. Updated SSIS packages. What other technologies should I be considering for this job?

• Decompiling an old Program

  Hi. I have been asked to update a program written in 1987 in Delphi (I guess). I have no documentation about this program only a few side notes the programmer took that don't make too much sense to make. The cd show this files: Size | Filename - 19956 VP.DTA - 142300 VP.LEX - 404 VP.NDX - 126502 VP.RCS - 131016 VP.SCR - 150067 VP.XEL - 101791 vp.exe Is anyone of this files a database? If so can I access it's data? I tried several code decompilers but they show a message saying it was not a Win32 compatible application. The program run in MS-DOS. Is it possible to obtain the source code? Can I use this code in any way to build a new application? Thanks Update01: I can run the program in MSDOS. The program conjugate verbs and shows an example sentence where the verb can be used. The GUI is a little bit confusing and there is no help menu so I can't see all the capabilities of the program.

  I have a data processing system that generates very large reports on the data it processes. By "large" I mean that a "small" execution of this system produces about 30 MB of reporting data when dumped into a CSV file and a large dataset is about 130-150 MB (I'm sure someone out there has a bigger idea of "large" but that's not the point... ;) Excel has the ideal interface for the report consumers in the form of its Data Lists: users can filter and segment the data on-the-fly to see the specific details that they are interested in - they can also add notes and markup to the reports, create charts, graphs, etc... They know how to do all this and it's much easier to let them do it if we just give them the data. Excel was great for the small test datasets, but it cannot handle these large ones. Does anyone know of a tool that can provide a similar interface as Excel data lists, but that can handle much larger files? The next tool I tried was MS Access, and found that the Access file bloats hugely (30 MB input file leads to about 70 MB Access file, and when I open the file, run a report and close it the file's at 120-150 MB!), the import process is slow and very manual (currently, the CSV files are created by the same plsql script that runs the main process so there's next to no intervention on my part). I also tried an Access database with linked tables to the database tables that store the report data and that was many times slower (for some reason, sqlplus could query and generate the report file in a minute or soe while Access would take anywhere from 2-5 minutes for the same data) (If it helps, the data processing system is written in PL/SQL and runs on Oracle 10g.)

• "Too many indexes on table" error when creating relationships in Microsoft Access 2010.

  I have tblUsers which has a primary key of UserID. UserID is used as a foreign key in many tables. Within a table, it is used as a foreign key for multiple fields (e.g. ObserverID, RecorderID, CheckerID). I have successfully added relationships (with in the the MS Access 'Relationship' view), where I have table aliases to do the multiple relationships per table: *tblUser.UserID - 1 to many - tblResight.ObserverID *tblUser_1.UserID - 1 to many - tblResight.CheckerID After creating about 25 relationships with enforcement of referential integrity, when I try to add an additional one, I get the following error: "The operation failed. There are too many indexes on table 'tblUsers.' Delete some of the indexes on the table and try the operation again." I ran the code I found here and it returned that I have 6 indexes on tblUsers. I know there is a limit of 32 indexes per table. Am I using the relationship GUI wrong? Does access create an index for the enforcement of referential integrity any time I create a relationship (especially indexes that wouldn't turn up when I ran the script)? I'm kind of baffled, any help would be appreciated.

  I've been perusing some hep forums and some help books but cant seem to get my head wrapped around this. My task is to read data from two text files and then load that data into an existing MS Access 2007 database. So here is what i'm trying to do: Read data from first text file and for every line of data add data to a DataTable using CarID as my unique field. Read data from second text file and look for existing CarID in DataTable if exists update that row. If it doesnt exist add a new row. once im done push the contents of the DataTable to the database. Whats the best approach here: To First look for an existing record based on CarNum or to create a second table and then merge the two at the end? Finally when the DataTable is done being populated and im pushing it to the database i want to make sure that if records already exist with three primary fields (DriveDate, DCode, and CarNum) that they get updated with new fields and if it doesn't exist then those records get appended. Suppose there is Adam as author of works in all tables. So when i put Adam in search box it should result from all tables. I know this can be done by having single table or renaming fields names but that's not required. Please help.

On Form Load application will query that table for mode id. Using trigger on the tables, that must work according to that mode. The trigger will query mode value and doesn't work if access is closed or it's in read-only mode I know these are not the best solutions, that's why I'm asking for your advice. There's one more point. If the mode is changed to "access-is-closed" for a group of users, that group must not be able to query to DB starting that moment. With first solution I wrote it won't work, because user can be in application at that moment and no form load event will work. How can I do this? Is there any optimal solution? Thank you. • Batch Inserts And Prepared Query Error

  Ok, so I need to populate a MS Access database table with results from a MySQL query. That's not hard at all. I've got the program written to where it copies a template .mdb file to a temp name and opens it via odbc. No problem so far. I've noticed that Access does not support batch inserting (VALUES (foo, bar), (second, query), (third query)). So that means I need to execute one query per row (there are potentially hundreds of thousands of rows). Initial performance tests show a rate of around 900 inserts/sec into Access. With our largest data sets, that could mean execution times of minutes (Which isn't the end of the world, but obviously the faster the better). So, I tried testing a prepared statement. But I keep getting an error (Warning: odbc_execute() [function.odbc-execute]: SQL error: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]COUNT field incorrect , SQL state 07001 in SQLExecute in D:\....php on line 30). Here's the code I'm using (Line 30 is odbc_execute): $sql = 'INSERT INTO table ([field0], [field1], [field2], [field3], [field4], [field5]) VALUES (?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?)'; $stmt = odbc_prepare($conn, $sql); for ($i = 200001; $i < 300001; $i++) { $a = array($i, "Field1 $", "Field2 $i", "Field3 $i", "Field4 $i", $i); odbc_execute($stmt, $a); } So my question is two fold. First, is there any idea on why I'm getting that error (I've checked, and the number in the array matches the field list which matches the number of parameter ? markers)? And second, should I even bother with this or just use the straight INSERT statements? Like I said, time isn't critical, but if it's possible, I'd like to get that time as low as possible (Then again, I may be limited by disk throughput, since 900 operations/sec is high already)...   I am doing a lot of MS Excel interop i C# (Visual Studio 2012) using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel. It requires a lot of tiresome manual code to include Excel formulas, doing formatting of text and numbers, and making graphs. I would like it very much if any of you have some input on how I do the task better. I have been looking at Visual Studio Tools for Office, but I am uncertain on its functions. I get it is required to make Excel add-ins, but does it help doing Excel automation? I have desperately been trying to find information on working with Excel in Visual Studio 2012 using C#. I did found some good but short tutorials. However I really would like a book an the subject to learn the field more in depth regarding functionality and best practices. Searching Amazon with my limited knowlegde only gives me book on VSTO using older versions of Visual Studio. I would not like to use VBA. My applications use Excel mainly for visualizing compiled from different sources. I also to data processing where Excel is not required. Futhermore, I can write C# but not VB.

• How to install Ubiquity into a Live CD installation image?

  I am trying a create a small Ubuntu installation ISO image. I am using a tool called Ubuntu-Builder. To make the final ISO as small as possible, I have decided to use Ubuntu Mini Remix. It is a small Live CD without GUI. It does not come with any installer software like Ubiquity. I want to embed an installer software into the ISO image so that user can install it into harddisk. In Ubuntu-Builder, I have tried the following: Install LXDE Desktop, then install Ubiquity. But the final ISO boots into command line. Install OpenBox Desktop, then install Ubiquity. But the final ISO boots into command line. Do not install DE, directly install Ubiquity. But the final ISO still boots into command line. After booting up from ISO, I have checked the software in the OS. It seems that Ubiquity has been installed. But it didn't show up when I boot the ISO image. Anyone knows how to install Ubiquity into a Live CD ISO image? Anyone knows any text mode installer which can replace Ubiquity?

• Need help with testdisk output

  I had (note the past tense) an ubuntu 12.04 system with separate partitions for the base and /home directories. It started acting wonky, so I decided to do a reinstall with 12.10, intending just to do a reinstall to the base partition. After several seconds, I realize that the installer was repartitioning the drive and reinstalling, so I pulled the power cord. I'm now trying to recover as much as I can with testdisk, but it seems that testdisk is finding 100 unique partitions when I run it - they mostly tend to be HFS+ or solaris /home (which I think is just an ext4; I've never had solaris on the machine). I've pasted an abbreviated version of the testdisk output below (first ~100 lines, and then ~100 lines from the middle of the output). Is there a way to combine or recreate the partitions and then data recovery, or some other way maximize what I can recover (ideally as much of the file system as possible)? I really only care about what was in the /home directory - I'd rather not use photorec since I don't have another 2 TB HD lying around to recover to. • Mac OS needs Windows Live Writer &ndash; badly!

  I recently bought a new  Macbook Pro (the 13” one) to dive into a new world of programming challenges as well as to get a more powerful netbook than my Packard Bell Dot which I’ve been using since last year. I’ve had immense pleasure using the netbook format and their small size in meetings (taking notes with XMind), surfing “anywhere”, and, of course blogging with windows live writer. So far the Mac is holding up, it’s sleek, responsive, and I’ve even begun looking at coding in Objective C with it, but in one arena, it is severely lacking: Blogging software. There is nothing that even comes close to Live Writer for getting your blog posts out. The few blogger applications that do exist on mac both look and feel medieval in comparison, AND some even cost money! It looks like some mac users actually install a virtual machine on their mac to run Windows XP just so they can use WLW. I’m not that extreme; instead, I’m hoping that the WLW team will write it’s awesome application as a Silverlight 4 app. That way, it would run on Mac and Windows (as a desktop app). I wonder if it will ever happen though…   PS: The image is of me, took it with the built-in camera on the mac and emailed it to the windows PC that I am writing on :)

• MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

  We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. These entries will also contain stuff we had to remove from the actual presentations due to the time constraints. We managed to create recordings of two of the sessions, which will be uploaded to Channel 9 by Microsoft, afaik.   I will update this blog with information about exact locations when that is done. • Ubuntu 11.10 loads from live usb fine, but boots to black screen from harddrive. Why?

  A few days ago I had a hard drive failure, which was running Windows XP (32-bit) just fine. The second hard drive in my computer held a few unimportant files, so I formatted it in the Ubuntu setup and installed 11.10 without a hitch. I had been using it for about a week, but decided to install Windows 7 (64-bit) in order to utilize Networking with my home server (running Windows Server 2000). My system is 64-bit based, and thus I had no problems installing other than a basic RAM error that required me to remove my RAM down to a single stick. I played with the settings in Windows 7 for around an hour before I shut down. After reinstalling the RAM, Windows 7 would not boot. In this, I then assumed that something about my system was rejecting Win7 and I reinstalled Ubuntu. However, now Ubuntu (11.10) boots into black screen, and I've already attempted activating the grub menu with the shift key, and following steps listed here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen but nothing seems to work. I've reinstalled twice now, with the same result each time. Now, the very odd part about this whole scenario is that the USB I installed from has no problems booting as a live USB. This puzzles me greatly, because the hard drive boots straight to black screen and the live USB loads normally. At this point, my only theory is that the boot sector of the hard disk was somehow corrupted with Win7, and that Ubuntu was unable to completely write through. I used Darik's Boot n Nuke to wipe the drive, but was met with an error, this also puzzles me because the hard disk has no promblems reading or writing. Any suggestions/comments are appreciated. If you have a theory, I will be more than happy to oblige. Additional information: Intel Core2 Duo e6400 2.13GHz nVidia GeForce 7-series (7900 GS) 4 GB DDR2 333MHz (2x 2GB) Dell XPS 410 BIOS Revision 2.5.3

• Windows Defender Update KB915597 (Definition 1.135.415.0)? Killed My Live Discs

  Here's my problem, for those willing to read for about 2 minutes here's the entire story, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_update/bsod-after-windows-defender-update-kb915597/a4b5fca3-0274-47b4-97c4-61b34c4c4599, for those who want the short version here's what happened. After windows update automatically updated windows defender to kb915597, my computer starting getting bsods on shut down and start up and started experiencing problems withe the usb ports. So I decided to go to the microsoft answers site for help, I know that was probably my first mistake, so I followed their advice and they turned my computer into a large paper weight. Luckily I make physical backups of my c drive every few months and I have one from back in july, so I figured I'd boot up a ubuntu live disc, copy all my files from the past 2 months to a external drive and just copy the backup back to the c drive, that's where I ran into this problem. When I put in either a ubuntu or kubuntu disc, everything goes well, until it finishes the loading bar then when the OS would presumably start up, the computer resets, I've tried with ubuntu, kubuntu and gparted, and only gparted is able to get to the point where it starts up, but even then when I try to access the internet from it, the computer resets, and when I tried to copy the entire C drive partition to a blank external I wasn't able to. So I figured somehow maybe the C drive had something to do with it, so I unplugged the C drive so my computer was just a 2.8 ghz processor and 2 gigs of ram, should have had no problem starting a live disc but the problem still continues. After doing some googling around I've found whenever windows gets a update with the title KB915597 it's pretty much the kill switch for windows, I've tried contacting microsoft tech support and even managed to directly contact a software engineer but as soon as I mention KB915597 they all just blew me off. I hope anybody who reads this has any idea how to fix this, I'm going to attempt to install ubuntu or kubuntu to a external drive using the same computer and see what happens now.

• jQuery select change/click problem - change doesn't work in IE, click doesn't work in Chrome

  As the title says, I have a problem with binding to a change in a dropdown select list - it seems that "change" doesn't work with IE(7 or 8), so when I try the alternative and use a "click" event, it works in IE but doesn't work in Chrome! Am I missing something obvious here? • My PreferenceActivity does not show up, even though it is in my manifest file

  So I am modifying the Cube live wallpaper example. I have a class that extends PreferenceActivity, and I added the Activity in my manifest file. I keep getting ActivityNotFoundExceptions. • jQuery click event on image only fires once

  I created a view of thumbnails. When the user clicks, I want the real image to pop-up in a dialog. That works the first time, but once the jQuery 'click' fires on an thumbnail it never fires again unless I reload the entire page. I've tried rebinding the click events on the dialog close that that does not help. • Re-authentication required for registered-path links (to ASP.NET site) coming to IE from PowerPoint

  We're using URL routing based on Phil Haack's example, with config modifications based on MSDN Library article #CC668202, to provide "shareable" links for a ASP.NET forms site, and have run into a strange issue: For users attempting to open links from PowerPoint presentations, and who have IE set as their default browser, using one of these links forces (forms-based) re-authentication, even in the same browser instance with a live session. Info: We know the session is still alive. (Page returns information for the currently logged-in user; confirmed via debug watches) This doesn't happen with other browsers (FF, Chrome) or with other programs (Notepad++) as the URL source. We do not have a default path set, as this caused issues with root path handling at initial login. This primarily happens with PowerPoint, but will also happen in Word and OCS. On some machines, even after changing the default browser, Office apps will continue to use IE for these links, forcing this error. (A potential registry fix for this failed, but even if it had worked, we can't control default browser choice for our users.) We can't figure out if this is an Office oddity or is being caused by our decision to use app-level URL routing (rather than IIS rewriting). Has anyone else encountered this and found a solution?
