    vagrant@precise64:~$ sudo tasksel install lamp-server tasksel: aptitude failed (100) I'm hoping to get a LAMP server from a clean install of ubuntu. All the googles suggest tasksel, which going into a pretty ascii gui, downloads stuff, then dies with this message. I'm guessing I should try doing it via apt-get of the individual packages but seems a fair chance somebody else is going to search for this error message and want the right answer.

  • Ubuntu server 10.04 doesn't boot into installed Gnome desktop automatically

    I've installed Ubuntu server 10.04 and then installed Gnome desktop on top of it, because I am new to Linux and its command line, I need the GUI desktop to help me get around. However, the problem I got is that the server doesn't boot into the GUI desktop when powered on. It's booting into a shell like this: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enought?) - check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! /dev/mapper/cecdata-root does not exist. Dropping to a shell! BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) result of (cat /proc/cmdline) BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-2.6.32-28-server root=/dev/mapper/cecdata-root ro quiet Then I have type "exit" to exit the shell and then it boots into Gnome. Any idea what's wrong?     I've been using Webmin/virtualmin for years. In Webmin, I can edit Apache config files quite easily. For example, if a user wants to change the DocumentRoot because he/she wants to serve up a Ruby on Rails app using Phusion Passenger, I can do that in a few seconds using the Webmin GUI. /etc/apache/sites-available/samplesite.com.conf Is there something similar in WHM/cPanel? How can I edit the VirtualHost (and inside that, the Document Root), using WHM/cPanel?

  • Windows 7 search - sucky?

    Is there an alternative to trying to remember all the advanced search options? Like an actual GUI as we had for windows XP? As powerful as Windows Search apparently is, I cannot possibly remember all the options available. How is a mere mortal like my Dad supposed to understand and retain all this? Our department bought a rackmount server for the first unit, but I dont think this is adequate for applications that use graphics (correct me if I'm wrong - we bought a Dell R710). Could you tell me of a good rackmount workstation we could buy for our product? Also, would it be risky for us to build our own rackmount?

  • Error removing packages in Ubuntu using Synaptic

    I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and during my tries to free space I've removed several packages such as: openoffice, all editors, and some more packages such as players and printers drivers that I don't need and seem o.k to remove. However, after restart, the graphical interface doesn't load, I'm in the xserver, I have console but not gui. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which packages I should not remove or let me know of dependencies I need to consider when messing with packages? Thanks!

    CMD commands: setx SOMEVARIABLE "newpath" /M setx SOMEVARIABLE "%SOMEVARIABLE%;newpath2" /M Expected output on ECHO %SOMEVARIABLE%: newpath;newpath2 Actual output: %SOMEVARIABLE% Actual value stored (From System Properties-Environment Variables GUI): %SOMEVARIABLE%;newpath2 The only way i can get the expected output is, if i restart the command prompt every time i modify the environment variable. I'm using this command to automate environment variable value appending multiple times during the same process. Why doesn't environment variable get updated in cmd without restart? Is it possible to get the updated value of %SOMEVARIABLE% without restarting the command prompt?

  • Can I get Linux into 'Party/Kiosk-Mode' like status?

    I want to create a linux user account (in ubuntu or debian or whatever release is more suitable for this) which cannot do anything but just view a pre-determined web page. Kind of Kiosk style so that the user can observe what is going on from that web page but; cannot execute or write (and this blocking is preferably made also via GUI i.e. user cant minimize or close the browser, cant view any -start menus- )anything on machine. How can I do this?

    I've tried to find the basics in a Big IP manual but it seems to me the device is marketed towards GUI users only. Meanwhile I want to write a few scripts to automate tasks on the load balancer. I found a package for it, and issued: sudo tasksel install lamp-server sudo apt-get install redmine Which (I think almost) worked, but I've no idea how to test it, or even know if it's configured. How do I test it? I'm using 10.04 server so I don't have a local GUI.

  • Extracting one file from archive: 7-zip requires decompressing entire archive?

    I've noticed that when browsing an archive containing multiple files with 7-zip 9.20 Windows GUI, extracting one file for previewing takes significantly longer with .7z than .rar archives. With .7zips it also cycles through the filenames in the archive. To me it looks like decompressing the entire archive and keeping just one file. Is there a setting in 7-zip (current or beta/alpha versions) that allows RAR-like behavior?

  • Has anyone gotten Plan9 working in VirtualBox?

    More than anything, I'm just curious to know if this is even possible, since Plan 9 isn't in the list of GuestOSes on the VirtualBox website. However, if someone out there has got it working, my specific question: Whenever I try to boot Plan9, either as a live cd or to install inside of VirtualBox, once the GUI loads all I get is a screen of garbage. I think I've tried just about every graphics driver combination at startup - specifically, even 640x480x8 in VESA mode didn't work. Any suggestions as to how I can load it?
