    We have a Mac-mini running 10.5.8 which already acts as a fileserver for our simple Windows (mixed XP/Vista) workgroup. The Mac-mini is on the same workgroup and the files are shared via SMB, FTP, and AFP. Basic file-sharing is working, and has been for some time. We'd now like to add an additional directory/share which can be secured by a password so that only a small number on the network have access. Is this possible? I've already tried creating the additional folder on the mac system, adding it to the shared folders, and limiting it to a specific "shared user", however it's not possible to log-in from an XP machine. Adding a sub-directory to the currently working share and giving limiting it's access to the shared user doesn't work either.

  • One huge drive (network share) from many computers, with folder priority redundancy.

    Not sure if this exists, but I have a huge amount of data to store (about 5-50mb files) and as it is now, I have 5 computers, each with raid 5 providing about 6TB hard drive each. This is causing some problems with the software I am using (something home made) so I'm wondering, is there some software that I can install on all those computers that will mask it as one huge drive... Running windows on those computers, from Xp 64 bit to windows server 2008 I would also like to set a priority on each folder on the redundancy it has, some folders I can live without no online backup (I have a backup in a safe of that data) but some I need full online backup system if one hard drive fails. Something open source, as I try to use that as much as I can, but all ideas welcome.

    With a Gmail [email protected] address, you'll also receive email sent to [email protected] addresses, very handy for creating filters. I often [email protected] when signing up to websites, so if I end up getting lots of spam sent to that address, I know who to blame. But what's a good way to find a list of all username+anything@ addresses in my Gmail spam folder? I'd prefer to do this within the web client if possible. Next best is using external client such as Outlook or Opera mail but without having to download lots of mail if possible. I don't really want to download spam emails.

    I'm using Mail on Mac OS X with Gmail account. I can make a new mailbox folder, and mails can be dragged into there. But, the mails still remain in Inbox. It did not moved. It just copied. (well, it's 'label' feature of Gmail, I know.) This makes crazy. I can't separate mails for each purpose. Is there any way to make Mail application 'move' mails into my custom box (remove from Inbox)?

  • Is putting swapfile & temp folder in ramdisk a good idea in Windows 7 64 bit with lots of ram?

    I want my Windows to run as fast as possible. If I have 12GB ram in Windows 7 64bit, quad core cpu, and all apps fit in memory, will the swap file ever be used for anything? The question is about if its a good idea to put the swap file in a ram disk. Would a ram disk help in any way or will Windows intelligently use all the available memory for all its work? I am also thinking of putting the temp folder in a ram disk. I know ram disk is volatile memory and I don't care about its content in it if it gets lost.

    I need to sync some folders between two Win 7 machines. While they are connected to the same LAN, they can't see each-other over Windows Networking since sharing is disabled on both of them (security reasons). Do you know any sync app which can work over IP? The folder I need to sync has 500,000 files in it (80 GB in total), so the sync app should be pretty efficient. At the moment I copy the files from one machine to the other over FTP, but it takes forever, since a separate connection is opened for each file. Or maybe you know some app which can efficiently transfer a large number of files between two machines on the Internet?

    Hi I have a folder on my site which contains admin files and I've added basic auth following a little unwanted attention. This works fine however a couple of the admin functions won't work through basic auth as they handle file uploads and so I want to exclude these files from the auth. It shouldn't have any security implications as any rogue user wouldn't be able to access the pages that could create a session to use these functions. I am using the following basic code to exclude a file: <FilesMatch "(index.php\/myadminfolder\/myurl\/myaction/someotherstuff?)$"> Satisfy Any Order allow,deny Allow from all Deny from none </FilesMatch> The URL exclusion is not working. The URL to exclude is in the form: index.php/directory/subdirectory/action/uniqueid/blah What is the correct URL string to add to FilesMatch to exclude any files that start with the pattern of index.php/directory/subdirectory/action - regardless of what comes after action?   • Friend wants to return an iMac with Lion in it. How does he remove his personal info / do clean install?

    I have a Mac, but not Lion, and it seems like a lot has changed with Lion. He wants to return the computer. I told him doing a clean install will make it like new, but he says you can't download a bootable disk image from the appstore to do this. He doesn't want to torrent it because he thinks the store will know it's a ripped version. Is there a way for him to remove his Admin account so that none of his personal info remians on the machine?

    Hi, I currently have a POP server for email, which is delivered to a Thunderbird client. This Thunderbird client stores email locally into a hierarchy of subfolders containing both emails and subfolders. I now want to access this locally stored email from other clients. My first solution was to create an IMAP mailbox and move all the messages to the IMAP server. I wasn't able to do it because my IMAP server refused to create subfolders in folders already containing email. As the original hierarchy is quite complex, I can't modify it to try to get along with this limitation. Are there any Linux IMAP server that would accept having both messages and subfolders in a folder?

    I need to set up some sort of a script on my Vista machine, so that whenever a file is added to a particular folder, it automatically triggers a background process that operates on the file. (The background process is just a command-line utility that takes the file name as an argument, along with some other predefined options.) I'd like to do this using native Windows features, if possible, for performance and maintenance reasons. I've looked into using Task Scheduler, but after perusing the trigger system for a while, I haven't been able to make much sense of it, and I'm not even sure if it's capable of doing what I need.     I've just bought a MacBook Pro. Now I'm trying to build up a filesystem (just some path) that looks like my Ubuntu server. By doing so, I can reuse a lot of the scripts I've written before. I found that Mac OS X auto mounts home with map auto_home, which prevents me from even making a symbolic link. I managed to solve this problem from the solution here. It mentioned that Time Machine will auto-exclude the home folder. But I'm wondering why, this is confusing.

This is an internal application and, therefore, I am sure that the user will be using Windows 7. var ofd = new OpenFileDialog(); //This doesn't work ofd.InitialDirectory = Path.Combine(Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.Personal), "Downloads"); //This doesn't work either ofd.InitialDirectory = @"%USERPROFILE%\Downloads"; ofd.Filter = "Zip Files|*.zip"; ofd.ShowDialog(); txtFooBar.Text = ofd.FileName; I have tried the above so far and neither work. No Exception is thrown, it just doesn't set the initial directory to the downloads folder. Where am I going wrong? Thanks

    Hi Classes in my iPhone project are organised within folders on the filesystem, these correspond to groups (for each folder) in xcode. My problem is that there seems to be a particular class which classes in a particular group/folder cannot make reference to; the compiler complains of "Expected specifier-qualifier-list...". This happens on any class within this group, and also when I create a new class within this group and try and import the offending class like so: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> #import "MyClass.h" @interface TryingToImport : NSObject { MyClass *myClass; // Expected specifier-qualifier-list before 'MyClass' } Creating an identical class in any other group works OK. I understand this error message is usually due to cyclical import references, I have checked over and over and there don't seem to be any of these. I assume I have inadvertantly configured the offending group to be different to the others in some way but I can't figure out how. Help please!

The problem is, I want to deploy GeckoFX with my app and I don't know how to do it. The line of code I use to initialize GeckoFX is this: Skybound.Gecko.Xpcom.Initialize("C:\\xulrunner"); This assumes that the xulrunner folder is at C:\xulrunner. So, my questions is this: how do I add the xulrunner folder as a reference in my app so it's copied relative to where my app is (or at least in a place where my app can find it)?     Hi, I think I have something broken with the path that VS 2008 saves the backup files. Since few days, it creates a new "Visual Studio 2008" directory in the same folder that my .sln file exists. Then, after the time of the first auto-save expires, the backup files are being saved to this folder. I browsed the tools-options dialog but I haven't found a way to set the directory to by static: C:\documents and setings\\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Backup Files. Can anybody point me with the right solution to this problem (probably the correct registry entry - I guess) ? thanks

I have checked the FileSystemWatcher class, it only provides events for change/creation/delete/rename of the contents under the folder, which is not exactly what I want.   • Is there a script that can dynamically list the contents of a folder?

    I am redesigning my company's intranet site in Wordpress and one of the things they need is an archive of company memos. There are over 300 memos saved in one location and I'm wondering if there is a jQuery script that I can run that will read the contents of a local (network) folder and auto-generate a list of the contents of that folder dynamically (and generate those names as a hyperlink to that file, but if I can list the files, I can get include the hyperlink tag myself). I can always manually create the list of hyperlinks (would take a couple days to do so) but if I can generate it dynamically, whenever a new memo is added, the script will automatically include it making the site much easier to maintain. Is this at all possible? I know that this can probably be done in PHP, but the page I need to do this on is not a php page, it is one of the subpages that is created in wordpress that does not have a php file extension and can't run php code (that I know of) Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.
