• Best practices for coding date sensitive websites

  I'm creating a website for an event that is coming up. It has some functionality related to the event (such as "send me a reminder"), other stuff that takes place during the event, and finally some stuff that comes after the event. I need to start working on code that takes place during the event and after the event, plus some fixes for the current site (which is already live). What is the best way to approach this problem? Some solutions that occur to me are creating branches for each state and merging stuff as needed. Other one is hiding and showing functionality based on the date, i.e if (currentDate < eventDay) { reminder.show();}. Ideas?

• Any idea for a master thesis in software engineering

  Hi! I have to choose a thesis for my master degree. Time is limited to about 6 months. Do you have any idea? Any personal thesis that was successful? After searching around for some time now, i see the most famous topics are related to artificial intelligence, but i don't want something like that, because most of it would be just theory and boring. A lot of students present these kind of studies because those are the most difficult. I would prefer something that does not necessary include that mathematical complexity but which is an everyday-life topic, and gives concrete ideas, hypothesis, or solutions to some actual problems. Hope i gave my whole idea: i am looking for something that is different from the majority of what all students do, and able to impress the audience... :) I would really really appreciate any your suggestion, Thank you!

  Possible Duplicate: How closely can a game resemble another game without legal problems So suppose I'm currently developing a variant of a snakes game for the iPhone, and you decided to call it "snakes". First, in general, how would you find out if a name's been copyrighted or not? It's probably safe with "snakes" because it's such a common word, and that there's been so many games around (please correct me if I'm wrong), but with some people copyrighting the name "edge", it would be best to be a bit careful. Second, suppose I decided to go with some name that is guaranteed to be different (e.g EL SERPENTES DE LOS REYES), would gameplay be a point of contention on copyright issues? For example, the tetris game is sort of "copyrighted" at the apple app store, and there was a crackdown on anyone using the word "tris" or anything related to it. However, if there was a game with the gameplay of tetris (or loosely very similar), with the name "BLOXODEREX", can it be liable to copyright/DMCA issues?

• Bluetooth refuses to connect since update to Ubuntu Gnome 13.10

  I can no longer connect to my bluetooth speakers since since upgrading to Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 and then Gnome shell to 3.10, which never were a problem with Ubuntu Gnome 13.04. My bluetooth-dongle seems to working fine and I can even detect and add the speakers (Creative D100) but when I try to slide the button from off to on in the bluetooth settings it just slides back to off. The "bluetooth-B" in the upper right corner is also gone. I actually managed to connect after I added "Enable=Socket" under "[general]" /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf and the indicator on the speakers confirms the connection, but I cannot find the speakers in the audio settings even then. I've tried to solve this for several days, reading tons of other possibly related questions here on ask ubuntu and elsewhere but am unable to find a solution. Any ideas?

SteamUpdater: Error: Download failed: http error 407 Since I get a 407 error, it is related to Proxy Authentication. I have set up my http_proxy, ftp_proxy, https_proxy environment variables. • How to produce assets effectively on large Flash game projects?

  I have been working on Flash games professionally for two years now and somehow, having our artists producing assets the right way is one of our biggest challenge. More precisely, it is very hard to have them following any kind of structure and/or standards, nor taking into consideration performance. I would say also the most of our issues concerns UI and related animations. Our current workflow is (on a Facebook hidden object game) : Artists produce PSD and animate prototypes in Flash Artists re-organize their FLA files to be a bit more "programmer friendly" Programmers retouches assets until they have the right structure and export classes inside a SWC, from Flash Programmers try to improve performances, sometimes degrading the quality of game graphics Our main idea is to hire somebody dedicated to prepare assets for programmers but I am really looking forward to improving the pipeline. I was wondering if you guys have tips of any kind to improve this workflow, whether it be team organization, training, tools or tips with Flash. Any explanation on your asset pipeline is well appreciated too.

  I'm a computer science grad student at UCLA specializing in security and/or mobile devices. I'm looking for ideas for my M.S. Project. Something with research and experimenting or testing. I have a few in mind, just wondering if the community has some good thoughts. I'm currently working on a project that deals with offload security related operations to a grid-powered/cloud server to improve battery life on phones or tablets, aka Security-Aware software on mobile devices. I might be able to expand on this for my project... but I'm open to any new types of ideas. I have another idea about secure communications with a peer-2-peer ad-hoc network, but its seems a little dull. Hope this questions is not off topic for this StackExchange. • Long pause in pxe/preseed install

  I'm encountering a long pause during unattended (preseeded) install of precise server via pxe. The install eventually works, but appears to just sit there for 20 or 30 minutes after it authenticates the mirror. There is nothing in the logs during this time, even with full debug. • Chainload boot of Ubuntu installed on 32GB SD card from legacy Grub boot on USB

  I have Ubuntu installed on a 32 GB SD card (in the Storage Expansion slot on an Acer Aspire One) with Grub2 installed in the same partition. I boot into legacy Grub on a USB drive and would like to boot by chainloading Grub2 from Grub (kernel/initrd or symlink booting would also be fine), but I haven't figured out how to do this from legacy Grub CLI. Output from blkid for this partition is /dev/mmcblk0p1: LABEL="Ubuntu" UUID="7ceb9fa7-238c-4c5d-bb8e-2c655652ddec" TYPE='ext4" / fdisk -lu information Boot indicator ID 83. Related entries in grub.cfg: search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set-root 7ceb9fa7-238c-4c5d-bb8e-2c655652ddec linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.5.0-17-generic root=UUID=7ceb9fa7-238c-4c5d-bb8e-2c655652ddec... initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-17-generic I can't seem to replicate this in legacy Grub. Is there any way get Grub2 to chainload? How do I set root with UUID in legacy Grub? I prefer to boot from USB. Would Grub2 on USB (copying the grub.cfg generated during installation) be an option?

• What commands are needed to install Ubuntu Core?

  Ubuntu Core's wiki page page contains the instructions to install Ubuntu Core on a target media: Uncompress (do not unpack) rootfs Format target media: at least one partition should be ext2, ext3, or ext4 Unpack Ubuntu Core to ext{2,3,4} partition Install boot-loader Install Linux If the Linux kernel requires modules, add these to /lib/modules/$(uname -r) in the ext{2,3,4} file system Boot the target device Install any additional required software using apt-get But what are the specific commands to do the above? The things I'm specifically confused about are: Uncompressing and unpacking, what's the difference and how do I do them? What package should I install if I want the generic kernel provided in regular Ubuntu installation? I won't be installing any drivers or anything related to kernel other than what's provided in the repos, do I need to worry about manually adding kernel modules? PS I would like to request that all the commands used in the installation process be mentioned in the answer, for the benefit of ones who're completely unfamiliar and myself, should I ever forget.

• How do I ask google not to index certain parts of my page?

  I was searching for an old review on my site today and I noticed that Google is indexing the headline text in my latest article list on every page that it appears, obviously I guess. The problem is if I search for my Dragon's Lair review specifically to my site like this http://www.google.co.za/search?sugexp=chrome,mod=9&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=site%3Alazygamer.net+dragons+lair+review Then it returns a ton of pages that aren't appropriate as they aren't related to the review at all. The reason why I care is that I have a second Dragon's Lair review that was posted years ago and now I can't find it. Is there a way to hint to google that certain text isn't relevant to the actual content on the page? is it a terrible idea?

  I’ve been thinking that an eBook reader would be handy since I travel a lot.  I’m not really all that worried about taking novels and pleasure reading as much as taking along work related books and reference material. I haven’t really done a lot of research into the various options (Sony, Kindle, Nook, iPad, etc.) but am aware that not all content can be read on all readers even if it is in ePub format due to DRM. Anybody got a recommendation on which device/store combination offers the best selection of technical reference for a .Net developer with a particular interest in software process engineering? HELP!! • ifconfig : Command 'ifconfig' is available in '/sbin/ifconfig'

  My question is related to another open question. My echo $PATH gives me an output which is like /home/sahil/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p125/bin:/home/sahil/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p125@global/bin:/home/sahil/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p125/bin:/home/sahil/.rvm/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/home/sahil/.rvm/bin{}:/home/android-sdks/{}:/home/android-sdks/platform-tools/{}:/home/android-sdks/tools/{}:/home/sahil/android-sdks/tools{}:/home/sahil/android-sdks/tools:/home/sahil/android-sdks/platform-tools/ But running ifconfig gives me an output like Command 'ifconfig' is available in '/sbin/ifconfig' The command could not be located because '/sbin' is not included in the PATH environment variable. This is most likely caused by the lack of administrative privileges associated with your user account. ifconfig: command not found after running command like given in other question export PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games" it runs ifconfig but blocks other commands of ruby rails or rvm. Seeking help how to resolve this. Also why this happens?

• Resource Graphs in top panel?

  I'm running Gnome Classic in Ubuntu 11.10 and in previous versions of Ubuntu it was fairly easy to get resource graphs to appear in the top menu, but now the regular way of getting said graphs in the top menu bar don't work (right clicking on the top menu produces no result unless you click on an icon, eg sound, wifi, or battery indicators). Is it not possible to get resource graphs in the top menu bar in Gnome Classic on Ubuntu 11.10? If not Gnome Classic, is it possible in KDE? I've tried googling but the only results I'm getting are related to adding the panel, which I can't do because I can't right click on the top menu. Thanks in advance.

• New Replication, Optimizer and High Availability features in MySQL 5.6.5!

  As the Product Manager for the MySQL database it is always great to announce when the MySQL Engineering team delivers another great product release.  As a field DBA and developer it is even better when that release contains improvements and innovation that I know will help those currently using MySQL for apps that range from modest intranet sites to the most highly trafficked web sites on the web.  That said, it is my pleasure to take my hat off to MySQL Engineering for today's release of the MySQL 5.6.5 Development Milestone Release ("DMR"). The new highlighted features in MySQL 5.6.5 are discussed here: New Self-Healing Replication ClustersThe 5.6.5 DMR improves MySQL Replication by adding Global Transaction Ids and automated utilities for self-healing Replication clusters.  Prior to 5.6.5 this has been somewhat of a pain point for MySQL users with most developing custom solutions or looking to costly, complex third-party solutions for these capabilities.  With 5.6.5 these shackles are all but removed by a solution that is included with the GPL version of the database and supporting GPL tools.  You can learn all about the details of the great, problem solving Replication features in MySQL 5.6 in Mat Keep's Developer Zone article.  New Replication Administration and Failover UtilitiesAs mentioned above, the new Replication features, Global Transaction Ids specifically, are now supported by a set of automated GPL utilities that leverage the new GTIDs to provide administration and manual or auto failover to the most up to date slave (that is the default, but user configurable if needed) in the event of a master failure. The new utilities, along with links to Engineering related blogs, are discussed in detail in the DevZone Article noted above. Better Query Optimization and ThroughputThe MySQL Optimizer team continues to amaze with the latest round of improvements in 5.6.5. Along with much refactoring of the legacy code base, the Optimizer team has improved complex query optimization and throughput by adding these functional improvements: Subquery Optimizations - Subqueries are now included in the Optimizer path for runtime optimization.  Better throughput of nested queries enables application developers to simplify and consolidate multiple queries and result sets into a single unit or work. Optimizer now uses CURRENT_TIMESTAMP as default for DATETIME columns - For simplification, this eliminates the need for application developers to assign this value when a column of this type is blank by default. Optimizations for Range based queries - Optimizer now uses ready statistics vs Index based scans for queries with multiple range values. Optimizations for queries using filesort and ORDER BY.  Optimization criteria/decision on execution method is done now at optimization vs parsing stage. Print EXPLAIN in JSON format for hierarchical readability and Enterprise tool consumption. • High CPU load - Ubuntu 14.04

  I noticed that sometimes when browsing (with other processes in the background), I get very high CPU load for the browser process (over 100%) and the computer becomes really slow. I tried switching from Firefox (with just a few extensions) to Chromium, but same thing happens without me visiting graphics-intense sites, flash sites or anything like that. I also noticed python or node (when running "make") produce the same high CPU load from time to time so this is not necessarily browser-related. When I only have a browser open, it doesn't seem to happen and everything is fine in Windows 7. I switched from unity to gnome3 with no effect. Specs: lenovo w510 (4gb RAM, i7 q820 @ 1.73) + up to date Ubuntu 14.04 64bit. Printscreen: http://imgur.com/8MZJNKC Do you guys have any idea why this might happen?
