• Can I tell if the iPhone has a passcode?

  I'm developing an application that asks for a PIN when you start it. That's not great, but I can live with it. The problem is I'm being asked to ask for the PIN each time the phone wakes from sleep, too. Combined with the OS asking for its passcode, it's too much. Is there any legitimate way to detect if the phone has a passcode required for waking, so I can skip requiring a PIN in this case? I don't want to know the PIN and I don't actually care if it was locked (for instance, if the phone was asleep very briefly), I just want to know that the data is in some way "protected."

• UIActionSheet Cancel button keeps crashing my app

  I am really puzzeled by this one. I have set up two UIActionSheets in my application. They work perfectly fine until you use the cancel button in the UIActionSheets. • what are the limitations of mobile phones and web development

  simple really.. I am have been asked to do a mobile site (straight html + css (+ maybe jquery mobile later on)). The site will need to support the new type smart phone and the old type Nokia/(Symbian OS) with the web browser. Doubts and reservations aside as to anyone without a smart phone would bother visiting this site it still needs to support it. My first question is do older phones support PNG images and transparancey... But this has led me to a much broader question of what are some of the limitations of developing for older phone platforms is there anything that has caught mobile web devs out and had them scratching their head for an afternoon.. what are the limitations of mobile phones?

• Java ME Application running fine in Emulator but crashing when deployed to N70. Any way to identify

  I have developed a Java ME application for CLDC platform. It works fine when executed in an emulator. But when i deploy it to my N70 phone the application doesn't start at all in the phone. In my application there are some 14 classes and am creating an instance of each and putting them in the vector on application start. The classes just have one variable and 2 methods. Can this creating of lot of instances be the reason for its crashing? Is there any way I can find out the reason why the application is not able to start in the phone?

• Iphone does not recognize reneweed ad hoc provising profile

  I installed a new version of an app we are developing, and also a new ad hoc provisioning profile (the old one had expired). I removed the app and profile from the phone and from itunes. Added the new profile and app to itunes and synched. All seemed well- the new profile was on the phone and the new app too. But when trying to launch the app, I get an alert: "the application cannot be opened because the provisioning profile has expired". I removed and reinstalled. I rebooted the phone. Nothing helped. Any ideas? Thanks

• Load class based on SDK version

  Is there any way I can load a class based on what version of the OS the phone is running? For example: I made an app which requires 1.6+ Android. Is there a way for me to load one class or the other based on what OS the phone is running? I'm asking this specifically for contacts. The database was changed from 1.6 to 2.0 and the old version doesn't retrieve contacts on the new OS phone. I'd still like to keep my 1.6 requirement, but at the same time I'd like 2.0+ phones to access the contact part of the app. So can I make 2 APIs, somehow pack them with the app and decide on the fly which I choose to import?

• [as3] air for android - stage.setOrientation deprecated in AIR 2.5 so how do I do it now?

  as3 air for android using flash CS5 my problem: testing an AIR app on my droid 2 global (with slide out keyboard) using stage.addEventListener(StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE, handleOrientationChange); this is only fired when the i slide the keyboard out and not when I rotate the phone. I have tried this with the auto orientation on and off and with the aspect to portrait and landscape. actually the auto orientation option does not seem to make a difference on or off. I need the orientation to change when i rotate the phone. I know i can use the accelerometer to do this but the problem with that is when I click on a textField with the keyboard closed only the vertical keyboard pops up and i need the other one to pop up when holding the phone sideways.

The question is whether this structure is OK for ORM or I whether should add a processing layer that would create a more convenient structure every time something is inserted into the original DB. To simplify, here's what it kind of looks like. I have a person table: PersonId Name And I have a properties table: PersonId PropertyType PropertyValue So, for person John Doe... (1, 'John Doe') ...I could have three properties: (1, 'phone', '555-55-55'), (1, 'email', '[email protected]), (1, 'type', 'employee') By using ORM I would like to get a "person" object that would have properties "name", "phone", "email", "type". Can Propel do that? How efficient is it? Is it a better idea to create a table with columns "phone", "email", "type" and fill it automatically as new rows are inserted into the properties table?

• How to use the merge command

  Say I have a table called Employee (has ID, NAME, ADDRESS, and PHONE columns). (Not my real problem, but simplified to make the question easier.) If I call a sproc called UpdateEmployee and I pass in a @Name, @Address, @Phone and @ID. Can merge be used to easily check to see if the ID exists? If it does to update the name, address and phone? and if it does not to insert them? I see examples on the net, but they are huge and hairy. I would like a nice simple example if possible. (We recently upgraded to SQL 2008, so I am new to the merge command.)

• Developing for Windows 6.5

  Hi All I have just got a new company mobile and would like to begin developing apps for the HTC HD2 Mobile Phone. However, when I downloaded Microsoft Windows Phone Developer Tools, it pretty much said right at the end of installation that "Setup could not install correctly", and I clicked on "more", and it said "Silverlight 4.0 could not install correctly". So, the fact that Windows Phone Dev Tools couldn't install completely was because of this Silverlight 4 that couldn't install! Has anyone had the same problems, if so, how did you resolve this issue (if you did)? And... Is there another way to develop applications for mobile phones running the Windows Operating System other than XNA and Windows Dev Tools? Even better... Could it be done simply using the current Visual Studio Express Edition I already have? Thanks All

• Amazon SimpleDB - Is there a way to list all Attributes in a Domain?

  Hi, I'm using C# and the AWSSDK library form Amazon to test a few things in SimpleDB. All going well so far. However, I am trying to come up with a neat way of retrieving all Attributes that are applicable to a Domain. This is proving to be tricky without having to retrieve an Item, and obviously I can get the list of attributes then. But what if I have 100,000 Items in a Domain. Let's say the first 70,000 Items in a "Person" Domain have: FirstName, LastName, Address And then I hit a Item that has FirstName, LastName, Address, Phone And then I hit another Item around the 80,000 mark which has: FirstName, LastName, Email, Phone In the above example, for the Person Domain, how would I get a list that contains: FirstName, LastName, Address, Email, Phone ...without performing a ridiculous number of select statements?   I'm trying to write a app, where a webpage will have a button that when press will give the GPS location of the phone. I was going to have the android app create a thread that waits on a scket connection. The issue is that 1. Getting the ip addrs of the phone 2. I was told this would really drain the battery I was also thinking about having the phone send the gps location to a webserver like evrry 10 seconds. This sort of seams like a waste of bandwidth. Is there a good way to do this?

LINQ to Twitter: Nifty open source library on Codeplex that enables you to use LINQ syntax to query Twitter. Visual Studio 2010 Using Intellitrace in VS 2010: Chris Koenig has a nice 10 minute video that demonstrates how to use the new Intellitrace features of VS 2010 to enable DVR playback of your debug sessions. Make the VS 2010 IDE Colors look like VS 2008: Scott Hanselman has a nice blog post that covers the Visual Studio Color Theme Editor extension – which allows you to customize the VS 2010 IDE however you want. How to understand your code using Dependency Graphs, Sequence Diagrams, and the Architecture Explorer: Jennifer Marsman has a nice blog post describes how to take advantage of some of the new architecture features within VS 2010 to quickly analyze applications and legacy code-bases. XPath support in Silverlight 4 + XPathPad Tim Greenfield not only talks about XPath in SL4RC, but he has produced a tool, XPathPad, and provided the source... if you've used XPath, you either are a higher thinker than me(not a big stretch), or you need this :) Using a Service Locator to Work with MessageBoxes in an MVVM Application Josh Smith posted about a question that comes up a lot: showing a messagebox from a ViewModel object.
