• I am currently using Windows/Putty to develop on a UNIX server for web stuff.

  Is there any advantage to use a linux machine to develop instead of Windows? Everyone at work tells me to switch to Linux, since I'm developing hard-core on linux anyway. I manage 40 servers, and do everything from DB to data-backend to developing web services. I don't find anything wrong with Putty. I"m just too lazy to install another OS... What do you guys think?

  How do I have vim and a console in the same window? For example, I am splitting up the vim window into multiple windows (vertically or horizontally). What I want is to have the code window on the left side, and the interpreter or console or whatever on the right side, so I can easily switch between them. How does that work?   If my server is placed in PTP v2 enabled network which has grand master clock. And the switch is PTP aware. The server is W2008R2 (soon to be W2012). I also have PTP v2 software client. How does the master clock messages are getting on with Windows Server? Does it need special PTP-aware NIC or it will be treated as normal networking traffic and the software receives it through regular NIC no problem?

  I'm running Metasploit from Win 7 x64, and I've set up my Metasploitable 2 virtual machine on VMware Player. I can ping Metasploitable's IP address from the Metasploit console, however if I use nmap it says: Note: Host seems down. If it is really up, but blocking our ping probles, try -Pn I try it with the -Pn switch, it says Nmap done: 1 IP address (0 hosts up) scanned in 0.64 seconds I've disabled my Windows firewall and I'm running Metasploit as admin. Why can't I nmap my virtual machine?

  I have a laptop with an 80GB SSD and 500GB HDD. I currently have Windows installed on the SSD, and a 400GB data partition for Windows on the HDD. I set aside 100GB on the HDD to try out Ubuntu, and I'd like to make it my primary OS and switch it over to the (much) faster SSD. How could I go about getting my Ubuntu setup moved over to the SSD? I have a 120GB USB hard drive I can use if necessary for getting through it.

• Media disconnected Acer Aspire Win 7 Starter

  Problem setting up wireless connection on my new ACER Netbook using Win 7 Starter. Works fine with LAN cable from NETGEAR WGT624V3 router with updated firmware. The NETGEAR does not see the ACER, but does see my XP Laptop. I'm also running a wireless, BlueRay DVD. When I run getmac I get hardware not pesent, my mac address, Hardware not present. Is there a switch that needs to be set?

  I have a pool of XenServer hosts running the Free version of XenServer 5.6 FP1. I was wondering if I change the network backend to use Open vSwitch if I can specify ACLs on individual network VIFs without needing to use the DVS appliance (distributed virtual switch) which requires an Advanced License or higher. Basically I'm looking for a way to isolate VMs on my network so that if a user had root access on the command line they couldn't access other servers they should not be able to (without using a VLAN).

• Sending computer audio output to multiple devices

  I'm looking to take an audio signal from a computer (1/8"), or multiple computers if possible, and send its output to some sort of switch/audio box that would allow me to choose between different receiving devices - say between headphones and a receiver. I don't want to split the signal, and I don't want to send the signal to both at once, I want to be able to choose where the signal goes. Is there a box that will do this?
