We recently introduced Edbuntu to a team of school teachers. One of them tried installing Edubuntu in their school computers and have reported us this problem. I have no answer for the problem. File Transfer using RDP

I often use RDP to log into servers. A couple of issues I have had is that its a pain to get files onto the server from my PC at times, and, if there is something missing from the servers windows install, I can’t simply pop the DVD into remote server in some unknown location on the internet somewhere. The other day I was curious if RDP actually had anything…since it did support shared clipboards, so I went for a look through the options and low and behold, *hidden* away….. Select Options… Go to the “Local Resources” Tab, then where it has “Local devices and resources” it sneakily has a “More…” button. Which then displays a drive selection box. Select the drive you want …. Then on your server you will get….. Nice. That is useful.

Adding a Wine (.exe) file to open/play files in Thunar's 'Custom Actions'

What is the line parameter in Thunar's "custom actions" that would play a music directory in a Wine (.exe) program? I want to put Foobar2000 (and possibly other such applications) in Thunar's Custom Actions (actions that can be added/edited to be used in the context menu to play music folder's content). If I put no command parameter at the end of path, the player opens but there is no play and no files in the play list. If I add any of the listed parameters I get the error unknown commandline parameter: /path.to.file (Giving an answer to this question depends on knowing the CLI command that would have to be added into Thunar - so please look at this question too)

Why was Python's popularity so sudden? [closed]

Python first appeared in 1991, but it was somewhat unknown until 2004, if the TIOBE rankings quantify anything meaningful. What happened? What caused the interest in this 13 year old language to go through the roof? Is there a reason that Python wasn't considered a real competitor to Perl in its first decade of existence? Is there a reason that Python didn't continue in relative obscurity for another ten years? I personally think that Python is a very nice language, and I'm glad that I'm not the only one. But it doesn't have corporate backing or a killer feature that would explain a sudden rise to relevance. Does anyone know the story?

I can't open Ubuntu Software Center

I downloaded google chrome that was made for my computer from https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb. For some reason after I installed I can't open. Also in the corner where the time and other things are there's this red circle with a white dash in the middle of it. It says "An error occured, please run package manager from the right click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: 'Unknown Error:''(E:The package google-chrome-stable needs to be reinstalled,but I can't find an archive for it.)' This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies.

How do I get google to see keywords on a one page web application site?

I'm going to have to link to the web site to explain this, http://www.diagram.ly, it's a free service, so I hope this doesn't break advertising rules. Basically, it's a one page web application, I don't want to create a web site for it. Some background text loads and if JavaScript is enabled, the web application itself then loads. The problem is that Google only seems to be picking up the title of the page and the text on the footer, so the site only appear on Google search for very limited text (based on the title and meta description mostly). I was hoping that search engines would pick up on the background text and index that. The text is factual, not keyword stuffed. Yahoo seems to pick up the text, just not Google. Does anyone have any experience of how Google would view such a site and where I could put the text for a better result? Edit I should mention that Google Webmaster Tools lists the site keywords as "Component, diagramly, feed, mxgraph, share and twitter". Basically the footer and little else.

Unable to complete ubuntu installation

I am not a computer expert and have no programming experience. I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 from the website using the Windows installer onto an admittedly old Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop. The download seemed to be fine. When I try to startup the laptop and select Ubuntu I get a long series of messages starting: "error: couldn't read file [0.7392640 Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)" I have seen other entries on this messageboard with similar questions but to be honest, I can't follow the answers, which presume more knowledge than I have. I would be extremely grateful if anyone could suggest a solution.

Kernel Panic: Not booting after upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04

I upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04LTS. Upgrade went fine, even restarted couple of times. Then the next day while booting into Ubuntu, after the grub, it gave the error Kernel panic : not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0). I then booted into live CD and tried the following commands, based on other posts on this forum: sudo fdisk -l As the 8 was on /dev/sda1, sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev Now I got the message: mount: mount point /mnt/dev does not exist Then tried sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc Again got the message: mount point point /mnt/proc does not exist. then tried sudo chroot /mnt Got message: chroot: failed to run comman '/bin/bash': No such file or directory Now have no clue what to do next. Unable to boot into Ubuntu. Please help. Jitesh

REPLACENULL in SSIS 2012

While preparing my slides e demos for the forthcoming SQL Server Conference 2012 in Italy, I’ve come across a nice addition to DTS Expression language which I never noticed before and that seems unknown also to the blogosphere: REPLACENULL. REPLACENULL is the same of ISNULL in T-SQL. It’s *very* useful especially when loading a fact table of your BI solution when you need to replace unexisting reference to dimension with dummy values. Platform Builder: Disable the USB Driver Dialog

For a long time, Windows CE developers and users have wanted to disable the USB Driver Dialog that is displayed when an unknown USB device is plugged into the host controller. Of course the question is always why would you want to do such a thing? The simple answer is that there are USB devices that are needed, like printers, which expose multiple functions to the bus, like scanners and faxes, which no Windows CE driver exists to support. So the printer quietly loads a driver, but then the other functions cause a dialog to be shown. One solution is to create a USB Class driver that loads by default if no other driver has been loaded. This driver just accepts anything that it sees and then does nothing with it. Starting with the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 March QFE/update, the USB 2.0 driver has a registry value to disable the dialog: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\LoadClients] "DoNotPromptUser"=dword:0 Setting the DoNotPromptUser value to 1 disables the dialog. How can I start Busybox at boot time, from GRUB, or even before GRUB?

Most Busybox questions are related to the fact that users are dropped to a Busybox shell due to some unknown issues at boot time. This must make Busybox one of the most hated pieces of software. My problem is the opposite. I want to deliberately start Busybox at boot time either from GRUB, or even before GRUB. Is this possible? How can I do it? The purpose is to execute some commands before the boot sequence is reinitiated. So basically I want to execute some commands to make some hardware available to the bootloader.

I just started to learn Java using Thinking in Java book, and have some troubles using ant. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, and have openjdk 7 java installed. I also setup the CLASSPATH to be the code folder When I run ant in code folder, this is the output: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: JDK 1.4.1 or higher is required to run the examples in this book. The elders among you might remember a GNOME 1.4 usability study I presented at GUADEC in 2001, for example, which was primarily the handiwork of a previous incarnation of sxDesign… I pretty much just turned up at the end to steal the glory for the Desktop team. In your face, people I'm going to be working with now!2 1 A move I was first approached about making in about 2003, I think… who says I'm rubbish at making snap decisions? 2 I'm not really. They all left years ago.

How do you dive into large code bases?

What tools and techniques do you use for exploring and learning an unknown code base? I am thinking of tools like grep, ctags, unit-tests, functional test, class-diagram generators, call graphs, code metrics like sloccount and so on. I'd be interested in your experiences, the helpers you used or wrote yourself and the size of the codebase, with which you worked with. I realize, that this is also a process (happening over time) and that learning can mean "can give a ten minute intro" to "can refactor and shrink this to 30% of the size". Let's leave that open for now.

U1 music mp3 files not put into albums

Via the web page I can see that my files sync to U1 cloud servers. For the mp3 files, there seems to be a problem that several questions have already addressed but there does not seem to be a clear answer. If I use EasyTAG 2.1.6, I can see the ID3 tags on the local files and they seem to correctly define the artist, album title and track name. I expect it is not relevant, but I am using 10.04 with several different clients to rip the CDs. However, some mp3 files do not appear in the cloud at all and some others get assigned to Various Artist or Unknown artist. Does the music streaming (e.g. via Ipad) use the tags or the directory/file structure to assign the artist or album, and how quickly should it be expected to work? :-) Which version of ID3 tags does U1 music streaming work best with or prefer? thanks for any help David

Coolbits not working

I want to use coolbits to increase fan speed of my Fermi GPU. 280.13 driver installed. Ubuntu 11.10 I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf as follows, by pressing Alt+F2 and gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf I get Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" BoardName "GeForce GTX 470" Option "NoLogo" "True" Option "Coolbits" "4" EndSection Started getting these messages, Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap" So I did this, sudo aptitude install gtk2-engines-pixbuf terminal, a@z:~$ nvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GPUFanControlState=1 a@z:~$ nvidia-settings -q fans 1 Fan on z:0 [0] z:0[fan:0] (Fan 0) a@z:~$ nvidia-settings -a [fan:0]/GPUCurrentFanSpeed=80 ERROR: Error assigning value 80 to attribute 'GPUCurrentFanSpeed' (z:0[fan:0]) as specified in assignment '[fan:0]/GPUCurrentFanSpeed=80' (Unknown Error). Unity: Assigning a key to perform an action in the inspector

I am trying to write a simple piece of code in JavaScript where a button toggles the activation of a shield, by dragging a prefab with Resources.load("ActivateShieldPreFab") and destroying it again (Haven't implemented that yet). I wish to assign this button through the inspector, so I have created a string variable which appears as intended in the inspector. Though it doesn't seem to register the inspector input, even though I changed the value through the inspector. It only provides the error: "Input Key named: is unknown" When the button name is assigned within the code, there is no issues.
