• Easy text re-wrapping

  I'm looking for a tool that allows me to easily re-wrap text (i.e. remove line breaks, but not paragraph breaks from a text selection or a text field), and that works in my browser (Chrome) and on Windows. Bonus points for anything that works outside the browser, and that works in-place (i.e. that doesn't require copy-pasting the text through a separate window or using something like http://www.textfixer.com/tools/remove-line-breaks.php) Browser extensions, GreaseMonkey scripts or applications that also work on Linux and/or Mac (or even better, that are multi-platform) are all welcomed. • Google Chrome not loading web pages correctly unless multiple refreshes

  Webpages in Google Chrome do not load correctly from time to time. I can't reproduce it, it just happens. Some times it happens when I load the browser other times it happens when I am just browsing. Just now I went to five different web sites which 3 out of 5 of them did not load correctly. I have attached a photo of how Super User loaded the first time I loaded it. If I refreshed it it will load correctly. Facebook is bad like this. Some times Facebook will load correctly but some of there back end scripting may not load so the page may not refresh automatically. Not sure what is going on. I have tried other browsers (Firefox and Internet Explorer) and they seem to be working correctly. Chrome seems to be acting up only on this computer. All my computers are running Windows 8 and I have removed Chrome completely off this computer and re-installed. I even disabled all extensions and cleared all the caches. I even tried running Chrome without being logged in. Not sure what else to do at this point. An example of superuser.com not loading correctly: When I refresh the problem will go away until it happens again. Sometimes it takes two or three refreshes in order for it to correctly load.

• Upgrade Debian to unstable on VirtualBox: udev problem

  I'm running Debian stable on VirtualBox on Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate. It's been running great, but I needed some newer packages, so I put sid in my sources.list to upgrade to unstable (as I've done a dozen times on various Linux boxes over the years). When I upgraded, something went screwy and it asked me to run apt-get -f install to fix them, which gave this: (Reading database ... 77846 files and directories currently installed.) • PHP 5.3.5 Windows installer missing php_ldap.dll

  I'm working with Windows Server 2008, Apache 2.2. I'm using php-5.3.5-Win32-VC6-x86.msi as the installer, using the threadsafe version. I've gone through the install process four or five times just to make sure that I'm not missing anything ridiculous, but I don't think I am. The problem is that the php_ldap.dll extension simply doesn't seem to exist. It's not present in the installer interface (where the user is asked to choose which extensions to install), and it definitely doesn't appear in the ext/ directory after install. I found a lot of mentions of this issue for 5.3.3, including links to download the extension individually. Those links no longer exist, of course, and besides: they were for 5.3.3. I'd really rather use an extension that belongs with PHP 5.3.5. Anyone else encounter this problem? Any ideas as to what's going wrong? Anyone seen acknowledgement by the PHP folks that the file is indeed missing, and that it's an oversight? It's quite a frustration because the server I'm building has no purpose if I don't have PHP LDAP support. Cheers all, and thanks in advance for your assistance.

• Python coding with VLC player (quite a basic query I expect)

  I'm fairly new to the whole coding realm so my knowledge is fairly limited, and I can't seem to find any basic tutorials on how to use scripts with VLC player. More specifically, the reason I'm asking here is because I stumbled across a post on this site about playing random clips from random videos on VLC player automatically. This is the forum post: Playback random section from multiple videos changing every 5 minutes My situation is similar to this lovely gentleman's was, though he clearly knows a lot more about coding than I do. In short, I'd like to copy this coding into a file of some sort and apply it to VLC player myself. Only I'm not sure what file type I'd have to save it as (I have Python by the way, and I tried saving it as a .py file but I didn't know if it was correct or where to go from there). Additionally, I'm not sure how to get VLC to "read" the script, so to speak - is there a specific location the file needs to be, and do I run the script from another program or through VLC? I'll reiterate that I'm relatively new to this, so if anybody would be so kind as to post a quick list of steps on how to save/place the file and use it with VLC player I really would appreciate it! P.S. I'm not computer illiterate, I'm fine with most programs and I'd understand if you just said things like "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins" or "in VLC, select Tools Plugins and extensions", I just wouldn't catch on to anything about adding a line of coding that does something without being told exactly what to write! • VoIP setup for one external PSTN line

  I'm completely new to VoIP and the likes, and I'm trying to find information about what could be the best setup for this. I need 4 (maybe more in the future, but maximum 5 or 6) wireless extensions, connected to 1 PSTN line, and maybe 2 in the future. I've been trying to gather information about the gear needed but everything I find seems too much over-the-top (and extremely expensive). The main problem is that the physical place we are on doesn't have possibilities of having a decent internet connection, so using a external VoIP "virtual PBX" is not an option. Thing is, even if small, phone is critical to this organization. I currently have an analog DECT/GAP PBX which does what I need, however the PBX is very bad and the call quality is horrible, and that's why I want to change it. The requirements would be: 4 wireless terminals (routing cable is not an option), all of them ringing on incoming PSTN calls. Ability to do internal calls (4 separate offices) and ability to pass calls between terminals. The 4 terminals should be able to access the external PSTN line without dialing any special codes. Very important: terminals should be able to issue commands on the PSTN line to the external operator in the form *nn*nnnnnnnn# . Don't know wether this could face to be a problem, but I've had problems with analog PBX which would take any * as a PBX command and wouldn't allow terminals to send it to the external lines. Not so important, but would be nice to have: call waiting music Could anyone recommend such a setup? I need to be able to do this on a EXTREMELY LIMITED budget (that is: I don't have a limit, but all should get as much to zero as possible). I have enough spare powerful computers and a 300mbps wireless network which works just fine, so that's not to include in the budget. Don't really know if this is the best place to ask, but it's the most StackExchange-related site I've found to this subject.

• High latency issue for web service call from amazon aws ec2 to local server

  We have a legacy web application that is running in our data center on premises located in Houston. We have a developed a new .net 4 based web application in order to provide new features to customers. The new web application is hosted in amazon aws ec2 environment (N. Virginia region us-east-1b zone). In order to get seamlessly integrate with the legacy application the new web application makes web service calls to retrieve data. We are seeing an unusually high latency time in the order of 5+ seconds for these web service calls. The exact same web service call returns in less than a second on our local PCs (which makes sense given physical proximity to the actual server). The weird part is that we have developers in California who also have the same milliseconds response time. We are testing the web service response using third party tools such as SoapUI, Google Chrome extensions such as Advanced REST Client, Postman REST Client, etc. As if this wasnt weird enough, we have noticed the same low latency from certain other ec2 instances while testing which are in the same region and availability zone as well. If we experienced the high latency consistently from all the ec2 instances I could understand. But there is something else going on. Comparing the various stats and results between the low latency and high latency ec2 servers do not show any significant differences: ping (constant 40ms), tracert, winmtr, etc. We have instances that are in the VPC as well. So I tried both the public and private IP address of the web service host server and that didnt make a difference either for the above results. We need to resolve this latency issue as this is causing the resulting web pages to load very slowly (almost 15+ seconds which is simply unacceptable). The ec2 instances have Windows Server Datacenter 64 bit. Let me know if there is any other infor I can provide to help diagnose this.

• Windows 8, IIS8 how to make PHP imagick work

  I'm new to IIS server before IIS for 6 years I used Apache 2.X and with Apache imageMagick and its PHP module imagick worked just fine even with x64 version of PHP and Apache 2.4 and imageMagick. I tried to make imagick to work with IIS8 but it wont work. I always get the typical PHP startup warning in my log PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:\Program Files (x86)\iis express\PHP\v5.4\ext\php_imagick.dll' - %1 is not a valid Win32 application. in Unknown on line 0 And the next thing why is IIS loading php from IIS express folder if I have php in the program files? But actually I dont care until it works :) So what I did so far I unistalled imageMagick 6.7.X 64bit version and installed the latest x86 version, tested it in command line and it worked, than I looked up on net the latest imagick DLL which was I think the 3.1.0RC2 (founded here http://www.peewit.fr/imagick/) than I copied the dll to PHP's ext folder than edited php.ini and added the imagick to the dynamic extensions after that I restarted IIS and than nothing :( I got the error which I wrote earlier. Today I installed PEAR package Installer because I read somewhere that someone made it work with it but he also mentioned, that he needed to comply wincache too. Isn't there any easier solutions to make it work? Could someone maybe write me a step by step guide how to make this work.

I installed the same web development apps: Apache 2, PHP 5.3.2, Mysql 5, etc. All versions the same as my old laptop. A Mediawiki site (version 1.15) was copied over from my old system (via the Migration Assistant). Having a fresh Mysql setup, I dumped my old database and imported it on the new system. • Windows Virtual Machines will not run

  I'm trying to setup a few virtual machines to use for testing websites in the various old versions of IE. I had Microsoft Virtual PC working on an older machine using XP mode and 2 other VHD's from Microsoft that allowed me to test in IE6-IE8. I've recently gotten a new work machine and am trying to set up the VMs again for testing, however nothing seems to be working. Both the old and the new system run Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate with AMD processors. I downloaded Virtual PC & XP mode from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx and go through the installation process. XP mode is installed, but when I try to run it it goes through the initial setup process only to fail when it is almost complete with the error "Cannot Complete Setup". (After googling I see that this might be a conflict with my processor) I download other VHD's from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx in order to get the other versions of IE and try to set those up in Virtual PC as well. I click on them to start the machine and both Windows 7 with IE8 and Windows Vista with IE7 just hang at a black screen. I try to use Virtual Box instead, and I get Windows XP with IE6 running, but I have no internet connection in the VM. I try all different settings and try to google the correct settings but nothing seems to work. When I load the VM, XP shows that its found new hardware but it needs the drivers. One of these pieces of hardware is the network adapter, but I can't connect to the internet to download the driver in the guest OS. VirtualBox tells me I need to install extensions in order for things to function properly. I go through the installation process in the guest OS and restart the VM, however now XP is asking for validation and I can't access the VM. I try installing the other 2 OS (Vista & 7) but I get a BSOD right after the startup screen appears and the VM restarts itself. I'm getting so frustrated trying to make this work, I would really appreciate any assistance on getting the VMs up and running or any alternatives for testing websites in Internet Explorer.

• Docs for OpenSSH CA-based certificate based authentication

  OpenSSH 5.4 added a new method for certificate authentication (changes). * Add support for certificate authentication of users and hosts using a new, minimal OpenSSH certificate format (not X.509). Certificates contain a public key, identity information and some validity constraints and are signed with a standard SSH public key using ssh-keygen(1). CA keys may be marked as trusted in authorized_keys or via a TrustedUserCAKeys option in sshd_config(5) (for user authentication), or in known_hosts (for host authentication). Documentation for certificate support may be found in ssh-keygen(1), sshd(8) and ssh(1) and a description of the protocol extensions in PROTOCOL.certkeys. Is there any guides or documentation beyond what is mentioned in the ssh-keygen man-page? The man page covers how to generate certificate and use them, but it doesn't really seem to provide much information about the certificate authority setup. For example, can I sign the keys with an intermediate CA, and have the server trust the parent CA? This comment about the new feature seems to mean that I could setup my servers to trust the CA, then setup a method to sign keys, and then users would not have to publish their individual keys on the server. This also seems to support key expiration, which is great since getting rid of old/invalid keys is more difficult then it should be. But I am hoping to find some more documentation about describe the total configuration CA, SSH server, and SSH client settings needed to make this work.

  We have performed following steps as of now- Install TFS2010 10.0.30319.1 (RTM) on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise(app tier) SQL 2008 SP1 with Cumulative update 2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise(data tier) Reporting Service is installed on app tier. After this installation worked fine we installed SharePoint 2010 on app tier. After installation we followed http://blogs.msdn.com/b/team_foundation/archive/2010/03/06/configuring-sharepoint-server-2010-beta-for-dashboard-compatibility-with-tfs-2010-beta2-rc.aspx for configuration. We are not able to perform the last step described in the link as following error occured- TF249063: The following Web service is not available: http://apptier:31254/_vti_bin/TeamFoundationIntegrationService.asmx. This Web service is used for the Team Foundation Server Extensions for SharePoint Products. The underlying error is: The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found.. Verify that the following URL points to a valid SharePoint Web application and that the application is available: http://apptier:31254. If the URL is correct and the Web application is operating normally, verify that a firewall is not blocking access to the Web application. We have also noticed that Document Folder in Team project also have red x. Please help. Thanks upfront.

• OpenWrt vs DDWrt

  I have a TP-Link Wr1043ND router and I want to install one of these two firmwares: OpenWRT DD-WRT I read that I can install custom packages and do much more than I can with the original firmware. I would like to ask someone with experience in using both OpenWRT and DD-WRT which he would recommend and why. And to give a few reference points I'm interested in: reliability – network stability both on cable and wireless and on the usb drive performance – network speed, very important also usb drive speed configurability – the possibility to add extensions such as a torrent client, FTP, SSH, WWW and SVN server directly ease of use – the ease of installation and configuration of the router support/docs – how much info there is if you stumble upon a problem and you have to find some documentation, or if there's any free support (but that's a longshot) Of course I don't imagine that I will find the perfect firmware and that one is vastly superior over the other. Also if there's anyone out there who uses one of these firmwares on a TP-Link Wr1043ND, it would be great to get some feedback about the impact of the changes from the original firmware. P.S. I'm open also for Tomato if it's the better one.

• Can't login to phpMyAdmin on a WAMP server running Windows 2008

  I am setting up a new server. I have installed Apache 2.2.17, PHP 5.3.3, MySQL 5.1.53 and phpMyAdmin 3.3.8 running on a Windows 2008 (32 bit) OS. I have configured Apache and PHP so they appear to be working fine. I have created the standard test php page with the following code and everything appears to be working fine. <?php //index.php phpinfo(); ?> I also see the mySQL and mySQLi section in the above webpage, so it appears that that I have the proper extensions loaded for mySQL access. The problem that I am having centeres around myPHPAdmin. I have this installed and I can access to the login screen at http://localhost/pma I login using "root" and the password I have setup for root. After a delay of 30 seconds or so the web page goes to a blank screen, and the url is now http://localhost/pma/index.php?token= No error is ever displayed - however nothing usable is either. I have confirmed that mySQL is running by going to the command line and logging into mySQL from there. I have double checked my configuration but I am not having any luck getting this to work. I have also disabled the Windows firewall, but that did not change anything. I installed mySQL using the standard port 3306. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Redmine plug-in fails at rake db:migrate_plugins

  Hey, First post, so hope I'm in the right place. While trying to install the Redmine plug-in 'Wiki Extensions', I keep getting stuck when I try to run the "rake db:migrate_plugins RAILS_ENV=production" command. I am moving server and I'm in bit over my head. Haven't found anything on Google that has helped me much, though I might have missed something. • [Mac OS X] Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS is not recognized anymore

  I have used Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS for years now, alongside with Elgato EyeTV software. I am a happy and completely satisfied user! Since a couple of weeks the USB sitck stopped working on my MacPro1,1 (OS version 10.6.3): EyeTV does not see any device attached, and actually, the green led on the stick stays off. 1) it is not a USB port fault: I have unplugged any other USB/Firewire device and tried with different USB ports, to no avail (any other USB devices work as expected on any port) 2) I have completely uninstalled EyeTV software, including preferences and system daemons/extensions, rebooted and reinstalled the latest EyeTV. No way. 3) reset the PRAM. Nope. 4) checked the Apple System Profiler - USB: No device attached, The MacPro does not see it at all. ============= I need to say that: a) the device worked as a charm even with the latest OS 10.6.x (so it's not a OS upgrade cause) b) I have plugged the Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS to my MacBook5,1 where EyeTV is not installed and was never installed: The green led on the stick turns on, the growl bubble pops up, and the device is perfectly recognized by the system. • Xen PV packet loss

  I'm having some serious issues with packetloss with one of my servers. This server is a somewhat old (P4-era) machine running Debian Squeeze and Xen 4.0. There are two domUs running on it (both also Debian Squeeze), one gateway and a fileserver. Unfortunatly the processor has no virtualization extensions, therefore only PV can be used. While investigating why our network seems to be slower than it should I found some pretty bad packet loss (~25%). Same thing happens from anywhere in the network. The problem gets better for smaller bandwidths (0.047% for 5Mbit) and worse for higher (59% for 200Mbit) ones. I did increase the CPU-weight of the dom0, there is no swapping going on, and actual networking-hardware is not involved. I never expected Xen (or anything related) to drop packets, and I'm completly clueless what to try next.

• my X server doesn't load a module called "glx", but my video drivers seem to be installed

  I just got a new, very wide monitor (2560x1440) and there is no sense maximizing my applications. So I installed Compiz Config Settings Manager and enabled Grid. Nothing happened, the shortcuts don't move application windows. Went to System - Preferences - Appearance, the Visual effects tab. It at "disabled". When I try to set them to "normal" or "extra", a message box appears telling me that it's searching for video drivers, then disappears, and I get an error message "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I opened Xorg.0.log, and had errors there: (EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so (II) UnloadModule: "glx" (EE) Failed to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7) (II) LoadModule: "extmod" Going to Administration - System - Hardware drivers, it said that there are no available and/or installed hardware drivers. But apt-get said that it cannot install nvidia-glx-185, as it is already installed. Googling my error message suggested that I install and run something called envyng. This let me install the nvidia drivers again, and now I can see in the Hardware Drivers window that they are installed and active. But the error message in Xorg.0.log remains, and I still cannot enable the Compiz effects or use Grid. Now, I don't have enough Linux experience to understand if this is a single cause-effect-chain of problems, or three independent ones, but I'd appreciate help for any of them. I am running Ubuntu 9.10, the video card is a GeForce 7600GS.

• Do you known a reputable backup software that can capture ONLY file system structure + attributes, WITHOUT file content

  Is there, on Windows, a reputable backup software out there capable of capturing ONLY a file system's directory and file structure, along with each item's attributes, WITHOUT capturing the actual file content (all files should be zero-length in the backup). I thoroughly searched the web for a solution and wasn't able to find one. Scenario when this would be very useful: I have a large drive with a huge amount of files. If the drive dies, I don't care so much about the content in these files (I can always download this content again from the Internet at any time) but I do care HUGELY about the names of the files that were on it, possibly also about their MD5 hashes and other classic file attributes (especially created-date / modified-date). The functionality I need is present to an extent in "media"/file cataloging software (i.e. whereisit) and, to a lesser extent, in a Total Commander set of extensions (DiskDir, DiskDirExtended). The huge drawback with cataloging software is that it's not designed to store previous versions of each item (AFAIK) and, most importantly, it has very weak content backup capabilities. I managed to think of a hack but I hope there's some backup software out there that already has this capability and I just failed to find it, thus this question. The hack: RoboCopy could be used with /CREATE (CREATE directory tree and zero-length files only) or /COPY (what to COPY for files) without the D=Data flag, to clone a directory structure into one where all files are zero-length but have the desired attributes. Then I would backup the cloned directory structure with a reputable backup software. I would really love to avoid a hack like this one, if possible. Thanks, Bogdan

• httpd 2.2.15 + suPHP + suExec + php5 = permission and information ?

  Hi, i am currently playing around with suexec, suphp, php5 on my apache on slackware 13.1. Everything is installed and working properly but now i did like to got further into the directory permissions and at suphp settings and options available. initially i was planning to leave suphp disabled unless a virtualhost has it specified to be enabled but it does not seem to work, see sample: mod_php.conf which is included in my httpd.conf # # mod_php & mod_suPHP - PHP Hypertext Preprocessor module # # Load the PHP module: LoadModule php5_module lib/httpd/modules/libphp5.so # Load the suPHP module: LoadModule suphp_module lib/httpd/modules/mod_suphp.so <IfModule mod_php5.c> # Tell Apache to feed all *.php files through PHP. So my first question is, how could i possible make this setup work ? Leave suPHP disabled using php5 by default and if a virtualhost has suPHP enabled it will disable php5 and use suPHP. if any information is lacked here please let me know and i will update with any additional information you may need.
