  • Elasticsearch won't start anymore

    I restarted my elasticsearch instance 5 days ago and I haven't manage to start it since then. I get no output in the log file /var/log/elasticsearch/ nor does the elasticsearch binary print any information when running at using elasticsearch -f. I once manage to get this output. I've tried increasing the memory from 3gb to 10gb, but that didn't make any diffrence.   • 2nd Year College - Learning - Microsoft Server Products

    As the title says, I just finished my first year of college (majoring in Software Engineering). Fortunately my school likes Microsoft enough, and I can get pretty much anything I want that Microsoft sells. I also can get IBM Websphere and the like for free as well. Earlier this year, I set up an oldish computer (2.6 Pentium D, x64) to run ubuntu server headless. I'm predominately a Java developer, so Apache, Maven, Nexus, Sonar, SVN, etc made it onto the machine. It worked really well for personal and school projects, especially team projects (quick ramp up). Anyways, I started to pick up C# to complement my Java knowledge (don't judge me :P), and am interested in working with some of the associated Microsoft equivalents. The machine currently has the Ubuntu install, as well as Windows 7 Ultimate. I do all of my actual development work off my laptop, also running Windows 7 Ultimate. I was wondering what software you would recommend putting on the machine. I’m not actually serving anything off the machine itself, but in Ubuntu I had it doing integration tests with Hudson on every commit, and profiling my applications, etc, etc. The machine would be running headless, and I would remote into it. Here is what I am currently leaning towards / wondering about: Windows 7 Ultimate vs Windows Server 2008 (R2) (no one is really clear why I should go with one over the other) Windows Team Foundation Sharepoint (Never used it before, kind of meh about it) IBM Websphere or Glassfish (Some Java EE web server) SQL Server 2008 A DVCS In order to better control product conflicts / limit resource use, I’m wondering if I should install things into virtual machines (I can get VmWare or Microsoft Virtualization Products) I also plan on installing everything I had running under Linux (it’s almost entirely Java based development software, so it’ll run on both, only reason I went with ubuntu during the year was because the apache build seemed better). I’m primarily looking to become familiar with enterprise software development tools, as well as get something functional that will help my development process. (IE, I’ll still use project and assign tasks even though I might be the only one to assign tasks to, just to practice doing so). Is there any other software / configuration details I should explore? Opinions on my current list? I primarily use C#, Java, and PHP. I'm familiar with ruby, and python as well. Thanks!

    I am getting this error while trying to create a connection pool, on my Oracle database, Oracle 10gR2. java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1 ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified I am able to connect to the database over sqlplus & iSQLPlus client, but when I try to connect using this Java program, I get this error just when the connection pool is to be initialised and it does not initialise the connection pool. Can someone please help me resolving it?   • Snow Leopard doesn't repair permissions, despite showing / saying its fixed them?

    Sometime ago, I used carbon copy as I was replacing my hard drive in my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. Afterwards, on my new drive I had some permission problems. I've tried several times running a repair permissions / repair disk from disk util. It shows that there are problems and I think it says its correceted the problems. However the problems remain, what can I do to fix them ?     I am having trouble getting tomcat 7 to start up on my new VPS. I am really scratching my head since I have done this often. So I'm thinking it might be the VPS. I just got a new VPS from CINFU. After a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 32bit, I install openjdk-6-jdk, update JAVA_HOME to point to: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-i386 and JRE_HOME to: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-i386/jre But when I try to run: ./catalina.sh run it simply outputs: Using CATALINA_BASE: /opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.29 Using CATALINA_HOME: /opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.29 Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.29/temp Using JRE_HOME: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-i386 Using CLASSPATH: /opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.29/bin/bootstrap.jar:/opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.29/bin/tomcat-juli.jar and stops.     I have a legacy Java program which handles a special card printer by sending binary data to the LPT1 port (no printer driver is involved, the Java program creates the binary stream). The program was working correctly with the client's old computer. The Java program sent all the bytes to the printer and after sending the last byte the program was not blocked. It took an other minute to finish the card printing, but the user was able to continue the work with the program. After changing the client's computer (but not the printer, or the Java program), the program does not finish the task till the card is ready, it is blocked until the last second. It seems to me that LPT1 has a different behavior now than was before. Is it possible to change this in Windows? I've checked BIOS for parallel port settings: The parallel port is set to EPP+ECP (but also tried the other two options: Bidirectional, Output only). Maybe some kind of parallel port buffer is too small? How can I increase it?

Sometimes i need to terminate it by Ctrl+C when it hangs. In that case, ubuntu is not freeing the port. So in order to run the process, i have to restart the machine. I did sudo kill on both these.   • WebSphere hung threads, how can I track then down?

    We have an application running on WebSphere (unfortunately it is 6.1 which is no longer supported, it has not yet been migrated in production to a later version) which becomes entirely unresponsive because of hung threads. As far as I can tell we entirely exhaust one of the thread pools. I have activated hung thread detection and I get a core/thread dump when hung threads are detected. The server can run for several days without problems but has crashed twice this week. When load the core/thread dump in "IBM Thread and Monitor Dump Analyzer for Java", it tells me that there are a certain number of hung threads (this time it was 2, last time 11) and multiple (usually around 40) threads "waiting on condition" and some running threads. I believe one of the thread pool has around that size (50). Now what I see in there are threads waiting for locks, having locks or in wait. Most of them show a stack track which always ends like this: at java/lang/Object.wait(Native Method) at java/lang/Object.wait(Object.java:231) Now, how can I track this down to either a server configuration problem, application issue, WebSphere problem or something else? How is this supposed to help me track down the problem when almost everything in there refers to IBM code? I cannot ask IBM's help as 6.1 is now an unsupported version of WebSphere and while work has been done to make it work under WebSphere 7 we are not yet ready to switch to it in Production yet.
