• Places to start for system programmer transitioning to web programming

  So here's where I'm coming from: My background is in C#, C++, VB Script, php, javascript, PowerShell, T-SQL, and VB 6. I have some experience with python, and a brief introduction to Ruby On Rails. At work, we're transitioning to a web based UI in the next year or so, but in asp.net & SilverLight. I would like to, if possible, learn more open source web technologies on the side. And, hopefully, in a year and a half or so, I would like to transition to a more open source web technology position. I found that I do really like python, but I'm open to pretty much anything. And yes, I do know Linux (ubuntu and gentoo), as well. And, here's my question: What technologies, frameworks, IDEs, or systems should I be highly proficient in to become a prime candidate for a position doing web application development using non-Microsoft technologies?

• Linq to Entities performance within ASP.NET Development Server

  I've been evaluating linq to entities and linq to SQL for a project. Obviously each has its own advantages and disadvantages which have been discussed plenty of times here. However, One thing I am seeing with L2E is kind of odd. Using L2S, when using the ASP.NET Development Server, the performance is a little slower for my web service calls. I'm looking at 300ms vs. 250 ms. However, when using L2E, when using ASP.NET Dev Server, the performance is awful. I'm talking 1,250 ms vs. 220 ms. I know I should probably just use local IIS for development, but I'm curious if anyone else has seen this, or knows what is causing it.

  Consider this situation: There's a critical VB6 desktop application running on a production box. There is a possibility of installing a .NET application that queries the same DB that the VB6 application queries, which is an SQL Server 2000 DB. The VB6 application also depends on third-party ActiveX controls (registered .ocx files). The concern is - will the .NET Framework installation replace any files or break the VB6 runtime in any way. In other words, can we safely assume that an installation of the .NET Framework is completely independent of any previous VB6 installations and will not interfere with the running application?

  I'm developing report in RS that show top N customers based on some criteria. It also allows to select number of customers and period of time. Is it possible to do it by using report model? Thing that it seems to be difficult is how to pass parameters determined by user. Another thing that in my oppinion is very disappointing is that i cannot use SQL query as dataset query, because it uses odd and elaborate XML. Although report model items seem to map its fields to query or table fields. I m concerning using report models because i need to provide uniform data model (the same tables and fields) for more or less different database schemas. It would be very nice if somebody would explain what can be done with report models and what can not.

Receiving data works fine - select works in LINQ and shows data from database(sql server 2008). • Mapping one to one foreign key relationships in Entity Framework 4.0?

  Hello all, I'm sure I'm missing something very simple, but let's say I have two entities, Employee and EmployeeType. Employee type would contain values like 'Full time', 'Contractor', 'Intern', etc. An Employee entity would contain one, and only one EmployeeType value. So I am designing a new .edmx model using the Model-First approach and generating my actual sql server data schema from the model. I want to add an integer type foreign key id into my Employee entity, EmployeeTypeId, which will map to the primary key of the EmployeeType entity. So I've gone ahead and done that in my Employee entity. Where I'm stuck is how, though the Entity Framework designer, to enforce the 1:1 referential constraint on that EmployeeTypeId property? Or does the EF handle that automatically behind the scenes? thanks in advance, John

• How can a hacker put a file on my server root (apache, php, 1and1)

  Hi there, I have a site hosted on 1and1 and a couple of weeks ago I noticed a hacker had put a .php file on the server that when viewed in a browser exposed my DB schema, DB connection strings, FTP account (for file uploads using a form), etc, etc. Naturally I panicked and I wiped the server and reuploaded my files. Fortunatley I encrypt passwords using MD5 and I don't store things like credit card details, etc, etc. Now I checked my files and with all user input I use a clean function (htmlentities, sql_real_escape_string, etc, etc) that strips the input of any XSS or SQL injection. I have also made sure that the session key gets re-engineered when a user status changes (like they log into their account) to prevent session hijacking, my folder permissions are set to 755 and file permission are 644. Has anyone got any idea how this could have happened? Or if I'm missing something

• One to two relationship in Doctrine with YAML

  I'm working on my first Symfony project with Doctrine, and I've run into a hitch. I'm trying to express a game with two players. The relationship I want to have is PlayerOne and PlayerTwo each being keyed to an ID in the Users table. This is part of what I've got so far: Game: actAs: { Timestampable:- } columns: id: { type: integer, notnull: true, unique: true } startDate: { type: timestamp, notnull: true } playerOne: { type: integer, notnull: true } playerTwo: { type: integer, notnull: true } winner: { type: integer, notnull:true, default:0 } relations: User: { onUpdate: cascade, local: playerOne, foreign: id} User: { onUpdate: cascade, local: playerTwo, foreign: id} That doesn't work. It builds fine, but the SQL it generates only includes a constraint for playerTwo. I've tried a few other things: User: { onUpdate: cascade, local: [playerOne, playerTwo], foreign: id} Also: User: [{ onUpdate: cascade, local: playerOne, foreign: id}, { onUpdate: cascade, local: playerTwo, foreign: id}] Those last two throw errors when I try to build. Is there anyone out there who understands what I'm trying to do and can help me achieve it?

I want to create a stored procedure that will select all the elements in a table for a given run_id and delete all of them except for the 'newest' 5 entries (as noted by the stop_time column). • Export GridView to TXT, then upload file to server

  Basically what I want to do is export an array (or GridView) to a file called "getpathin.dat". That is easy, but the method I am using downloads the file to my computer, which is what I don't want. I want to write an array to either a PRE-EXISTING file that is on the server OR create a new file on the server in a folder, and this new file will contain either the array or the gridview, which I have stored in the array. i'll be doing this in... For Instance, The stored procedure should have three Input parameters... 1- Table Name 2- Column Name 3- Column Value If 1- Table Name = "EMP" 2- Column Name = "EMPID" 3- Column Value = "15" Then the output should be, select all the values of EMP where EMPID is 15 Once the values are selected for above condition, the stored procedure must return the script for inserting the selected values. • Classic ASP - How to convert string to UTF8 to USC2

  I have a problem where I am storing a UTF8 string in SQL Server as USC2, when I pull it out to display on a page with content-type set to UTF-8 it works fine. But I have a third party javascript component which when I pass it the string for the database it renders it as USC2. or not UTF8. Is there a way in ASP to convert this string to UTF-8 after reading it from the database to pass it to the third party component ( obfuscated ) . Hope this makes sense.

• Can a war file be deployed on any server?

  Please pardon me if this question is silly. Suppose I develop a j2ee web application using srping framework and a MS SQL Server database, using a Webspphere application server. I later create a war file for this application. Can I deploy this war file on a tomcat server without any change in code? Or my question is can this be hosted by web hosting which provides only Tomcat servers? If yes, is there any change in code required? If it cannot be deployed, can you please suggest me what to do, because I havent developed any application on a tomcat server. All the applications that I have developed have been on Websphere App Server using RAD.

  I'm building a public website which has its own domain name with pop/smtp mail services. I'm considering giving users the option to update their data via email - something similar to the functionality found in Flickr or Blogger where you email posts to a special email address. The email data is then processed and stored in the underlying database for the website. I'm using ASP.NET and SQL Server and using a shared hosting service.   I have a one-to-one relation where I use CascadeType.PERSIST. This has over time build up a huge amount of child records that has not been deleted, to such an extend that it is reflected in the performance. Now I wish to add some code that cleans up the database removing all the child records that are not referenced by a parent. At the moment we are talking 400K+ records, at I need to run the code on all customer installations just to be sure they do not run into the same problem. I think the best solution would be to run a named query (because we support two databases) that deletes the necessary records, and this is where I get into problems, because how should I write it in JPQL? The result I want can be defined like the following sql statement, which unfortunaltely does not run on MySQL.   Hello! I have two tables, one for job deadlines, one for describe a job. Each job can take a status and some statuses means the jobs' deadlines must be deleted from the other table. I can easily SELECT the jobs/deadlines that meets my criteria with a LEFT JOIN: SELECT * FROM `deadline` LEFT JOIN `job` ON deadline.job_id = job.job_id WHERE `status` = 'szamlazva' OR `status` = 'szamlazhato' OR `status` = 'fizetve' OR `status` = 'szallitva' OR `status` = 'storno' (status belongs to job table not deadline) But when i'd like to delete these rows from deadline, MySQL throws an error. • How to instantly termainate an un-supervised script on demand?

  I have a GUI which resembles an interpreter. It allows the user to write a script in Jython (implementation of Python in Java) and run it whenever he wants. Apart from that, I also wish to allow the user to instantly terminate the run whenever he wants. Thing is, I don't really know how to do it. The script is being run on a different Thread, but I don't know of any secure way to stop/interrupt/terminate a thread in the middle of its run, let alone not knowing what is being run by the thread/script (it could be a simple task or maybe some sort of a heavy SQL query against a DB, and a DB is something which requires careful resource handling). How can I instantly terminate such run on demand?

• Using LinqSql, stored procedure returns datatype image problem

  Hello! I´ve got a problem when using LINQ to execute a stored procedure and return its values. One of the column that the stored procedure returns is of datatype image and contains a pdf in binary form.(this because the database is deployed on sql server 2000, otherwised i would choose a blob) When including the stored procedure in my linq class its generates that my pdf columns is datatype int in the designer class. I´ve work around the problem and manually changed the datatype in representation of the stored procedure in the designer class. But when adding/removing items in the linq class the designer file re-generates and my changes are lost. Are there any better solution for my problem??

• Python MySQLdb LOAD LOCAL INFILE problems

  The problem is a simple one. When I execute the following I get different results depending on whether I run it from the MySQL console and from inside a Python Script using MySQLdb: LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE '/tmp/source.csv' INTO TABLE test FIELDS TERMINATED BY '|' IGNORE 1 LINES; Console gives the following results: Records: 35002 Deleted: 0 Skipped: 0 Warnings: 0 Python (via .info()) returns the following: Records: 34977 Deleted: 0 Skipped: 0 Warnings: 8 So in summary, same source file, same SQL request, different results. From the console I can 'SHOW WARNINGS' an get a better handle on which records are causing the problems and why but from Python I can't idenitify how to do this or more importantly what the cause of the problem could be. Any suggestions? MySQL Server '5.1.41-3ubuntu12.1' Python '2.6.5' Tables are MyISAM

• How can you query for an object using one of its properties' id

  I have two entities, say, House and People, where multiple people can live in one house. It's a unidirectional link where each Person has a field for which House they belong to, so the Person table has a column named house_id. I need to be able to return all the Person objects who belong to a certain House, but I only have the id of the house. This can be done like this: House house = houseDAO.findById(houseId); List people = session.createCriteria(Person.class).add(Restrictions.eq("house", house)).list(); But since I don't need the house, that's adding an unnecessary query. I've tried to do: session.createCriteria(Person.class).add(Restrictions.eq("house_id", houseId)).list(); But that doesn't work because house_id is not a property, it's a database column. I could just add an sql restriction, but is there a hibernate way of doing this?
