• When designing an event, is it a good idea to prevent listeners from being added twice?

  I am creating an event-based API where a user can subscribe to an event by adding listener objects (as is common in Java or C#). When the event is raised, all subscribed listeners are invoked with the event information. I initially decided to prevent adding an event listener more than once. If a listener is added that already exists in the listener collection, it is not added again. However, after thinking about it some more, it doesn't seem that most event-based structures actually prevent this. Was my initial instinct wrong? I'm not sure which way to go here. I guess I thought that preventing addition of an existing listener would help to avoid a common programming error. Then again, it could also hide a bug that would lead to code being run multiple times when it shouldn't.

• Using nsIZipWriter or other to compress a string as a string?

  I need to be able to take a javascript string, compress it using any fast and available means and get back a binary string/blob. Background: The extension I'm developing needs to send various large content to my server. It does this conveniently by dynamically creating a form, adding fields to the form and posting it. Some of these fields are just too big bandwidth wise for multiple use. I'd like to be able to compress them before adding them and then maybe base64'ing them if the characters cause a problem in the message. Any ideas? I could use nsiZipWriter with temporary files on disk but that is quite ugly and probably sluggish.

• How to add space after elements added via jQuery

  I am rendering a similar construct to the below with some server side code. The server side code inserts hard returns in between the project label and text fields. Not a big deal except the below jQuery code inserts the project label and text fields mashed together. var projectLabel = $('<label for="project">Project</label>'); var projectField = $('<input type="text" name="project" id="projectName" />'); projectLabel.insertBefore($(this)); projectField.insertBefore($(this)); Because of this discrepancy the elements rendered server side have a space between them while the ones rendered on the client do not. I've tried adding a nbsp; at the end of each line to no avail. Unfortunately, I have been unable to remove the hard returns outputted by the server side code. Further because of the space I can't fix this with CSS. What are my options for adding spacing via jQuery?

• Commenting system for CakePHP blog tutorial

  I'm building off the CakePHP tutorial for the blog engine by adding comments to each post. I am able to add comments by selecting the post that it should be attached to, via a select box. I would like to be able to click an "Add Comment" link within the post and have the association to the post formed programatically. I am unsure how I can pass the post_id to the add method within my comments_controller. The body of my add method is the auto-generated scaffold code. Is it as easy as adding a $postId argument to the add method and write this to the post_id in my comments model? This doesn't feel right though, since I would expect add to be called when my submit button is click on my comments add view. Thanks all.

Magento v. 1.7.0.0 If I try to change it's name in Mage_Checkout_Model_Cart - addProduct method in that way for example: if ($request->getMyParam()) { $product->setName($product->getName() . ' (' . $request->getMyParam() . ')'); } than I have message that I added product with MyParam but in cart really I have simple product name from catalog The same thing happent when I trying to do same thing in Mage_Sales_Model_Quote - addProductAdvanced method So where I must change this name to save this name in cart and then in order details too. Or maybe I can create some additional custom options on he fly when I adding to cart or saving product. Thnx for all who can help with this

• ASP.NET GridView - how to enable validation declaratively

  It it possible to enable validation in an ASP.NET GridView purely declaratively? What I've tried: A GridView bound to an ObjectDataSource with SelectMethod and UpdateMethod defined The GridView contains some ReadOnly BoundField columns and a TemplateField whose EditTemplate contains a TextBox and a RegularExpressionValidator that only allows numeric input in the TextBox. The GridView also contains a CommandField with ShowEditButton=true and CausesValidation=true. If I click on Edit, enter an invalid value, then click on Save, there is a PostBack, and an exception is thrown in the server (Input string was not in a correct format). • Can’t dup NilClass - how to trace to offender

  This exception occurs often and intermittently when in development mode, and appears to get triggered by model associations. Does There are lots of references found by google but none seem to help to trace the problem to an offending class. Does anyone have any insight into how to trace the occurrence of this exception to it's cause? I've seen the posts on adding "unloadable" but I'm not sure I buy it--unless there's a way to trace it somehow to its cause. I'm not in favor of indiscriminately adding such things to every class in hopes the problem might go away. Rails 2.3.5.

• asp.net mvc ignoreRoute with webservice

  Howdy, Im adding the filevistacontrol to my asp.net MVC web application. I have a media.aspx page that is ignored in the routing with routes.IgnoreRoute("media.aspx"); This works successfully and serves a standard webforms page. Upon adding the filevistacontrol, I can't seem to ignore any calls the control makes to it's webservice. Eg the following ignoreRoute still seems to get picked up by the MvcHandler. routes.IgnoreRoute("FileVistaControl/filevista.asmx/GetLanguageFile/"); The exception thrown is: 'The RouteData must contain an item named 'controller' with a non-empty string value' Thanks in advance.

• Parent/Child forms communication issue

  Hi, I am very new to Visual C++ programming, but I have to write simple program which needs to do two things: ( I am using MS Visual C++ ) main ( parent ) form should be displayed when program starts, and after clicking a button on it, second form should be shown. Second form ( child ) also has a button, but this one should ( after clicking, of course ) show current X,Y child form position but on ( important ): parent form. And this is where i got stuck. I can display child form with: a) adding #include "child.h" in parent form.h b) adding child ^child_form; in public: section and afterwards using: child_form = gcnew child(); child_form-Show(); I was googling for two days now and cannot find a way to get it the other way: click on a button on child_form and display it's coordinates on parent form on label-text :/ when i tried to add #include "child.h" in child_form I just got error saying: "there are to many include files..." I really need to get this done and I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance :)

• Automatically registering "commands" for a command line program in python

  I would like to develop a command-line program that can process and give "help" for subcommands. To be concrete, say I have a single script called "cgent" and I would like to have subcommands "abc", "def", and "xyz" execute and accept the rest of the sys.args for processing by optparse. cgent abc [options] cgent help abc .... All of this is straightforward if I hard-code the subcommand names. However, I would like to be able to continue to add subcommands by adding a class or module (?). This is similar to the idea that is used by web frameworks for adding controllers, for example. I have tried digging through pylons to see if I can recreate what is done there, but I have not unravelled the logic. Any suggestions on how to do this? Thanks, Sean

  I have a HTTP GET request that I am attempting to send. I tried adding the parameters to this request by first creating a BasicHttpParams object and adding the parameters to that object, then calling setParams( basicHttpParms ) on my HttpGet object. This method fails. But if I manually add my parameters to my URL (i.e. append '?param1=value1&param2=value2') it succeeds. I know I'm missing something here and any help would be greatly appreciated. • JPA GeneratedValue with GenerationType.TABLE does a big jump after jvm restart

  When I start my server and add an entry, the generated id will start with 1, 2, so on and so forth. After a restart, adding an entry would generate an id like 32,xxx. Another restart and adding of entry would generate an id like 65,xxx. I don't know why this is happening. Here's a snippet of the annotation I'm using for my id.   I'm planning on using CXF's rest implementation. I'm thinking of simply annotating my entity classes with jaxb annotations, such as @XmlRootElement, in order to create response objects. The benefit being avoidance of code duplication. As for the (client) request object, which will be used by a separate web app, I'm thinking of 'copying' the entity classes, removing the orm annotations, and adding jaxb annotations. Based on the above: Are there any dangers of creating request/response objects from entity classes? My entity classes contain relational properties, if I were to annotate them with @XmlRootElement, how can I stop the relational properties from being added (or considered apart of) to the response object? Is there a better/easier way to create request objects rather than copying the entity classes, removing/adding annotations?

  I have a tree structure in an sql table like so: CREATE TABLE containers ( container_id serial NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, parent integer REFERENCES containers (container_id)) Now i want to define an ordering between nodes with the same parent. I Have thought of adding a node_index column, to ORDER BY, but that seem suboptimal, since that involves modifying the index of a lot of nodes when modifying the stucture. That could include adding, removing, reordering or moving nodes from some subtree to another. Is there a sql datatype for an ordered sequence, or an efficient way to emulate one? Doesn't need to be fully standard sql, I just need a solution for mssql and hopefully postgresql EDIT To make it clear, the ordering is arbitrary. Actually, the user will be able to drag'n'drop tree nodes in the GUI

• Debug startup program behavior

  I want to Debug a program called Freecall in my Windows 7 Professional laptop. Now it shows as a Startup item in "System Configuration" console. I tried to uncheck it in the Startup item and restart, but it keeps on adding itself to HKCU\Software|Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. i think its the same for Yahoo messenger..these programs keep on adding to startup even after I manually deleted the entry from the registry. I want to debug and find out if after starting the executable, the program writes to the registry. How can I do that? Is there a way I can run the binary in Sandbox mode? Are there any VS tools for this?

  I am working on android geolocation application in that I have added marker for current location and want to add markers for other geopoints also. I have created objects of OverlayItem for other points and adding it to ItemizedOverlay like itemizedOverlay.addOverlay(overlayItem) and then adding it to mapOverlay.add(itemizedOverlay). For the current location geopoints getting from "Location" object and other points are hard-coded values.   I'm compiling a c++ program using g++ and ld. I have a .so library I want to be used during linking. However, a library of the same name exists in /usr/local/lib, and ld is choosing that library over the one I'm directly specifying. How can I fix this? For the examples below, my library file is /my/dir/libfoo.so.0. Things I've tried that don't work: my g++ command is "g++ -g -Wall -o my_binary -L/my/dir -lfoo bar.cpp" adding /my/dir to the beginning or end of my $PATH env variable adding /my/dir/libfoo.so.0 as an argument to g++ Thanks.

• Ordered Data Structure that allows to efficiently remove duplicate items

  I need a data structure that Must be ordered (adding elements a, b and c to an empty structure, will make them be at positions 0, 1 and 2). Allows to add repeated items. This is, I can have a list with a, b, c, a, b. Allows removing all ocurrences of a given item (if I do something like delete(1), it will delete all ocurrences of 1 in the structure). I can't really pick what the best data structure could be in here. I thought at first about something like a List(the problem is having an O(n) operation when removing items), but maybe I'm missing something? What about trees/heaps? Hashtables/maps? I'll have to assume I'll do as much adding as removing with this data structure. Thanks

• How can I implement log4j logging to an existing J2EE Struts web application?

  I have recently inherited a J2EE Struts web app that was written back in 2002. There is no logging in the application other than the odd System.out.println(). I have added log4j logging so that I can write out some info to the console, but I'm concerned on how best to approach this. Any suggestions, tips, best practices would be welcome as I don't want to spend too much time adding logging to every method or class (or trying to find what places where logging would be best - ie. bad code blocks/defects). My current approach is to just add some logging to the few classes that I have been looking at to understand the code, but are there a few key places where I can add logging to maximize my use of adding log4j?
