  • How to lowercase every element of a collection efficiently?

    - by Chris
Whats the most efficient way to lower case every element of a list or set? My idea for a List: final List<String> strings = new ArrayList<String>(); strings.add("HELLO"); strings.add("WORLD"); for(int i=0,l=strings.size();i<l;++i) { strings.add(strings.remove(0).toLowerCase()); } is there a better, faster way? How would this exmaple look like for a set? As there is currently no method for applying an operation to each element of a set (or list) can it be done without creating an additional temporary set? Something like this would be nice: Set<String> strings = new HashSet<String>(); strings.apply( function (element) { this.replace(element, element.toLowerCase();) } ); Thanks,

  • A way to edit content by altering one file?

    - by Chris
Hi, I have a contact css tab on my left side on my website, I have more then 30 pages and I don't wantto manually alter all those pages later when data had changed. Does anyone knows a sollution so I only have to alter 1 file to have all pages edited? Perhaps in javascript? The code below is for the tab <div class="slide-out-div"> <a class="handle" href="http://link-for-non-js-users">Content</a> <h3>Onze contact gegevens</h3> <p>Adres: van Ostadestraat 55<br /> Postcode: 8932 JZ<br /> Plaats: Leeuwarden<br /> Tel: 058 844 66 28<br /> Mob: 0629594595 <br /> E-mail: <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a><br /><br /> </p> <p>Mocht u vragen hebben dan kunt u gerust bij ons terecht voor meer informatie.</p>

  • In-order tree traversal

    - by Chris S
I have the following text from an academic course I took a while ago about in-order traversal (they also call it pancaking) of a binary tree (not BST): In-order tree traversal Draw a line around the outside of the tree. Start to the left of the root, and go around the outside of the tree, to end up to the right of the root. Stay as close to the tree as possible, but do not cross the tree. (Think of the tree — its branches and nodes — as a solid barrier.) The order of the nodes is the order in which this line passes underneath them. If you are unsure as to when you go “underneath” a node, remember that a node “to the left” always comes first. Here's the example used (slightly different tree from below) However when I do a search on google, I get a conflicting definition. For example the wikipedia example: Inorder traversal sequence: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I (leftchild, rootnode, right node) But according to (my understanding of) definition #1, this should be A, B, D, C, E, F, G, I, H Can anyone clarify which definition is correct? They might be both describing different traversal methods, but happen to be using the same name. I'm having trouble believing the peer-reviewed academic text is wrong, but can't be certain.

  • [Linux] domain socket "sendto" encounter "errno 111, connection refused"

    - by z.cHris
I am using domain socket to get values from another process, like A to get a value from B, It works well for months. But recently, A is failed during "sendto" message to B with "errno 111, connection refused" occasionally. I checked the B domain socket bind file, it is exists. I also do some tests in another machine, also works well. So, does anyone encounter this problem before? Can anyone have some clues what might be probably wrong in this scenario? Thanks very much.

  • Reading a C/C++ data structure in C# from a byte array

    - by Chris Miller
What would be the best way to fill a C# struct from a byte[] array where the data was from a C/C++ struct? The C struct would look something like this (my C is very rusty): typedef OldStuff { CHAR Name[8]; UInt32 User; CHAR Location[8]; UInt32 TimeStamp; UInt32 Sequence; CHAR Tracking[16]; CHAR Filler[12];} And would fill something like this: [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Explicit, Size = 56, Pack = 1)]public struct NewStuff{ [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.ByValTStr, SizeConst = 8)] [FieldOffset(0)] public string Name; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U4)] [FieldOffset(8)] public uint User; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.ByValTStr, SizeConst = 8)] [FieldOffset(12)] public string Location; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U4)] [FieldOffset(20)] public uint TimeStamp; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U4)] [FieldOffset(24)] public uint Sequence; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.ByValTStr, SizeConst = 16)] [FieldOffset(28)] public string Tracking;} What is best way to copy OldStuff to NewStuff, if OldStuff was passed as byte[] array? I'm currently doing something like the following, but it feels kind of clunky. GCHandle handle;NewStuff MyStuff;int BufferSize = Marshal.SizeOf(typeof(NewStuff));byte[] buff = new byte[BufferSize];Array.Copy(SomeByteArray, 0, buff, 0, BufferSize);handle = GCHandle.Alloc(buff, GCHandleType.Pinned);MyStuff = (NewStuff)Marshal.PtrToStructure(handle.AddrOfPinnedObject(), typeof(NewStuff));handle.Free(); Is there better way to accomplish this?

  • MS Word to Stylesheet

    - by Chris Johnson
Is there an easy way to automatically convert a bunch of MS Word documents to xslt stylesheets that can be displayed in the browser? What I have is a large collection of forms in Word format that have to be displayed in the browser, or sent to the user, with known fields populated from a data source, edited by a user and, finally, printed (including the original headers and footers). The data entered by the user will not need to be saved. I'm not sure if converting the documents to stylesheets is even feasible. Maybe someone has a better idea of how to achieve this? Installing Office on the server is not an option in my case.

  • Removing DOM event handlers in long-running browser session

    - by Chris Beck
I have a browser interface with a ul#contacts list on the left and div#contact property panel (email, phone) on the right. Click a contact in the list and my app makes an XHR request to get the contact property HTML fragment and update div#contact.innerHTML. Each contact fragment has an "Edit Contact" link. With JS, I progressively upgrade that link with an event listener that performs an XHR request to replace the static property panel with an in-place edit form. This can happen many times during a single browser session. How should I clean up my "Edit Contact" event listener? Do I need to remove it manually before the form overwrites the property panel? Or is the event listener cleaned up automatically when the contents of div#contact (and the node that I'm listening on) is overwritten? FWIW, I still consider IE6 to be part of my target market.

  • Is C++ Unmanaged?

    - by Chris Becke
Am I the only one bugged by the phrase "unmanaged c++"? I think the phrase is implicitly insulting, and is designed to be so. Stroustrup never wrote "The Design and Evolution of Unmanaged C++" and the not unmanaged C++ standards committee is not working on "UC++1x". Maybe I should disingeneously invent a suite of languages called "Faster" purely so I can refer to any language I want to implicitly denigrate with a "Slow" prefix. "Oh, youre using Slow CSharp? Shame!"

  • Convert image buffer to pdf with ImageMagick in C++

    - by Chris
Hi, I've downloaded the dll's for ImageMagick and am wondering if anybody knows of some example code to accomplish a simple task: I have generated an image in C++ and have the buffer in RGB format. I need to convert it to PDF format (without writing to a file) before sending it over a TCP socket. Is this doable with ImageMagick (or any other library)?

  • Reusing a NSString variable - does it cause a memory leak?

    - by Chris S
Coming from a .NET background I'm use to reusing string variables for storage, so is the code below likely to cause a memory leak? The code is targeting OS X on the iphone/itouch so no automatic GC. -(NSString*) stringExample { NSString *result = @"example"; result = [result stringByAppendingString:@" test"]; // where does "example" go? return result; } What confuses me is an NSStrings are immutable, but you can reuse an 'immutable' variable with no problem.

  • Selenium WebDriver works but SLOW (Java)

    - by Chris
Code: WebDriver driver = new FirefoxDriver(); driver.get("http://www.cnn.com"); File scrFile = ((TakesScreenshot)driver).getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE); FileUtils.copyFile(scrFile, new File("c:\\test\\screenshot.png")); I am using Selenium WebDriver to take a screenshot of webpages. It runs great. However, from the time I hit run in eclipse to the time the screenshot shows up in my local drive is 7-10 seconds. Most of the latency seems to be launching Firefox. How can I speed up this process? Is there a way that I can use an already opened Firefox browser to save on opening a new one? Is this code somehow heavy? Details- Tried on CentOS box and Win7 box both using eclipse. myspeedtest.net shows 22Mbps down and 1 Mbps up.

  • Accessing non-related entities in LinqToSql entity classes

    - by Chris Johnson
In LinqToSql, if I want to access a non-related entity in an entity partial class, how do I do this without creating a new DataContext? Here's the scenario: I have the tables Client, IssueType and ClientIssueType. A Client may specify a list of IssueTypes if they do not want to use the default IssueTypes. I have the default IssueTypes in the ClientIssueType table with a ClientId of null. In my Client partial I'd like to try to retrieve all IssueTypes, and if none are found, return all default IssueTypes. The only way I can see of accessing the IssueTypes with a null ClientId is by accessing the table through a new DataContext, which is problematic once I want to start assigning them to Issues. Where am I going wrong?

  • Perl, strings, floats, unit testing and regexps!

    - by Chris R
OK, as a preface this question potentially is 'stupider' than my normal level of question - however this problem has been annoying me for the last few days so I'll ask it anyway. I'll give a mock example of what my problem is so I can hope to generalize it to my current problem. #!/usr/bin/perl -w use strict; use Test::More 'no_plan'; my $fruit_string = 'Apples cost $1.50'; my ($fruit, $price) = $fruit_string =~ /(\w+)s cost \$(\d+\.\d+)/; # $price += 0; # Uncomment for Great Success is ($price, 1.50, 'Great Success'); Now when this is run I get the message # Failed test 'Great Success' # got: '1.50' # expected: '1.5' To make the test work - I either uncomment the commented line, or use is ($price, '1.50', 'Great Success'). Both options do not work for me - I'm testing a huge amount of nested data using Test::Deep and cmp_deeply. My question is, how can you extract a double from a regexp then use it immediately as a double - or if there is a better way altogether let me know - and feel free to tell me to take up gardening or something lol, learning Perl is hard.

  • W3 xHTML Validation Errors on jQuery code!

    - by Chris
I have some jQuery code that, without it in the document it passes validation fine, but with it in it causes errors. The code in question is here: $.ajax({ type: "GET", url: "data.xml", dataType: "xml", success: function(xml) { //Update error info errors = $(xml).find("Errors").find("*").filter(function () { return $(this).children().length === 0; }); if (errors.length == 0) { statuscontent = "<img src='/web/resources/graphics/accept.png' alt='' /> System OK"; } else { statuscontent = "<img src='/web/resources/graphics/exclamation.png' alt='' /> "+errors.length+" System error"+(errors.length>1?"s":""); } $("#top-bar-systemstatus a").html(statuscontent); //Update timestamp $("#top-bar-timestamp").html($(xml).find("Timestamp").text()); //Update storename $("#top-bar-storename").html("Store: "+$(xml).find("StoreName").text()); } }); There are loads of other jQuery code on the page which all works fine and causes no errors so I cannot quite understand what is wrong with this. The page isn't "live" so cannot provide a link to it unfortunately. The error it lists is document type does not allow element "img" here And the line of code it points to is here: statuscontent = "<img src='/web/resources/graphics/accept.png' alt='' /> System OK"; It also has an issue with the next assignment to statuscontent

  • How do I return the ancestors of an object with LINQ?

    - by Chris
I have a District class that looks like this: public class District { public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public District Parent { get; set; } public IEnumerable<District> Ancestors { get { /* what goes here? */ } } } I would like to be able to get a list of each District's ancestors. So if District "1.1.1" is a child of District "1.1", which is a child of District "1", getting Ancestors on District "1.1.1" would return a list that contains the District objects whose names are "1.1" and "1". Does this involve the yield return statement (I never totally understood that)? Can it be done in one line?

  • infix operation to postfix using stacks

    - by Chris De La O
We are writing a program that needs to convert an infix operation (4 5/3) to postfix (4 5 3 / ) using stacks. however my convert to postfix does not work as it doesnt not output the postFix array that is supposed to store the conversion from infix notation to postfix notation. here is the code for the convertToPostix fuction. //converts infix expression to postfix expression void ArithmeticExpression::convertToPostfix(char *const inFix, char *const postFix) { //create a stack2 object named cow Stack2<char> cow; cout<<postFix; char thing = '('; //push a left parenthesis onto the stack cow.push(thing); //append a right parenthesis to the end of inFix array strcat(inFix, ")"); int i = 0;//declare an int that will control posFix position //if the stack is not empty if (!cow.isEmpty()) { //loop to run until the last character in inFix array for (int x = 0; inFix[x]!= '\0'; x++ ) { //if the inFix element is a digit if (isdigit(inFix[x])) { postFix[i]=inFix[x];//it is assigned to the next element in postFix array i++;//move on to next element in postFix } //if the inFix element is a left parenthesis else if (inFix[x]=='(') { cow.push(inFix[x]);//push it unto the stack } //if the inFix element is an operator else if (isOperator(inFix[x])) { char oper2 = inFix[x];//char variable holds inFix operator if (isOperator(cow.stackTop()))//if the top node in the stack is an operator { while (isOperator(cow.stackTop()))//and while the top node in the stack is an operator { char oper1 = cow.stackTop();//char variable holds node operator if(precedence( oper1, oper2))//if the node operator has higher presedence than node operator { postFix[i] = cow.pop();//we pop such operator and insert it in postFix array's next element cow.push(inFix[x]);//and push inFix operator unto the stack i++;//move to the next element in posFix } } } //if the top node is not an operator //we push the current inFix operator unto the top of the stack else cow.push(inFix[x]); } //if the inFix element is a right parenthesis else if (inFix[x]==')') { //we pop everything in the stack and insert it in postFix //until we arrive at a left paranthesis while (cow.stackTop()!='(') { postFix[i] = cow.pop(); i++; } //we then pop and discard left parenthesis cow.pop(); } } postFix[i]='\0'; //print !!postFix array!! • Downloading a webpage in C# example

    - by Chris
I am trying to understand some example code on this web page: (http://www.csharp-station.com/HowTo/HttpWebFetch.aspx) that downloads a file from the internet. The piece of code quoted below goes through a loop getting chunks of data and saving them to a string until all the data has been downloaded. As I understand it, "count" contains the size of the downloaded chunk and the loop runs until count is 0 (an empty chunk of data is downloaded). My question is, isn't it possible that count could be 0 without the file being completely downloaded? Say if the network connection is interrupted, the stream may not have any data to read on a pass of the loop and count should be 0, ending the download prematurely. Or does ResStream.Read stop the program until it gets data? Is this the correct way to save a stream? int count = 0; do { // fill the buffer with data count = resStream.Read(buf, 0, buf.Length); // make sure we read some data if (count != 0) { // translate from bytes to ASCII text tempString = Encoding.ASCII.GetString(buf, 0, count); // continue building the string sb.Append(tempString); } } while (count 0); // any more data to read?

  • JNI String Corruption

    - by Chris Dennett
Hi everyone, I'm getting weird string corruption across JNI calls which is causing problems on the the Java side. Every so often, I'll get a corrupted string in the passed array, which sometimes has existing parts of the original non-corrupted string. The C++ code is supposed to set the first index of the array to the address, it's a nasty hack to get around method call limitations. Additionally, the application is multi-threaded. remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.1.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.4.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.6.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.2.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.9.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: {garbage here} java.lang.NullPointerException at kokuks.KKSAddress.<init>(KKSAddress.java:139) at kokuks.KKSAddress.createAddress(KKSAddress.java:48) at kokuks.KKSSocket._recvFrom(KKSSocket.java:963) at kokuks.scheduler.RecvOperation$1.execute(RecvOperation.java:144) at kokuks.scheduler.RecvOperation$1.execute(RecvOperation.java:1) at kokuks.KKSEvent.run(KKSEvent.java:58) at kokuks.KokuKS.handleJNIEventExpiry(KokuKS.java:872) at kokuks.KokuKS.handleJNIEventExpiry_fjni(KokuKS.java:880) at kokuks.KokuKS.runSimulator_jni(Native Method) at kokuks.KokuKS$1.run(KokuKS.java:773) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:717) remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.7.2:49153 The null pointer exception comes from trying to use the corrupt string. • Disable buttons on post back using jquery in .net app

    - by Chris Lively
I have a asp.net app that I want to disable the buttons as soon as they are clicked in order to prevent multiple submissions. I'd like to use jquery for this as the site already liberally uses it anyway. What I've tried is: $(document).ready(function () { $("#aspnetForm").submit(function () { $('input[type=submit]', $(this)).attr("disabled", "disabled"); }) }); The above will disable the button, and the page submits, but the asp.net button on click handler is never called. Simply removing the above and the buttons work as normal. Is there a better way?
