• Going from web browser to web request

  I am working on a program that automates tasks in a browser like entering text, clicking, etc and right now everything is working fine when using the Web Browser tool in Visual Studio 2010. What I'd like to know is how should I approach converting all of this so I can use send requests instead of the browser? I heard its a lot more efficient and a lot better if you are going to be using multi threading but I have so much code that already works now and am not sure how I should do this without scraping quite a bit of it.

  Using jQuery to create new DOM elements from text. Example: jQuery('<div><img src="/some_image.gif"></img></div>'); When this statement is executed, it causes the browser to request the file 'some_img.gif' from the server. Is there a way to execute this statement so that the resulting jQuery object can be used from DOM traversal, but not actually cause the browser to hit the server with requests for images and other referenced content? Example: var jquery_elememnts = jQuery('<div><img class="a_class" src="/some_image.gif"></img></div>'); var img_class = jquery_elememnts.find('img').attr('class'); The only idea I have now is to use regex to remove all of the 'src' tags from image elements and other things that will trigger the browser requests before using jQuery to evaluate the HTML. How can jQuery be used to evaluate HTML without triggering the browser to make requests to the server for referenced content inside the evaluated HTML? Thanks!

  How do I use the back and forward browser buttons to navigate my javascript/jQuery web application? I know I can do window.location.href = 'this_url#placeholder' and then perform the appropriate action. But when I do that, the browser scrolls to the element with that placeholder id (or to the top if there wasn't one). How do I get the browser to not scroll anywhere? I've seen this on other sites like facebook, what's the appropriate mechanism for this?

• How can I regain control over a "stuck" scroll bar?

  I normally have a lot of tabs open in the browser at one time, which normally doesn't cause any problems. Occasionally, though, the page will have fully rendered, the scroll bar is at the top of its track on the right, but placing the the mouse pointer on the scroll bar does not allow me to get control of it (and using the arrow at the bottom of the scroll bar doesn't work either). This seems to happen to me in both Firefox and Chrome, both latest versions. There is normally no load on the CPU, and while my memory usage can be high (especially with Chrome), I still usually have 25% left. I fear that this is one of those "for your own good" features, to prevent scrolling down a page that may still have elements loading and/or a stuck script, but I'm wondering whether or not there is a setting in Firefox or Chrome (or perhaps Windows in general) that will allow the scroll bar to be "released" even though the browser may be busy? It may be "2002" of me, but I wouldn't mind being able to scroll along gradually, even if the page hasn't had time to fully render all of the images, etc., yet. Does such an advanced setting exist "under the hood"?

• Javascript loading never completes on many sites

  I recently moved country and have found that on many websites the page never finishes loading. In some cases, no content is ever displayed, but the loading will never time out. Loading Developer Tools in Chrome shows me that it is the Javascript files which never load. For example, this BBC article will never load compatability.js, though will load all the other JS files perfectly. Google Maps often fails to finish loading, meaning it's impossible to make searches. There seems to be no pattern to which files will fail to load (i.e. they don't come from the same CDN). I have tried Chrome, Safari and Firefox on OSX 10.8, and Chrome on my girlfriend's OSX 10.7. I have similar issues on the iPad. In many cases, if I can go to the mobile version of the page that seems to load fine. I have run the browsers in private mode, disabled plugins, updated flash, cleared the cache, flushed the DNS cache - though it would seem that if this is happening on other devices, none of this would work anyway. Is this an ISP issue? And if so, why would it be limited to certain JS files and not all? JS files from the same domain work fine, so I'm not really sure what I should be looking for.

  I have a page that loads a lot of images, css and javascript. I've added a far future Expires header and set Cache-Control to public on these external dependencies so they should be cached. But every time I do a Post/Redirect/Get chrome tries to load these again. This behavior is very similar to reloading the page. I've added ETags and handle the If-None-Match header which helps a bit, but it still generates too many useless requests.   All I want is be able to use flash and javascript while using Tor (I don't intend to use it for torrents) Normally, using flash with Tor is not recommended because firefox plugins run outside of the sandbox, so the browser's proxy settings don't apply to them, and can reveal your real IP. But I think it should be possible to also redirect flash to the same socket as the browser, and block the other outgoing ports just in case. Any ideas on how to do this?

  I have a windows server 2008 with IIS7 with 4 websites. In DNS I have 4 different URLs which point to the IP of the server. I configured each web site with the site bindings: website1: hostname: url1, port: 80, IP-Adresse: the adress of the server website2: hostname: url2, port: 80, IP-Adresse: the adress of the server The result is, that from the client, I can browse with all the 4 URLs to the specified web sites and everything is fine. Then I changed in IIS the port of the websites, so that website1 now uses port 8080, website2 uses port 8081, and so on. Now I have to use the browser with the url and the portnumber (like URL:8080). Is there a possibility, to configured the websites with different portnumbers but not to use the portnumbers in the browser?

The problem is, the server's memory is only 512MB, so I can install larger desktop environment. I used to use XFCE and NoMachine NX, but they consume too much memory on that Ubuntu server.   I see that Google TV, inside Sony, has a Chrome browser. Is the same thing possible inside Vizio, or Samsung, or any other TV? The 42" Vizio is $499 at Costco, and the Sony with Google TV is $999. We're looking at a buch of these TV's that have build in Wi-Fi, to place around the office as Big Dashboards, and I don't want to have a computer attached to get web content on the screen. It's my understanding that both Samsung Apps, and Vizio Apps, use Yahoo Widgets as their ap engine. Anyone know of a way to get a full screen browser going, without attaching a computer? We thought of attaching an Apple TV, which can be jailbroken, but that is just another piece of equipment to lose, break, etc. Thank you!

• Self-hosted browser-based remote desktop script?

  I need a self-hosted browser based remote desktop script that will connect me from any PC to my work PC. I need to either host this script within my own dedicated hosting or on my work PC. The PC that I need to remote into is always the one PC (Win7) and the IP never changes, and I have access to the Router/Firewall within. I have tried many remote desktop services and applications - LogMeIn, Team Viewer, (Ultra/Tight) VNC, GoToMyPC and iTeleport Connect and even Windows Remote Desktop - and the web services (or ports) are blocked at whatever free wi-fi/hotel/coffee shop I am at. Note that I will need to be able to access this from any PC, so I won't be able to install any applications (or use any portable software) - hence my thinking that it will need to be browser based on a standard (not blocked) port. If I can set up a web based remote desktop application - really a homebrew LogMeIn - then I should solve my problem. What is the best option here?

  I've got an ubuntu AMI setup with ubuntu desktop installed and Chrome installed and set to boot on load (via the startup programmes menu within the ubuntu desktop) I've created an image of this AMI, but any time I launch a new instance running this, the Ubuntu GUI doesn't seem to load, until I SSH into the machine, enable VNC and then connect via Chicken VNC to the machine. At that point, the desktop appears to load + starts the browser. I really need the machine to boot and the browser to load without having to VNC into the machine.. Any help would be appreciated.

Wireshark and Fiddler both show this. How do i figure out how my browser has gotten brain-damage? Traffic to other sites in this stanza does properly go direct, as confirmed by Fiddler and Wireshark.

  Some time ago chromium-browser was supporting a so called "kiosk mode", which could start chromium in fullscreen and removed unnecessary titlebar and some other UI components. Right now it looks like it's no longer supported. After few updates the same script that I was using for launching kiosk mode is not behaving the same. I checked some sites and learned that recently they introduced a so called "application mode" (--app=http://mysite.com). All cool and neat, but application mode does no longer enforce fullscreen. How could I force chromium-browser to behave exactly as in previous kiosk mode?

When I click a link, the link is something like: a.com/something/blah.php Then moments later the url in the browser changes to something like: a.com/somethingelse/blahblah.php Is there a way with any browser (especially firefox) to have it ask me before redirecting?   Hi Is there any (ideally open source) software for Windows that can be used on a PC, to monitor the usage of internet from that PC? It would need to include both browser and non-browser sources (e.g. a service that sync's calendar to gmail). So any software on your PC that uses would need to be configured to point to this local internet monitoring software/proxy. The monitoring software/proxy then would be configured to point to the company proxy server (address, port & credentials). Things that come to mind that might be close but not really focused on solving this might be perhaps: Charles Proxy, Fiddler 2, SQUID? The idea would be it could give you a daily/weekly/monthly report of internet upload/download usage on a per program/process/service basis for the PC it is being run on. thanks
