  • How Can I Start an Incognito/Private Browsing Window from a Shortcut?

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    Sometimes you just want to pop the browser open for a quick web search without reloading all your saved tabs; read on as we show a fellow reader how to make a quick private-browsing shortcut. Dear How-To Geek, I came up with a solution to my problem, but I need your help implementing it. I typically have a ton of tabs open in my web browser and, when I need to free up system resources when gaming or using a resource intense application, I shut down the web browser. The problem arises when I find myself needing to do quick web search while the browser is shut down. I don’t want to open it up, load all the tabs, and waste the resources in doing so all for a quick Google search. The perfect solution, it would seem, is to open up one of Chrome’s Incognito windows: it loads separate, it won’t open up all the old tabs, and it’s perfect for a quick Google search. Is there a way to launch Chrome with a single Incognito window open without having to open the browser in the normal mode (and load the bazillion tabs I have sitting there)? Sincerely, Tab Crazy That’s a rather clever work around to your problem. Since you’ve already done the hard work of figuring out the solution you need, we’re more than happy to help you across the finish line. The magic you seek is available via what are known as “command line options” which allow you to add additional parameters and switches onto a command.   By appending the command the Chrome shortcut uses, we can easily tell it to launch in Incognito mode. (And, for other readers following along at home, we can do the same thing with other browsers like Firefox). First, let’s look at Chrome’s default shortcut: If you right click on it and select the properties menu, you’ll see where the shortcut points: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" If you run that shortcut, you’ll open up normal browsing mode in Chrome and your saved tabs will all load. What we need to do is use the command line switches available for Chrome and tell it that we want it to launch an Incognito window instead. Doing so is as simple as appending the end of the “Target” box’s command line entry with -incognito, like so: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" -incognito We’d also recommend changing the icon to it’s easy to tell the default Chrome shortcut apart from your new Incognito shortcut. When you’re done, make sure to hit OK/Apply at the button to save the changes. You can recreate the same private-browsing-shortcut effect with other major web browsers too. Repeat shortcut editing steps we highlighted above, but change out the -incognito with -private (for Firefox and Internet Explorer) and -newprivatetab (for Opera). With just a simple command line switch applied, you can now launch a lightweight single browser window for those quick web searches without having to stop your game and load up all your saved tabs. • IE and Google Chrome timeout on an IIS6 hosted SSL page that Firefox handles well.

    - by Thomas
    Ok, here's the scenario: Up until a few weeks ago, none of us noticed anything wrong with the corporate website. People were using it without complaint. Then, a client complained that a specific page on the site was timing out for him, and only when he committed a POST action on a form filled with data. I checked it out, and it timed out for me, too. But, it only timed out in Google Chrome and IE, not in Firefox. Additionally, the same page, on the same server, but served from a different domain name (one not under the protection of SSL, either) does not time out under any browser. To clarify: https://www.mysite.com/changes.php times out on POST, but the same with http works fine. That distinction (SSL vs. Non-SSL) seems to be important, as nothing else has changed. Our certificate is valid, and Firefox detects no errors thrown by the page. I've looked at the Request and Response headers from the page, and they all follow the correct formats. Then, after wandering through the site, I noticed a few other things. Both IE and Chrome will frequently time out on any page that is PHP-based. They never time out on static images or html files. I've looked at the site from a variety of different servers, my home and work workstations, and my netbook. Because of that, I've discounted a viral infection, as I highly doubt a virus is going to hit every one of the machines to which I have access in exactly the same manner. My setup is: Server: Win2k3, II6, PHP 5.2.9-1. Clients: IE7, IE8, Chrome (regular and dev channel): Frequent timeouts on PHP pages. Firefox 2, Firefox 3: No timeouts. Firebug shows no errors or even lengthy periods serving the pages. I've spent 2 days searching for any tech knowledge that I can find, and my search parameters are all too general. Everyone has problems loading SSL pages in IE and Chrome for a wide variety of reasons. The infrequent nature of the timeouts and the fact that there are no errors being reported anywhere is starting to drive me insane. Does anyone have any insight on a problem like this?

  • How do you import Firefox/Chrome bookmarks into Google Bookmarks?

    - by Rick
    How do you import Firefox/Chrome bookmarks into Google Bookmarks? It looks like Google Bookmarks has some wonderful features, but it doesn't let people import their existing bookmarks from their browsers be it Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer. There used to be workarounds for this, but no more: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2011/01/google-bookmarks-import-without-google.html Can anyone think of a good way to pull this off?

  • A MongoDB find() that matches when all $and conditions match the same sub-document?

    - by MichaelOryl
    If I have a set of MongoDB documents like the following, what can I do to get a find() result that only returns the families who have 2 pets who all like liver? Here is what I expected to work: db.delegation.find({pets:2, $and: [{'foods.liver': true}, {'foods.allLike': true}] }) Here is the document collection: { "_id" : ObjectId("5384888e380efca06276cf5e"), "family": "smiths", "pets": 2, "foods" : [ { "name" : "chicken", "allLike" : true, }, { "name" : "liver", "allLike" : false, } ] }, { "_id" : ObjectId("4384888e380efca06276cf50"), "family": "jones", "pets": 2, "foods" : [ { "name" : "chicken", "allLike" : true, }, { "name" : "liver", "allLike" : true, } ] } What I end up getting is both families because they both have at least one food marked as true for allLike. It seems that the two conditions in the $and are true if any foods sub-document matches, but what I want is the two conditions to match for the conditions as a pair. As is, I get the Jones family back (as I want) but also Smith (which I don't). Smith gets returned because the chicken sub-doc has allLike set to true and the liver sub-doc has a name of 'liver'. The conditions are matching across separate foods sub-docs. I want them to match as a pair on a foods document. This code is not the real use case, obviously. I have one, but I've simplified it to protect the innocent...

  • Can we save image slices in sub folders in Photoshop?

    - by bobo
    I am using Photoshop CS5, by default, Photoshop saves image slices in a folder named images. This is fine but there are lots of images, saving them all in a single folder becomes quite messy. What I would like to do in Photoshop is, it allows me to specify which sub-folder a slice should go under the default images folder. For example, a website template PSD file, I would like to save image slices that appear in the header under images\header\. Maybe for the images in the footer, they should go images\footer\. Of course, I can group them manually after the slices are extracted. If possible, I would like to define them in Photoshop, so that every time the image slices are extracted, they each go to the specified sub-folder automatically. Is this possible in Photoshop?

  • Need help setting up a truststore's chain of authority (in Tomcat)

    - by codeinfo
    Lead in ... I'm not an expert, by far, in application security via SSL, but am trying to establish a test environment that includes all possible scenarios we may encounter in production. For this I have a tree of Certificate Authorities (CAs) that are the issuers of an assortment of test client certificates, and node/server certificates (complex test environment representing the various published web services and other applications we integrate with). The structure of these CAs are as follows: Root CA, which has signed/issued Sub CA1, Sub CA2, and Sub CA3. These subs have then signed/issued all certificates of those various nodes and clients in the environment. Now for the question .... In my application's truststore I would like to trust everything signed by Sub CA1, and Sub CA2, but not Sub CA3 (untrusted). Does this mean my truststore should (1) ONLY include Sub CA1 and Sub CA2, or (2) should it include Root CA, Sub CA1, and Sub CA2? I don't know what is the proper way to represent this trust chain in a truststore. In the future I would also like to add a Sub CA4 (also signed/issued by the Root CA), but add that to a Certificate Revocation List (CRL) for testing purposes. Ahead of time, thank you for any help concerning this. It's greatly appreciated.

  • Developing Browser plugins. Spcially for chrome and firefox, what is the future?

    - by MobileDev123
    I am interested to learn developing some plug ins for chrome and Firefox browsers as hobby projects. However I know nothing about it, and I don't know if it is valuable for professional experience or not. Do you know anybody who's developing this kind of plug ins professionally? In case I can develop any plug in, does it have any significance in my resume? (Extra info: I have 1.5 years of experience in various Java Techs, from servers to mobile). How some companies and some other employers can see this plug in development professionally?

  • Solved: Chrome v18, self signed certs and &ldquo;signed using a weak signature algorithm&rdquo;

    - by David Christiansen
    So chrome has just updated itself automatically and you are now running v18 – great. Or is it… If like me, you are someone that are running sites using a self-signed SSL Certificate (i.e. when running a site on a developer machine) you may come across the following lovely message; Fear not, this is likely as a result of you following instructions you found on the apache openssl site which results in a self signed cert using the MD5 signature hashing algorithm. Using OpenSSL The simple fix is to generate a new certificate specifying to use the SHA512 signature hashing algorithm, like so; openssl req -new -x509 -sha512 -nodes -out server.crt -keyout server.key Simples! Now, you should be able to confirm the signature algorithm used is sha512 by looking at the details tab of certificate Notes If you change your certificate, be sure to reapply any private key permissions you require – such as allowing access to the application pool user.

    Chrome résiste aux attaques des experts en sécurité Lors de la première journée du Pwn2Own 2010, pas les autres navigateurs La nouvelle n'en est pas vraiment une. Mais elle a au moins le mérite de rappeler une évidence : aucun navigateur n'est sûr à 100 %. Safari, Internet Explorer (version 8) et Firefox n'ont pas résisté aux attaques des experts en sécurité lors du Pwn2Own qui se déroule actuellement. Le Pwn2Own est concours de hacking où les navigateurs sont mis à rude épreuve. Le but est de mettre à jour leurs failles et leurs vulnérabilités. Le but n'est évidemment pas de créer de l'insécurité. Au contraire, il s'agit d'attirer l'attention des éditeurs s...

  • How to detect popup of a sub-menu of a popup menu (and how to populate it dynamically)?

    - by Heinrich Ulbricht
    Hi everyone, I have a popup menu which contains several menu items and one of them can have child items. This entry has a little arrow on the right and when you hover your mouse over it, a sub-menu will open. Now I want to populate this sub-menu at runtime, but only if the user actually opens it. If the user never opens the sub-menu, it will be empty (maybe contain a placeholder). How could I accomplish this? Is it even possible to modify a popup-menu when it is already visible? Thanks for your help!

  • Can I use Pub/Sub model with Many Publishers and Only One Subscriber?

    - by rauch
    I need to send some files from different machines to only one Server. As I understand, I can use JMS api + (for example) ActiveMQ as broker. There are two models: p2p and pub/sub. I would like to use pub/sub model, but the problem is that I haven`t few subscribers, I have only one Subscriber(Server) and many Publishers. The question is the following: can I use pub/sub model for my situation and How can I send files from different machines to Only One Topic, on that Server sibscribed? May be any other ideas, thanks a lot.

  • Using dispatchertimer in combination with an asynchroneous call

    - by Civelle
    Hi. We have an issue in our Silverlight application which uses WCF and Entity Framework, where we need to trap the event whenever a user shuts down the application by closing the web page or the browser instead of closing the silverlight application. This is in order to verify if any changes have been made, in which case we would ask the user if he wants to save before leaving. We were able to accomplish the part which consists in trapping the closing of the web page: we wrote some code in the application object that have the web page call a method in the silverlight application object. The problem starts when in this method, we do an asynchroneous call to the Web Service to verify if changes have occured (IsDirty). We are using a DispatcherTimer to check for the return of the asynchroneous call. The problem is that the asynchroneous call never completes (in debug mode, it never ends up stepping into the _BfrServ_Customer_IsDirtyCompleted method), while it used to work fine before we added this new functionality. You will find belowthe code we are using. I am new to writing timers in combination with asynchroneous call so I may be doing something wrong but I cannot figure out what. I tried other things also but we without any success.. ====================== CODE ============================================== 'Code in the application object Public Sub New() InitializeComponent() RegisterOnBeforeUnload() _DispatcherTimer.Interval = New TimeSpan(0, 0, 0, 0, 500) End Sub Public Sub RegisterOnBeforeUnload() 'Register Silverlight object for availability in Javascript. • Code that Worked with MultiView fails with Wizard ASP.NET

    - by davemackey
    I originally created a process that occurred by transitioning between views in a multiview and it worked fine. Now, I've moved this same code into a ASP.NET Wizard and it keeps throwing an error at the second step. The error is: Method 'System.Object AndObject(System.Object, System.Object)' has no supported translation to SQL. Any ideas why this would occur when moving the code into the wizard? I'm sure its something stupid, but I've checked over the code 3-4 times now and it appears identical operationally. Here is the code: ' Make sure we have the LDAP portion of the .NET Framework available. Imports System.DirectoryServices ' Allows us to interface with LDAP. • jquery selecting all last elements of an nested tree menu unordered list...not just the :last-child.

    I'm having some trouble figuring this out. I have an unordered list menu that I want to style all the last elements with a folder icon and style all the expandable (parent) elements with a plus.gif image. I wanted to simply change the class by using .addclass() using jquery, which will contain the css to add the background-image. My jquery code below is only selecting the ":last-child", which is placing a folder icon on the last element in the list. i need to place a folder icon in front of all the "li's" that don't hav any children, and place a plus icon in front of all those that do have children. Is there a way to accomplish this? Here's my HTML: <ul id="nav"> <li>Heading 1 <ul> <li>Sub page A <ul> <li>Sub page A - 1 <ul> <li>A - 1: 0</li> <li>A - 1: 1</li> <li>A - 1: 2</li> </ul> </li> <li>Sub page A - 3</li> <li>Sub page A - 2</li> </ul> </li> <li>Sub page B</li> <li>Sub page C <ul> <li>Sub page C - 1 <ul> <li>C - 1: 0</li> <li>C - 1: 1</li> <li>C - 1: 2</li> </ul> </li> <li>Sub page C - 3</li> <li>Sub page C - 2</li> </ul> </li> </ul> </li> <li>Heading 2 <ul> <li>Sub page D</li> <li>Sub page E</li> <li>Sub page F</li> </ul> </li> <li>Heading 3 <ul> <li>Sub page G</li> <li>Sub page H</li> <li>Sub page I</li> </ul> </li> </ul> Here's the jquery code: $(function(){ //add class to last item in each list $('#nav li').find('li:last').addClass('menu_last_child'); });

    - by anirudha
    Is IE9 a modern browser? i show you a post who compare IE as well as they compare chrome. Is IE9 a modern browser? well Are you thing that they make something bettter then thing another that what Firefox and chrome do whenever Microsoft do this. that's point that Microsoft always blast IE because they make version upon version not upon update like Firefox make 3.6.14 after 3.6.13 and chrome give update soon as possible but IE not come soon. they will thing for making 10 instead of giving update on 9. well what they tell us new. they make fool public everytime i believe they make fool public as same as today they maked for version 9 they show developer tool in 9 have three new tabs or pael are this enough. whenever  in chrome and firefox their is many plugin who make development easier IE still have a developer tool who not have enough power like Firebug in Firefox. they show performance but forget luna user [window xp] and their IE never runs on other plateform but chrome and firefox can. no customization in IE whenever chrome and firefox have uncountable plugin and addons. show features now in IE who already implemented in firefox very early. well their is no rule that static goes right every time not sure that IE and Firefox both are right in their language. their is no one predict what thing goes better in future. so well keep a thing in mind never wasted time and also thing to make task easier even you need to use sollution opensource or closesoure inside or outside MS does not matter. well everyone tell you much more then they do even IE and some other. they never tell you this thing not in IE but in another can be found they never tell you use other whenever you need a thing and never can be found in their software. you need to more beware of IE because they make them commorcial not really for public if really then why they stop wxp user to use them as well firefox and chrome never force. because they need a thing that force more then more copy of windows sale. so they thing to add a thing in window 8. the IE9 they thing to make before that they thing to make  this for windows 8. they always force user to purchase this for this. this for this. and this trick sell their software. well outside MS Mozilla and Chrome all behave better with user and their feedback. they respect user their privacy and feedback. if you not believe that how much problem you found in IE and they got solved soon as in chrome and firefox bug kill soon. because IE not opensource we need to  boycutt them secondly their is no customization then they make user task easier even with twitter and facebook.
