  I am trying to process with Proguard a MS Windows desktop application (Java 6 SE using the SWT lib provided by Eclipse). And I get the following critical error: Unexpected error while performing partial evaluation: Class = [org/eclipse/swt/widgets/DateTime] Method = [<init>(Lorg/eclipse/swt/widgets/Composite;I)V] Exception = [java.lang.IllegalArgumentException] (Can't find common super class of [java/lang/StringBuffer] and [org/eclipse/swt/internal/win32/TCHAR]) Error: Can't find common super class of [java/lang/StringBuffer] and [org/eclipse/swt/internal/win32/TCHAR] ---------------------------- When I tried to Google the error, it came out only on two spots on the entire web, that astonished me greatly. I am newbie using Proguard and Java code optimization tools at all. Any thoughts and suggestions how to fix this, will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  I'm writing a fairly uncomplicated program which can "connect" to several different types of data sources including text files and various databases. I've decided to implement each of these connection types as a class inherited from an interface I called iConnection. So, for example, I have TextConnection, MySQLConnection, &c... as classes. In another static class I've got a dictionary with human-readable names for these connections as keys. For the value of each dictionary entry, I want the class itself. That way, I can do things like: newConnection = new dict[connectionTypeString](); Is there a way to do something like this? I'm fairly new to C# so I'd appreciate any help.

  I learnt that I should be using service classes to persist entities into the database instead of putting such logic in models/controllers. • What is the right way to initialize a constant in Ruby?

  I have a simple class that defines some constants, e.g.: module Foo class Bar BAZ = "bof" ... Everything is puppies and rainbows until I tell Rake to run all my Test::Unit tests. When it does, I get warnings: bar.rb:3: warning: already initialized constant BAZ My habit has been to avoid these warnings by making the constant initialization conditional, e.g.: ... BAZ = "bof" unless const_defined? :BAZ ... This seems to solve the problem, but it is a little tedious, and I don't ever see anyone else initializing constants this way. This makes me think I might be Doing It Wrong. Is there a better way to initialize constants that won't generate warnings?

  I have a very special case in which I need to call a protected method from outside a class. I am very conscious about what I do programmingwise, but I would not be entirely opposed to doing so in this one special case I have. In all other cases, I need to continue disallowing access to the internal method, and so I would like to keep the method protected. What are some elegant ways to access a protected method outside of a class? So far, I've found this. I suppose it may be possible create some kind of double-agent instance of the target class that would sneakily provide access to the internals...

  AFAIK, ngen turns MSIL into native code (also reffered to as pre-JIT), however I never payed too much attention at it's startup performance impact. Ngen'd applications still require the .NET base class libraries (the runtime). Since the base class libraries have everything our .NET assemblies need (correct?) would it be possible to ship the framework's DLLs with my ngen'd application so that it does not require the runtime to be installed? (e.g., the scenario for most Windows XP machines) Oh, and please don't bother mentioning Remotesoft's Salamander Linker or Xenocode's Postbuild. They are not for my (and many's) current budget (and they seem to simply bundle the framework in a virtualized enviroinment, which means big download sizes and slow startup times I believe) EDIT: I know now, ngen doesn't do what I thought it did. But is it possible to bundle the .NET files with an application, without using a VM?

  hi, I am working in xcode on an ipod app in objective C, and I have a field (navigationController) in one of my classes (rootViewController). How do I reference the instantiated rootViewController's navigationController from another class? For example, how would I do this if I want to reference the navigationController from the FirstViewController.m class? I seem to only be able to find references for this to reference the application delegate. If I want to reference the application delegate with FirstViewController, I just say: MyAppDelegate *delegate = [[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; [delegate.navigationController pushViewController:childController animated:YES]; how do I do this for the rootViewController class instead of MyAppDelegate?

  I am writing some Selenium tests and I need to be able to find an ancestor of a WebElement that I have already found. This is what I'm trying but is returning no results // checkbox is also a WebElement WebElement container = checkbox.findElement(By.xpath( "current()/ancestor-or-self::div[contains(@class, 'x-grid-view')]") ); The image below shows the div that I have selected highlighted in dark blue and the one I want to find with an arrow pointing at it. • Java: where should I put anonymous listener logic code?

  Hi, we had a debate at work about what is the best practice for using listeners in java: whether listener logic should stay in the anonymous class, or it should be in a separate method, for example: button.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { // code here } }); or button.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { buttonPressed(); } }); private void buttonPressed() { // code here } which is the recommended way in terms of readability and maintainability? I prefer to keep the code inside the listener and only if gets too large, make it an inner class. Here I assume that the code is not duplicated anywhere else. Thank you.

• How get Android 2.1 SDK to recognize new class: SignalStrength

  The new Android 2.1 SDK (version 7) has a new class called SignalStrength: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/telephony/SignalStrength.html I updated my SDK in Eclipse to include the 2.1 add-on, and now I am trying to use this new class. However, when I go to do an import android.telephony.SignalStrength, it can't find it. Do I have to somehow reset my project to refresh the SDK so it knows about the new libraries? • how do I know when/where to invoke the overridden method of the super class

  Hi, This question occured to me while programming a Android application, but it seems to be a general programming question more. The situation is, I am extending (subclass-ing) an class from a library, and overriding a method. how do I know if I should invoke the method of super-class? and when? (in the beginning of the overridden method or in the end?) For example, I am overriding the method "public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu)" from class "Activity" in Android platform. And I saw someone write "return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu)" in the end of the method, in an example. But how do I know it should be done this way? and it is correct or not? what's the difference if I begin my method with "super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu)"? BR, Henry

  The MSDN site says: From your view class's function that handles the WM_CREATE message (typically OnCreate), call the new member variable's Register member function. Revoke will be called automatically for you when your view is destroyed. But I don't have an OnCreate function in the ChildView class. I do have OnCreate in the CMainFrame class. Can I register it there? What are the ramifications? PLEASE NOTE: I have it working for dropping files but I want to drop the text as a file, not at a cursor location like a text cut and paste, but rather I want the application to make a buffer to hold it, and I will treat it like a file.   I'm trying to get a window handle on a child window in my process and the only information I have is the window class name. Are there any win32 functions I can use for that? I'm doing this from C#. A bit more detail: This is a Visual Studio plugin, written in C#. So my process is visual studio, which has lots of windows. One of them has a window class "VsTipWindow". I don't know the immediate parent window of that window, all I have is the class name. Is there any way for me to get the window handle from just that?

• Unit Testing in QTestLib - running single test / tests in class / all tests

  I'm just starting to use QTestLib. I have gone through the manual and tutorial. Although I understand how to create tests, I'm just not getting how to make those tests convenient to run. My unit test background is NUnit and MSTest. In those environments, it was trivial (using a GUI, at least) to alternate between running a single test, or all tests in a single test class, or all tests in the entire project, just by clicking the right button. All I'm seeing in QTestLib is either you use the QTEST_MAIN macro to run the tests in a single class, then compile and test each file separately; or use QTest::qExec() in main() to define which objects to test, and then manually change that and recompile when you want to add/remove test classes. I'm sure I'm missing something. I'd like to be able to easily: Run a single test method Run the tests in an entire class Run all tests Any of those would call the appropriate setup / teardown functions.

I know I could reset each variable individually in the constructor; but is there a way to do this in bulk? Or am I doing something totally wrong that requires a different approach? I have found in MSDN that there are no special methods or properties in it, only derived from its ancestors (UIElement or FrameworkElement). ArrangeOverride and OnRender are also derived. So, what for Decorator class was designed and does it makes sense to use it? Or I can derive from FrameworkElement?

• Inheriting from class that inherits from DynamicObject

  Hello there, I'm experimenting with C# 4.0's dynamic object model. I've created an abstract class named "Block" that inherits from DynamicObject. It overrides TryGetMember and TrySetMember. Furthermore I've created a usable class named "Brush" that inherits from "Block". I want it to be usable dynamically. But when I create a dynamic object from it and try to access a runtime bound member, it pelts me with an exception telling me that the member doesn't exist. The overridden TryGetMember or TrySetMember methods of the abstract parent class aren't getting called. Is this behaviour to be expected? Thank you!

• Simple Properties in Objective-C Classes

  Hey, I've bene working with Objective-C for a while now, and so far I have never really needed to craft my own classes, properly. I am a bit confused with the two arguments you can give the @property(a, b) declaration in a header file. When creating outlets to Interface Builder I usually do @property(nonatomic, retain) but I have no idea what this means. I'm writing a simple class which has a set of properties which will be set from the outside, like [instance setName:@"Bla Bla Bla"]; or I guess like instance.name = @"Bla@" but I would rather the first option. How would I declare this kind of property on a class? Thanks in advanced! Sorry for the n00bish question :-)
