  a) I found two definitions of schema: FIRST - A set of information that describes a table is known as a schema, and schemas are used to describe specific tables within a database, as well as entire databases (and the relationship between tables in them, if any). SECOND - A database schema is a way to logically group objects such as tables, views, stored procedures etc. Think of a schema as a container of objects. • How to scale MongoDB

  I know that MongoDB can scale vertically. What about if I running out of disk? I am currently using EC2 with EBS. As you know, I have to assign EBS for a fixed size. What if the mongodb growth bigger than the EBS size? Do I have to create a larger EBS and Copy & Paste the files? Or shall we start more MongoDB instance and each connect to different EBS disk? In such case, I could connect to a different instance for different databases.

• Keeping a database structure up to date in a project where code is on subversion?

  I have been working with Subversion for a while now, and it's been incredible for the management of my projects, and even to help managing the deployment to several different servers, but there is just the one thing that still annoys me. Whenever I make any changes to the database structure, I need to update every server manually, I have to keep track of any changes I made, and because some of my servers run branches of the project (modifications that are still being worked on, or were made for different purposes), it's a bit awkward. Until now, I've been using a "database.sql" file, which is a dump of the database structure for a specific revision. But it just seems like such a bad way to manage this. And I was wondering, how does everyone else manage their MySQL databases when they're working on a project and using Subversion?

• NoSQL and meteorological data

  So there's this new cool thing, these NoSQL-databases. And so there's my data: Rows of rows of rows of meteorological data: Values, representing certain measurements at a certain station (Identified by a WMO number, not coordinates), at a certain time. Not every station measures every parameter, not every parameter is measured all the time. I store this data (30 years worth of hourly values, resulting in ~1 billion values) currently in MySQL. The continous growth and the forseeable addition of even more data give me a little headache. Reading about the document based NoSQL systems which seem to scale rather easily, I was wondering if NoSQL is a viable data storage concept for meteorological data too. Do you have any experience with this?

  Given a set of databases how can one you get information on a book with given price first (which consist of the average of a hidden list of prices coming from different web site) and followed by an optional second option that shows the list of the different web site with their page? To take an example given a query for ISBN 9785554443331 - it returns "Chemistry the central science 11 edition" : new:$50 used good condition:$35 used poor condition:$20 If the return does not match with our product list an option to "click here to visit our partner" appears and which returns: Atextbook: $10 Btextbook: $10 Ctextbook: $9 Dtextbook: $8.50 I understand that the first search would be done simultaneous on the web and our database to determine whether or not we have the book and the web to get the average of the price of a given list of web site. • API access to a manually-created Google Map

  I have a number of public custom Google Maps created via http://maps.google.com/ - obviously associated with my google account. Can I access these maps via the Google Maps javascript api? The api doesn't appear to work with the manually created maps located on maps.google.com from what I can tell? And if not, is there another way to store overlay data (markers, etc) that the javascript api can grab and load into the map on the client's browser? Am thinking a service like dabbleDB, except that I don't think they offer write access via javascript (this would be necessary for the user adding markers to the map, for example) Obviously I could create a db layer on my server, but am looking for a 'cloud' solution that removes the strain from my databases!!

• How to migrate large amounts of data from old database to new

  I need to move a huge amount of data from a couple tables in an old database to a couple different tables in a new database. The databases are SQL Server 2005 and are on the same box and sql server instance. I was told that if I try to do it all in one shot that the transaction log would fill up. Is there a way to disable the transaction log per table? If not, what is a good method for doing this? Would a cursor do it? This is just a one-time conversion.

• Create link on page w/ web address stored in database

  This seems like it should be easy, but I can't seem to figure it out. All of my google searches lead me to linking to databases which isn't what I want to do. I'm a complete web development newb. I've roughly followed the NerdDinner tutorial in creating my web app. One of my stored fields is a web address. On the Index and Details pages, when I display the info from my record, I want the web address to be a clickable link to the website. • Problem with connection to MS SQL Server database using SSMS

  I have a database on line with Godaddy (who uses SQL Server 2005). They provide basic management tools, but tell you that for more advanced tools you can connect directly using SSMS. I followed their instructions to ensure my online database will accept remote connections, and can apparently log in using SSMS with success (after giving my hostname and access data). However: When attempting to expand the "Databases" folder tree, I get the following error: Failed to retrieve data for this request. • Php PEAR, Database Abstraction & Factory Methods

  I'm interested in learning more about design practices in PHP for Database Abstraction & Factory methods. For background, my site is a special-interest social networking community currently in beta mode. Currently, I've started moving my old code for object retrieval to factory methods. However, I do feel like I'm limiting myself by keeping a lot of SQL table names and structure separated in each function/method. Questions: 1.) Is there a reason to use PEAR (or similar) if I dont anticipate switching databases? 2.) Can PEAR interface with the MySqli prepared statements I currently use? 3.) Will it help me separate table names from each method? (If no, what other design patterns might I want to research?) 4.) Will it slow down my site once I have a significantly large member base?

• SQL indexing on varchar

  I have a table whose columns are varchar(50) and a float - I need to (very quickly) look get the float associated with a given string. Even with indexing, this is rather slow. I know, however, that each string is associated with an integer, which I know at the time of lookup, so that each string maps to a unique integer, but each integer does not map to a unique string. One might think of it as a tree structure. Is there anything to be gained by adding this integer to the table, indexing on it, and using a query like SELECT floatval FROM mytable WHERE phrase=givenstring AND assoc=givenint? This is Postgres, and if you couldn't tell, I have very little experience with databases.

• MySQL to SQL Server - Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'mictest'

  First, I tried to migrate my databases with SQL Server Migration Assistant for MySql and it worked fine. But now, I have some problems with my code. I had this line on MYSQL version : $fct="SELECT * FROM `users` WHERE `USER` LIKE CONVERT( _utf8 '$LOGIN' USING latin1 ) COLLATE latin1_swedish_ci AND `PASS` LIKE CONVERT( _utf8 '$PASS'USING latin1 ) COLLATE latin1_swedish_ci"; This line worked fine but when i try to put this on my SQL Version i get : Error : SQLSTATE[42000]: [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]Incorrect syntax with the keyword 'mictest'. (which is my $LOGIN) I though it was a problem with "quotes" so I also tried this but it is not working : $fct="SELECT * FROM users WHERE USER LIKE CONVERT( _utf8 '$LOGIN' USING latin1 ) COLLATE latin1_swedish_ci AND PASS LIKE CONVERT( _utf8 '$PASS' USING latin1 ) COLLATE latin1_swedish_ci";

• Increase increment size to match GUID advantage

  Hi, I've been thinking of implementing this system, but can't help but feel there's a catch somewhere. One of the points of using GUID over incrementing int is that, in the future, if you were to merge databases together, you wouldn't have any clashes over the primary key/identifier. However, my approach is to set the increment size to X where X is the number of servers I'll most likely have in the future. Then, on each server, have the seed be an increment over the seed number on the previous server. That way, during merging, there would be no clashes with the primary key. Is this a safe, normal method or have I gone mental :)? Thanks

• Static Website - Converting to Dynamic, need to import information from database on different host

  This seems really complicated to ask about so I hope someone can help: We have a long time running static website held with a hosting company that provide PHP, Ruby-on-Rails and Drupal/Joomla support. A little limited I know but we got reasonably decent search engine rankings and didn't want them to drop. We have two much more recently created sites on another host written in Python/Django. The original site is now too big to handle statically and we want to create a more dynamic site in its place without changing servers/webhosts. The data we want to provide the 'new' dynamic site is from the same database providing the Django sites. What is the best solution to build the new site with? Is it better to create PHP pages that connect to the database on the other host? Ruby-on-rails seems like a very fast development environment not too dissimilar to Django, would we be able to fetch data from the existing databases into a rails site and use similar urls to our old static pages?

  I'm trying to calculate the data needed to generate a box plot which means I need to figure out the 1st and 3rd Quartiles along with the median. I have found some solutions for doing it in Postgresql however they seem to depend on either PL/Python or PL/R which it seems like Heroku does not have either enabled for their postgresql databases. In fact I ran "select lanname from pg_language;" and only got back "internal". I also found some code to do it in pure ruby but that seems somewhat inefficient to me. I'm rather new to Box Plots, Postgresql, and Ruby on Rails so I'm open to suggestions on how I should handle this. There is a possibility to have a lot of data which is why I'm concerned with performance however if the solution ends up being too complex I may just do it in ruby and if my application gets big enough to warrant it get my own Postgresql I can host somewhere else. *note: since I was only able to post one link, cause I'm new, I decided to share a pastie with some relevant information

  Hi, I have and old content database which i restored in my sharepoint 2007. But whenver i try to access web sites in my sharepoint i get error : 500 INTERNAL SERVER ERROR. I can see the old content database at :- Sharepoint Centre Admin-Application Management-Content databases. There is no difference in the version of the old content database.   i've got a list of all countries - states - cities (- subcities/villages etc) in a XML file and to retrieve for example a state's all cities it's really quick with XML (using xml parser). i wonder, if i put all this information in mysql, is retrieving a state's all cities as fast as with XML? cause XML is designed to store hierarchical data while relational databases like mysql are not. the list contains like 500 000 entities. so i wonder if its as fast as XML using either of: Adjacency list model Nested Set model And which one should i use? Cause (theoretically) there could be unlimited levels under a state. And which is fastest for this huge dataset? Thanks!

  I have multiple client databases that I need to hit on the fly and I am having trouble getting the code I have to work. At first I was just storing a connection string in a clinet object in the db, pulling it out based on logged-in user, and passing it to linq data context constructor. This works fine in my development enviorment but is failing on the Winhost server I am using. It is running SQL 2008. I am getting a "The current configuration system does not support user scoped settings." error. Any help or guidance on this issue is greatly appreciated. Greg

• Stored Procedure with ALTER TABLE

  I have a need to sync auto_increment fields between two tables in different databases on the same MySQL server. The hope was to create a stored procedure where the permissions of the admin would let the web user run ALTER TABLE [db1].[table] AUTO_INCREMENT = [num]; without giving it permissions (That just smells of SQL injection). My problem is I'm receiving errors when creating the store procedure. Is this something that is not allowed by MySQL? • Can I use a class as an object in .NET to create instances of that class?

  I'm writing a fairly uncomplicated program which can "connect" to several different types of data sources including text files and various databases. I've decided to implement each of these connection types as a class inherited from an interface I called iConnection. So, for example, I have TextConnection, MySQLConnection, &c... as classes. In another static class I've got a dictionary with human-readable names for these connections as keys. For the value of each dictionary entry, I want the class itself. That way, I can do things like: newConnection = new dict[connectionTypeString](); Is there a way to do something like this? I'm fairly new to C# so I'd appreciate any help.

• What to know - for building a form with PHP and MySQL

  Hello all, I have three weeks to perform the following basic task. I wish to create an online form in PHP that will get 5 numbers and with them: save the numbers to a MySQL DB do a simple computation on the numbers and return them as an output to the visitor I already have a domain, hosting and a MySQL database+user. I don't know PHP, or SQL or databases. I do have prior knowledge in C and R (which means I have some of the basics of programming, and I am not intimidated of a new languages). My question are: Am I missing something? is there some other skill I should have for this task that I don't know of? What is a good way to learn the skills needed for the task I described? • ASP.NET and Winforms: What PDF reporting tools are out there and recommended?

  I have ActiveReports for .Net which is a great tool, however the version I have is not going to support Visual Studio 2010. Active Reports quite pricey, so just wondering if there are any better alternatives out there at a competitive price or even open source, before I consider upgrading. I am looking for a reporting tool specifically, that has a designer and is programmable etc, not looking for something that can just produce PDF, eg iTextSharp etc. Output will primarily be PDF for web and windows applications. Using various databases, SQL Server, SQL Server Express, Azure and SQLite, so not sure SQL Server reporting services will work for all these cases. All coments appreciated.

• What does xp_qv do in SQL Server?

  Last night one of our SQL servers developed some major problems and after a colleague stopped, started, and all the usual things it started checking and rebuilding databases and is now running an extended stored procedure called "xp_qv". The internet seems to be very short of information on what this procedure does or anythign like that so I was hoping somebody here might be able to help. I should add that I assume it is meant to be running so the question isn't "Can I stop it" or anything like that, its just curiosity in what it is doing in the hope that it will help determine how long before things are usable again...
