  • What IDE(s) or editor(s) do companies like Google, Apple, IBM, etc. use?

    Even though I have quite some experience in using various tools, I still can't make up my mind whether I prefer using IDE or a simple editor for code editing. Most IDEs I have experienced are written in Java (like Eclipse) which makes them slow and bulky. What's good about them is that it provides lots of tools. On the other hand editors are usually VERY fast. They can also be extended to become more similar to IDEs but usually I don't do that. However, there is Sublime Text 2 which has some basic code completion built-in. My question would be whether most Enterprise companies like Google, Apple, IBM and etc (except Microsoft because they have AMAZING IDE which, I assume, is used by MS developers) force their workers to use IDEs and whether using plain editor with external tools is considered being not professional? P.S. Not talking about cases like Android development where working without IDE barely possible.

  • Host a IWpfTextView in a custom tool for a Visual Studio Extension

    I'm trying to create a IWpfTextView and then put it into a custom tool window. I can create the view, read a file to populate the ITextBuffer and display the view into my tool. I cannot edit the code at all and the code is not syntax highlighted. What steps am I missing to make this a full fledged editor?     I'm looking for a visual regression testing tool for CSS refactoring and see whether or not there are any unintended cascading behavior in a website. Ideally, the tool that can crawl a website (even locally) and grab snapshots of each page and store it in a single repository. When run for the second time, it will show the pages that are visually different since the last time it was run. Even better: if it can show the overlapper XOR view of the 2 version of the page. compare rendering results of different browsers (almost like an automated Microsoft Expression Web compare feature).     I love reStructuredText, however the tools that support it are scattered all over the Internet. The official tool list is incomplete and/or outdated, and can be updated only via commit privileges. For some time there was a comprehensive list at the Wikipedia reStructuredText page, but this apparently "may not meet the notability guideline for web content" and is scheduled for removal. So to put it in a question form: What tool support can one expect to find when working with reStructuredText, e.g. text editors, Wiki software, converters to and from reStructuredText etc.?

  • Effective file permissions tool's api in windows

    Starting from Windows Server 2003, Windows included a new tool which calculates the effective permissions for a user (basically it resolves all groups access and takes care of all "deny" permissions as well). An example in point is that a user A belongs to groups B and C. B has been denied read permissions on a file F, while C has been allowed read and write permissions on the file and I want to calculate the effective permissions user A has on file F. This tool is available on Windows Server 2003,Vista,7 and Server 2008 by right clicking on a file and going to properties - security - advanced - effective permissions. What I need is an API in C# which does the same job. The most common FILE API returns access rules (class FileAccessRules), but there seems to be no direct way to calculate effective permissions from these set of access rules. Note: I do not want to process effective permissions in the code if at all possible, but am ready to do so as a last resort.

    Hello. I need a tool to decompile obfuscated .NET code. Yes, I know about Reflector and its plugins (FileDisassemble, FileGenerator). But they create VS project which won't compile. For an example the decompiled code contains: private sealed class d__0 : IEnumerator, IEnumerator, IDisposable { private int <1__state; private int <2__current; I need a tool which could rename automatically such name into readable (read "compilable") form.     Hi, So I work on a small php website tool that a few people use and what I'm looking to have added is a little version checker in it. The tool is normally hosted by others on different servers/domains/whatever have you so I'm having a bit of a trouble figuring out how I can accomplish this and do so in the best possible method. So what I'm looking to do is have a webpage that just has a number on it which is the latest version. Lets say 3.2.2 is displayed on www.myawesomephptool.com/version.html in some way shape or form . Now on their installation when they open up their admin page it pulls in that 3.2.2 as the latest version to see if they are on that version. So trying to keep it simple on requirements too.   • Tool for parsing smtp logs that finds bounces

    Our web application sends e-mails. We have lots of users, and we get lots of bounces. For example, user changes company and his company e-mail is no longer valid. To find bounces, I parse smtp log file with log parser. Some bounces are great, like 550+#[email protected]. There is [email protected] in bounce. But some do not have e-mail in error message, like 550+No+such+recipient. I have created simple ruby script that parses logs (uses log parser) to find which mail caused something like 550+No+such+recipient. I am just surprised that I could not find a tool that does it. I have found tools like zabbix and splunk for log analysis, but they look like overkill for such simple task. Anybody knows a tool that would parse smtp logs, find bounces and e-mails that cause them? Edit: smtp server is microsoft smtp server.

  • A tool to find and fix incomplete source code documentation

    I have several finished, older PHP projects with a lot of includes that I would like to document in javadoc/phpDocumentor style. While working through each file manually and being forced to do a code review alongside the documenting would be the best thing, I am, simply out of time constraints, interested in tools to help me automate the task as much as possible. The tool I am thinking about would ideally have the following features: Parse a PHP project tree and tell me where there are undocumented files, classes, and functions/methods (i.e. elements missing the appropriate docblock comment) Provide a method to half-way easily add the missing docblocks by creating the empty structures and, ideally, opening the file in an editor (internal or external I don't care) so I can put in the description. Optional: Automatic recognition of parameter types, return values and such. But that's not really required. The language in question is PHP, though I could imagine that a C/Java tool might be able to handle PHP files after some tweaking. Thanks for your great input!

    I'm writing a Navigation-Based iPhone app, and I'd like to have a UIToolBar docked at the bottom of my screen, with a UITableView scrolling between the tool bar and the navigation bar. I used [[self navigationController] setToolbarHidden:NO] and - (void)setToolbarItems:(NSArray *)toolbarItems animated:(BOOL)animated to set the UIToolBar. UIToolBar correctly shows in current view. If I drill down into a detail view using the button on navigation bar, i cannot return back to previous view. Before I add the tool bar, it can return back. I am wondering is there anything else should be noted when use UIToolbar?

  • Windows disassembler: looking for a tool...

    Hello. I'm looking for a (preferably free) tool that can produce "proper" disassembly listing from a (non-.NET) windows PE file (*.exe or *.dll). Important requirement: it should be possible to run the listing through a windows assembler (nasm, masm or whatever) and get working exe again (not necessarily identical to original one, but it should behave in the same way). Intended usage is adding new subroutines into existing code, when source is not available. Ideally, tool should be able to detect function/segment boundaries, API calls, and generate proper labels for jumps (I can live without labels for loops/jumps, though, but function boundary detection would be nice), and keep program resources/segments in place. I'm already aware of IdaPRO(not free), OllyDBG (useful for in-place hacking, doesn't generate disassembly listing, AFAIK), ndisasm (output isn't suitable for assembler), dumpbin (useful, but AFAIK, output isn't suitable for assembler) and "proxy dll" technique. Ideas? Or maybe there is a book/tutorial that explains some kind of alternative approach?

  • MinGW - cross compile tool - latest version?

    At the MinGW download page you can download the "Cross-Hosted MinGW Build Tool" which is a shell script to build the "MinGW cross-compiler" so that you will be able to compile your programs on "Linux" to the "Windows" target. I have downloaded that script, run it and answered the interactive questions the script has asked me. I had to dowload some files from which one has name "gcc-core". And the "latest" version of the "gcc-core source code" I have found on that page, was "gcc-core-3.4.5-20060117-2-src.tar.gz" - so that "3.4.5" version. But on "Ubuntu Linux" I can download the precompiled "mingw32" package which is of the version "4.2.1". How is it possible that the "Ubuntu package" version of MinGW is newer than the one from the MinGW "homepage"? So which is the latest version of the "MinGW cross compile tool"?

  • Replicating MySQL DB to development machine - bad idea?

    I am considering replicating a production MySQL database to my development machine so I've always got current data. The production database is externally hosted. My development machine is behind an unreliable internet connection. It is entirely possible that the development machine could be disconnected from the internet for extended periods of time (hours). Would there be any adverse effect on the production database by doing this? (I don't strictly need live data - but it would be nice, and good excuse to dabble with replication. If the consensus is that this is a bad idea, I'll set up a daily job to import the previous night's backup into my development database)
