• Will the Driver Support for Intel HD Graphics be Improved in 12.10?

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a HP Pavilion dv4 laptop. This is a core i7 machine with Intel HD graphics and also a separate nVidia VGA card. I had a lot of issues getting Ubuntu 12.04 working on this system. First there were issues booting up the live CD for installation. I worked around that by using the 'nomodeset' option. Then I continued to have similar issues after installation has completed. So I had to permanently add the nomodeset option to my GRUB boot configuration. At the moment I have a working installation but there are many issues: Ubuntu GUI is a bit flaky at times. The mouse pointer goes on and off when hovering over certain icons. Certain things doesn't get rendered properly on the screen. I can't access any of the tty consoles. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6] gives me a blank screen. And once that happens I can't even come back to the UI by hitting Ctrl+Alt+F7. I've realized that tty consoles are actually working. I just can't see the text. If I enter a command like 'sudo reboot' into the empty screen the machine reboots. Can't get external displays (monitors, projectors etc) working. But I think this is probably because the VGA out is wired to the nVidia card which is not being used by Linux. colord program crashes every now and then triggering a popup message. So my main question is, will the support for Intel HD graphics be improved in the next release? Or will I have to keep using the nomodeset option in the new release too? Also I appreciate if anybody can shed some light on any of the issues listed above. Thanks in advance.

• How to get monitor resolution of 1680x1050 using ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in a dual monitor setup

  I have Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card in my Windows Server 2008 x64 machine. It has two outputs a VGA and a DVI. I have connected the DVI to my Dell 24" monitor with 1900x1200 resolution and it works 100%. The VGA I have connected to my second monitor a Samsung 22" with native resolution of 1680x1050. But the ATI driver and Catalyst control centre doesn't show this resolution as an option. If I choose a lower resolution like 1280x1024 it looks really bad and fuzzy. I searched in google and downloaded the powerstrip tool that allowed me to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050 and then this option shows up in Catalyst control centre and my 2nd monitor works fine now. But I don't want to pay for an application to choose a display resolution. Why doesn't ATI show me that option by default even though it has no problem in actually supporting the display at resolution. Is there a way to get 1680x1050 resolution using ATI drivers only ?

• How to make mouse in Windows 7 act the same as Windows XP

  In Windows XP using TweakUI I could enable an option so that when my mouse goes over an inactive window, it makes that window the active window. There is also another separate option so that if the window becomes active, it automatically becomes the topmost window. I like to enable the former but not the latter. For Windows 7 I have not been able to find the same thing. What I found instead is an option inside windows that does something similar. If I move my mouse over an inactive window, I have to hover over it for a while before it becomes active. It is not instantaneous. The second problem is that once it does become active, it automatically makes itself the topmost window, covering other things I don't want covered. In summary, this is what I want in Windows 7: When my mouse goes over an inactive window, it immediately makes it the active window. When it activates the window, it does not raise it above other windows.

  I downloaded the server version of Ubuntu from Ubuntu's official site. Created a Bootable USB from the ISO file I downloaded. I connected through Internet using DHCP in the installation process. While I was installing it on my Desktop Computer (pentium D 1 GB RAM) I have this error "Bad Archive Mirror". I also found 2-3 questions with same problem on forum but I didn't get solution of my problem from them.

• SQL Cluster install on Hyper V options

  I've been reading up on running a SQL Cluster in a Hyper V environment and there seems to be a couple of options: Install guest cluster on 2 VMs that are themselves part of a fail over cluster. Install SQL cluster on 2 VMs but the VMs themselves are not part of an underlying cluster. With option 1, it's little more complex as there's effectively two clusters in play but this adds some flexibility in the sense that I'm free to migrate the VMs between and physical blades in their cluster for physical maintenance without affecting the status of the SQL guest cluster that's running within them. With option 2, the set-up is a bit simpler as there's only 1 cluster in the mix but my VMs are anchored to the physical blades that they're set-up on (I'll ignore the fact I could manually move the VHDs for the purposes of this question). Are there any other factors that I should consider here when deciding which option to go for? I'm free to test out both options and probably will do but if any one has working experience of these set-ups and can offer some input that would be great.

• Ubuntu 13.10 has no Suspend or Hibernate Options

  I have a Lenova Yoga 2 Pro, and I have Ubuntu 13.10 installed. I am having some issues setting the power functions. At the moment I can not suspend or hibernate the laptop. So from Gnome 3.10 I have the option to Log Out, Shutdown & Restart. No option for Suspend / Hibernate. Weirdly however I can use these commands to get the right behaviour sudo pm-suspend sudo pm-hibernate So the laptop knows how to do this, it just is not giving me the option and also when I set "Close screen lid" to suspend, well nothing happens. It feels like there is a "connection" not being made.

• MySQL keeps crashing due to bug

  So about a week ago, I finally figured out what was causing my server to continually crash. After reviewing my mysqld.log I keep seeing this same error, 101210 5:04:32 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 Here is a link to the bug report, http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=35346 someone recommend that you set the max_join_size vaule in my.cnf to 4M, and I did. I assumed this fixed the issue, and it was working for about a week with no issues until today... Unfortunately this article is for Macs and I use Windows. The article mentions 3 jobs that need to be completed.' A) - pointing all clients to the location of the Library. This is understandable and I can replicate using windows clients. B) Universal Library Set-up. This mentions holing the option key and double click iTunes icon. This is so you can create the index at a specific location C) Point clients to index. Again this mentions Option double click. What is the Windows equivalent to option double click iTunes?

• Gigabit connection between 2 computers

  I am trying to set up a connection between 2 pc's. It's a direct cable connection. The problem that I am having is that the connection isn't gigabit. I know both network cards support gigabit. I checked in the device settings and in one pc I can see in the Speed & Duplex the 1Gbps option but on the other pc I can't see that option despite the fact that the network card is gigabit. I have quite some files to copy from one pc onto another and I really need a good connection between them. I can't really remove the hard drive because it would void the warranty. Could this be a driver issue or a cable issue? On both pc's I have windows 8. The network card on the pc that doesn't have the 1 gbps option is an Atheros ar8161 card.

• using Silverlight 3's HtmlPage.Window.Navigate method to reuse an already open browser window

  Hi, I want to use an external browser window to implement a preview functionality in a silverlight application. There is a list of items and whenever the user clicks one of these items, it's opened in a separate browser window (the content is a pdf document, which is why it is handled ouside of the SL app). Now, to achieve this, I simply use HtmlPage.Window.Navigate(new Uri("http://www.bing.com")); which works fine. Now my client doesn't like the fact that every click opens up a new browser window. He would like to see the browser window reused every time an item is clicked. So I went out and tried implementing this: Option 1 - Use the overload of the Navigate method, like so: HtmlPage.Window.Navigate(new Uri("http://www.bing.com"), "foo"); I was assuming that the window would be reused when the same target parameter value (foo) would be used in subsequent calls. This does not work. I get a new window every time. Option 2 - Use the PopupWindow method on the HtmlPage HtmlPage.PopupWindow(new Uri("http://www.bing.com"), "blah", new HtmlPopupWindowOptions()); This does not work. I get a new window every time. Option 3 - Get a handle to the opened window and reuse that in subsequent calls private HtmlWindow window; private void navigationButton_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { if (window == null) window = HtmlPage.Window.Navigate(new Uri("http://www.bing.com"), "blah"); else window.Navigate(new Uri("http://www.bing.com"), "blah"); if (window == null) MessageBox.Show("it's null"); } This does not work. This does work. The only thing is that the window behaves a little strange and I'm not sure why: I'm behind a proxy and in all other scenarios I'm being prompted for my password. In this case however I am not (and am thus not able to reach the external site - bing in this case). This is not really a huge issue atm, but I just don't understand what's goign on here. Whenever I type another url in the address bar of the popup window (eg www.google.com) and press enter, it opens up another window and prompts me for my proxy password. As a temporary solution option 5 could do, but I don't like the fact that Silverlight is not able to manage this. One of the main reasons my client has opted for Silverlight is to be protected against all the browser specific hacking that comes with javascript. Am I doing something wrong? I'm definitely no javascript expert, so I'm hoping it's something obvious I'm missing here. Cheers, Phil

• non-static variable cannot be referenced from a static context (java)

  I ask that you ignore all logic.. i was taught poorly at first and so i still dont understand everything about static crap and its killing me. My error is with every single variable that i declare then try to use later inside my methods... i get the non-static variable cannot~~ error I can simply put all the rough coding of my methods inside my cases, and it works but then i cannot use recursion... • JQuery SelectToUISlider Issues

  Hopefully this hasn't been asked before as just a slider question, but I couldn't find an answer when already browsing questions. So, here goes: I have a SelectToUISlider (http://www.filamentgroup.com/lab/update_jquery_ui_slider_from_a_select_element_now_with_aria_support/) which is basically a modified JQuery UI Slider, and I'm using a range value. So, I start with one handle at 60, and another at 100 (scale from 0 to 100). What I want to do is click a radio button so that the 100 changes to a 0, and be able to change back to 100. I have been unsuccessful at changing it via JQuery selectors/javascript. However, when changing the selects to move the handles, this works, but the range appears not to follow if the second handle (at 100) moves to 0 behind the first handle (at 60). I'm thinking I might have to destroy the slider and rebuild it with the second handle (that starts as 100) become the first handle at 0 in this scenario (although I've tried destroying it and it doesn't seem to respond to that either.) • Null date reference when passing json to MVC Controller

  I am building an event system that posts data to a google calendar. I am using jquery 1.4.2, fullcalendar 1.4.5, and asp.net MVC 2. I am using a jquery ui modal dialog for the entry system. Jquery ui datepicker for the from and to fields. Select boxes for the time fields. I have tried both string and DateTime formats in the GCalEvent Class for startDate, startTime, endDate and endTime. • Using label tags in a validation summary error list?

  I was thinking about making use of <label> tags in my validation error summary on a failed form submit and I can't figure out if it is going to get me in trouble down the line. Can anyone think of a good reason to avoid this approach? Usability, functionality, design, or other issues are all helpful. I really like the idea of clicking a line item in the error list and being jumped to the offending input element, especially in a mobile HTML scenario where vertical orientation is more common and scrolling is a pain. So far the only problem I can find is that labels don't navigate for radio buttons or checkboxes without individual IDs (Clicking a label for a single ID-tagged radio/checkbox element alters its selection). It doesn't make it any worse than no label, though.   Thanks to stackoverflow.com's frienly experts I've managed to create my first php + mysql application. The code searches a mysql database for last names and cities. The choices are made through two drop lists like these: Choose city: All cities Liverpool Manchester Choose last name: All last names Lennon Gallagher The code would return eg. all the Lennons living in Liverpool. However, I haven't been able to make the options "All cities" and "All last names" to work so that the code would return eg. all the Lennons living in any city or all the people living in Liverpool. So, how can that be done? • jQuery , Trigger change event on newly created elements

  Hi Guys, I have a button in a form that when clicked adds another set of form fields, In these form fields there are 2 drop downs where the contents of the 2nd dropdown rely on what is selected in the first dropdown... What i want to do is when the new form field button is clicked for the new items to be added and then the change event to be triggered on the drop down that was created so what only that drop down changes and not all the drop downs with the same name currently in that form. • Break in Class Module vs. Break on Unhandled Errors (VB6 Error Trapping, Options Setting in IDE)

  Basically, I'm trying to understand the difference between the "Break in Class Module" and "Break on Unhandled Errors" that appear in the Visual Basic 6.0 IDE under the following path: Tools --> Options --> General --> Error Trapping The three options appear to be: Break on All Errors Break in Class Module Break on Unhandled Errors Now, apparently, according to MSDN, the second option (Break in Class Module) really just means "Break on Unhandled Errors in Class Modules". Also, this option appears to be set by default (ie: I think its set to this out of the box). What I am trying to figure out is, if I have the second option selected, do I get the third option (Break on Unhandled Errors) for free? In that, does it come included by default for all scenarios outside of the Class Module spectrum? To advise, I don't have any Class Modules in my currently active project. I have .bas modules though. Also, is it possible that by Class Mdules they may be referring to normal .bas Modules as well? (this is my second sub-question). Basically, I just want the setting to ensure there won't be any surprises once the exe is released. I want as many errors to display as possible while I am developing, and non to be displayed when in release mode. Normally, I have two types of On Error Resume Next on my forms where there isn't explicit error handling, they are as follows: On Error Resume Next ' REQUIRED On Error Resume Next ' NOT REQUIRED The required ones are things like, checking to see if an array has any length, if a call to its UBound errors out, that means it has no length, if it returns a value 0 or more, then it does have length (and therefore, exists). These types of Error Statements need to remain active even while I am developing. However, the NOT REQUIRED ones shouldn't remain active while I am developing, so I have them all commented out to ensure that I catch all the errors that exist. Once I am ready to release the exe, I do a CTRL+H to find all occurrences of: 'On Error Resume Next ' NOT REQUIRED (You may have noticed they are commented out)... And replace them with: On Error Resume Next ' NOT REQUIRED ... The uncommented version, so that in release mode, if there are any leftover errors, they do not show to users.
