• Help installing fedora13 from DvD?

  I have windows xp on my dell but I lost the drivers disk so I want to install linux Fedora 13 instead and wipe the windows xp. I burned the iso to a dvd and loaded up the live session user and used "Install to harddrive" but when I get to the partitioning window there is no harddrives to install to so I cant overwrite the windows drive (/C:).. Help?

• How to mount a HFS partition in Ubuntu as Read/Write?

  I plugged in my external harddrive (which was formatted on my Mac into HFS+ journaled) to my Ubuntu desktop 9.04 64bit. I am not able to get the drive to mount with write capability, how do I do that? Right now all I'm getting is read access, I tried sudo mount -t hfsplus /dev/sdf2 /media/"Portable HD" but that still gave me only read access... ideas??

• Getting a hardware profile from Fedora 12 after installation

• Cloning Windows 7 to Another Machine

  I am trying to clone a Windows 7 Install from one machine to others, in a computer lab situation. I have used clonezilla to make an image of the machine's harddrive and then attempted to write that image to a second machine's disk. Everything went fine, but when I try to boot Windows 7 on the second machine I get a blue screen flash and then it tries to run the startup repair tool, which runs unsuccessfully. Is there something new with Windows 7 that keeps it from being cloned like this?

I looked at the drive properties and there are two options: [X] Enable write caching on the device [ ] Turn off windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device As you can see, the first option is checked already, but the second option isn't. I've heard the second option can really speed things up, but it also sounds very risky. Is it safe to do on a laptop that rarely is off of AC power? (but still has battery as well)

• Acer Aspire 5315 Boot order doesn't show CD-ROM

  Hi, I have an ACER ASPIRE 5315 laptop. I want use the recovery disk but, the boot manager does not show the CD-ROM bootable option. In the BIOS settings the I set the boot priority to USB CD-ROM first and then the harddrive. But its not working. When I press F12 the boot manager doesnot show the USB CD-ROM device. Please assist. • Why is it I can't use my Windows installation both as a host and a guest?

  I have Linux installed on my harddrive, sometimes I run it as the host operating system and sometimes run it as a guest in Windows using VirtualBox. It's a nice ability, I think. I don't think it's possible with Windows though. Is it because your average distribution includes drivers for everything known to man? Are devices/drivers configured statically in Windows so when somethings changed it breaks?

  I was just going through some all-in-one desktop PCs (Dell Studio One, HP Touch Smart, Lenovo IdeaCenter, etc.) and their specs really look good (4 GB RAM, 2.x GHz Core 2 Duo, etc.) Are there any disadvantages of such PCs as a developer machine? I mostly do Java (Eclipse + MySQL + Tomcat / JBoss) or .NET (Visual Studio + MsSQL) development. Edit: One common question I could see is harddrive size and that's around 320 GB 7200 RPM.

• Benchmark virtual machines?

  I'm looking for a good way to benchmark the performance of Ubuntu machines (preferably from the command line - only care about harddrive speed, memory, and cpu - not graphics). Are there any programs that could also be used on Mac or Windows so I could compare the results against an Apple or PC Desktop? Ultimately I'd like to use these benchmarks to compare different virtual machine configurations (speeds on different hosts and different hardware to get practical idea of the differences between different setups a rigs). I can ping (echo-request) the external address and receive a pong (echo-reply) but ICMPv6 messages initiated on the far side are dropped.   Hi have some questions for Zimbra v8.0.6GA. Under Configure - MTA - Network, I'm seeing a few settings and am not very clear what to do with them. Web mail MTA Host name Is this for delivering local mail only (ie not for external mails)? According to this link, it says the following. That's a mouthful but what is "composed messages"? Is this for a multi server deployment where the Postfix server for Zimbra isn't installed on the same box that as the rest of the servers? Webmail MTA is used by the Zimbra server for composed messages and must be the location of the Postfix server in the Zimbra MTA. Relay MTA for external delivery My understanding after reading the doc is that if my ISP doesn't force me to relay outgoing mails through them, and I have enabled DNS lookup, I can leave this blank? Inbound SMTP host name Sorry I know this is explained as "If your MX records point to a spam-relay or any other external non-Zimbra server, enter the name of that server in the Inbound SMTP host name field." but I'm not following. Can someone provide an example? MTA Trusted Networks The admin doc says "To set up MTA trusted networks on a per server basis, make sure that MTA trusted networks have been set up as global settings and then go the Configure Servers MTA page and in the MTA Trusted Networks field enter the trusted network addresses for the server." However I see out of the box it has default networks setup for the server whereas on a global level it's blank. Does this mean there is a bug with the install software and I have to copy the setting from the server to the global setting?

• wget mirroring, subdomains and directories and cookies

  Hi all, I have an account on a web page that is now "full" (ie I have used up all my allocated space) and I would like to make a mirror of that site. wget seems like the thing to use. The problem is that I would only like to mirror the sites the lie within this directory http://user.domain.com/room/2324343/transcript/ (and sub-directories). Whilst saving the correct stylesheets, javascripts and css etc which exist in different directories. There as also uploaded files that are linked to within the pages in the transcript directory (on different directories) that I would like to download/mirror (theses are in a variatey of formats .exe, .py, .png, .app (and many more)). There are also images that are on different severs that are on these pages. Also I would like it if the links (which are sometimes relative , sometimes absoulute (but to internal things), sometimes external ) worked correctly so that if they link to things that have been downloaded(mirrored) they work fine (without internet connection), but if they link to things that are external or havent been mirrored they link to the external site. Basically so they work as expected. Another problem is that you have to log in to acess the site. Can wget be used to acomplish this or is there a better way? either way how do I achive this? (I have asked this question at stackoverflow.com/questions/2190115/wget-mirroring-subdomains-and-directories-and-cookies but it was recommended that I try asking it here)

These sites will be used like "dropboxes" or FTP sites so that my company can make large files available to outside contacts, and vice versa. If possible, I would like to store the external usernames and passwords in a database that I can write a small GUI for so that management can handle adding their own external contacts. Each client site must be sandboxed from each other and from my main company SharePoint site. I would like to keep everything running on port 80 and be able to access the sites as either clientname.mycompany.com or www.mycompany.com/clientname If anybody has ever done this I would really appreciate hearing about any lessons you learned and suggestions for how to set this up. • Networking Home Office

  I'm in the process of building an office in my garden. It's about 25m away from my house. I'd like to run a wired network connection to the office. I'd rather not go down the powerline route, as speeds don't seem great, and I'm likely to want to be moving a lot of data around on the internal network. I have an electrician who is running armoured electrical cable to the office, and is providing conduit for me to run network cable. My questions are: 1) What type of cable to run 2) How I terminate/connect it at both ends I could get something like armoured cat6 utp solid core (like this: http://www.netstoredirect.com/cat6-cable/289166-external-armoured-cat6-utp-solid-cable-price-per-metre.html) which seems fairly robust, but then I have to terminate it. Additionally, where the cable enters my house, there is about another 15m to where my router is situated. I also read this artice: http://www.audioholics.com/audio-video-cables/bjc-cat-network-cable-quality-interview which scared me into realising I don't know what I'm doing!! particularly with termination. Or I could get an "cat6 external patch cable" (e.g http://www.netstoredirect.com/rj45-network-cables/239231-external-cat6-utp-ldpe-rj45-patch-leads.html) and run that in the conduit, and work out how to terminate it at the house end. At the office end I guess I can just plug it into a switch. Any help? Thanks

• How to connect through a proxy using Remote Desktop?

  So I've got a home server running Windows Server 2003. I use a dual network card setup and Routing and Remote Access to link the internal, private network to the external connection. The external connection hooks directly to my cable modem (so no routers or other devices sitting between). The problem I'm having is that I can't connect remotely from a location outside the house (so connecting to the server's external connection) to the server using either Remote Desktop or VNC. I have enabled both ports in Routing and Remote Access's firewall to allow access, and I have enabled Remote Desktop in Windows Server 2003. The odd thing is that I can access my home server's SVN repository and I can even ping the server's IP. I am using the IP to attempt to connect, though I use a dyndns.com provided name to connect to my SVN repository, so it shouldn't make a difference (I know the IP is getting resolved correctly). Any ideas on where to start diagnosing this one? I haven't seen anything in my server's event log. If any other info is needed, let me know. Thanks. UPDATE: One last piece of information: We use a proxy server at work, which I'm nearly 100% sure is the culprit. I have a workaround--if I connect to our VPN (even though I'm already inside the building) I am able to connect to my home server. This is with VNC. However, is there a way to connect through a proxy using Remote Desktop? ONE MORE UPDATE: Indeed, it was the http proxy I'm sitting behind at work that was causing the issue. An acceptable workaround is to use my VPN connection to bypass the proxy, and I'm in!

• Ubuntu 13.10 on Acer V5-472 with HD 4000

  I have an Acer V5-472 with intel HD4000 graphics chipset and a built-in 1366*768 display. I have installed ubuntu 13.10 amd64 in legacy boot mode with an external monitor. Installation showed no problems, I can boot from HDD and log into my system. The internal display doesn't work and I have to use an external monitor. I have tried the following (found in other threads) to no avail: Setting grub option "acpi_backlight=vendor" or "acpi_osi=Linux" or both. Installing the intel HD drivers for Linux from their homepage. Running in circles, screaming and shouting. The internal display lights up (I can change the brightness with Fn-Left and Fn-Right) but that's all. When I boot, I get a purple splash screen and from then only the external monitor works. I read somewhere that this might be a problem with kernel 3.11? Has anybody ubuntu running on an Acer V5-472? Should I change ubuntu version or use 32-bit instead? In general, how can I get the internal display to work? Edit: The settings-display dialogue shows the internal display correctly with supported resolution of 1366.

• How do I install a different OS on a Compaq Presario cq56 with preinstalled SuSE 11?

  Thing is, I don't have a clue of Linux systems, I usually use WinXP. Bought a notebook with SuSE 11 on it, because I have my XP licence and thought I could install that if I found the chipset drivers for the hardware (which I'm not completely sure I have the right versions of). Then I thought I'd give it a shot with the SuSE, looked nice enough. But I can't get my external hd to work (tried force mount) and the banshee doesn't do anything like playing video. Since that is one of the two main purposes of this notebook, I need to get that to work. Tried downloading VLC player, but that only works with SuSE 11.1 upwards. So I downloaded a SuSE 11.3 and burned the iso. But surprise, no way the notebook would boot from cd. Same with the XP cd (considered setting up a dual boot). And no, I can't get to BIOS to reset to default, either. So I can basically do nothing else than going online with this thing and that's not enough for me (gamer in withdrawal, yikes!). I need at least to get to my firefox profile on the external hd and be able to watch video. Can somebody please help me? I think at this point I'd prefer to install XP and MAYBE the SuSE 11.3 after that. I'm not a native speaker, so please speak plainly, thanks. :) Edit: if this is impossible, could someone please help me with the external hd mount and video playback? Edit: Found out how to boot from cd by now. But still no XP, because I get bluescreen after bluescreen while setup is loading files. I guess it's the missing SATA drivers...
