• Netbook thinks it is a desktop

  Question: Are, and if so what, there packages for download that I can get netbook to understand it is not a desktop and that it is a netbook. Info: I'm running an Acer Aspire One with ubuntu desktop 9.10. I tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix first but it has graphics issues with the aspire one. So I changed to Ubuntu Desktop. It was the only distro (after debian, centOS, Fedora, and Knoppix all failed me) that I managed to get working. The only thing is that it is having issues doing things that a netbook/laptop should be doing. most notably is that it will run it's battery dead if I close the screen and throw it into my back pack. It seems to just stay fully on and runs it's self to death. also it will lock up some times if I close the screen and come back to it 10 or 20 minutes later. It also won't retain volume settings when I reboot, as well as screen brightness. and just a couple of other things that I can't quite put my finger on, but just seem amiss. like I said, Essentially my netbook thinks it is a desktop, how can I fix this? ~N

• Recovering data from mangodb raw files

• Adobe premiere CS5 problem with the display driver

  This error is really hindering our project. I get an error, it started showing-up June 16th 2010. There are no windows updates at the on the same date as the error, other than (Windows Defender) Seems to happen when working with Image overlays. ERROR: "The NVIDIA OpenGL driver detected a problem with the display driver and is unable to continue. The application must close." We opened the side of the case in the possibility there is an over heating problem. Nvidia Driver ver 8.16.11.9175 (nVidia Quadro FX 1700) I am running: Windows 7 x64 Adobe premiere CS5 Production nVidia Quadro FX 1700 (MRGA14L) 4 Gig ram RAID 10 2 750GB drives Duo core 3.0 6MB L2 Cache This is at least three other people that have come across this error: NVidia Forum EVGA Forum NVidia Forum UPDATE: Having the case open did not help. I also installed New Nvidia drivers now I get a different error: *ERROR:*Your hardware configuration does not meet minimum specifications needed to run the application. The application must close. I ran Windows Update and installed all four updates so now I am waiting to see if the error occurs again. Anything beyond this I am out of options.

• File in use when it's really not

  I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit on a Server 2008 network. I am getting a weird issue with an excel document where I open it up one morning, update it, save and close, the next morning I come in, open it up and it says "This file is in use and locked by csmith" which "csmith" is me! So I click on the cancel button, open it up again and it comes up fine. I can edit, save and close with no problem. But then have the same issue the next morning. Another weird thing is that we have a calendar shared in "Public Folders" under Outlook that seems to be having the same issue, which happens to be a calendar made in Excel. Exchange 2010 is installed on the server and the clients are using Exchange 2007. In the instance with the calendar, it will show conflicting edits have been made and you must keep one item or all items. And it shows an edit date of 4/24/2012 and 6/1/2012. But, there were NO edits done on 6/1, just tried opening it. This problem does not occur under my profile, but 2 others. These machines are ALSO running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. We have a mix of Windows 7 and Windows XP machines on our network if that is any help. These issues did not start happening until we migrated from a server running Server 2003 and Exchange 2000, which the new server is running Server 2008 and Exchange 2010 as stated above. Is there something on the server side that is configured wrong?

• Fedora 12 on Vmware network disabled on restore

  I have a fedora 12 guest running on VMWare on windows 7. I use it mainly for the occasional linux dev. Whenever I restart the guest, networking works fine. But if I close the VMware player and save state, the next time I start the image, networking is disabled (red x on the network icon. message saying networking disabled). I can't seem to find a way to restore networking. I have to reboot the guest to get my network access back again. My Ubuntu image doesn't have this problem. I can close the player and when I re run the image, I can pick up where I left off, with all the open firefox windows and application windows as I left them. Fedora saves state, but doesn't seem to enable networking. There is a relevant warning I have seen "SELinux is preventing /sbin/ifconfig "read" access to/var/run/vmware-active-nics." But I am not sure how to solve it. I know fedora isn't officially supported by VMware, but it seems to be working fine for the most part and meeting my needs, except for this one little issue. Any help would be much appreciated.

• ddclient to update namecheap subdomain?

  I have a subdomain that I want to update with ddclient. I configured the ddclient to get the IP from dyndns but it's not updating the subdomain on namecheap. They said to use yourdomain.com as the login instead of my actual domain. Has anyone been able to get namecheap DNS updated with ddclient? I'm running CentOS 6.2 with ddclient 3.7.3. When I run ddclient I get the following. • Restricting Access to Application(s) on Point of Sale system

  I have a customer with two point of sale systems, a few workstations and a Windows 2003 SBS Server. The point of sale systems are typically running QuickBooks Point of Sale and are logged in with a user who has restricted permissions / access (via Group Policy). Occasionally, one of the managers needs to be able to run a few additional applications -- including some accounting software. I have created an additional user for this manager, allowing them to login and access the accounting software. The problem is, it can be problematic to switch users on the system, as QuickBooks takes a few minutes to close (on POSUser) and then reopen (on ManagerUser). If customers are waiting, this slows things down drastically. Since the accounting software is stored on a network drive, it would be easiest if the manager could simply double click something, authenticate against the network drive / domain controller and then the program would launch. When they close the program, the session to the network drive would be lost and the program would no longer be accessible. Is there any easy way to do this? Both users are on a domain and the system is Windows 7. I just don't want to require the user to switch back and forth. In a worst case scenario, they forget to switch back and leave the accounting software wide open.

• Explorer.exe keeps crashing during log in

  I have got a weird problem. My windows 7 has two user accounts (both are administrator). I can log in to one account and do all sort of work. But whenever I try to log in to other account, it shows a blank screen and a messagebox pops up with "windows explorer has stopped working". I can not run any program using runas command (from good profile) too. The task manager and runas programs all show same problem signature. I read the similar question and followed all the steps, but no luck. Later, I viewed the event log and found that, explorer.exe could not access a file. I checked the location but the file is there. The actual message is: Windows cannot access the file C:\Users\testuser\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Caches\{AFBF9F1A-8EE8-4C77-AF34-C647E37CA0D9}.1.ver0x0000000000000020.db for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Windows Explorer because of this error. The question is, how can I resolve this issue? Should I just delete the file or replace it with another one to stop explorer.exe from crashing? offtopic: What is the content of this file and why it is necessary?

• How do I find my missing songs from last.fm?

  My disk failed with all my music with it, lots of them. But luckily, I scrobbled every song to last.fm. I am looking for a way to scan my disk for my songs and check last.fm and tell me which songs are missing from my disk that are present on last.fm. So to recap: I would need to log into my last.fm account and compile a list of all the songs I have scrobbled and then scan my computer for missing songs. Is there a program or script that does this? I don't mind it being a shell script even. Edit: I know this is possible because I came close to this a little time ago. I created a PHP script (web page) that got all my songs through Last.fm API and then went through my files on disk and read their id3 tag. I got very close: the program showed missing songs, but there were many small issues (id3 reading was buggy, tags had different data, etc.) that required more programming time that I didn't have.

• Comparing 2 (or 3 Files If Possible) "Line By Line"

  I want to find out the differences of 2 (or 3 files if possible) line by line. Diff utils can do this, however it gives inaccurate results. Because, 2 files have exact number of lines which is "134". But diff gives me "Added Lines" and "Removed Lines". However this is wrong, they have exact the same number of lines, there is no added or removed lines. The text files which I want to find differences of them, have only numbers written, maybe that's why that algortihm fails. I couldn't find any option to prevent that, however I may be wrong, I mean there should be an option for that, but again, I couldn't find. • Outlook 2010 on WinXP runs once then refuses to run again until reboot

  Since I installed Outlook 2010 on a new machine (WinXP Pro SP3) a couple months back I have had an issue that is quite annoying: If I close Outlook then attempt to restart it I get a small pop-up saying only: "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook". I found one workaround, but not a terribly practical one: reboot. If I reboot then launch Outlook, it opens fine. Here is what I know: Since I can run Outlook just fine after a reboot, I do not see that a system restore, an OS reinstall, or the like would help. I tried "outlook.exe /resetnavpane" and "outlook.exe /safe" but those give the same error. There are no entries in the event log. There is no instance of Outlook appearing in the process list once I close the program, so it does not seem to be an alias for "outlook is already running". As far as I have found, my situation is unique among reports of similar incidents: I have uncovered no other reports saying Outlook would run fine the first launch or that a reboot would again allow it to run. Suggestions?

  I just transferred my data directory (of Mongo 1.6.5) to a new server and installed Mongo 2.0 on it. I set the data directory path and did sudo server mongod restart.   I used to be able to send emails using a gmail account & sendmail configured using one of the guides on the Internet, for example: http://appgirl.net/blog/configuring-sendmail-to-relay-through-gmail-smtp/ This is a small server and I've recently moved it to a different house. And sendmail has stop working. The only thing different in the network setup is a new router. • Proper end of day sequence to maintain monitor config

  I've got an HP EliteBook 6930p that travels from home, where it is connected to individual cables, and work where there is a docking station. At both locations I have an external monitor as the secondary monitor and like to have the laptop screen as the primary, i.e. with the task bar. At the end of the day I close the laptop, which is supposed to set it to standby. When I get home I plug in the power cord and the external monitor cord and open the computer. When heading into work I close the computer and unplug everything. Inevitably when I open the computer at the new location the monitors are reversed, i.e. the primary, task bar display is on the external monitor and the laptop shows the secondary, even though when i click identify the laptop has the 1. I then have to disable the secondary display, switch the primary to the laptop and re-enable the secondary. I've tried locking the computer before closing and occasionally that works to keep the setup in place but not always. Any suggestions for how to keep the config in place during transport? ed

I want to eventually remove Windows 7 and just run it from a VM within Linux Mint, but I want to make sure that I like the Mint before going all in. I ran Linux Mint on a VM inside Windows for a while, enjoyed it, and never had any issues with it. Since installing on my hard drive it has started freezing every 5-10 minutes, and the only way to get it back is to either power down, or close the lid and reopen once it sleeps. I've also tried running Ubuntu on dual boot in the past, and while it never froze, the battery life was terrible, and the fan was constantly running. I'm experiencing the same battery/fan problem with Mint, which doesn't make sense to me, as Linux should be lighter on the CPU than windows. If I had to guess I'd say it's probably a driver thing, with my video card or fan or something. My battery life in Windows is ~2 hours and its about 40 minutes in Linux. At this point, that is even if my laptop doesn't freeze before then. On a less important note, I also have an intel Centrino 6150 WiMax card that I'd like to be able to use, but that won't register on the Linux system either. I have tried downloading drivers for both of these, but neither have solved my problems. I'm definitely getting frustrated and am getting close to giving up on Linux even though I dread working on a Windows machine.

• Win 7 x64 explorer.exe stops responding on copy/paste

  Few months ago I changed my Win7 orb using this software. But it changed only the explorer.exe in C:\Windows. To solve that, I copied explorer.exe from there to C:\Windows\system32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (Probably a bad idea). Things were working fine until a few days ago, it started giving me problems while copying. Sometimes, when I copy/paste, It works fine but sometimes it stays on that dialog box which looks like it is doing pre-copying things like counting number of files/file size etc. But its not. It stays on that screen forever. Now if I try to close it, title changes to cancelling but rest stays the same. If I try to close it too many times, explorer.exe crashes. And its not related to file-size. It may crash for 4Mb file and work fine for 10Gb file but some other time, it'll do the opposite. Is there any way to reset my explorer.exe and Is this because of explorer.exe or something else PS: I forgot to take backup of explorer.exe. PS2: I didn't install any software or downloaded anything that could harm my computer. EDIT I tried System Restore and SFC /scannow but they didn't help.

  Hi, I've been having a problem for a while now with VMWare Workstaion. (Originally with 6.5, but now with 7.0 and 7.0.1 too). The problem occurs when I choose to shut down a guest. VMWare itself seems to hang. If I choose to shut down a guest that's opened full screen, and during the process I minimise the screen to work on other applications in the host, often (not all the time) when I return to the guest I have a 'greyed out' screen and the system becomes unresponsive. The host O/S still seems to be working, but I am unable to switch to other applications. (I can bring up the taskbar on the host and 'see' other applications and even switch to them, but VMWare still stays 'on top' being unresponsive). I can not terminate VMWare even when windows says that the application has become unresponsive and gives me the option to terminate. VMWare stays on top, and I'm forced to either shutdown, or log off and log back on in order to regain control of my computer. This happens with both Windows 7 and Windows Vista guest operating systems (32 bit), and I have had it happen on multiple host machines, and multiple guest machines too. Current Host: Windows 7 64 bit, 8GB Ram, 500GB HDD, i7 Processor. I have been searching for more than 6 months for a solution but have found none, so finally decided to post here. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem (+or even how to minimize the VM so I can at least access any other applications and save work before forcing a logoff / reboot+) would be extrememly handly. If I know the correct keystrokes to save and close in an application on the host I can do this by task-switching to the desired app to save and close successfully, but I can't see what I'm doing because VMWare Workstation is still on-top 'greyed' out. • Menu command stuck on screen

  For some reason, periodically when I select a menu command, the command label gets "stuck" on the screen and won't go away. I can close all open applications, including whichever one I was using when it got stuck, but it still won't go away. In the screenshot below, I opened an new instance of IE just to show how the label stays on top. The label was not created by this instance of IE. Edit with the source: The label that gets stuck is the first menu command I select in IE. If a label is already stuck, a new one does not get stuck (regardless of which instance(s) of IE are involved). Based on this knowledge, I now just open IE on my secondary monitor, carefully open the context menu so the Properties command is in the bottom corner, and click it. This is not a solution... The label never moves and is transparent to mouse input (if I click it, it's as if I clicked the item behind it). The label does not go away if I close all running applications. I haven't tried stopping services or closing system tray items like Live Mesh. The label does go away if I change the screen resolution and then change it back. Any ideas how I can stop this from happening? It's happened a half dozen times since yesterday and it's becoming quite disrupting to my work. Obviously I added the circle in MS Paint. That part isn't stuck. ;)

• Google Chrome is running my system out of memory

  I am running Windows 7 x64 with 12GB of RAM I often have multiple windows and a ton of tabs open. I use the extension Session Buddy to restore all my windows and tabs once the memory gets too high. So my 12gb of ram will get up to around 93% used because of Chrome, now I can close chrome down and restore the same amount of windows and tabs and it will only use about 25% of memory, it then over time increases back up to the 90% zone after several hours. It seems that when I close tabs, instead of freeing that memory up, it doesn't so that is why the huge increase of memory usage as new tabs are opened and closed it just adds up, this sounds like a huge bug in chrome. Just for an example I just re-booted my system, I only have 1 window with 4 tabs open and in the task manager, it shows 29 chrome.exe processes I then killed all chrome processes and opened a chrome window with just 1 tab, it made 27 chrome.exe processes. Is this an issue that others have? More importantly, is there a fix? UPDATE I just read that each plugin and extension creates a chrome.exe process, I then couunted 24 extensions so that helps explain a portion of the large processes. Still not sure about memory not being freed up though!

• Netbook thinks it is a desktop

  Question: Are, and if so what, there packages for download that I can get netbook to understand it is not a desktop and that it is a netbook. Info: I'm running an Acer Aspire One with ubuntu desktop 9.10. I tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix first but it has graphics issues with the aspire one. So I changed to Ubuntu Desktop. It was the only distro (after debian, centOS, Fedora, and Knoppix all failed me) that I managed to get working. The only thing is that it is having issues doing things that a netbook/laptop should be doing. most notably is that it will run it's battery dead if I close the screen and throw it into my back pack. It seems to just stay fully on and runs it's self to death. also it will lock up some times if I close the screen and come back to it 10 or 20 minutes later. It also won't retain volume settings when I reboot, as well as screen brightness. and just a couple of other things that I can't quite put my finger on, but just seem amiss. like I said, Essentially my netbook thinks it is a desktop, how can I fix this? ~N
