• Using Google Map Headers (YM4R) on Heroku

  I have the following at the top of my view: <%= GMap.header %> Heroku is giving me an ActionView::TemplateError on that line.... this works on my own machine but not on Heroku.... why is that? Is there something about Heroku that doesn't allow?   Hi, I am trying to migrate to MVC from conventional n tier applications. I am very much used to creating websites in the regular manner. But i find it difficult to adapt to MVC environemnt. Suppose there is a table products. I jus want to display the table data in a web page. I hav ROR installed and working. I have created a project by giving rails_apps rails demo The command prompt created some folders inside a folder called demo. Though i have read one or two tutorials i am not exactly clear about the working or the cycle of MVC. Can anyone please give some basic idea. I have managed to skim through the initial pages of Agile Web Development Through Rails. Also, please give me some usefull links on the net. That would really help me.

• Map a struts2 action result to a controller instead of a jsp

  Hello, I'm working on on a site built using struts2. The vast majority of our targets generate xml, so mapping the result to a jsp page makes sense. A couple of our targets actually generated binaries. I'm wondering if there is a convenient way to say that the result should come from a servlet/controller instead of a jsp. Obviously this could be done by modifying the web.xml so the struts filter doesn't apply to those targets and mapping those targets as servlets, but this is non-ideal. Currently, the struts filter applies to the entire site, and we would like to keep it that way. Ideas? Thanks!

  Hi , I am working on extracting Parts Of speech (POS) using xml documents and I have a englishPCFG.ser.gz file which is used in extracting POS on xml files. I cannot send this .gz file as input in HDFS directory, but my program uses it for parsing xml files. The file is in my local directory. I am getting "File Not Found" error when I run my mapreduce program. How can i make it available to mapper? I tried placing the file in HDFS where my xml files are present. I also tried adding it in .jar along with class files but not luck. I tried to change the hdfs-default.xml with entry to local directory, still doesnt work. Please let me know how to make mapper read this file? Thank you,

  Hello. I have 4 classes, that describe state diagram. Node, Edge, ComponentOfNode, ComponentOfEdge. ComponentOfEdge compounds from ComponentsOfNode. Node can have 0..n outgoing edges. Edge can have only 2 nodes. Edge should be able to offer ComponentOfNode, but only from nodes that Edge has, in form ComponentOfEdge. The user can change ComponentsOfNode. I need this change spreads to all Edge. Hw to do it? I expect the observer should be used. Can you give me example in pseudocode please?

• MVC + Repository Pattern - Still depends on Data Model?

  I've started a project for school in which I am using ASP.NET MVC 2 + LINQ2SQL, and a business layer so my UI doesnt interact with the DB directly. My question is this: In my MVC project, when bringing up views and passing around data, I still have to include my Data project for access to the classes in my Linq2Sql project. Is this correct? Example: Controller: ClassesRepository cr = new ClassesRepository(); // this is from my Business project Class classToEdit = cr.GetByClassId(id); // "Class" is from my data project I still have to reference the Class class in my linq2sql data project - shouldn't my UI be completely independent of my data layer? Or maybe I'm going about this all wrong.

But maybe there is way to do it in one line expression?

  I have two strings: $first = '/this/is/a/string'; $second = '/this/:param1/a/:param2'; And I'm trying to get this: $params = array('param1' => 'is', 'param2' => 'string'); But getting from point a to b is proving more than my tired brain can handle at the moment. Anything starting with a ':' in the second string defines a variable name/position. There can be any number of variables in $second which need to be extracted from $first.   I am about to start a new winforms data entry application, it already has the database designed which I am comfortable with. I was going to use LINQ2SQL to access the tables to keep things type safe but am now wondering about design patterns, something I am just getting into. Since LINQ is giving me objects to use should I still create classes in between to hold the validation code and helper methods or should these just go in with the UI? It just seems I will end up with classes sat in between with little code which will cause the UI classes to have code just getting and setting values in the intermediate class and returning from validation to flag errors... Any good reading on this? Should I consider the entity framework (or similar) instead?

There are 2 functions: List<A1> getListA1(){...} List<A2> getListA2(){...} Now I want to do something similar to both A1 and A2 in another function public void process(List<A>){...} If I want to pass the instance of either ListA1 or ListA2, of course the types doesn't match because the compiler doesn't allow the coercion from List< A1 to List< A. I can't do something like this: List<A1> listA1 = getListA1(); List<A> newList = (List<A>)listA1; //this is not allowed. So what is the best approach to the process()? Is there any way to do it in a universal way rather than write the similar code to both List and List?

• What is a good "Error Checking" Pattern (Java)?

  I'll explain what I mean by input error checking. Say you have a function doSomething(x). If the function completes successfully doSomething does something and returns nothing. However, if there are errors I'd like to be notified. That is what I mean by error checking. I'm looking for, in general, the best way to check for errors. I've thought of the following solutions, each with a potential problem. Flag error checking. If doSomething(x) completes successfully return null. Otherwise, it returns a boolean or an error string. Problem: Side effects. Throwing an exception. Throw an exception if doSomething(x) encounters an error. Problem: If you are performing error checking for parameters only, throwing an IllegalArgumentExceptionseems inappropriate. Validating input prior to function call. If the error checking is only meant for the parameters of the function, then you can call a validator function before calling the doSomething(x) function. Problem: What if a client of the class forgets to call the validator function before calling doSomething(x)? I often encounter this problem and any help or a point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

• Fitting place names into map shapes

  I'm drawing shapes using GDI+ using a list of lat/lon floats, and I need to place the name of the place within the borders of the polygon. Simply centering the text in the bounding rectangle doesn't work for irregular shapes. I have the text and the font so I can get the size of the rectangle that the text will need to fit in, but at that point I'm stuck. This seems like a common problem that all mapping software solves, as well as the kind of thing you would find in an algorithm or computer graphics textbook. So, given a list of floats for a polygon and a rectangle, is there a way to get the best possible point to place the text, using: 1) GDI+; 2) SQL Server Geospatial; or 3) c# code (or c, pseudocode, etc)
