• Linux for web Development [closed]

  I usually used windows for developing desktop applications, but recently I've almost abandoned desktop apps and have been doing web development so much. I'm using many web technologies and languages, especially Ruby on Rails, and I'm facing too many problems using windows. Besides, I personally want to move to Linux. So, what's the most helpful and comfortable Linux distribution for web development? I have a short but handy experience using Ubuntu desktop, so I'm familiar with the generics of Linux (like -as a simple example- using the command line), and I don't have any problem in getting used to any distribution (I know I may face some difficulties, but again I have no problem), I only want the best one for web development (especially rails!!). If the question doesn't belong to this site, I'll be glad to migrate it to the appropriate one.

• Subclipse plugin doesn't work in Eclipse?

  Hi, even though there was no error when installing Subclipse in Eclipse. I won't see the SVN perspective at all? I have tried with "Eclipse Classic 3.5.1" and with "Eclipse for PHP Developers". After downloading and unzipping the packages I used Eclipse's "Install Software" mechanism to install Subclipse 1.6.x. I followed the steps described here: http://www3.math.tu-berlin.de/jreality/mediawiki/index.php/Subclipse_installation_in_eclipse_galileo. But after Eclipse re-starts I don't get any SVN Repository perspective? I have tried to un-install/re-install all the software components many times now. Finally after 3 hours of trying I am giving up. Does anyone have any hint what I am missing? Thanks! Peter

• Five Things Learned at the BSR Conference in San Francisco on Nov 2nd-4th

  The BSR Conference 2011—“Redefining Leadership”—held from Nov 2nd to Nov 4th in San Francisco, with Oracle as one of the main sponsors, saw senior business executives, civil society representatives, and other experts from around the world gathering to share strategies and insights on the future of sustainability. The general conference sessions kicked off on November 2nd with a plenary address by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. Other sessions were presented by CEOs of the caliber of Carl Bass (Autodesk), Brian Dunn (Best Buy), Carlos Brito (Anheuser-Busch InBev) and Ofra Strauss (Strauss Group). Here are five key highlights from the conference: 1.      The main leadership challenge is integrating sustainability into core business functions and overcoming short-termism. The “BSR GlobeScan State of Sustainable Business Poll 2011” - a survey of nearly 500 business leaders from 300 member companies - shows that 84% of respondents are optimistic that global businesses will embrace CSR/sustainability as part of their core strategies and operations in the next five years but consider integrating sustainability into their core business functions the key challenge. It is still difficult for many companies that are committed to the sustainability agenda to find investors that understand the long-term implications and as Al Gore said “Many companies are given the signal by the investors that it is the short term results that matter and that is a terribly debilitating force in the market.” 2.      Companies are required to address increasing compliance requirements and transparency in their supply chain, especially in relation with conflict minerals legislation and water management. The Dodd-Frank legislation, OECD guidelines, and the upcoming Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules require companies to monitor upstream the sourcing of tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold, but given the complexity of this issue companies need to collaborate and partner with peer companies in their industry as well as in other industries to understand how to address conflict minerals in their supply chains. The Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs’ (IPE) China Water Pollution Map enables the public to access thousands of environmental quality, discharge, and infraction records released by various government agencies. Empowered with this information, the public has the opportunity to place greater pressure on polluting companies to comply with environmental standards and create solutions to improve their performance. 3.      A new standard for reporting on supply chain greenhouse gas emissions is available. The New “Scope 3” Supply Chain Greenhouse Gas Inventory Standard, released on October 4th 2011, is the only international greenhouse gas emissions standard that accounts for the full lifecycle of a company’s products. It provides a framework for companies to account for indirect emissions outside of energy use, such as transportation, manufacturing, and distribution, and it incorporates both upstream and downstream impacts of a product. With key investors now listing supplier vulnerability to rising energy prices and disruptions of service as a key concern, greenhouse gas (GHG) management isn’t just for leading companies but a necessity for any business. 4.      Environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) reporting is becoming increasingly important to investors and other stakeholders. While European investors have traditionally driven the ESG agenda, U.S. investors are increasingly including ESG data in their analyses. This trend will likely increase as stakeholders continue to demand that an ESG lens be applied to their investments. Investors are increasingly looking to partner on sustainability, as they see the benefits of ESG providing significant returns on investment. 5.      Software companies are offering an increasing variety of solutions to help drive changes and measure performance internally, in supply chains, and across peer companies. The significant challenge is how to integrate different software systems to facilitate decision-making based on a holistic understanding of trade-offs. Jon Chorley, Chief Sustainability Officer and Vice President, Supply Chain Management Product Strategy at Oracle was a panelist in the “Trends in Sustainability Software” session and commented that, “How we think about our business decisions really comes down to how we think about cost. And as long as we don’t assign a cost to things that have an environmental impact or social impact, then we make decisions based on incomplete information. • Discovering Assets on Multiple Subnets

  I saw this question recently, about making discovery work: "I am attempting to discover a group of ILOMs which seem to be on a different subnet than their hosts. When I try to discover the ILOMs, Ops Center can't find them. Is it a requirement that the ILOM and its host should be on the same subnet?" The short answer is no, related assets don't have to be on the same subnet for you to discover them. The correlation between related assets doesn't depend on them being on the same subnet. What's likely going on, if you're running into similar issues, is that the subnet where you're trying to discover systems needs to be associated with a Proxy Controller that can reach it. You can go here to see how to associate a network with a Proxy Controller. Once the network is associated with a Proxy Controller, you should be able to discover and manage assets on it.

• What is the etiquette in negotiating payment for a software development job

  The reason I'm taking a general business question and localize it to software development is that I'm curious as to whether there are certain trends/etiquette/nuances that are typical to our industry. For example, I can imagine two different attitudes employers may generally have to payment negotiations: 1) we'll give you the best offer so we can't really be flexible about it because we already pretty much gave you everything we can give you, or 2) we'll give him an average offer and give in to a better one if forced to. If you try to play hard ball in the first attitude it'll probably cost you the job because you ask for more than they can give you, however if you don't insist on better payment in the second one you'll get a worse offer. In short, when applying to a typical job in our industry what are the typical attitudes from employers on the offers they give, what is the correct way to ask for a better payment, do these things differ between different types of companies (for example startups vs well entrenched companies), and how do these things differ between different kinds of applicants (graduate vs student)?

  I have a dedicated server and a mydomain.com (bought from a hosting company). I want to host a website from my dedicated server with the domain mydomain.com i.e. when I enter mydomain.com from browser it should point to the IP(let's say X.X.X.X) of dedicated server(and a particular folder inside it). I have some following queries: In Server I know I need to edit some of the files (like: host or hostname file) in the server but I do not know what exact file I need to edit. How to add a Site enable or Site available in apache2 ? In Hosting Company control Panel Which records to add (A or cname or anyother)? Where Should I add DNS(in dedicated server section or domain name section)? How it is going to affect the behaviour of the domain? in short the question is: How the virtual host works & how to add DNS?

• Best keyboard drawer for programmers?

  I'm a programmer with pretty severe neck problems. I program with three monitors, and I've found that my desk's short depth causes me to have to rotate my neck too much to see the "wing" screens. I can't get a deeper desk due to space restrictions. I'm looking for a keyboard drawer that can be installed onto a desk. However, I like the height of the keyboard on the desk. I'd like a drawer that is extremely low-profile/slim. My keyboard is less than 1" tall, so it'll fit pretty much anywhere. My ideal product would slide out from under my desk and "pop up" so that its surface is even with the desk. Does anything slim and nice like this exist? I'll even consider replacing the desk if a desk exists with this built-in.

• Completely uninstall/reinstall Eclipse and add support for php and jquery

  I have been using Eclipse a short while and it worked perfectly until I started downloading different plugins that I didn't really need. Now I get a ton of different errors and can't even open a php file. What I want to do is just to remove Eclipse and reinstall it, but that was much harder that I first thought. I marked every eclipse package in synaptic packaged manager and selected complete removal, I even deleted the .meta folder in my working dictionary, but when I installed eclipse again. It was as if I hadn't removed anything. Same errors from the plug-ins I had installed before. Seems like when you install something in linux, files are stored all over the place. Makes real hard do remove anything. So how do I COMPLETELY remove Eclipse, reinstall it and add support for php and jquery. Thanks.

• Why was Objective-C popularity so sudden on TIOBE index?

  I'd like to ask a question that is pretty similar to the one being asked here, but for Objective-C. According to TIOBE rankings, the rise of popularity of Objective-C is unprecedented. This is obviously tied to the popularity of Apple products, but I feel like this might be a hasty conclusion to make since it doesn't really explain the stagnant growth of Java (1. There are way more Android O/S devices distributed worldwide, 2. Java is used in virtually every platform one can imagine) Now I haven't programmed in Objective-C at all, but I'd like to ask if there are any unique features or advantages about the language itself compared to other prevalent languages such as C++, Java, C#, Python etc. What are some other factors that contributed into the rise of Objective-C in this short span of time?

• Architecting multi-model multi-DB ASP.NET MVC solution

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 4 solution that I'm putting together, leveraging IoC and the repository pattern using Entity Framework 5. I have a new requirement to be able to pull data from a second database (from another internal application) which I don't have control over. There is no API available unfortunately for the second application and the general pattern at my place of work is to go direct to the database. I want to maintain a consistent approach to modeling the domain and use entity framework to pull the data out, so thus far I have used Entity Framework's database first approach to generate a domain model and database context over the top of this. However, I've become a little stuck on how to include the second domain model in the application. I have a generic repository which I've now moved out to a common DataAccess project, but short of creating two distinct wrappers for the generic repository (so each can identify with a specific database context), I'm struggling to see how I can elegantly include multiple models?

  It’s been half a year since my last post.  My how time flies.  My new years resolution is to post more frequently.  After a short stint at a local company, which shall remain nameless, I’m back at Veracity.  Overall, Veracity Solutions is one of the best companies I’ve worked for, and I’m relieved to be back. So, this year, I’m going to do the following on my blog: Finish the Agile posts I started (IN MAY!!!). Blog about some code for a logging helper to make debug logging easier. Blog some resharper snippets to help with logging. Blog a Unity Container helper to allow you to specify dependency mappings with attributes on interfaces. • Transferring Email to Google Apps - Timing

  I did a site for a client a few months back. Hosting & email was setup through Dreamhost VPS. Hosting has not been an issue, but email has become increasingly dodgy. Long story short, they want to transfer to Google Apps for Biz. They already have the mailboxes setup - they are on macs so they will be transferring using the gmail email importer for mac - my question is this - should they transfer their domain over first or their emails? I'm a developer so I have no problem changing their DNS settings, but I am not an IT manager type by any stretch so I am a bit in the dark about process - my proposed process was: Delete any junk/deleted mail from current environment Backup email locally copy emails to google apps via importer Switch domain and update mac mail settings It seems that doing the domain first would be best but I don't know if that is possible. I have been trying to find a generic checklist, but i haven't been able to.

• Printing multiple pages per sheet doesn't work

  In Ubuntu 12.04, I added a network printer which I had previously used without any problems on a different machine (with the same release of Ubuntu). Now, with the default generic driver installed, printing multiple pages per sheet from evince doesn't work properly. If I select 2 per sheet, be it long or short edge, it always prints 4. Why is this? It used to happen with non-pdf documents in the past, like from a browser. My workaround was to print to pdf file and then print the pdf itself. Now I'm clueless... Edit: the same happens with a different network printer, in which I installed the driver specific to its particular model.

• How to revoke gnupg public key without private key?

  Long story short I have an key generated with seahorse and mistakenly deleted it from my system. I do remember passphrase but I don't have this key anywhere on my system. Scanned trough Ask Ubuntu but couldn't find any aplicabile solution on similar issue. However public key is still updated on keyring servers and I would like to revoke it. Since I have no revocation certificate and I can't get hold of private key (only public key is available from keyservers which I imported to seahorse) I have no idea how to accomplish it. Spent some time searching for solution acros net, various manuals and so on, but so far no luck. gpg --list-secret-keys - returns no output at all. gpg --list-keys - returns public key info gpg --gen-revoke *user-id* - returns - gpg: secret key *user-id* not found: eof gpg (GnuPG) version 1.4.11. Anyone able to suggest a solution?

• Keeping an enum and a table in sync

  I'm making a program that will post data to a database, and I've run into a pattern that I'm sure is familiar: A short table of most-likely (very strongly likely) fixed values that serve as an enum. So suppose the following table called Status: Status Id Description -------------- 0 Unprocessed 1 Pending 2 Processed 3 Error In my program I need to determine a status Id for another table, or possibly update a record with a new status Id. I could hardcode the status Id's in an enum and hope no one ever changes the database. Or I could pre-fetch the values based on the description (thus hardcoding that instead). What would be the correct approach to keep these two, enum and table, synced?
