• Remote Desktop advice

  Coming from Windows, so that is what my expectations are based on. I have a Ubuntu desktop edition instance running as a virtual machine on a server. I would like to use it as my primary open source dev environment but the VNC tools I have used don't seem to be as rich as "Remote Desktop Connection" in Windows. The two things that are missing for me: connecting/logging into a non-console user sessions dynamically resizing the graphical resolution based on the size of the remote desktop window device sharing (USB devices plugged into client shared with remote) Is there an appropriate client that I can run on Windows to connect to my ubuntu dev instance that provides these capabilities?

So I wonder if I buy a domain via a American provider or host my site at on VPS in American.Would they force to ban my domain or vps because of piracy? • kernel panic - diagnosis?

  I'm having a kernel panic problem - my machine will run for hours, maybe all day and then have a panic attack. I have no idea how to interpret the output, but here's a picture of what's left on the screen when it happens: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/13279067/photo.JPG (I can't post images yet) I've looked through the logs but didn't find anything obvious - I'm still learning though so I've probably missed something. • YouSendIt Alternative?

  Looking for a reasonably priced alternative to YouSendIt's exorbitant pricing for an embedded, unbranded (i.e. no "Uploads by SomeCompany" or at the very least, discrete, subtle co-branding) file upload solution for my client's print shop Website. To do what we want to do with YouSendIt, we're looking at a corporate account of $995 USD plus $29.99 USD monthly fee, that is only sold pro-rated, so you have to buy the entire year's worth. To me, this is just unacceptable considering the commodity pricing of storage and bandwidth nowadays. For data, we're looking at roughly 10MB per upload, with perhaps 250-1000 uploads per month, with transient data storage of no more than 30 days (and more than likely 1-2 business days) for a total of 10 GB transfer (upload) and 10 GB transfer (download, to the print shop) at the very max each month. Any ideas? Everything I've found through searching seems to be geared more towards personal file sharing and not for embedding into Websites. Thanks

  Last week I started desktop sharing using krfb. Since I continue last session, this program keep on starting again. Two days ago I noticed messages poping up saying something like "rejecting uninvited connection from (some ip)", but today I figured it might be because of this and I was right. The krfb was running in the background. Hence the question. How safe is ubuntu? Should I expect someone to connect to my computer and erase everything I got on disk? EDIT To extend my question : how safe it is comparing to other OSs (windows, mac,...)? How safe it is comparing to other distros?

  I have been studying design patterns and came accross the fly weight pattern. I have been trying to see opportunities to use the pattern in my applications but I am having trouble seeing how to use it. Also, what are some signs that a fly weight pattern is being used when I read other peoples code? According to the definition it says: Use sharing to support large numbers of fine-grained objects efficiently. If I read it right Dictionaries and Hashtables could be instances of fly weights is this correct? Thanks in advance.

  I am using ubuntu 12.04 on my notebook and my primary internet connection is reliance netconnect. I want to share it on my android smartphone, but have no idea about sharing usb modem on linux. I was able to share the same on wondows 7 using the software provided by the notebook manufacturer. Again it's my bad luck that the manufacturer(Samsung) does not provides any driver or software for notebook for linux os they only provide it for windows os, but still some of the features work same as on windows without any driver or software. Please help me.

  I have Samsung 530U4C. How can I configure 3-finger gestures to work? Choosing next photo using 3 finger "scrool" worked in Windows 7. If I use synclient TapButton3=2 I may use it as medium mouse button, but there's problem: it gets cancelled after reboot, and as I read over the Internet, sometime else. Moreover, it would be great to see all gestures my laptop support and configure them all as I need. • Boot screen appears to be asking a question but garbled

  I'm running 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Kernel 3.2.0-32 w/ GNOME 3.4.2 I perused the prior questions/answers and did not find exactly the same problem, I am concerned that AUTOFSCK, Grub or some other critical event that needs some attention ? Any idea on how to get my video clean during boot? Once I get past the boot screen the video driver/card, etc is performing beautifully ! • How to have the game world get rendered on just a part of the screen?

  I am implementing a game on both Desktop and Android. The Desktop version will just rely on the keyboard to handle the user input on the game screen, whilst the Android one will have to have a set of buttons placed in a bar at the bottom of the game screen, using a Stage. Consequently, I am expecting the game world to take up the entire space available on the Desktop screen, whilst on Android it should expand to the entire width of the screen, and to the screen height minus the height of the buttons bar I've mentioned. What would be an appropriate approach of handling space sharing between the game world and the buttons bar? Thank you.

• Add closure after concatenating files or keep one for each separate file?

  At the moment every javasrcipt file in our project includes closure wrapper. Before deploying all files are concatenated and minimized. And i'm asking myself, do we really need all that closures OR one closure added after concatenation will do the job. I can see only one reason not to do that - the variable we are sharing between files will get in the global namespace. But there is no conflict so is don't see any problem. The real question is what other cons may be? Or more generally what approach is better - one closure or many?

  I am setting up a personal website and I would like to be able to share certain files with friends (e.g. photo albums or documents). Of course, each of the files should only be accessible to certain people, for example with a password or a private address. I would like to have a simple system, easy to maintain. I'm quite sure that Wordpress would let me know do something but keeping a Wordpress installation just for sharing a few files per month seems too much work. I am thinking of using the Apache capabilities for folder or file password protecting. Is this the best idea? Or would it be better just to block the directory navigation so that only people with the full path for each of the files can download them? Thanks!

• How to setup complete file access and control on a network

  I have a media server running ubuntu 12.04 and I want it setup so that any PC on the network (windows etc) has complete access to all files, folders etc with read, write, edit, copy to, copy from permissions. No need for security (IE no password or user name, just select it on the network and start editing). I have samba installed and personal file sharing is enabled but my windows PC cannot see it on the network. I already set up another server as I described but unfortunately I can't remember how or where I found the guides for it. Any on know of a guide that covers what I want?
