• Collision Detection (Ground & Slopes) in 2D Platform Game using Pygame Rects

  Hi, First off, I am not after any instructions on logic for collision detection; I get it. What I am trying to work out is the least complicated way to do this with Pygame using Sprites & Rects. I want to be able to check collisions for the Player against ground, walls & slopes. In theory it is quite straight forward, but I'm having difficulty because it seems like you cannot do this with one Rect. One Rect is simple enough to get you collisions in the X plane against walls. The same Rect could be used also be used in the Y plane against solids, but not with slopes - since with the collision routines in Pygame it checks the whole Rect (or mask), rather than perhaps just the bottom middle of the Rect. It seems in addition you need to have a number of "sprites" to check collisions with, that are 1x1 pixel in various places around the Player. What's the easiest way to do this, without having a bunch of 3, 4, or more separate "collision pixels" to check against slopes? Geoff

• Ignore all folders with a certain name in SVN (subversion), how to?

  I am fairly new to Subversion and was wondering how exactly to ignore all folders by a specific name. From what I have read, I think I need to use the svn:ignore function, but I have no clue on how to actually do this. Some places mention a config file.. some say command prompt. I have my subversion repo set up on a windows 2008 server. I tried to go to command prompt and type svn:ignore name but that didnt work. The tutorial I used to set up my repo (with apache 2.2) had me create an etc folder in c:/. There I have subversion.conf, svn-acl and svn-auth-file. My subversion.conf file includes this: <Location /btp> DAV svn SVNPath C:/Files/Work/Repositories/btp AuthType Basic AuthName "By The Pixel Repo" AuthUserFile c:/etc/svn-auth-file Require valid-user AuthzSVNAccessFile c:/etc/svn-acl </Location> The client I use for my development machines is tortoisesvn. • Android: Calculator on showing 0 immediately after the dot

  I am now working on a calculator, and everything works fine except for decimal places. The calculator contains 2 displays actually, one is called fakedisplay for actual operations, and one is called Display, for presenting the desired format, ie adding commas. When pressing 12345.678, Display will follow fakedisplay and present as 12,345.678, but if i press 12345.009, the fakedisplay will work normally as 12345.009, but the Display stuck as 12,345 until 9 is pressed, and at that time it will show 12,345.009 normally. However, it is strange that when the user presses 0, there is no response, and until pressing 9, 009 will then immediately append. I know this arise from the parsing code, but based on this, how could I amend the following code? I really cannot think of any solution... • A question of style/readability regarding the C# "using" statement

  I'd like to know your opinion on a matter of coding style that I'm on the fence about. I realize there probably isn't a definitive answer, but I'd like to see if there is a strong preference in one direction or the other. I'm going through a solution adding using statements in quite a few places. Often I will come across something like so: { log = new log(); log.SomeProperty = something; // several of these log.Connection = new OracleConnection("..."); log.InsertData(); // this is where log.Connection will be used ... // do other stuff with log, but connection won't be used again } where log.Connection is an OracleConnection, which implements IDisposable. The neatnik in me wants to change it to: { log = new log(); using (OracleConnection connection = new OracleConnection("...")) { log.SomeProperty = something; log.Connection = conn; log.InsertData(); ... } } But the lover of brevity and getting-the-job-done-slightly-faster wants to do: { log = new log(); log.SomeProperty = something; using (log.Connection = new OracleConnection("...")) log.InsertData(); ... } For some reason I feel a bit dirty doing this. Do you consider this bad or not? If you think this is bad, why? If it's good, why?

• C++: how to build my own utility library?

  I am starting to be proficient enough with C++ so that I can write my own C++ based scripts (to replace bash and PHP scripts I used to write before). I find that I am starting to have a very small collection of utility functions and sub-routines that I'd like to use in several, otherwise unrelated C++ scripts. I know I am not supposed to reinvent the wheel and that I could use external libraries for some of the utilities I'm creating for myself. However, it's fun to create my own utility functions, they are perfectly tailored to the job I have in mind, and it's for me a large part of the learning process. I'll see about using more polished external libraries when I am proficient enough to work on more serious, long term projects. So, the question is: how do I manage my personal utility library in a way that the functions can be easily included in my various scripts? I am using linux/Kubuntu, vim, g++, etc. and mostly coding CLI scripts. Don't assume too much in terms of experience! ;) Links to tutorials or places where relevant topics are properly documented are welcome.

  Ok, I have the following problem. I have two InnoDB tables: 'places' and 'events'. One place can have many events, but event can be created without entering place. In this case event's foreign key is NULL. I am able to do it with two queries, but then I am visibly separating events which have place assigned from the ones that are without place. Help really appreciated.

• Structuring iPhone/iPad application views

  I have an idea about an application that I want to build and Im new to iPhone/iPad development (but not new to development in other languages/frameworks such as .NET and Java). I want to layout some views on the screen so that they animate (slide in) from different directions into their places. The question is about the strucuture of the application, if I have say 4 rectanglular areas on the screen that contain business data, such as contacts (name, photo, etc...) and they all take up different widths of the screen (say the first contact takes up one row of the screen, but the next 2 take up half the width of the next row each, and so on). Should I create a custom view for the different sized contact views, (i.e. LargeCustomView and SmallCustomView, and any other special type that I make) or should it all be one type, say, CustomerDetailsView which could be stretched to fit at design time? Also, if there were, say, 3 different instances of the same custom view on the one screen, are there 3 instances of the view controller also? Im a little confused about powering the data behind a view, can someone shed some light on this for me? Do I just set the properties (say an instance variable ContactForView) on the view controller for each instance? Thanks for any help you can give Cheers, Mark

• Angular throws "Error: Invalid argument." in IE

  I have a directive which takes element's text and places wbr elements after every 10th character. I'm using it for example on table cells with long text (e.g. URLs), so it does not span over the table. (Bonus question: how can I make IE dev tools to tell me more about error, like the line from source code, because it took me some time to locate it, Error: Invalid argument. does not tell much about the origin.) P.S.: I know IE does not know the wbr at all, but that is not the issue. Edit: in my real application I have re-written the directive to not to look on element's text and modify that, but rather pass the input text via attribute, and works fine now in all browsers. But I'm still curious why the original solution was giving that error in IE, thus starting the bounty.

• Why can't multiple programmatically generated FilteringSelect's share a single store?

  Before you ask, a MultiSelect wouldn't really be intuitive for the user in this instance. I have an object, with an array as its value for 'items', that's provided on the page in a var statement. I also have a function that generates and places dijit.form.FilteringSelects and is triggered on a certain button's click event. Every one of these selects should have the aformentioned object as their 'store' attribute. If I write store: new dojo.data.ItemFileReadStore({ data: object_name }), in my select initialization code, I get weird behavior: I click the generate button 2 times and get 2 FilteringSelects (call them A,B). I click on B's dropdown piece, and the menu appears attached to B. Then I click on A's dropdown button, and menu appears attached to A. If I then go back and click on B's dropdown button again, nothing happens (well not nothing; an error gets thrown). However, if instead, I have data: {items: array_literal} everything works fine, and I switch back and forth between the 2 as much as I want. As the data: statement appears once in the javascript code, this isn't a big deal (now that I have a workaround at least). It is however, exceedingly odd. I attempted to dig into the source code, to no avail.Anybody have any idea what's going on here?

• Actionscript flex sockets and telnet

  I am trying to make a flex application where it gets data from a telnet connection and I am running into a weird problem. To give a brief introduction, i want to read data from a process that exposes it through a socket. So if in the shell i type telnet localhost 8651i receive the xml and then the connection is closed (I get the following Connection closed by foreign host.) Anyway i found a simple tutorial online for flex that essentially is a telnet client and one would expect it to work but everything follows Murphy's laws and nothing ever works! Now i have messages being printed in every event handler and all places that i can think off. When i connect to the socket nothing happens, no event handler is triggered even the connect or close handler and if i do the following the socket.connected returns false! I get no errors, try catch raises no exception. I am at a loss as to whats going wrong? socket.connect(serverURL, portNumber); msg(socket.connected.toString()); Is there something about telnet that i do not know and its causing this to not work. Whats more interesting is why none of the events get fired. Another interesting thing is that i have some python code that does the same thing and its able to get the xml back! The following is the python code that works! def getStats(host, port): sock = socket.socket() sock.connect((host, port)) res = sock.recv(1024*1024*1024, socket.MSG_WAITALL) sock.close() return statFunc(res) So i ask you whats going wrong!!!!!! Is there some inherent problem with how flex handles sockets?

  I have an input file data, a python function parse and a template. What I am trying to do is use parse function to get dictionary out of data and use that to replace fields in template. Now to make this a bit more generic (I perform the same action in few places) I have defined a custom function to do so. What I usually do is write a helper function, which is concise but ugly: if (stateTax > 0) MakeRow(tbl, "NY State Tax", "stdLabel", string.Format("{0:C}", stateTax), "justRight"); And now I'm thinking: haven't I done this 100 times before? Isn't there a more modern way? Just to be explicit: it's a whole list of miscellaneous labels and values. They don't come from any particular data source, and the rules for when rows should be suppressed vary. This example has only two columns, but I have other places with more.

This control could have other content than just the text, so making the Content property an attribute will not solve my problem. I found in some places that I need to implement a ControlBuilder Class, along with another class that implements IParserAccessor. Anyway I just want my default "Content" property to have all types of controls allowed in it, both literal and actual controls.

• How to use iPhone OS 3.2 functionality in an iPhone OS 3.0 app?

  Problem: My app must run on iPhone OS 3.0. However, there are some features of iPhone OS 3.2 which I really want to use. Just as a little add-on for free. But I don't want to cut off my user base by doing this. Imagine you're an iPhone OS 3.0 thing, and someone gives you a book to read. It has iPhone OS 3.2 instructions. You never learned those. So what do you do? Crash? They would have to be hidden, so you're not bothered. Someone wrote recently on SO: keep in mind that you have to check the version at places in the source code where you like to use the new features and provide alternatives for older os versions So how could I do that? Wouldn't Xcode throw warnings when it finds stuff that isn't linkable from anything anywhere? Would I just check for the OS version and dynamically link - somehow - to whatever stuff I think is cool?

• javascript/html/php: Is it possible to insert a value into a form with Ajax?

  I have a form where users enter some text manually. Then I'd like to let the users choose a tag from a database through AJAX, not unlike how tag suggestions appear in the SO question form. While the div where the ajax call places the tag is inside the form, it does not seem to register and the tag is not picked up by the form. Am I missing something in my code, is this impossible or, if impossible there a better way to do this? Thanks for any suggestions. Why does it not advance to the next row? if I move the code: $this->listing = $result->fetch_array() or die('could not create object'); foreach ($this->listing as $key => $value) : $info[$key] = stripslashes(html_entity_decode($value)); endforeach; if I move this outside the class, it works exactly as expected outputting a row at a time while looping through the while statement. Is there a way to write this so that I can keep the fetch_array() call in the class and still loop through the records?

• How costly performance-wise are these actions in iPhone objective-C?

  This is really a few questions in one, I'm wondering what the performance cost is for these things, as I haven't really been following a best practice of any sort for these. The answers may also be useful to other readers, if somebody knows these. (1) If I need the core data managed object context, is it bad to use #import "myAppDelegate.h" //farther down in the code: NSManagedObjectContext *context = [(myAppDelegate.h*)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate] managedObjectContext]; as opposed to leaving the warning you get if you don't cast the delegate? (2) What is the cheapest way to hard-code a string? I have been using return @"myString"; on occasion in some functions where I need to pass it to a variety of places, is it better to do it this way: static NSString *str = @"myString"; return str; (3) How costly is it to subclass an object i wrote vs. making a new one, in general? (4) When I am using core data and navigating through a hierarchy of some sort, is it necessary to turn things back into faults somehow after I read some info from them? or is this done automatically? • C#: How to implement a smart cache

  I have some places where implementing some sort of cache might be useful. For example in cases of doing resource lookups based on custom strings, finding names of properties using reflection, or to have only one PropertyChangedEventArgs per property name. A simple example of the last one: public static class Cache { private static Dictionary<string, PropertyChangedEventArgs> cache; static Cache() { cache = new Dictionary<string, PropertyChangedEventArgs>(); } public static PropertyChangedEventArgs GetPropertyChangedEventArgsa(string propertyName) { if (cache.ContainsKey(propertyName)) return cache[propertyName]; return cache[propertyName] = new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName); } } But, will this work well? For example if we had a whole load of different propertyNames, that would mean we would end up with a huge cache sitting there never being garbage collected or anything. I'm imagining if what is cached are larger values and if the application is a long-running one, this might end up as kind of a problem... or what do you think? How should a good cache be implemented? Is this one good enough for most purposes? Any examples of some nice cache implementations that are not too hard to understand or way too complex to implement?

  I tried many css from other places and stackoverflow, but somehow I can not make it done. I'm very new to css, and using Joomla and a template. I'm using custom.css folder for certain customizations on style. Here is I want to do: I want to style h4 when it is a link. For example, I'm creating a custom html module, have a list in the content. And in the content I'm giving each, h5 style, and a link to it to a certain page in the site. What I want to achieve is to have this list with color blue. And when mouse over-hover to have underline and still the same color. And when clicked back to the original position with no underline and no color change. (the same color in every situation, just underline when you are over it.) I tried these h5, h5 a, h5 a: hover, h5 .contentheading a, and so on... In one instance, it was working with : h5 { font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.3em; font-weight: bold; } h5 a { color: #0088CC; } h5 a: hover { color: #0088CC; text-decoration: underline; } As I read I should use 'a' when the heading is a link. But now something is overriding it, I'm completely lost now. I see a:hover style in the inspection. I want to use this h5 in several content (in custom modules) when I want to style a content as a list to links. And I thought it will be practical to have one heading with a certain style so that I can use it with flexibility. Thanks a lot, any help will be great : )

• C# Generic Generics (A Serious Question)

  In C# I am trying to write code where I would be creating a Func delegate which is in itself generic. For example the following (non-Generic) delegate is returning an arbitrary string: Func<string> getString = () => "Hello!"; I on the other hand want to create a generic which acts similarly to generic methods. For example if I want a generic Func to return default(T) for a type T. I would imagine that I write code as follows: Func<T><T> getDefaultObject = <T>() => default(T); Then I would use it as getDefaultObject<string>() which would return null and if I were to write getDefaultObject<int>() would return 0. This question is not merely an academic excercise. I have found numerous places where I could have used this but I cannot get the syntax right. Is this possible? Are there any libraries which provide this sort of functionality?

• Parse particular text from an XML string

  Hi all, Im writing an app which reads an RSS feed and places items on a map. I need to read the lat and long numbers only from this string: http://www.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.co.uk/map.aspx?isTrafficAlert=true&lat=53.647351&lon=-1.933506 .This is contained in link tags Im a bit of a programming noob but im writing this in C#/Silverlight using Linq to XML. Shold this text be extrated when parsing or after parsing and sent to a class to do this? Many thanks for your assistance. EDIT. Im going to try and do a regex on this this is where I need to integrate the regex somewhere in this code. I need to take the lat and long from the Link element and seperate it into two variables I can use (the results are part of a foreach loop that creates a list.) var events = from ev in document.Descendants("item") select new { Title = (ev.Element("title").Value), Description = (ev.Element("description").Value), Link = (ev.Element("link").Value), }; Question is im not quite ure where to put the regex (once I work out how to use the regex properly! :-) )

  Hello, Lets assume i have 2 methods 1 that places a element on the array and one that removes it. const int Max = 10; int[] table= new int[Max]; I would like to call it up like this: s1.Place(5); // 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 s1.Place(9); // 5 9 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 s1.Remove(9); // 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 I would only like to use : using system for this. The result i get right now when i run the program is s1 = "nameofprogram" "name of class object" Normally i should get 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 to begin with.
