• What do you do before starting on a project?

  I'm still a pretty new project, and I haven't really worked on any large projects yet. However a few projects for school has shown me something I have never really thought of before. Pre-Project planning. One project we ran into a huge problem at the very last minute, and the other project was not divided up between partners very evenly, such that all the work was actually done at the end. So my question to everyone here is: How do you plan out the project beforehand? Please try to cover the following: Design (draw out UI by hand, UMLs, etc.) Division of Labor Timeline (especially how you estimate how much time is needed for certain things) and anything else you can think of. • Vb.exe performance time

  Hi I am running a vb.exe through automation. In exe I have return a code which takes a data from database and saves that data into file. I ran that .exe for the first time. It took 1 mins. For testing baseline I called same .exe 5 times one after the other. But it took nearly 10 mins to generate. My question is if it takes 1 min for 1 report to generate then it should take 5 mins to generate 5 report but why it is taking 10 mins (more than the double). Is there any problem while calling a exe one after the other?

• MySQL floating point comparison issues

  I ran into an issue by introducing floating point columns in the MySQL database schema that the comparisons on floating point values don't return the correct results always. 1 - 50.12 2 - 34.57 3 - 12.75 4 - ...(rest all less than 12.00) SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `users` WHERE `points` > "12.75" This returns me "3". I have read that the comparisons of floating point values in MySQL is a bad idea and decimal type is the better option. Do I have any hope of moving ahead with the float type and get the comparisons to work correctly?

• ruby1.9.1 can't find installed gems, yet ruby1.8 can...

  On ubuntu here. I installed both ruby1.8 and ruby1.9.1. I also ran these commands ruby1.8 setup.rb ruby1.9.1 setup.rb Both worked fine, I was also able to install gems for both. The gems in gem 1.9.1 and gem1.8 both show up correctly for gem list. The problems however begin with this: ruby1.9.1 some_script.rb. It cannot find any of the gems. I tried uncommenting some out figuring that parseconfig was the problem, yet it couldn't find any of the others, which are definetly in gem1.9.1 list. Any thoughts as to what is causing this/how to recover?

I'm looking for which of Dijkstra's 1300+ writings best describe in further detail rules such as he was describing above.

• Avoiding "variable might not have been initialized"

  I recently ran across a routine that looks something like this: procedure TMyForm.DoSomething(list: TList<TMyObject>; const flag: boolean); var local: integer; begin if flag then //do something else local := ExpensiveFunctionCallThatCalculatesSomething; //do something else for i := 0 to list.Count do if flag then //do something else if list[i].IntValue > local then //WARNING HERE //do something else end; This gives Variable 'local' might not have been initialized even though you can tell by reading the code that you won't hit that line unless the code branch that initializes it has run. Now, I could get rid of this warning by adding a useless local := 0; at the top of the procedure, but I wonder if there might not be a better way to structure this to avoid the issue. Anyone have any ideas?

• Application built using VS2010 does not work in VS-Express2008 - C

  Hello, I have wrote an application that consists of two projects in a solution, each project contains only 1 .c source file. I was using Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate but due to the University only supporting 2008 I decided to create a blank solution and copy the source files into the new one. After creating a new solution in VS2008 express, creating two projects and re-creating and adding the source files to the projects I ran the application. For some reason only one part of the application does not work, I use CreateProcess() to execute "Project1.exe" from Project 2. This works fine under vs2010 but for some reason it's not working under VS2008 express, GetLastError() is showing an Error 2: File Not Found. This is an image showing the same code in both IDE's: I'm not using anything special and I've made sure that both solutions/projects are using .Net 3.5. I can't work out why it would work for one IDE and not the other. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  I ran into a problem today and a friend recommended I use a global static instance or more elegantly a singleton pattern. I spent a few hours reading about singletons but a few things still escape me. Background: What Im trying to accomplish is creating an instance of an API and use this one instance in all my classes (as opposed to making a new connection, etc). There seems to be about 100 ways of creating a singleton but with some help from yoda I found some thread safe examples. ..so given the following code: public sealed class Singleton { public static Singleton Instance { get; private set; } static Singleton() { Instance = new Singleton(); } } How/Where would you instantiate the this new class and how should it be called from a separate class? • Should I include the binary in a Rails plugin or not?

  Hello. I'm trying to roll out a little Rails plugin that is basically is just a wrapper to a 7zip archiver. Should I include the 7zip binaries for windows, mac and linux with it or explain to user that it's a dependency and they need to get it working. I know it's not that difficult to install a 7zip, but what is the best practice in general. The reason I'm asking is cause I've ran so many times into gems that need some sort of dependency that doesn't compile properly or is not available in ready form for the OS in question and then I end up spending have a day hunting down for a binary or a way to compile the program. (Have happened to me both on Mac and Windows, not on Debian so far. )

• Eclipse Project Files to .exe or Runnable Jar

  I am able to create the runnable jar using the export feature. However, it does not behave like it does in eclipse. When my program first starts, launch settings are displayed. I can see this. However, when I want to actually launch the meat of the program, it doesn't show up. It seems to not look at all my class files or something. I have tried Far Jar but that didn't work... I have triend JSmooth but still just ran the one frame If I can make this a runnable jar that works or even a .exe, that would be great!

• XAMPP mail not working with PHP mail() function.

  Hi gusy, I just installed XAMPP, Apache is running, so is MySQL and Mercury. In Dreamweaver I created a php file with a mail($to,$subject,$msg,'From:'.$email); function, but when I ran the file from localhost it showed an error. After playing around with xampp control panel, turning mercury on and off, it's not showing any errors, yet is not send the email either... any ideas? the 'admin' button on the cp for mercury does nothing. • Posting to tumblr in PHP

  I am trying to make a test post to my tumblr blog with a php script (that will eventually be ran as a cron job) I have been browsing google and read many answers on here and the closest I found is explained in this post: Tumblr OAuth using PHP's OAuth class I am using the code in his tutorial here: http://vigrond.com/blog/2012/02/04/oauth-extension-php-and-the-tumblr-api/ Pretty much as is, replacing the blogurl with mine and of course the consumer and secret key. When I run the .php script via my browser however, nothing happens. Any ideas? EDIT: The only error I found in cPanel's error log is this: [Wed Oct 31 00:29:25 2012] [error] [client xx.xx.xx.xx ] PHP Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at /path on line 14 But I fixed this and the error does not appear anymore.

• Getting "select permission denied" when using LINQ but my account is a sysadmin

  I have a console app that's geared to be automatically ran as a Scheduled Task. I use LINQ to SQL to pull some data out of the database, format it into a CSV and email it to a client. All of a sudden I am getting the error "SELECT permission denied for table", but the account I'm using to connect to the database (specified in my app.config file) has the "sysadmin" server role (bad programmer, I know; I'll get around to changing it to a better account later but I want to make sure it works first). I can connect directly to the SQL database using that very same account and query the table in question without a problem, it only seems to be when using the LINQ code. Any idea what would be causing this?

• system() copy fails, while cmd copy works

  In cmd.exe, I can execute the command "copy c:\hello.txt c:\hello2.txt" and it worked fine. But in my C program, I ran this piece of code and got the following error: #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { system("copy c:\hello.txt c:\hello2.txt"); system("pause"); return 0; } Output: The system cannot find the file specified. Anybody know what is going on here?

  Hey guys, I would like to write a small C++ app and run it on chrome using the native client API. I have a few questions though: 1) I compiled the examples on Ubuntu and ran the code on firefox but can't run it on chrome (using version 5.0.342.7 beta) Do I need to install something? An extension/plugin? 2) I can't find a single online application I could run? Links anyone, I want to see the power of this thing without having to compile the code locally.   Ran accross the following code in an article and didn't think it was standard C/C++ syntax for the char* array. As a test, both Visual C++ (visual studio 2005) and C++ Builder Rad XE both reject the 2nd line. Without using #defines, anyone have any tricks/tips for keeping enums and a string array sort of in sync without resorting to STL ?   i have been programming in C/C++ for my academic courses a lot and was under the impression i had a pretty good grasp of it. but lately i had to work in a bluetooth application that had a server and client implementation in a Linux box and an embedded system. i learned bluez bluetooth API, socket/network programming and coded it. however i ran into a lot of problems with memory leaks and segmentation faults and other memory related errors along the way.as the code grew more complex i all but lost control of the pointers and threads and sockets. this got me wondering that i had a lot to learn that they didn't say in the basic C/C++ books. so i wanted to ask for the resources that are available that'll help be code better in a professional way in C/C++ .especially for the Linux/Mac environment (gcc compiler).

Initializing two vars in parallel works great: var (x,y) = (1,2) However I can't find a way to assign new values in parallel: (x,y) = (x+y,y-x) //invalid syntax I end up writing something like this: val xtmp = x+y; y = x-y; x = xtmp I realize writing functional code is one way of avoiding this, but there are certain situations where vars just make more sense. I have two questions: 1) Is there a better way of doing this? Am I missing something? 2) What is the reason for not allowing true parallel assignment?

• Killing the mysqld process

  I have a table with ~800k rows. I ran an update users set hash = SHA1(CONCAT({about eight fields})) where 1; Now I have a hung Sequel Pro process and I'm not sure about the mysqld process. This is two questions: What harm can possibly come from killing these programs? I'm working on a separate database, so no damage should come to other databases on the system, right? Assume you had to update a table like this. What would be a quicker / more reliable method of updating without writing a separate script. I just checked with phpMyAdmin and it appears as though the query is complete. I still have Sequel Pro using 100% of both my cores though...
