  So, what's your favourite TC shortcut or shortcut combination ? Which one do you use and for what purpose ? Among my most often used: Ctrl-Left ( or Ctrl-Right ) - open archive or folder under cursor in opposite tab. Ctrl-Shift-Enter, Alt-F8, Ctrl-X - copy full file path to clipboard. Shift-F6, Shift-End(if needed), Ctrl-C - copy only file name w/o path. Select files, Ctrl-M - multi-rename, for example remove "DVDrip" from file names. Ctrl-\ - go to root directory. Ctrl-D, - go to directory with highlighted letter specified. For example, name a downloads directory "&Downloads" in favourites, and the letter after ampersand will be highlighted. Alt-F7, feed to listbox, Ctrl-A, Mark(menu)-Save selection to file - creates a file with all files and directories inside current, with full path. Ctrl-[3-6] - sort files by name(3), extension(4), date(5), size(6). For example, Sort by name, when you need movies and soundracks with the same name and different extension to group them together. Sort by extension, when you need to find EXEs in Windows directory. Sort by Date, when you need to find the latest file downloaded in your dir. Sort by size, when you need to delete the largest files for free space.

• Compress a folder of PDF files into separate zip archives

  I wanted to take a folder full of PDF files and create a number of separate zip files, after following the advice on this question everything worked *almost*perfectly. Here's what happened: When I issued this command in Terminal: zip -s 5m -r ~/Desktop/invoices ~/Desktop/Invoices/ Everything worked really well, in that I got 11 ZIP files of approximately 5 MB each; placed in the folder specified. However, the files they outputted were named as follows: invoices.z01 invoices.z02 invoices.z03 invoices.z04 invoices.z05 invoices.z06 invoices.z07 invoices.z08 invoices.z09 invoices.z10 invoices.zip So as you can see only invoices.zip has been named correctly. I could go through and rename them one by one, but seriously, if we start doing that then what in the name of Evolution are computers for?! Now, I am also aware that I'm relatively new to the Terminal; so I could be making a very silly mistake somewhere. If that's the case, please be patient :-) Any help would be greatly appreciated. One last note: I'm quadriplegic so I would like to avoid GUI applications as much as possible, I use voice recognition software you see this working in the Terminal is much much easier.

• Using WebDAV for automated downloads

  I currently manage a number of sites (at one point about a dozen, currently four, but soon growing into the dozens or hundreds) that serve a piece of software to clients at their remote locations. Our web server is Windows SBS Server 2k3, and the remote servers are Windows Server 2k3.When we have new versions of the software, I upload this new software to a specific directory and rename it; each time the clients boot, they pull their software from that specific directory. With just a few sites, it's no problem for me to RDP in and copy the files over. As the number grows, this will quickly become quite unwieldy. So I'm thinking that WebDAV would be part of a solution, so that I could simply push the newest version to our server (Windows SBS Server 2003) and make it available to the sites to grab. However, on the remote server side, what are some suggestions for automating the download? I only want the servers to download the files during downtime (between 3 AM and 9 AM), and I only want them to download if there is a new version available. I had thought of writing a program that checked the files on the WebDAV server at a regular interval, compared a hash of the current software to a hash of the software on the server, and only downloaded if they were different, but I'm wondering if there is something I am unaware of that can automate the process.

• can i change the black background of an iphone app?

  My app is structured like this, a single MainWindow with window backgroundColor to white(which doesn't appear anywhere anyway), and in this nib i have a UINavigationController which doesn't seems to have a backgroundColor. Any view controller is added from code and made from code and they have a gray background. What happens is that when i rotate the iphone and the views are rotating as well, i see a black background under my views. Can this be changed? It looks ugly especially if i have a photo that is rotating in the same time with my gray background.

  Hello I would like to know if there is any API feature that can tell me which users liked my application page. I know that it is possible to check if a user is a fan of any given Page using page.isFan verification or to get the number of fans. But is it possible to get the fans' User ID? If so, is it possible to get that data ordered by the date they became fans of the page? For exemple usign FQL i can get the user ID of someone o like an facebook object like post or photo. http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/fql/like Can i do this for the people who liked my page? • Grand Central Strategy for Opening Multiple Files

  I have a working implementation using Grand Central dispatch queues that (1) opens a file and computes an OpenSSL DSA hash on "queue1", (2) writing out the hash to a new "side car" file for later verification on "queue2". I would like to open multiple files at the same time, but based on some logic that doesn't "choke" the OS by having 100s of files open and exceeding the hard drive's sustainable output. Photo browsing applications such as iPhoto or Aperture seem to open multiple files and display them, so I'm assuming this can be done. I'm assuming the biggest limitation will be disk I/O, as the application can (in theory) read and write multiple files simultaneously. Any suggestions? TIA

  I have SlideShowPro, a Flash photo app that loads an XML file with the paths to the images. Now I don't want people to go sniff in the XML file to get to the images. I tried changing the file images.xml to spacer.gif and it seems to work fine. But I would like to know if I would run into any problems changing the extension. btw already used a few techniques to make the images not so accessible, I know there is no bulletproof solution. Obfuscating the XML file is just another trick..

• How do I keep the keyword.url setting in firefox to default when you restart the browser without del

  I am on the latest version of Firefox (not beta or anything like that) and currently my keyword.url is stuck on search.google.com (which I don't remember setting even though the about:config says it's a user setting. Can someone tell me how to set it back to default and keep it at default when I reset my browser? I do not want to delete prefs.js as I do not want to go thru setting up all the extension settings I have just to have my location bar search google (if this is the only way then I'll stick with searching from the search bar instead). I've checked all my extensions that may effect the location bar but could not find anything that says it would change the default search engine for this. I've also tried to open the prefs.js in wordpad or notepad but it just ends up freezing when trying to edit it at all (yes the browser is closed at the time). I also deleted the prefs-1.js (along with 2 others) that were older (after trying to rename those to prefs.js and see if this corrects it. It might have but had such old extension settings I went back to my latest prefs.js with this one issue instead of the issue of setting back up a ton of extensions. I can give any other info if needed, someone please help me fix this issue if possible.

  Probably the title is a little bit confusing, let me explain the situation. Our company wants to implement a corporate wireless lan with PEAP authentication. unfortunately someone made a big mistake in our AD design 10 years ago. The domain name we are using "company.ch" is not owned by company but by someone else. so it is not possible to issue a public SSL certificate for the RADIUS server. Our AD is to big to rename it. We already thought about using our private PKI and rollout the CA certificate via GPO but that would only cover our corporate managed clients but not the BYOD (Smartphones, Tablets, Laptops..) Is there a way to add a secondary domain name like “company2.ch” and issue a public certificate and join that radius to that secondary domain aslwell, and configure that secondary dns suffix via DHCP for all the client pools... or is there another way with for example a new radius server which has his own domain company2.ch which is connected with some kind of trust between the company.ch doamin? sorry i'am not a client server guy.. hopefully you get my drift.!?

• Deleting certain files sits at "preparing to recycle" on Windows 7?

  We recently setup one of our users with a brand new Windows 7 computer, however she is unable to delete certain files. With some testing, I found I cannot move, rename, or view properties of these files either. When trying to delete the file, it just sits at the "Preparing to recycle" popup, however the "from" section says "Discovering items..." Clicking "More Details" on the popup shows me that it can't find the file name or where it's recycling from: Other notes... All the affected files are .pdf files that get created via a scanner. Other pdf files are fine. Opening the files works fine. I can open the file, Save As a new file, and delete the new one just fine Trying to delete the file via command prompt just sits there Rebooting the computer will let me manipulate the files like normal, however this user is responsible for scanning hundreds of documents a day and I'd rather not have to tell her to reboot her computer to delete files. • Windows cannot open directory with too long name created by Linux

  Hello! My laptop has two OSes: Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. A partition of Windows 7 of format NTFS is mounted in Ubuntu. In Ubuntu, I created a directory under somehow deep path and with a long name for itself, specifically, the name for that directory is "a set of size-measurable subsets ie sigma algebra". Now in Windows, I cannot open the directory, which I guess is because of the name is too long, nor can I rename it. I was wondering if there is some way to access that directory under Windows? Better without changing the directory if possible, but will have to if necessary. Thanks and regards! • Rails - building an absolute url in a model's virtual attribute without url helper

  I have a model that has paperclip attachments. The model might be used in multiple rails apps I need to return a full (non-relative) url to the attachment as part of a JSON API being consumed elsewhere. I'd like to abstract the paperclip aspect and have a simple virtual attribute like this: def thumbnail_url self.photo.url(:thumb) end This however only gives me the relative path. Since it's in the model I can't use the URL helper methods, right? What would be a good approach to prepending the application root url since I don't have helper support? I would like to avoid hardcoding something or adding code to the controller method that assembles my JSON. Thank you

• Changing <img src="XXX" />, js event when new image has finished loading?

  I have a photo gallery web page where a single <img src="XXX" /> element's src is changed (on a click) with javascript to show the next image—a poor man's ajax I guess. Works great on faster connections when the new image appears almost immediately. Even if it takes a few seconds to load, every browser I've tested it on keeps the old image in place until the new one is completely loaded. It's a little confusing waiting those few seconds on a slow connection, though, and I'm wondering if there's some javascript event that fires when the new image is done loading, allowing me to put a little working... animated gif or something up in the meantime. I know I could use AJAX for real (I'm using jQuery already), but this is such a nice and simple solution. Besides this lag, is there any other reason I should stay away from this approach to changing images? thanks.

  Hi all, I'm working on an iPhone app and I need to be able to display images to users. I have already gotten the code that takes the photo and stores it into the filesystem working well. Now I just need to figure out how to display the image. I've looked at the Three20 project I've read about on a few of the posts here, but it seems a bit cumbersome and like an extra dependency to import link and combine all of the Three20 library into my little app. Are there any other ways or a more streamlined library that will let me display photos to my users? • Making libmagic/file detect .docx files

  As seen elsewhere, docx, xlsx and pttx are ZIPs. When uploading them to my web application, file (via libmagic andpython-magic) detects them as being ZIP. I store the contents of the file as a blob in the database, but naturally I don't want to trust the user with what kind of file type this is. So I would like to trust file for and automatically generate a filename during download. I know one can modify /etc/magic but the format (magic(5)) is way too complicated for me. I found a bug report on the issue at Debian bugs but since it's from 2008 it doesn't seem to be fixed any time soon. I guess my only other alternative is to indeed trust the user (but still store the contents as a blob) and only check the file extension based on the file name. This way I can disallow some extensions and allow others. And when the user re-downloads his file, he can have it in whatever way he uploaded it. But this solution is insecure if the file is shared with others, since you can simply rename the file to allow uploading it. Any ideas? Lastly, I found a list of magic numbers for docx etc, but I'm unable to convert these into the magic(5) format.

• Correct MySQL username/password, but getting Access Denied error when run from script

  I'm currently trying to run the following command from within a shell script. /usr/bin/mysql -u username -ppassword -h localhost database It works perfectly fine when executed manually, and not from within a script. When I try to execute a script that contains that command, I get the following error: ERROR 1045 (28000) at line 3: Access denied for user 'username'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I literally copied and pasted the working command into the script. Why the error? As a sidenote: the ultimate intent is to run the script with cron. EDIT: Here is a stripped down version of my script that I'm trying to run.   I've got Wordpress 2.5 installed on my website. It works well, but I can't get the photo uploader to work. When I'm writing a post, I click on the "Add media" button. In the "Choose File" tab, I see the "Choose files to upload" button. When I click on it, nothing happens. I searched the net and found nothing helpful. One page vaguely mentioned having the latest Flash player. I verified and confirmed that I have the latest player. Any ideas?

• How to store millions of pictures about 2k each in size

  We're creating an ASP.Net MVC site that will need to store 1 million+ pictures, all around 2k-5k in size. From previous ressearch, it looks like a file server is probably better than a db (feel free to comment otherwise). Is there anything special to consider when storing this many files? Are there any issues with Windows being able to find the photo quickly if there are so many files in one folder? Does a segmented directory structure need to be created, for example dividing them up by filename? It would be nice if the solution would scale to at least 10 million pictures for potential future expansion needs.

• UIPopover Sizing

  I have a UIPopoverController which I'm trying to show from a UIBarButtonItem in a navigation bar. Despite setting the resizing mask for the tableview inside the popover's content viewController, it takes up the whole height of the screen. The only thing which has any effect on the content size is menuPopover.contentViewController.view setFrame:CGRect. I'm using the code below to show the popover inside the left hand side of a UISplitViewController // menuPopover and editVc are properties on the parent viewController menuPopover = [[UIPopoverController alloc] initWithContentViewController:editVc]; [menuPopover presentPopoverFromBarButtonItem:btnMenu permittedArrowDirections:UIPopoverArrowDirectionAny animated:true]; [menuPopover setPopoverContentSize:CGSizeMake(400, 500) animated:true]; [menuPopover.contentViewController.view setFrame:CGRectMake(0,0,400, 500)]; Yet this is what I'm seeing.   In a WPF application i'm using Linq to SQL in a multi tier application. (This is an archailogy photo filing application), so every excavation has its corresponding Pictures, thus a one-to-many relationship. This relationship is correctly created by SQLMetal (which i'm using to create the POCOs). So here is the situation i 'm having trouble with: Saving changes (either of new or altered objects) is done through UnitOfWork() pattern this way: using (IUnitOfWork unitOfWork = UnitOfWork.Begin()) { //if this is a new record if (SelectedExcavation.excavation.ExcavationId == 0) { IsNewRecord = true; excavService.Add(SelectedExcavation.excavation); } //send the actual changes to the dbms unitOfWork.Commit(); } Everything works fine! BUTTTT!!! Whenever a record gets updated which has (already at least one ) corresponding Picture Record: 1) a new Excavation Record is inserted 2) the current Excavation Record gets updated 3) the previous Picture Record gets its Id changed to the newly created ExcavationId What is going on under the hood? Does Linq to SQL not handle such simple update scenarios? Thanks in advance

• Looking for a good Dynamic Imaging Solution

  I work for a small E-Commerce shop and we are looking for a process that will handle resizing our product images dynamically. Currently our designers take high resolution photos, either provided by the manufactures or created in house, and alter them to fit various pages on our site. The designers are constantly resizing, cropping, altering compression levels, etc., of each product photo to fit the needs of the business. Being that our product line is updated frequently, this becomes a monotonous task. Abobe Scene7 does exactly what we are looking to do and the images are served up from a CDN. Unfortunately we found it to be too expensive. I'm curious to learn how others handle this process at their organizations. Does anyone know of any good 3rd party tools or other SAAS providers that can handle performing some basic image manipulation and serving them on the fly?
