  • admin right to IIS7 for user using group policy or script?

    I want to provide administrator rights to user account under windows 7 just for IIS7 and user shouldn't be able to manage any other application. I have create group policy rules using applocker for windows7 where user can manage all the installed application, but it doesn't works for IIS7 as it need admin rights. Can we do this using group policy or by adding scripts under group policy for users. Also any vbscript which can provide admin rights to IIS7 for a particular user will do.

  • Choosing the right TV tuner - USB or PCI TV tuners, hardware/software, DVB? Hybrid/combo/analog?

    Greetings, I'll start with some background information so you know what I'm trying to accomplish and then get to my question. I work at a Television station in the US and we are working on setting up an online DVR/Podcast system for all of our newscasts. So basically we would be recording every newscast in HD, encoding it to flv/h.264 for viewing in a browser on flash compatible and iphone/ipad devices, eventually migrating to WebM when it's browser compliant. This task is theoretically pretty simple as it all it involves is a TV tuner device and a program like VLC, MythTV or whatever to schedule and dump it to a file, encode it with VLC/FFMPEG and push it to the streaming server. Now to the hardware, in order to accomplish that task, should I use an internal PCI tuner or a USB 2.0 tuner? Is there a difference? The bus speeds of both are not too far apart, and is the bus speed really relevant in this case? Does it matter if the device has a hardware encoder or a software encoder? On many sites the USB was recommended for ease of set up and use, but would it overly task a processor, or is that not a concern as long as it's a decent PC (at least duo core, 6gb ram). What's the difference between the stick USB and the Box USBs? To my understanding analog is basically gone in the US, so we would want a hybrid or combo tuner correct? How do those differ from DVB? Are there any other features or concepts which I am missing which may influence the recommended product. It would be ideal if the device which could work in both Linux and a Windows environment, to my knowledge most Hauppauge are?   • In Windows 7 Home Premium, is it possible to grant a user account the "log on as a service" right and if so, how?

    The title says it all. I need to have the ability for a local user account to log on as a service on a computer running Windows 7 Home Premium. In Windows 7 Ultimate, this is accomplished by going to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy and adding the user to the "Log on as a service" policy. In Home Premium, there is no Local Security Policy in the Control Panel. Is there another way to add the use to that policy (i.e. registry setting) or is my only recourse to upgrade the computer to Windows 7 Professional? Thanks in Advance, Ryan

  • How can email possibly be routed to the right place with no to: address?

    I'm no novice on networking technology, but one thing I don't really know much about in detail is email and headers. How does email work SPECIFICALLY? I'm getting spam in my hotmail inbox when I've made painful attempts to not give out my actual email. I use my own domain name to forward email to my inbox using several aliases. Yet now I'm getting spam with no address in the to: line, or also "undisclosed recipients". Looking at the headers is of no help whatsoever. So from a technical standpoint, I have to wonder... if I send an email to a certain address in my personal domain and it gets forwarded to my hotmail account, how does hotmail know what inbox to dump the message in if that address is not listed in the headers?

  • Strange focus bug in Firefox (chrome vs content)

    Here is a strange bug I'm experiencing in Firefox: I can only use either the chrome, or the content, not both at the same time! For example, I can click on tabs and the toolbar icons, focus the search bar and write in it as well as the address bar, but if I try to click on anything in the content (eg a link or a textfield to write something), then nothing happens. The mouse pointer doesn't change either, it just stays a pointer when I hover over things, and the links I hover don't react either. But if I alt-tab to another program (or click on it in the taskbar), then back to Firefox, then I can use the area that I click on. So if I click somewhere on the webpage to get focus back to Firefox, then I can click on links and write things (like this text), but I cannot click on tabs or refresh or anything else in the chrome. I can't even click on the minimize, restore and close icons! To get focus back on the chrome I have to alt-tab to another program, and then click on the chrome to get back to Firefox to be able to use the chrome again. I've tried closing and starting it again, but the bug is still there. I have experienced this before, but I don't remember what I did to fix it. This bug seems to occur sometimes when I wake up the computer from standby, but I leave by computer in standby all the time, so that is not the only factor.

  • Change the default browser which Kopete opens when you click a link?

    I have FireFox as my desktop's default browser (Ubuntu/Gnome 9.10) and most applications open links into FF readily enough, including Choqok (a KDE twitter client). But Kopete insists on opening Konqueror - which is annoying as it takes an age to load, while FF is almost always open an simply needs a new tab. I've checked though the preferences of Kopete, and can't seem to find anything to make it use FF.

    On a multi-monitor system, if I'm viewing a full-screen video in Flash on one monitor, clicking the mouse on the other monitor causes Flash to leave full-screen mode and revert to normal size. What's the easiest way of preventing this that works on my version of Flash? My system is Flash 10 (10.0.12.36), in Firefox 3.5 on Windows Vista 64, but I think it affects all current versions. This is very annoying behaviour, but unfortunately, according to this bug report response it seem to be a security feature, rather than a bug: We understand that many users would like fullscreen on one monitor and to be able to interact with your OS on another monitor. However, due to security requirements, we require that Flash and Browser must be the current focus of your OS.

  • SharePoint extranet security concerns, am I right to be worried?

    We are currently running MOSS 2007 internally, and have been doing so for about 12 months with no major issues. There has now been a request from management to provide access from the internet for small groups (initially) which are comprised of members from other Community Organisations like ours. Committees and the like. My first reaction was not joy when presented with this request, however I'd like to make sure the apprehension is warranted. I have read a few docs on TechNet about security hardening with regard to SharePoint, but I'm interested to know what others have done. I've spoken with another organisation who has already implemented something similar, and they have essentially port-forwarded from the internet to their internal production MOSS server. I don't really like the sound of this. Is it adviseable/necessary to run a DMZ type configuration, with a separate web front-end on a contained network segment? Does that even offer me any greater security than their setup? Some of the configurations from a TechNet doc aren't really feasible, given our current network budget. I've already made my concerns known to management, but it appears it will go ahead in some form or another. I'm tempted to run a completely isolated, seperate install just for these types of users. Should I even be concerned about it? Any thoughts, comments would be most welcomed at this point.

  • replacing buffalo lonkstations with FreeNAS, overall backup strategy, am I on the right path?

    We've been using 2 Buffalo LinkStations of 320Gb each for shared directory and employee's server storage (around 20 employees). So only documents (word, excel, cad drawings etc.) and database backup of the main application server (ERP, Accounting) 1 buffalo box serves as a main one, located at the server room, next to the main application server and the other buffalo box is located on the opposite side of the building (for fire protection) in a secure storage room and backs up the first one. We also have several external HDs that backs up everything from the buffalo box for an offsite backup. After 3.5 years of using these, capacity is a main limitation, I'm planning a replacement and would like to use FreeNAS (we already use monowall with great success). I would like to keep it simple and continue similar setup, building two low power boxes with 1 hd (2Tb) each. Is low power atom mobo OK? Not sure about HDs? I've read on this site somebody mentioning more seagate ES2 as more reliable and better performing. How would those eco/green drives compare. We've been pretty happy with speed of Buffalo boxes and I don't want my users to notice any slowdown. Any suggestion?

  • Dead laptop screen rewired to external only right from boot-up?

    I have a Compaq CQ50-215CA laptop and after a year and 5 months, the screen is completely distorted now. I plan on removing the screen soon, but I realize that the BIOS screen, OS select and Vista boot sequence are all displayed on the laptop screen rather than the external display. Is there some way to get the laptop to display everything (From boot-up to shutdown) on an external display (VGA port)?

  • Is Family Tree Maker 2011 the right upgrade for a FTM 11 user?

    My father has used Family Tree Maker for years, but hasn't upgraded since version 11. It is difficult to tell from reviews at Amazon and other places whether upgrading to FTM 2011 is a good choice. File incompatibilities and upgrade woes sound like customer service is lacking, and i've read reports of it uploading your data to their database but then trying to sell you a download of data. Looking at the ancestry.com site makes me think it's solely about selling add-ons and upgrades. On the other hand, the feature set seems fairly rich and the software has a pretty strong following. I was able to get Gramps working on my system, but that's not going to work for my dad. Any advice on a good upgrade path?

  • What is the right way to use Internet Sharing in OS X?

    For a while now I've been using the Wireless in my Mac Mini as a seperate WiFi access point because my main router doesn't quite cover my whole house. There is a dedicated CAT 5E line down to the Mini, which has a static IP address. I've turned Internet Sharing on, using Airport/WiFi but it seems my options for security are limited. Can I do WPA2? Also, it seems like my iPhone only connects 25% of the time, and the rest of the time it claims I've given a bad password. I've tried "Forget this network" repeatedly.

My guess is that I should change the domain name with any wildcard. Any idea?   • linux raid 1: right after replacing and syncing one drive, the other disk fails - understanding what is going on with mdstat/mdadm

    We have an old RAID 1 Linux server (Ubuntu Lucid 10.04), with four partitions. A few days ago /dev/sdb failed, and today we noticed /dev/sda had pre-failure ominous SMART signs (~4000 reallocated sector count). We replaced /dev/sdb this morning and rebuilt the RAID on the new drive, following this guide: http://www.howtoforge.com/replacing_hard_disks_in_a_raid1_array Everything went smooth until the very end. When it looked like it was finishing to synchronize the last partition, the other old one failed. At this point I am very unsure of the state of the system. Everything seems working and the files seem to be all accessible, just as if it synchronized everything, but I'm new to RAID and I'm worried about what is going on. Why aren't they consistent along all the array? Is the first U /dev/sda or /dev/sdb? (I tried looking on the web for this trivial information but I found no explicit indication) If I read correctly for md0, [_U] should be /dev/sda1 (down) and /dev/sdb1 (up). But if /dev/sda has failed, how can it be the opposite for md3 ? I understand /dev/sdb4 is now spare because probably it failed to synchronize it 100%, but why does it show /dev/sda4 as up? Shouldn't it be [__]? Or [_U] anyway? The /dev/sda drive now cannot even be accessed by SMART anymore apparently, so I wouldn't expect it to be up. What is wrong with my interpretation of the output?   • MicrosoftOnline Migration - Why do I have to wait several minutes before I can click "Finish?"

    I'm using the MicrosoftOnline Internet E-Mail Mailbox Migration Wizard. I'm moving my email from several GMail accounts to my Microsoft Exchange Online mailboxes. Every time I migrate all or part of a GMail mailbox, I have to wait about five minutes after it completes migration before the Finish button becomes available. What is going on during this time? Is it something I am doing wrong, or is the system just slow?
