• Java: How do you really force a GC using JVMTI's ForceGargabeCollection?

  I'm not looking for the usual "you can only hint the GC in Java using System.gc()" answers, this is not at all what this question is about. My questions is not subjective and is based on a reality: GC can be forced in Java for a fact. A lot of programs that we use daily do it: IntelliJ IDEA, NetBeans, VisualVM. They all can force GC to happen. How is it done? I take it they're all using JVMTI and more specifically the ForceGarbabeCollection (notice the "Force") but how can I try it for myself? http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/platform/jvmti/jvmti.html#ForceGarbageCollection Also note that this question is not about "why" I'd want to do this: the "why" may be "curiosity" or "we're writing a program similar to VisualVM", etc. The question is really "how do you force a GC using JVMTI's ForceGarbageCollection"? Does the JVM needs to be launched with any special parameters? Is any JNI required? If so, what code exactly? Does it only work on Sun VMs? Any complete and compilable example would be most welcome.

  Hey everyone, I have a java project that I'm working on which was working until a few days ago. I'm not sure what I did to my Eclipse set-up to hose it but now I'm getting a java.lang.ClassNotFoundException when I try to run some code that accesses the google finance api. I've built a small test application that uses the google finance api on its own and that seems to work. So, I think this is a project specific problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.   I have hosted an asp.net 2.0 site. Everyday, i am getting an error "Padding is invalid and cannot be removed" 2-3 times. Backend used is sql server 2005. the site is controlled via plesk 9.2 CP. Pooling is enabled with timeout as 120 Minutes, in IIS. Can it be the reason for this? I have not used any encryption except for the stored passwords(MD5) The error message is : " Base Exception = : Padding is invalid and cannot be removed. - Source : System.Web - TargetSite :Void ThrowError(System.Exception, System.String, System.String, Boolean)Message : Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. " & System Log (Application) says " Event code: 4009 Event message: Viewstate verification failed. Reason: The viewstate supplied failed integrity check. • ASP.net AppendHeader not working in ASP MVC

  I'm having problems getting AppendHeader to work properly if I am also using an authorize filter. I'm using an actionfilter for my AJAX actions that applies Expires, Last-Modified, Cache-Control and Pragma (though while testing I have tried including it in the action method itself with no change in results). If I don't have an authorize filter the headers work fine. Once I add the filter the headers I tried to add get stripped. • Hadoop streaming with Python and python subprocess

  I have established a basic hadoop master slave cluster setup and able to run mapreduce programs (including python) on the cluster. Now I am trying to run a python code which accesses a C binary and so I am using the subprocess module. I am able to use the hadoop streaming for a normal python code but when I include the subprocess module to access a binary, the job is getting failed. • Java Error beeping

  Im working on a Chat client that i didnt write the bulk of the code for. It works fine however when someone sends a message it beeps (system error beep) when using Java 7. Java 6 and below doesn't have this beep. I cant seem to find whats causing the beep is there any way to find it ? I dont think its calling beep as i have public class nobeep extends sun.awt.windows.WToolkit { @Override public void beep() { System.out.println("tried to beep"); new Exception().printStackTrace(); } } and then called System.setProperty("awt.toolkit", "nobeep"); in the main method. Using the method to send a beep doesnt make it beep. Its only when sent normally. Is there a quick way to track down the cause of the beep ? Edit: After looking in the bugs database - its confirmed. http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=7194469 I know it says no work around but is there one (java not c++) or just wait until update 8 ?

• How to thoroughly purge and reinstall postgresql on ubuntu?

  Somehow I've managed to completely bugger the install of postgresql on Ubuntu karmic. I want to start over from scratch, but when I "purge" the package with apt-get it still leaves traces behind such that the reinstall configuration doesn't run properly. After I've done: apt-get purge postgresql apt-get install postgresql It said Setting up postgresql-8.4 (8.4.3-0ubuntu9.10.1) ... Configuring already existing cluster (configuration: /etc/postgresql/8.4/main, data: /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main, owner: 108:112) Error: move_conffile: required configuration file /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main/postgresql.conf does not exist Error: could not create default cluster. Please create it manually with pg_createcluster 8.4 main --start or a similar command (see 'man pg_createcluster'). update-alternatives: using /usr/share/postgresql/8.4/man/man1/postmaster.1.gz to provide /usr/share/man/man1/postmaster.1.gz (postmaster.1.gz) in auto mode. Setting up postgresql (8.4.3-0ubuntu9.10.1) ... I have a "/etc/postgresql" with nothing in it and "/etc/postgresql-common/" has a 'pg_upgradecluser.d' directory and root.crt and user_clusters files. The /etc/passwd has a postgres user; the purge script doesn't appear to touch it. There's been a bunch of symptoms which I work through only to expose the next. Right this second, when I run that command "pg_createcluster..." it complains that '/var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main/postgresql.conf does not exist', so I'll go find one of those but I'm sure that won't be the end of it. Is there not some easy one-liner (or two) which will burn it completely and let me start over?

• Java: Reading images and displaying as an ImageIcon

  I'm writing an application which reads and displays images as ImageIcons (within a JLabel), the application needs to be able to support jpegs and bitmaps. For jpegs I find that passing the filename directly to the ImageIcon constructor works fine (even for displaying two large jpegs), however if I use ImageIO.read to get the image and then pass the image to the ImageIcon constructor, I get an OutOfMemoryError( Java Heap Space ) when the second image is read (using the same images as before). For bitmaps, if I try to read by passing the filename to ImageIcon, nothing is displayed, however by reading the image with ImageIO.read and then using this image in the ImageIcon constructor works fine. I understand from reading other forum posts that the reason that the two methods don't work the same for the different formats is down to java's compatability issues with bitmaps, however is there a way around my problem so that I can use the same method for both bitmaps and jpegs without an OutOfMemoryError? (I would like to avoid having to increase the heap size if possible!)   I am new to CUDA and I want to use cudaHostAlloc. I was able to isolate my problem to this following code. Using malloc for host allocation works, using cudaHostAlloc results in a segfault, possibly because the area allocated is invalid? • Google map API v3 event click raise when clickingMarkerClusterer?

  I have a Google Map API v3 map object on a page that uses MarkerClusterer. I have a function that need to run when we click on the map to it is registered as: google.maps.event.addListener(map, 'click', function (event) { CallMe(event.latLng); }); So my problem is as follows: When I click on a cluster of MarkerClusterer instead of behaving like a marker and not raise the click event on the map but only the one from the marker it calls the click from the map. To test this I have generated an alert from the markerclusterer click: google.maps.event.addListener(markerClusterer, "clusterclick", function (cluster) { alert('MarkerClusterer click event'); }); So the clusterclick rises after the click event of map object. I then can't remove the listener of map object as a solution. Is there any way to test if there was a clusterer click in the click event of the map? Or a way to replicate the marker behaviour and do not raise the click event of map when clustererclick is called? Google and documentation didn’t help me. Thx

• Ivy failed to resolve dependency : What to check, what to do ?

  Hi everyone, I'm using Ivy to resolve dependency in my very small project. It's the first time I'm doing that and it's more to learn as my project is very small. I had a problem 5 minutes ago, when trying to download log4j. • Java: how to debug an invalid JSTL declaration?

  I've seen this kind of issue on SO (and on the Net overall) quite a few times. For example here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1884529 Earlier today I was trying on a JSP (regular .jsp, not .jspx) to do this, because I stupidly cut/pasted some example found on the net: <%@ taglib prefix = "c" uri = "http://java.sun.com/jstl/core"%> Then my .jsp was giving a blank page. No error message in the Tomcat log. No nothing. Just a blank page. While, of course (I'm being sarcastic here), the correct line was this: <%@ taglib prefix = "c" uri = "http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core"%> There was a "jsp/" missing (which I found a hint to in yet another SO question). So obviously such issues are common. I can't believe you have to wait for things "not to work" to know you've there's an error and I'm honestly a bit confuzzabled by the number of questions found on the net (and here on SO) where the answer is basically "fix your declaration". My question here is simple: how do you know that it's a declaration issue? What thought process is required here to diagnose and troubleshoot such issues? Are there tools that can help here? (I don't know, like, say, IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse or Emacs in nxml-mode warning you in real time that the declared URI is invalid?)

• Cassandra hot keyspace structure change

  Hello. I'm currently running a 12-node Cassandra cluster storing 4TB of data, with a replication factor set to 3. For the needs of an application update, we need to change the configuration of our keyspace, and we'd like to avoid any downtime if possible. I read on a mailing list that the best way to do it is to: Kill cassandra process on one server of the cluster Start it again, wait for the commit log to be written on the disk, and kill it again Make the modifications in the storage.xml file Rename or delete the files in the data directories according to the changes we made Start cassandra Goto 1 with next server on the list My questions would be: Did I understand the process well? Is there any risk of data corruption? During the process, there will be servers with different versions of the storage.xml file in the same cluser, same keyspace. Is it a problem? Same question as above if we not only add, rename and remove ColumnFamilies, but if we change the CompareWith parameter / transform an existing column family into a super one. Or do we need to change the name? Thank you for your answers. It's the first time I'll do this, and I'm a little bit scared.

• Does Java 6 open a default port for JMX remote connections?

  My specific question has to do with JMX as used in JDK 1.6: if I am running a Java process using JRE 1.6 with com.sun.management.jmxremote in the command line, does Java pick a default port for remote JMX connections? Backstory: I am currently trying to develop a procedure to give to a customer that will enable them to connect to one of our processes via JMX from a remote machine. The goal is to facillitate their remote debugging of a situation occurring on a real-time display console. Because of their service level agreement, they are strongly motivated to capture as much data as possible and, if the situation looks too complicated to fix quickly, to restart the display console and allow it to reconnect to the server-side. I am aware the I could run jconsole on JDK 1.6 processes and jvisualvm on post-JDK 1.6.7 processes given physical access to the console. However, because of the operational requirements and people problems involved, we are strongly motivated to grab the data that we need remotely and get them up and running again. EDIT: I am aware of the command line port property com.sun.management.jmxremote.port=portNum The question that I am trying to answer is, if you do not set that property at the command line, does Java pick another port for remote monitoring? If so, how could you determine what it might be?

• What is optimal hardware configuration for heavy load LAMP application

  I need to run Linux-Apache-PHP-MySQL application (Moodle e-learning platform) for a large number of concurrent users - I am aiming 5000 users. By concurrent I mean that 5000 people should be able to work with the application at the same time. "Work" means not only do database reads but writes as well. The application is not very typical, since it is doing a lot of inserts/updates on the database, so caching techniques are not helping to much. We are using InnoDB storage engine. In addition application is not written with performance in mind. For instance one Apache thread usually occupies about 30-50 MB of RAM. I would be greatful for information what hardware is needed to build scalable configuration that is able to handle this kind of load. We are using right now two HP DLG 380 with two 4 core processors which are able to handle much lower load (typically 300-500 concurrent users). Is it reasonable to invest in this kind of boxes and build cluster using them or is it better to go with some more high-end hardware? I am particularly curious how many and how powerful servers are needed (number of processors/cores, size of RAM) what network equipment should be used (what kind of switches, network cards) any other hardware, like particular disc storage solutions, etc, that are needed Another thing is how to put together everything, that is what is the most optimal architecture. Clustering with MySQL is rather hard (people are complaining about MySQL Cluster, even here on Stackoverflow).

Is there anything like a checksum for the class file? I looked up the format of a classfile in http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jvms/second_edition/html/ClassFile.doc.html but could not find anything which points out to some kind of bytes_of_classfile or something. I also don't understand why the error is "Truncated Class File", because I did append something :-) I know its not a good idea to edit class files directly, but I'm just interested on the VM internals here.

• JOGL: cannot run java on compiled class file

  I am running ubuntu Linux 11.10. I have followed the instructions on the site http://jogamp.org/jogl/www/ and downloaded everything with git to $HOME/jogamp and built everything with ant (although I would have prefered the files installed somewhere under /usr/local). I am trying to run a simple application with JOGL found on the Wikipedia site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_OpenGL In order to compile the file I had to add: export CLASSPATH.:$HOME/jogamp/jogl/build/jogl/classes in order to compile the code.
