• How can I work efficiently on a desktop sharing workflow?

  I am a freelance Magento developer, based in Spain. One of my clients is a Germany based web development company and they're asking me something I think it's impossible. OK, maybe not impossible but definitely not a preferred way of doing things. One of their clients has a Magento Entreprise installation, which is the paid (and I think proprietary) version of Magento. Their client has forbidden them to download the files from his server. My client is asking me now to study one particular module of the application in order to interact with it from a custom module I'll have to develop. As they have a read-only ssh access to their client's server, they came up with this solution: Set up a desktop/screen sharing session between one of their developer's station and mine, alongsides with a skype conversation. Their idea is that I'll say to the developer: show me file foo.php The developer will then open this foo.php file in his IDE. I'll have then to ask him to show me the bar method, the parent class, etc... Remember that it's a read-only session, so forget about putting a Zend_Debug::log() anywhere, and don't even think about a xDebug breakpoint (they don't use any kind of debugger, sic). Their client has also forbidden them to use any version control system... My first reaction when they explained to me this was (and I actually did say it outloud to them): Well, find another client. but they took it as a joke from me. I understand that in a business point of view rejecting a client is not a good practice, but I think that the condition of this assignment make it impossible to complete. At least according to my workflow. I mean, the way I work or learn a new framework/program is: download all files and copy of db on my pc create a git repository and a branch run the application locally use breakpoints use Zend_Debug::log() write the code and tests commit to git repo upload to (test/staging first if there is one, production if not) server I have agreed to try the desktop sharing session, although I think it will be a waste of time. On one hand I don't mind, they pay me for that time, but I know me and I don't like the sensation of loosing my time. On the other hand, I have other clients for whom I can work according to my workflow. I am about to say to them that I cannot (don't want to) do it. Well, I'll first try this desktop sharing session: maybe I'm wrong and it can actually work. But I like to consider myself as a professional, and I know that I don't know everything. So I try to keep an open mind and I am always willing to learn new stuff. So my questions are: Can this desktop-sharing workflow work? What should be done in order to take the most of it? Taking into account all the obstacles (geographic locations, no local, no git), is there another way for me to work on that project?

• Too complex/too many objects?

  I know that this will be a difficult question to answer without context, but hopefully there are at least some good guidelines to share on this. The questions are at the bottom if you want to skip the details. Most are about OOP in general. Begin context. I am a jr dev on a PHP application, and in general the devs I work with consider themselves to use many more OO concepts than most PHP devs. Still, in my research on clean code I have read about so many ways of using OO features to make code flexible, powerful, expressive, testable, etc. that is just plain not in use here. The current strongly OO API that I've proposed is being called too complex, even though it is trivial to implement. The problem I'm solving is that our permission checks are done via a message object (my API, they wanted to use arrays of constants) and the message object does not hold the validation object accountable for checking all provided data. Metaphorically, if your perm containing 'allowable' and 'rare but disallowed' is sent into a validator, the validator may not know to look for 'rare but disallowed', but approve 'allowable', which will actually approve the whole perm check. We have like 11 validators, too many to easily track at such minute detail. So I proposed an AtomicPermission class. To fix the previous example, the perm would instead contain two atomic permissions, one wrapping 'allowable' and the other wrapping 'rare but disallowed'. Where previously the validator would say 'the check is OK because it contains allowable,' now it would instead say '"allowable" is ok', at which point the check ends...and the check fails, because 'rare but disallowed' was not specifically okay-ed. Not that I expect to get more than 'it depends, I'd have to see if...' when is OO abstraction too much? when is OO abstraction too little? how can I determine when I am overthinking a problem vs fixing one? how can I determine when I am adding bad code to a bad project? how can I pitch these APIs? I feel the other devs would just rather say 'its too complicated' than ask 'can you explain it?' whenever I suggest a new class.

• From AutoComplete textbox to database search and display?

  Hello everyone, I have a small problem so I would be grateful if anyone could help me in any way. Thank you ;) I have this little "application", and I want when someone type in a AutoComplete textbox for example "New" it automatically displays "New York" as a option and that (AutoComplete function) works fine. But I want when user type in full location (or AutoComplete do it for him) - that text (location) input is forwarded to a database search which then searches through database and "collects" all rows with user-typed location. For example if user typed in "New York", database search would find all rows with "New York" in it. When it finds one/more row(s) it would display them below. In images... • Facebook Connect login button not rendering

  I'm trying to implement a Facebook Connect Single Sign-on site. I originally just had a Connect button (<fb:login-button>), which the user had to click every time they wanted to sign in. I now have the auto login and logout features working. That is, my site will detect a logged-in Facebook account and automatically authenticate them if it can find a match to one of my site's user accounts, and automatically deauthenticate if the Facebook session is lost. I also have a manual logout button that will log the user out of both my site and Facebook. All of those are working correctly, but now my original Connect button is intermittently not being rendered correctly. It just shows up as the plain XHTML (ie., it looks like plain text--not a button--and is unclickable), and no XFBML is applied. I can log in and out of Facebook on another tab and my site will notice the session changes and update accordingly. The logout seems to be working fine: when clicked, it deauthenticates the user and logs them out of Facebook, as intended. The issue seems to usually happen after a Facebook user is logged out, but it happens somewhat intermittently; it might happen before they ever login, and it goes away after a few minutes/refreshes. Some cookies are left over after the login/logout process, but deleting them does not fix the issue. Restarting the browser does not fix the issue. The user is definitely logged out of Facebook and my site when the problem occurs. I've checked for Facebook sessions and site authentication. All external script calls are being served up correctly. I have a suspicion that there's something else I need to be doing upon logout (like clearing session or cookies), but according to everything I've read about Facebook Connect, all I need to do is call the logout function (and deauthenticate on my server-side). I'm really at a loss; does anybody have any ideas what could be wrong?

• ExpressionEngine Segment Variables Lost on Site Index Page

  Hey Everyone, I've been messing with this for days now and can't seem to figure it out. I am trying to pass a 2nd segment variable to my client's index page. The URL I'm trying is: http://www.compupay.com/site/CSCPA/. The problem is, rather than showing the site's index page with the segment variable of "CSCPA" still in the URL, it shows the index page with no segment variables. Initially, I thought it was a .htaccess problem but I couldn't find anything in it that seemed out of whack. Any ideas? I am posting the .htaccess file so another pair of eyes can see it. • Why ????? is displayed instead of non-english characters?

  I first created a simple HTML page that uses UTF-8 as its character encoding. Then I moved the HTML content as a view in codeigniter and it was still ok (I had used non-english characters that were ok as always) I added a simple dynamic functionality (there is a contact us form in it that emails users feedback to site admin). Please note that the characters were ok at localhost (which is a LAMP server running on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) Strange is that when I uploaded the app to server, all persian characters are shown as ???? (For example ??? (which means Name) is shown ??? and so so...) I have not even connected to mysql or any other DBMS. It's the only page in the website (it's more an under construction page) and nothing else has been used in it. Maybe I should state that I have also used session library to thank the user after his feedback was sent to admins, nothing else. I have really no idea about the problem. UPDATE Now I can see that the problem is only with cPanel. On Directadmin I can see that everything is normal. Both Chromium and Firefox DO use UTF-8 as page's character encoding. URL is http://WEBSITE.COM/dmf/dynamic/ (dmf is the abbreviation of the project name!). There is nothing non-english in the URL. • Polymorphic associations in CakePHP2

  I have 3 models, Page , Course and Content Page and Course contain meta data and Content contains HTML content. Page and Course both hasMany Content Content belongsTo Page and Course To avoid having page_id and course_id fields in Content (because I want this to scale to more than just 2 models) I am looking at using Polymorphic Associations. I started by using the Polymorphic Behavior in the Bakery but it is generating waaay too many SQL queries for my liking and it's also throwing an "Illegal Offset" error which I don't know how to fix (it was written in 2008 and nobody seems to have referred to it recently so perhaps the error is due to it not having been designed for Cake 2?) I have checked each n everything... One thing is that the code works fine on FF too only when i debug the page with firebug debugger. Otherwise the alert in ajax success shows itself with nothing in it... Help me... Goto link text Enter 6628 in the Ticket No. box under Update Complaint Status section... A new form will open. In that form press update... Try it in FF and IE... IE8 shows the results as needed but FF does not...
