• Why ping another innet machine from MacBook get netgate's ip address?

  I have three machine in my home network connected by a wireless router. One is server installed linux at 192.168.1.1, another is Thinkpad with MS Windows XP at 192.168.1.2, last one is MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.3 at 192.168.1.3. When I ping the Linux Server from Thinkpad (MS Windows XP) I can get the correct ip address, but when I ping it from Mac I get the global address of my router, like 61.135.181.175. Could you tell me why this happen? And how do I get same ping result on Mac and Windows. Thanks

  I need to split some info from a asterisk delimitted data. Data Format: NAME*ADRESS LINE1*ADDRESS LINE2 Rules: 1. Name should be always present 2. Address Line 1 and 2 might not be 3. There should be always three asterisks. Samples: MR JONES A ORTEGA*ADDRESS 1*ADDRESS2* Name: MR JONES A ORTEGA Address Line1: ADDRESS 1 Address Line2: ADDRESS 2 A PAUL*ADDR1** Name: A PAUL Address Line1: ADDR1 Address Line2: Not Given My algo is: 1. Iterate through the characters in the line 2. Store all chars in a temp variables until first * is found. Reject the data if no char is found before first occurence of asterisk. If some chars found, use it as the name. 3. Same as step 2 for finding address line 1 and 2 except that this won't reject the data if no char is found My algo looks ugly. The code looks uglier. Spliting using //* doesn't work either since name can be replaced with address line 1 if the data was *Address 1*Address2. Any suggestion?

  We are a small office set up with two PC's out of which one of my PCs runs 24hrs. Its almost equivalent to a small server, but right now we're in need of a server which is why I am planning to keep my machine as well as a server into a single PC. I've used VMware Workstation to create a powerful Windows Server 2008 within my PC and I want to attach it to my Network Switch through the same PC where I am hosting it. I want to use it almost like a physical server with an IP address and everything so that I can connect from one Pc to the Server directly or my applications can connect to Server straight with the IP address.   I set up an ubuntu 9.10 - apache2 - php5 server. I was under the impression that each valid SSL certificate (no domain wild cards) required it's own unique IP address and port number combination. But the answer to a previous question I posted is at odds with this claim: http://serverfault.com/questions/109766/ssl-site-not-using-the-correct-ip-in-apache-and-ubuntu Using the accepted answer, I was able to get multiple domains, each with it's own valid SSL to work on the same IP address and on port 443. I am very confused as to why the above answer works, especially after hearing from others that each SSL domain website on the same server requires its own IP+port combination. I am suspicious that I did something wrong. Can someone clear up the confusion? Websites currently using different SSL but on the same IP and Port are: https://www.yummyskin.com/ https://staging.bossystem.org/

I am using Selenium RC and the PHPUnit Selenium extension. How can I achieve this? • What's a way for a client to automatically resolve the ip address of a server?

  The project I am working on is a client/server architecture. In a LAN environment, I want the client's to be able to automatically determine the server's address. I want to avoid having to manually configure each client with the ip address of the server. What is the best way to do this? Some alternatives I have thought about doing are: The server could listen for broadcast packets from the clients. The message from the client would be a request for the IP address of the server. The server would respond with its address. The machine running my project's server could also have a bind server running. The LAN's router could be configured to use it as one of its DNS servers. I think I saw that there is a bind library. Does that mean I can build the bind service into my server so that bind doesn't have to be installed on the server? Any other ideas? What have you done in the past? What are the pros/cons of these approaches and others that might be suggested? Thanks for your help!

  Open Firmware device tree gives no clue what device might decode at physical address 0x80000000 to 0x8008200 on a G4 New World Macintosh. The mmu has three adjacent Virtual=Real translations for that block. They are the only address translations reported between the top or physical dram at 20000000 and the start of the PCI bridges at f0000000. (A possible clue is that frame-buffer-addr is reported as 9c008000 by Open Firmware, and that is not in the reported translation table either). I believe the architecture has been around since about 1999.

This is bad, it is not recognized by the fxcop - I need a space there. Now, this is a simple example, so I could just declare something like this: <PropertyGroup> <R>/ruleid:-Microsoft.Design#CA1000 /ruleid:-Microsoft.Design#CA1002</R </PropertyGroup> But, I do not like this, because in reality I have many rules I wish to disable and listing all of them like this is something I wish to avoid.

  I've been using Phusion Passenger + Rails/Sinatra for a lot of projects. Passenger runs under the main Nginx or Apache process. But I'm interested in Unicorn, partly because it runs in user space. You just set up Nginx to proxy_pass requests to a unix socket that is connected to Unicorn processes that you fire up under a normal user account. Is there anything to be said as far as advantages and disadvantages of these two alternative approaches to running an web app? I mean in terms of ease of administration, stability, simplicity, etc.

  I want to experiment with creating a web crawler. I'll start with indexing a few medium sized website like Stack Overflow or Smashing Magazine. If it works, I'd like to start crawling the entire web. I'll respect robot.txts. I save all html, pdf, word, excel, powerpoint, keynote, etc... documents (not exes, dmgs etc, just documents) in a MySQL DB. Next to that, I'll have a second table containing all restults and descriptions, and a table with words and on what page to find those words (aka an index). How much HDD space do you think I need to save all the pages? Is it as low as 1 TB or is it about 10 TB, 20? Maybe 30? 1000? Thanks

  Hello, I am on Linux and need to know either of the two things: 1) If i have a regular file on some file system on a partition under Linux is there a way to know the set of the physical blocks that this file occupies on the drive from user space? Or at least the set of the file system's clusters? 2) Is there a way to get the same information about the whole free space of the given file system? In both cases i understand that if there is any possible way to extract this info it will probably be totally unsafe and racy (anything could happen to these set of blocks between the time i see them and act on them somehow). I also really don't want an implementation that will have to know a lot about every filesystem.

• Word 2007 "Out of Memory or Disk Space" Error on launch.

  Word 2007 is installed on a Vista Home Premium machine and whenever it starts up it opens what appears to be a dynamic installer to do something and then throws up the "Out of Memory or Disk Space" error. Word 2007 never completes starting up. Reinstalling Word hasn't helped and if I can avoid reinstalling Windows until Windows 7 is released and get Word working in the mean time, that would be ideal. I've been looking around for a solution, once of which seemed to point to a problem with the user account. I created a second user on the machine and Word still had the same problem. The other solution that seems possible is a corrupted normal.dot/normal.dotm file. However, even in the location it should be, I can't seem to find it. Am I going in the right direction with this? Is there another solution I haven't come across that will fix this? If it is possible that renaming normal.dot/normal.dotm how can I find it?

So I've got a router (say for the sake of argument a 4500 running IOS 15.x) It has interfaces in 3 different subnets -- 10.0.0.1/24, 10.0.1.1/24, and 10.0.2.1/24 It also has a loopback address of 172.16.0.33 How do I make it so that SSH / SNMP and other administrative traffic works on the 172 address but doesn't work on the IP addresses I wish to only use for L3 forwarding? Ideally this can be done by disabling the control plane access to these interfaces not just by using an ACL, but whatever, I don't actually care that much as long as it works... Thanks!

I currently know of two way: open/close/read/write/ioctl on published device node. read/write on exported and hooked /proc file. More specifically, can someone advice the best way to communicate with a kernel module that does not actually drives any hardware and therefore should not be littering /dev with stub nodes that exists solely for ioctl calls? I mostly need to check its various status variables and send it a block of data with a request type tag and see if the request succeeded. Inso.

  I'm reviewing some apache logs, specifically with respect to downloaded files. I'm interested in knowing, if possible, which domain is responsible for the download, given an IP address. I've given nslookup a try and it seems to (mostly) get the job done but it returns all sorts of extraneous information. Ideally, I pass in an IP and receive a domain back. Before I write a shell script to parse the output of nslookup to capture the domain, I'd like to know if this is the best way of approaching this problem, or if there is a more tried-and-true method of doing this. Specifically, I'd like to know if an address resolves to an amazonaws.com domain. I understand that this might be difficult because EC2 machines are dynamically created and destroyed - I'd like to know if the IP addresses for AWS/EC2/EMR machines fit any sort of addressing pattern.

  I've noticed that email forwarding to an address seems not to work if I send an email from the address to which I am forwarding email. This happens for GMail and Fasthosts mail servers. e.g I send an email to [email protected] from [email protected] , [email protected] is set to forward to [email protected] and the email never arrives. I realise this seems logical but it is a potential cause of confusion when testing email functionality in a web application (for me, anyway ;-). This means that I should be able to catch all mails sent to an arbitrary userid and/or arbitrary domain and store them into a single Google Apps account.   My root partition was filling up, with only 500 mbs left, I wanted to resize my root partition from 20 Gb to 40Gb So I resized my partition by using these steps: Using Gparted to resize another partition to give space for the EXT4 Using fdisk, deleting the root partition (on /dev/sda2), and creating it again using the new size resize2fs /dev/sda2 Updating grub2 But now the problem is that although I can boot in my new partition and the new partition shows it is 40Gb, but the free size was still 500mb. So I booted from a LiveCD and checked with e2fsck -p /dev/sda2, it reported clean. So I added the -f flag (force check), still, the drive is full.

• In CentOS 4.3 Webmin 1.3000 bandwidth monitoring is eating disk space. How to delete those files?

  I maintain Linux server being used for Mail, Squid and DNS service. Recently I observed that something was eating server disk space. But at last, today I caught the culprit which was consuming the disk by storing large number of files. On this server, Webmin 1.300 is installed. We use Squid proxy and Sarg to monitor Internet access. I always manually clear Sarg generated files under /var/www/html/squid for last few years. But I never realized that Webmin is also storing some kind of bandwidth log files in its' directory structure. I have noticed that under /etc/webmin/bandwidth/hours it has stored more thousands of files since year 2007 totaling about 17 GB. We have used 40 GB HDD for this server machine. My question is how can I delete those (/etc/webmin/bandwidth/hours) files safely?
