  • You've been working on a platform for as long as you remember. Not anymore. How does it feel?

    How does it feel to work on a platform for as long as you remember, you've been encouraged to innovate, to improve and give all in day and night for that platform, be it either an operating system, a hardware architecture or a software framework/library and then be forced to switch bases because that platform has been abandoned over the night? It has happened before, many times, for eg. to SGI/IRIX and more recently to SUN/Open Solaris and now Nokia/Symbian. Have you been part of such a shift? If so then please share the story and describe your feelings at that time and if it is the case, how did you manage the situation? Reorientation? Giving up on the field and turned to other things you've been constantly putting aside like family? Many did so(for eg. people at Netscape). You may not think of it being such a big deal, but it is, after you've been working 10 to 20+ years on a platform/technology and then be faced to switch your expertise and mindset, the feeling tends to become really strong and some people really give up this crazy field and start enojoying a normal life. Would love to hear your stories.

  • Javascript is not loading

    Hey, I've got a problem with JavaScript under Ubuntu, that drives me crazy. I'm using Gedit for my web sites since I'm an Ubuntu user. When I start a new website I create (usually with the gnome terminal) folder structure, and I copy the files I need into them. The next step is creating an index.html where I build the design and basic JavaScript functionality. JavaScript is stored in a sub-folder of the project and when i try to load one using the tag in the header, my whole page body disappears. If the source contains a script tag with its own body, and its not the first its code wont run. I've tried to solve the problem by setting chmod to 777 with sudo chmod -R 777 . but nothing changed. CSS is loading correctly, but JS isn't. I'm using the newest version of apache, no mod_rewrite stuff, but i get the same problem when I run the html from file (file:///...) Do anyone know how to solve this problem?

  • How to avoid automatic renaming of sub signature parameters in visual basic 6.

    In Visual basic 6, i declare a sub like this: Private Sub test1(ByRef XmlFooOutput As String) ... End Sub after that, i declare another sub like the following one: Private Sub test2(ByRef xmlFooOutput As String) ... End Sub automagically, the first method is transformed in: Private Sub test1(ByVal xmlFooOutput As String) ... End Sub so the XmlFooOutput parameter is transformed in xmlFooOutput. This is a pretty dangerous feature because, method like those could be mapped to different XSL presentation files that read XML values through Xpath. So when test1 parameter is renamed, XSL bound to test1 method goes broken because Xpath point to XmlFooOuput but the correct value is now in xmlFooOutput. Is it possible to remove this weird feature? I'm using microsoft visual basic 6.0 (SP6).     I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those. How does annotations works specifically with Spring framework ? Can annotations be used outside Spring Framework or are they Framework specific ?     After hearing about the success of IBM's Watson I started thinking perhaps emulating human language is now possible? My goal is to create Virtual Historical characters to represent the main characters in my Adventur-Cation The Great American Adventure program such as Einstein or Crazy Horse. The goal is to build an intelligent system capable of indexing the internet and storing the data using a schema using modern knowledge on linguistic theory (phonemes, morphemes, syntax) to build a system capable to returning a semantically sound response very similar to the response made by the same person if still alive today. The goal would be to use the same engine/system for all characters. Each characters would have their own digital representation and voice, and would organize data differently based on tags/keywords stored about the individual. Imagine a Max Headroom Einstein. Based on the success of Watson, I believe something like this may now be possible. Would be an interesting way to study history and would be a vehicle of entertainment as well. Can anyone confirm if this has already been attempted? Is anyone interested in exploring this using Cognitive Science, Psychology, Artificial Intelligence, Historical data captured on the internet, and Linguistic theory?

    I have some questions on Composite Primary Keys and the cardinality of the columns. I searched the web, but did not find any definitive answer, so I am trying again. The questions are: Context: Large (50M - 500M rows) OLAP Prep tables, not NOSQL, not Columnar. MySQL and DB2 1) Does the order of keys in a PK matter? 2) If the cardinality of the columns varies heavily, which should be used first. For example, if I have CLIENT/CAMPAIGN/PROGRAM where CLIENT is highly cardinal, CAMPAIGN is moderate, PROGRAM is almost like a bitmap index, what order is the best? 3) What order is the best for Join, if there is a Where clause and when there is no Where Clause (for views) Thanks in advance.

I've included some background notes on exceptions, skip this if you want, but please take a moment to read the questions and respond to them. Thanks. Background on Perl Exceptions Perl has a very basic built-in exception system that provides a spring-board for more sophisticated usage. For example die "I ate a bug.\n"; throws an exception with a string assigned to $@. You can also throw an object, instead of a string: die BadBug->new('I ate a bug.'); You can even install a signal handler to catch the SIGDIE psuedo-signal. Here's a handler that rethrows exceptions as objects if they aren't already. $SIG{__DIE__} = sub { my $e = shift; $e = ExceptionObject->new( $e ) unless blessed $e; die $e; } This pattern is used in a number of CPAN modules. but perlvar says: Due to an implementation glitch, the $SIG{DIE} hook is called even inside an eval(). Do not use this to rewrite a pending exception in $@ , or as a bizarre substitute for overriding CORE::GLOBAL::die() . This strange action at a distance may be fixed in a future release so that $SIG{DIE} is only called if your program is about to exit, as was the original intent. Any other use is deprecated. So now I wonder if objectifying exceptions in sigdie is evil. The Questions Do you use exception objects? If so, which one and why? If not, why not? If you don't use exception objects, what would entice you to use them? If you do use exception objects, what do you hate about them, and what could be better? Is objectifying exceptions in the DIE handler a bad idea? Where should I objectify my exceptions? In my eval{} wrapper? In a sigdie handler? Are there any papers, articles or other resources on exceptions in general and in Perl that you find useful or enlightening.

  • Time Complexities of recursive algorithms

    Whenever I see a recursive solution, or I write recursive code for a problem, it is really difficult for me to figure out the time complexity, in most of the cases I just say its exponential? How is it exponential actually? How people say it is 2^n, when it is n!, when it is n^n or n^k. I have some questions in mind, let say find all permutations of a string (O(n!)) find all sequences which sum up to k in an array (exponential, how exactly do I calculate). Find all subsets of size k whose sum is 0 (will k come somewhere in complexity , it should come right?). Can any1 help me how to calculate the exact complexity of such questions, I am able to wrote code for them , but its hard understanding the exact time complexity.

  • How to handle Many-To-Many In Grails without belongsTo?

    I need to create a many-to-many relationship in Grails. I have a "Question" domain and a "Tag" domain. A Question can have 0 or more tags. A Tag can have 0 or more Questions. If I put a "hasMany" on each sides, it gives me an error saying I need a "belongTo" somewhere. However, adding a belongsTo means that the owner must exist... Like I said, a Tag could have 0 questions, and a Question could have 0 tags. There is no concept of an owner, it's a many-to-many! What am I supposed to do?

  • How do I get HDMI output working on a Dell XPS 15 L502x?

    Recently I've bought my dream's notebook, a Dell XPS 15 but since then this dream became a kind of endless nightmare. I'm almost getting crazy to make my graphic card driver work properly, but it seems to be just impossible. Yes, I have a 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540m (Optimus) in it! It simply doesn't work. Every time I generate the xorg.conf Ubuntu hangs on while starting up, which forces me to remove this file to be able to start the notebook with the standard graphic settings. Another problem is that the Dell XPS 15 does NOT have a VGA output, but a HDMI. So, to be able to use a second monitor I have to configure it by the NVIDIA X Server Settings, which just works if the driver is properly initialized with the xorg.conf. I've also tried to make it work with the Bumblebee, but unfortunately it didn't help me much with the HDMI output. Do you guys have any idea to solve this deadlock? Is there any way for me to use my second monitor?

    so I recently had my question deleted and merged into a standard how to for blank screens. I am relatively new to This type of computer work and i don't understand the steps nessary to diagnose my problem well enough to solve it so this help full how to has me feeling helpless I can use Ctrl + Alt +F1 and log in So how do I use sudo commands to fix the blank screen on my old dell? sudo lsoci -nn tells me my video card is a ATI rage 128 pro ultra tf /var/log/Xorg.0.log tells me Permission denied that is all i get Sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity tried thay also have also tried Apt-get update and upgrade Please dont close this question without providing an actual answer or if you think it is an exact duplicate provide a solution that worked for that question. I see a lot of these questions as closed and there is no real answer given I will try any solutions available and report results so that others can also solve problems not be overwhelmed by overly broad troubleshooting guides that do nothing to help solve specific issues The nomodeset change from quiet splash also yields no results on reboot I still get a blank screen this screen still has contorl alt f1 abilities but that is it contorl alt f8 causes blinking cursor and F7 gets a crazy flash with green and blue then blank screen Contorl alt f1 a log in prompt in text only when run in recovery mode with failsafe graphics its says the syestem is running in low graphics mode your screen graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these your self how do i do that? I got this /var/log/failsafeX-backup-120909200641.tar as the location of my log files but i have no idea how to axcess sounds work in blank screen also screen responds or flashes after log in is typed and password entered really any help is good I don't even know where to start I believe 12.04 is installed and functioning but i don't think I can see it at the end of the error log it says error setting mtrr (base= oxf0000000, size= 0x01000000, type=1) inappropriate ioctl for device(25) i have tried to provide as much info as I understand how to provide

  • YUI and/or jQuery for a new project?

    If I am starting a new project how should I pick between using YUI 2, YUI 3 and jQuery? I know there are a bunch of questions/answers already about can you use them together, but I am trying to figure out what criteria I should be thinking about to make my decision. Are they overlapping? Is one better at GUI and the other better at internals? Do they play well together? My understanding from other questions is that they can live in different namespaces, so they can live together, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is good to use both. Thanks!

    I'm trying to create a templated silverlight control that has a simple animation (swap a few color properties). An example would be a control that is similar to the 'questions' menu item in stackoverflow. So the consumer of the control can specify the background color and the background color for the mouseover event. I've run into the issue that I can't use template binding for a storyboard animation (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1336689/is-it-possible-to-use-templatebinding-in-a-storyboard-in-silverlight).   • How do you share pre-calculated data between calls to a Rails web service?

    I have a Rails app that allows users to build up a network structure and then ask questions about how to navigate around it. When adding nodes and connections these are just saved to the database. At the point you make a query of the network I calculate the shortest path from any node to any other node. Constructing this in memory takes a while (something I need to fix), but once it is there, you can instantly get the answer to any of these path questions. The question is... How do I share this network between calls to the website, so each request doesn't regenerate the paths network each time? Note: I am hosting this on apache server using passenger (mod ruby) Thoughts?

    Hi, I need to know what can be the main reasons (apart from the basics like grouping CSS selectors, reducing image size, using image sprite etc.) which makes a website slow on Internet Explorer, because my website works fine on the others like FF, chrome etc. Is it the huge use of Javascript framework (ie. jQuery, extjs, prototype)? Is it because of the use of plugins based on JS framework? Should I use core javascript and remove the use of any js framework? Should I try to avoid using jQuery(document).ready()? in case of jQuery framework? Above some of the questions which I know and please answer the questions which I couldn't ask because of lesser knowledge about these.   • Foreign Key vs. Independent Relationships - is there improvement with Entity Framework 5?

    I have read several articles and questions on concept of foreign key vs independent relationship when using Entity Framework. And I am still not 100% sure which way to go.... I would prefer not to "pollute" my domain POCOs by having a property that will be used in FK relationship when I already have a property reference to "has a" object. My questions are (looking at you @EFTeam, @Ladislav Mrnka) are there any improvements on this subject in the upcoming Entity Framework v5? are there more advantages if I use FK instead of independent associations (particularly with code first)?
