• What are the benefits of running chef-server instead of chef-solo?

  I am looking at automated deployment solutions for my team and have been playing with Chef for the past few days. I've been able to get a simple web app up an running from a base Red Hat VM using chef-solo. Our end goal is to use Chef (or another system) to automatically deploy application topologies to the cloud as we run builds. Our process would basically run like so: Our web app code, dependencies, and chef cookbooks are stored in SCM A build is executed and greats a single package for images to acquire and test against The build engine then deploys new cloud images that run a chef client to get packages installed. The images acquire the cookbooks from SCM or the Chef server and install everything to get up and running What are the benefits and/or use cases for getting a Chef Server running? Are there any major benefits to have a Chef Server hold and acquire the cookbooks from SCM vs. using chef-solo and having a script that will pull the cookbooks from SCM?

• What does the email header "X-CAA-SPAM" refer to?

  I've got an application that sends out notification emails to users of the application (this is not spam; the information in these emails is solicited and useful, and is also a feature turned off by default and must be enabled by the user). The app is still in beta, and one of our testers reports that the notification emails are going to his junk mail folder in Outlook 2003. This is the only reported case of this, but I asked him to send me the email headers from the message, and I noticed that there is a header there labeled "X-CAA-SPAM" with a value of 00000 . I'm a programmer, so I'm fairly green in the world of successful automated emails - does anyone know if this header is the culprit? If not, any suggestions?

• Is there a free-embedded SSH solution ?

  Hi, I'm working for an important company which has some severe network policies. I'd like to connect from my work, to my home linux server (mainly because it allows me to monitor my home-automated installation, but that's off-topic) but of course, any ssh connection (tcp port 22) to an external site is blocked. While I understand why this is done (to avoid ssh tunnels I guess), I really need to have some access to my box. (Well, "need" might be exagerated, but that would be nice ;) Do you know any web-based solution that I could install on my home linux server that would give me some pseudo-terminal (served using https) embedded in a web page ? I'm not necessarily looking for something graphical: a simple web-embedded ssh console would do the trick. Or do you guys see any other solution that wouldn't compromise network security ?   I'm not sure if this is possible, but this is my goal: At the end of the day, I want to be able to turn off all the computers in the domain from a client. My account has sufficient privileges to shutdown any single computer remotely using shutdown -I, and I can RDP into any computer in the domain. However, is there an automated technique that does this? the computers in the domain are predictably named (computer1, computer2, etc), but than manipulating a list of 2000 computers in shutdown -I is pretty clumsy. Is there a way to shutdown every single computer in the domain from a single client? The domain server is windows 2003, and the clients all run windows xp thanks

  I'm not entirely sure this is the right place for the is question but I cannot think of another so here goes. In order to login to the windows machines at my office one must press the almighty CTRL-ALT-DELETE command combo first. I, finding this very frustrating, decided to look into why and found claims from both my sys and Microsoft stating that it's a security feature and that "Because only windows could read the CTRL-ALT-DELETE it helped to ensure that an automated program cannot log in. Now I'm not a master of the windows operating system ( as I generally use *nix ) but I cannot believe that "Only windows can send that signal" bull. It just doesn't sit right. Is there a good reason for the CTRL-ALT-DELETE to login thing? is it something I'm missing? or is it another example of antiquated legacy security measures?

• Configure IIS to rewrite IP Address to Site Name

  So i've started my first web site from home, and I'm trying to get it up and running and google crawlable and the like, but I can't seem to figure out how to have my site name returned in the address bar instead of my IP address. I've purchased a domain name for my site on Godaddy and then set it to redirect to my site. When you type in the domain name, you get redirected to http://0.0.0.0/default.aspx (not my real IP obviously), and that stays in the user's address bar. In order to fix that temporarily, I've set up masking on Go Daddy which keeps the URL in the address bar, but just shows my website in a frame. This is fine for users visiting the site, however any kind of automated robot such as GoogleBot cannot discover my content because of the frame. I've looked into ISAPI filters and server-site-rewriting, and the like... but I just can't quite figure out how to do what I need it to do. Any simple suggestions or links would be appreciated.

• fsck: FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED after each check with -c, why?

  Hi I use a script to partition and format CF cards (connected with a USB card writer) in an automated way. After the main process I check the card again with fsck. To check bad blocks I also tried the '-c' switch, but I always get a return value != 0 and the message "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" (see below). I get the same result when checking the very same drive several times... Does anyone know why a) the file system is modified at all and b) why this seems to happen every time I check and not only in case of an error (like bad blocks)?   I want to acomplish something rather simple (at least it would seem to be): Compress a directory Encrypt the compressed file Upload the compressed & encrypted file via FTP I also want to acomplish this in an automated fashion on Linux server. TrueCrypt is not really an option as it seems it can't complress a single file, instead you have to make a volume that you mount and move the files into. This question answers how to do the the upload and I know how to compress a directory. It is just the encryption that's giving me problems.

• Mirror/Backup from SSH/SFTP to Windows

  What I am trying to do is mirror a directory (recursively) from a server I can SSH/SFTP to, to a Windows machine. I want to do this as part of a script, so it can be automated. I only want to copy new or modified files. I don't want to have to download all the files every time the script runs. In other words, I'm trying to get the equivalent of RoboCopy /MIR that will work using SFTP as a source. What would you recommend?

• Problem with kickstart

  Hi, I created a kickstart file ks.cfg and then I have put that in the bootable disk*(Ubuntu 10.04)* and then added the following line to the isolinux.cfg linux ks=ks.cfg and have not removed any other lines from the isoconfig.cfg file and then while installing the installation is not automated,again it is asking for language and all. If i removed include menu.cfg or any other line from isolinux.cfg i am getting a boot error. What should i do now to automate the installation.Where should i add the boot parameters so that installation will start from the ks.cfg . Thanks and Regards Ravi Kumar

  I would like to run my own DNS server in my laptop for learning purpose. I recently used Google Public DNS and liked it. I wanted to build some thing similar and small for my web browsing. What I vaguely dream of is to use my own DNS server as Primary DNS server and Google public DNS as secondary DNS server. I would like to build my own DNS server gradually by editing the configuration files (If it can be automated it will be great, but have no clues there). Sometimes it sounds like a stupid idea to me, but I am fine with editing config file for each site I want to add to my DNS server. Any pointers/suggestion is welcome.

• Automatically wake up notebooks not on the ethernet

  I am looking for an automated backup system and I like bacula. I have 3 Notebooks and a Desktop computer that need regular backup. Now I don't want to let them run all night just to do the backuping, so I was thinking I could use wake-on-lan to have bacula wake up the machines, then do the backups, and shut them down afterswards. While this may work with devices on the ethernet, it won't work with the Notebooks on the wifi. So is it possible to have the Notebooks schedules to automatically wake up from suspend or shutdown ? Or is it possible to interject a shutdown command if it is after a certain hour and call the bacula director to start the backup now? I'm new to controlling the linux system using scripts, so any hints on how and where to start are greatly appreciated. Thanks alot for your help, input and ideas.

• How should I setup separate mx records for a subdomain?

  Lets say I have a domain that I run a web app on, for example cranketywidgets.com, and I'm using google apps for handle email for people work work on that domain, i.e. support@ cranketywidgets.com, [email protected], [email protected] and so on. Google's own mail services aren't always the best for sending automated reminder emails, comment notifications and so on, so the current solution I plan to pursue is to create a separate subdomain called mailer.cranketywidgets.com, run a mail server off it, and create a few accounts specifically for sending these kinds of emails. What should the mx records and a records look like here for this? I'm somewhat confused by the fact that mx records can be names, but that they must eventually resolve to an A record. What should the records look like here? cranketywidgets.com - A record to actual server like 10.24.233.214 cranketywidgets.com - mx records for google's email apps mailer.cranketywidgets.com - mx name pointing to server's ip address Would greatly appeciate some help on this - the answer seems like it'll be obvious, but email spam is a difficult problem to solve.

  I would need to build a Linux server that will have as its main task to perform the video conversion. For video conversion, the most likely I will use FFMpeg tool. Question: Can anyone tell me if for improving this automated video conversion a video card will improve the process or not? • Suppressing / Accepting warning windows automatically in commands executed through batch file

  I am automating the uninstall of IE9 through executing the command in these instructions inside a batch file: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie9-windows_7/how-to-uninstall-ie9-beta-64-bit-it-is-not-in-the/863d8f3d-c4ab-43e6-9d57-e163ea3baddd The instructions say to run the command twice. The first time the command runs, I get the following error window (3 times): "Windows Package Manager Operation failed with 0x80070005 Access id denied." I click OK for each of these windows, and the rest of the script runs fine and IE8 is usable after restart. Is there a way to suppress these windows? I want this to be fully automated and these windows block the script until the user presses "OK".

On many gateways, I can only subscribe, put my mobile phone number as the sender after a verification process. The main problem is that the phone number verification is only available for my and not for my users. My customers can send an sms but the receiver does not see their mobile phone number in the "from" field. Do you know a good gateway which support that (in an automated way) ?   I've created a kickstart script to install CentOS 5.5 (32bit) in a fully automated way. The DNS/DHCP setup correctly gives the system the right hostname in both the forward and reverse lookups. dig node4.mydomain.com. +short 10.10.10.64 dig -x 10.10.10.64 +short node4.mydomain.com. In the state the installed system is right after the installation completed is as follows: cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes GATEWAY=10.10.10.1 HOSTNAME=node4.mydomain.com echo ${HOSTNAME} node4.mydomain.com cat /etc/hosts # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6 10.10.10.64 node4 My problem is that this automatically generated hosts file is slightly different from the way I want it (or better: the way Hadoop wants it). The last line should look like this: 10.10.10.64 node4.mydomain.com node4 What do I modify where to fix this? Thanks.

• Renting linux server just to make backups of my personnal data ?

  Hi all, I would like to be able to backup ALL my computers data on a Linux server. For now, I have a home server, but soon I will be travelling, without home (so no home server). I was thinking of renting a dedicated linux webserver, but this is expensive, and I don't need a fast machine "web-oriented" with mysql server and all, I just need a full SSH access (full control, and then I install my programs). Does "backup servers" exist ? Am I doing it wrong (maybe that is not a good solution) ? Note : I run Mac OS, Windows and Linux, I backup through rsync, I want full control on my backup, not an automated "magic" backup like MobileMe or anything like that. • ZFS and SAN -- best practices?

  Most discussions of ZFS suggest that the hardware RAID be turned off and that ZFS should directly talk to the disks and manage the RAID on the host (instead of the RAID controller). This makes sense on a computer with 2-16 or even more local disks, but what about in an environment with a large SAN? For example, the enterprise I work for has what I would consider to be a modest sized SAN with 2 full racks of disks, which is something like 400 spindles. I've seen SAN shelves that are way more dense than ours, and SAN deployments way larger than ours. Do people expose 100 disks directly to big ZFS servers? 300 disks? 3000 disks? Do the SAN management tools facilitate automated management of this sort of thing?

• How to give a Linux user permission to create backups, but not permission to delete them?

  I want to set up automated backups that are kept safe from myself (in case a virus pwns me). The problem is the "create" and "delete" permissions are the same thing: write permission. So what can I do about it? Is it possible to decouple the create/delete permissions? Another option could be to let the user "root" make the backups. The problem is my home directory is encrypted, and I don't want to backup everything. Any ideas? For the backups I'm using Deja Dup, which is installed by default in Fedora and Ubuntu.

• firefox: getting access to the list of tabs/windows to restore on startup

  Sometimes ffox fails to restore the previously open tabs/windows. This might be happening when some of the urls to be opened are no longer reachable (e.g. behind a vpn) or after the underlying OS (Windows) has been forcibly restarted (e.g. to complete an automated patch installation). Anyway, after restarting, can this list of urls be recovered somehow? Say for example, I was daft enough to have clicked on "start new session". Can I still get access to the old list of open urls? There is the browser history of course, but it contains a lot of stuff - the urls that were open when ffox last exited are not obvious. It would be neat if they were marked in some way - tagged for example. .robb

• DNS and IPs - Does DNS send the IP back to the client?

  I ran across a site that talked about routing all cients requesting by IP to a "dead end." The clients accessing the site via ip it claimed were typically automated exploit tools and bots. Legitimate users type in the web address by it's domain question. With this context in mind, I don't really understand how DNS really works. I thought it worked by sending an IP back to a client for the requested DNS (like a phone book.) The client then uses the IP to access the site. • 'Game Show' presentation

  I work at a state university, and every day of summer orientation we have a little jeopardy-like game that new students' parents play. We run it in an auditorium. Right now the game is a powerpoint presentation (set up similar to jeopardy) off an old laptop running Powerpoint 2003. What I want to do is to purchase & use a smaller tablet/mini-book with a touchscreen. The touchscreen would be much more professional than dragging a mouse around the screen to select category questions. I also want to use hot keys during the presentation for sound effects (for correct + incorrect answers), and I want to play music and show an automated slideshow (photos from the day). This device would need vga or hdmi and audio out. I've been looking at iPads and iPad alternatives, but figured someone out there might have a better idea or done this before.
