• Using VBA to model data in Autodesk Inventor?

  I have a close friend who is using a specific device that records the dimensions of an object as it is eroded and outputs the dimensional data to an excel sheet. The object is spherical in nature but is eroded from the top and bottom, so the shape is constantly changing and a single formula for surface area and volume would not work. This is where Inventor comes in. My friend can plug the dimensional data to Inventor and it immediately returns the surface area and volume. The erosion process takes several minutes to complete and records data at very short intervals, so it would be very arduous to plug in the data thousand of time. Since Inventor supports macros and VBA, is there a way to plug the data into Inventor and output it into another spreadsheet? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

But when I use apache-ab to do a test, ab always show errors like this: ab -n 1 -c 1 http://127.0.0.1:1080/ apr_socket_recv: Connection reset by peer (104) I thought that I'm closing the socket too quickly, so I commented the close() function. But ab just hold, ab seems to be waiting for a complete response.

• Empty Synchronized method in game loop

  I am studying the gameloop used in Replica Island to understand a bit about Android game development. The main loop has the below logic... GameThread.java (note the variable names in sample code dont match exact source code) while (!finished) { if (objectManager != null) { renderer.waitDrawingComplete(); //Do more gameloop stuff after drawing is complete... } } I was curious to see what waitDrawingComplete actually does, but found its just an empty syncrhonized method! I guess it does nothing, am I missing something here? • Changing location after CommitAnimations

  I'm using the following code to move a UIImageView: shootImg.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"Projectile Left 1.png"]; [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil]; shootImg.center = CGPointMake(shootImg.center.x+1000, shootImg.center.y); [UIView commitAnimations]; This works but what I want to do is after [UIView CommitAnimations]; I want to set the location of shootImg using CGPointMake. If I just put it after commitAnimations then the animation doesn't fully complete. Any suggestions? I'm not using any frameworks like cocos2d and if you need to see any more code just ask.

  For more precision: I'm runnning Ubuntu 12.04 I'd like an indicator which shows up to the left of the date/volume/wifi icons If possible I'd like to be able to change the translation language The indicator could use internet based translators (google translate etc.) or have a complete library come with it so translations can be obtained offline. Relating to usability: I'd like to have it work in a way where you click on the indicator icon and you can start typing either directly or once a window has opened and it instantly shows the translation you need (with your target languages pre-set or determined in options).

• Staying concentrated during small pauses [migrated]

  My workflow includes some steps that make me wait for 0.5 to 2 minutes to complete: long remote git operations, creating / rebooting an instance in the cloud, etc. It's safe to assume that these operations cannot be made any faster. The resulting delays are the biggest flow-breakers for me. These are too long to just sit and stare at the progress indicators, but too short to take a walk and grab a coffee. Temptation to check some websites is big, and it's often a road to 20-30 minutes of procrastination + the time to get into the flow again. What are your coping strategies?

• What should I know before starting my first consulting project?

  I just got a job for a small project. I have all the relevant skills and knowledge to complete the project, but I am concerned about getting screwed over because this is my first time working on a consultant basis. We have already agreed on an hourly wage that I'm happy with, so that's not an issue. I'm just worried that since this is my first time working on my own, I'm going to make some mistakes that could be easily avoided if I had someone give me advice beforehand. This is what I already know to do/not do: -Get everything in writing -Limit the scope of the project. Once I start the actually coding, all features should be frozen. -Make sure to communicate constantly with my client. In addition he wants an max hourly cap. What is a good way to come up with one? • In terms of SEO, is it better to have a URL broken down by folder, or with dashed names?

  I am creating a friendly url interpreter for my website. I have read dozens of similar topics on this site, but none that seem to address my particular situation. What I want to know is if it's better to have: A well broken down URL where each category is represented by a folder domain.com/1036/OR/Lane/Lowell/Wetleau-Subdivision -OR- A URL which groups all of the categories and terms together domain.com/1036/Wetleau-Subdivision-Lowell-OR-Lane I am asking only in terms of what is best for SEO, not necessarily human readability. My thinking is that it may be better to group them all together like they are in the second example. My reasoning being that all of those terms represent the page and are more likely to draw a result. I am a complete SEO nub though, and I crave some expert guidance. Thank you in advance for any help given.

• How to build list of items available in World of Warcraft?

  There are a number of non-Blizzard sites that show a complete list of available items in World of Warcraft (such as wowhead, etc). I would like to know the best (easiest) way to compile a similar list. I believe some sites are based on user-entered input, which I would like to avoid. Looking at the lua API, it seems that there are functions to get a list of items, but it's not clear if I can just download everything (I remember a reference to throttling somewhere, can't find it now). Does anyone have code samples that would do this, or links to source? Also, Eve Online has made a database of items available (and I do mean SQL database file for download, not the Armory) - is there anything similar for Wow? I'm just looking for the names and stats, not the graphic icons.

• Should I create an Enum mapping to my database table

  I have a database table containing a list of systems relevant to the tool I am building, mostly in-house applications, or third-party systems we receive data from. This table is added to infrequently, approx every 2 months. One of these systems is Windows itself, which is where we store our users' LANs, and I now need to explicitly reference the ID relating to Windows to query for user name, team etc. I know it would be bad practice to embed the ID itself into the code, so my question is what would be the best way to avoid this? I'm assuming my options are: create a global constant representing this ID create a global enum containing all systems now create a global enum and add systems to it as & when they are required in the code retrieve the ID from the database based on system name I appreciate this may seem a trivial question, but I am going to have many situations like this during the course of this build, and although we are in complete control of the database I would like to conform to best practice as far as possible. • Do I have to release the code of a MIT licensed software running a GPL library?

  Lets say I'm using Node-Webkit, an MIT licensed app runtime. Now, let's say I decide to include a Javascript library which is GPL licensed: while I do not modify the downloaded JS file, I do write my own code making use of the library's functions. I plan to sell the final obfuscated executable and I'm wondering: what's the final license of the complete software? Do I only have to release the GPL library or does the GPL license apply for all the code I wrote? What happens to Node-Webkit's MIT license?

  I have a prospect with both an idea and an existing customer of theirs who want to pay for this idea to be implemented. The customer want to pay only when the implementation is complete. My prospect has separate investors that will fund the implementation. The prospect wants to know how much I will charge for the implementation so that he knows how much to ask the investors for. Before I can estimate reliably I need to work with the prospect to develop an implementation plan. This planning work will take time that I want to charge for. The prospect doesn't have enough money to pay me until the investment. I want to make sure I am paid for the planning. How can I resolve this?

• What steps should be taken to ensure that an open source database gets ready for production?

  I am considering using GridSQL in a production environment. However, I do have some indications that it is not ready. One is that it got excluded by the offering of EnterpriseDB a while ago, and the forums seem to report a few wrong results and relatively severe bugs. The alternatives to GridSQL, however cost around 100.000$ to buy, so I was thinking to utilize some of this money to ensure that GridSQL gets ready for production. At the same time, I could risk spending 50.000$ and months of work on the development of GridSQL, just to discover that the design was flawed and that a complete rewrite is needed. Then I would have to buy the commercial alternatives to GridSQL and the existence of my startup would be at risk. Question What steps would you take to ensure that there is as little risk as possible that the worst case scenario described above would happen? It is unrealistic that I could do much testing nor code review/coding myself (I am also not the best developer), so please describe where to find the guys that would need to do the work.

  Perhaps this is a question better suited for linux.se but since I have servers on all environments I was wondering what your favorite LiveCD is. Wiki defines this, for those unfamiliar, as a CD or DVD containing a bootable computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that they have the ability to run a complete, modern operating system on a computer lacking mutable secondary storage, such as a hard disk drive. Live USB flash drives are similar to live CDs, but often have the added functionality of automatically and transparently writing changes back to their bootable medium. I tend to stick with Knoppix, and today I have to register the machine on the network before I can get any of my utilities running via IP. Any suggestions?

• best practice for last-modified and created dates

  I have a website with a handful (currently 3; I anticipate about a dozen when it's complete) of static html pages. I'd like to include "created" and "last-modified" dates in the pages for the benefit of visitors who arrive a week or a month or a few years from now. I expect anyone who cares to be viewing the source, so I could do: <!-- created yyyy-mm-dd, last-modified yyyy-mm-dd --> but I'd like to use something more standard (and elegant). I've found one reference to last modified (but only a mention in the text, not an actual code reference, so I'm not positive how to properly implement it) but not created. Is there a proper way to display both (or at least one) of these dates?
