• Nvidia Drivers on Debian / Lenny (Stable) -> Installation successful -> Monitors gets black

  I have successfully installed the proprietary drivers for my nvidia (geforce 7300 gt) graphics card on debian/lenny. I know its not the best way to chose for driver installation ( see this link: http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#non-freedrivers ). but the two ways seem to be possible for me (nvidia-kernel module compilation). Now the problem is that the monitors gets black, the power light starts blinking after i launch the x-server. Have a short look a the logs (output truncated from /var/log/Xorg.0.log): (II) Setting vga for screen 0. • 3D in Windows 7 on Thinkpad R51

  I installed Windows 7 on my laptop, and now the 3D doesn't work. According to dxdiag DirectX 11 is installed, but when I open up World of Warcraft, this error comes up. World of Warcraft World of Warcraft was unable to start up 3D acceleration. Please make sure DirectX 9.0c is installed and your video drivers are up-to-date. There are no alerts from Windows to update any drivers. Why doesn't the 3D work?

• How to identify cause of system lock on debian squeeze?

  I have a desktop system at work with debian squeeze installed. Every couple days or so, when I come in in the morning, the system appears to be asleep and won't wake up. I suspect it goes into power save mode and then doesn't receive the wake up signal when I click the mouse or touch the keyboard. Does anyone know where I should look in order to start tracking this down? Like log files, etc? I doubt it, but maybe the fact that I'm using a mac aluminum usb keyboard and a wireless usb mouse (that has an off switch) has something to do with it? Maybe, when I turn my mouse off at the end of the day, the system loses track of the device somehow? I dunno :P. Thanks in advance.

Traffic from Host B to Host A: The source int/MAC is eth0/B0:B0:B0:B0:B0:B0, the destination int/MAC is eth0/AA:AA:AA:AA:AA:AA. Once the TCP connection has been established, Host B sends no further frames out eth5. The MAC address of eth5 expires from the bridge tables of both Switch 1 & Switch 2. Switch 1 continues to receive frames from Host A which are destined for B5:B5:B5:B5:B5:B5. Because Switch 1 and Switch 2 no longer have bridge table entries for B5:B5:B5:B5:B5:B5, they flood the frames out all ports on the same VLAN (except for the one it came in on, of course). Reproduce If you ping Host B from a workstation which is connected to either Switch 1 or 2, B5:B5:B5:B5:B5:B5 re-enters the bridge tables and the flooding stops. After five minutes (the default bridge table timeout), flooding resumes. Question It is clear that on Host B, frames arrive on eth5 and exit out eth0. This seems ok as that's what the Linux bonding algorithm is designed to do - balance incoming and outgoing traffic. But since the switch stops receiving frames with the source MAC of eth5, it gets timed out of the bridge table, resulting in flooding. Is this normal? Why aren't any more frames originating from eth5? Is it because there is simply no other traffic going on (the only connection is a single large data transfer from Host A)? I've researched this for a long time and haven't found an answer. Documentation states that no switch changes are necessary when using mode 6 of the Linux interface bonding (balance-alb). Is this behavior occurring because Host B doesn't send any further packets out of eth5, whereas in normal circumstances it's expected that it would? One solution is to setup a cron job which pings Host B to keep the bridge table entries from timing out, but that seems like a dirty hack.

• Windows 7: Server disappearing from Network window

  I am running a small (three computer) network on a Windows Server 2003 domain. All of the computers were just upgraded to Windows 7. Since the upgrade, the icon for the domain server periodically disappears from the Network window on all three computers. It doesn't happen at the same time on all computers--the icon typically disappears from one machine, but not the others. And it's not always the same computer. The network connection is still there--I can type \\myserver and get to the network shares. It's simply the icon that's disappearing. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions for a fix?   I'd like to set up my network like this, and I want to make sure it's possible using the hardware I have. I think it should be... I've got my cable modem in one room. I want to plug it into an Apple Airport Express and create my wireless my wireless network here. The airport express will do the NAT and DHCP. By my TV there are a few things to be networked (Xbox and Tivo). I have an airport extreme here. I'd like to have the airport extreme join the wireless network and share the connection to the ethernet ports. Can anyone provide some assistance on the best way to configure to do this? Thanks!

• Apache httpd workers retry

  I have an Apache httpd web server running mod_proxy and mod_proxy_balancer. The whole of /somedir is sent to 2 worker machines which service the requests using the round robin scheduler. Each worker machine is running IIS but I don't think that is important. I can demonstrate the load balancer working by repeatedly requesting a single page which contains the IP address of the machine and can see that it switches from one to the other in a predictable round robin fashion. If I switch off one of the IIS servers and start requesting the same page then each page only contains the IP address of the machine that is up. However, if I start IIS and don't run my IIS application then /somedir returns 500 (as it should). I've added 500 to the failonstatus (Apache 2.4) so when it hits the error Apache places the worker machine into error state. Apache still returns the proxy error to the client though. How can I make Apache catch the proxy failure and retry using a different worker in the same way that a connection failure does.   What is the purpose of blocking/dropping inbound ICMP traffic on a public web server? Is it common for it be blocked? I had to test if a server was accessible from various locations (tested on various servers located in different states/countries). I'd rely on ping as a quick & reliable method of determining if a server was online/network-accessible. After not receiving a response on a couple boxes, I tried using lynx to load the site, and it worked.

• TLS_REQCERT and PHP with LDAPS

  Problem: Secure LDAP queries via command-line and PHP to an AD domain controller with a self-signed certificate. Background: I am working on a project where I need to enable LDAP look-ups from a PHP web application to a MS AD domain controller that is using a self-signed certificate. This self-signed certificate is also using a domain name that is not a FQDN - think of something like people.campus as the domain name. The web application would take the user's credentials and pass them on to the AD domain controller to verify if the credntials are a match or not. This seems simple, but I am having problems trying to get PHP and the self-signed certificate to work. Some people have suggested that I changed the TLS_REQCERT variable from "request" to "never" within the OpenLDAP configuration. I am concerned that this might have larger implications such as a man-in-the-middle attack and I am not comfortable changing this setting to never. I have also read some places online where one can take a certificate and place it as a trusted source within the openldap configuration file. I am curious if that is something that I could do for the situation that I have? Can I, from the command line, obtain the self-signed certificate that the AD domain controller is using, save it to a file, and then have openldap use that file for the trust that it needs so that I do not need to adjust the variable from request to never? I do not have access to the AD domain controller and as a result cannot export the certificate. If there is a way to obtain the certificate from the command line, what commands do I need to use? Is there an alternate method of handling this issue that would be better in the long run? I have some CentOS servers and some Ubuntu servers that I am working with to try and get this going on. • Why is .htaccess not allowed in a directory but is allowed in another?

  I have apache2 installed on ubuntu 10.4 inside my var/www/ directory [amung others] I have a cakephp and a dvdcatalog directories. Each of which have CakePHP 1.3 installed. I can access them both via localhost/cakephp and localhost/dvdcatalog But the dvdcatalog shows up with no css styling. They both have these files: /var/www/cakephp/app/webroot/css/cake.generic.css /var/www/dvdcatalog/app/webroot/css/cake.generic.css But when I go to http://localhost/cakephp/css/cake.generic.css it sees the file but it does not see the file when I go to http://localhost/dvdcatalog/css/cake.generic.css I think this means the cakephp folder is able to use .htaccess and the dvdcatalog is not. I setup the cakephp directory last month when I was following in the blog tutorial. I am setting up the dvdcatalog directory now for a different tutorial. So I am not sure if I am missing a step. in my /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file I have this: <Directory "/var/www/*"> Order allow,deny Allow from all AllowOverride All </Directory> Which I thought gave .htaccesss to all. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is?

• Using IIS6 to run kill process. Executable hangs

There are no errors in the application log. It works locally. I noticed WScript.exe is in task manager every time I run the page, and never goes away. The process WScript.exe (and I tried others such a psexec.exe) is being run as a local user with admin rights (and I tried other types of users including domain admins) when run from IIS, but it works when run from the command line on the server.

• Getting Synergy+ to work with Windows 7 64bit and Windows XP 32bit?

  My Windows XP box is Dell 4550 dimension. Windows 7 box is Home Premium. Synergy + installs fine on the Windows 7box, but using Windows xp as the client, it won't work? Do I need to disconnect the vga connection from my monitor and control entirely from the win7 dvi connection? In setting up ( links ) on Windows 7 as the server, I have NO way of inputing info? The setup on the Windows xp box is simple and does so OK, but I can't connect to the Windows xp box! It must be the vga connection on the Windows XP box. In order to use both machines, I have to turn one off and the other on. Hence-the VGA is needed on Windows XP. Any info/help most appreciated.

• Http-Only cookies in WebLogic: what versions support them/how and why are they supported?

  We want to make all cookies set by our webapp http-only. I only have a basic understanding of the benefits of doing this but I'm told by security people that it's a Good Thing (tm) Our app is running under JDK1.6.05 and WebLogic10.3.0 After way too much digging around Oracle's website for documentation, I've found good evidence that the first version of WebLogic to support http-only cookies is 10.3.1. By "support," I mean the cookie-http-only deployment-descriptor element. Before we go about upgrading, I'd be nice to have these questions answered: 1a) Is it accurate that WL10.3.1 is the first version to support http-only cookies and that we're out of luck with 10.3.0? 1b) If we do indeed need to upgrade, is there an easy to do so under Windows? I've heard people mention an "upgrade jar" that you just stick in the classpath but I can't find any mention of this by Oracle. Does an easy way exist, or do we need to do a full-install of the new version? 2) What does the cookie-http-only deployment-descriptor element do when enabled? Will it ensure all cookies set by the application have an http-only=true attribute? Will it do more or less? Is there anything I'll have to do programmatically? 3) Is there anything in general I should know about http-only cookies, getting my web app to take advantage of them, or other security concerns?

  Am using ROXIO 1. to copy DVD file to my computer 2. to trim a section of the video 3. to convert the file to wmv and this is where Windows Vista gives the message that the program cannot continue. 4. I need to test the e-mail functionality of these applications, but I do not want them to send out actual e-mails. Is there a way to catch and redirect all outgoing e-mails? Ideally, I would like to send all outgoing e-mails to another e-mail (i.e., [email protected]) so my testers can look at them.

• Why is my DB read-only when attached to SQL Express, but not with SQL Web?

  I have an .mdf/.ldf pair, originally created in 2008 R2 Standard, and well under 10GB, with ACLs: d:\db snapshot\DB_NAME.mdf SERVERNAME\SQLServerMSSQLUser$ACCOUNT$MSSQLSERVER:F OWNER RIGHTS:F BUILTIN\Administrators:F d:\db snapshot\DB_NAME_log.ldf SERVERNAME\SQLServerMSSQLUser$ACCOUNT$MSSQLSERVER:F OWNER RIGHTS:F BUILTIN\Administrators:F When I attach the database to an instance of SQL Express 2008 R2, it comes up as read-only. When exactly the same acls and user-accounts and SQLCMD statements are set up with SQL Web 2008 R2, it comes up writable. I looked at MSDN's comparison page but nothing jumped out at me. Why on earth is this happening? Thanks! UPDATE I just noticed that the name of the attached databases are different. On SQL Express (read-only) it matches the filename (e.g. DB_NAME); on SQL Web (writable) it matches the CUSTOM_NAME that I gave it in the attach command: CREATE DATABASE [CUSTOM_NAME] ON (FILENAME = 'PATH_TO_MDF'), (FILENAME = 'PATH_TO_LDF') FOR ATTACH

• vsftpd with pam_winbind.so

  I'm trying to setup vsftpd to use logins from our domain. I want the ftp users to be able to login using their active directory username/password and have be able to have full access to /media/storage/ftp/username. I setup pptp using winbind and it is working fine, so I belive the issue is with vsftpd and pam. The ftp server runs and gives 530 for the login. I turned on debug for the pam module, but I see nothing in the syslog. • Excel transpose via paste

  I want to transpose data in Excel. Normally, I cut the cells I need, and use paste special - transpose. However, sometimes when I do paste special, a box comes up asking me if I want to use unicode text vs normal text. How do I transpose this text? Is there a way to get past the unicode dialog box and get to the normal Paste special dialog box (that has the 'transpose' option)? Or, is there another simple way to transpose cells? transpose = flip rows and columns IE 1, 2, 3 becomes: 1 2 3

  I have written a stored procedure in MSSQL Server 2008 R2 which sends emails when my Application logs errors. It works fine on servers at our office but when I ran it on our remote servers I got must issue a starttls command first So maybe there is a setting somewhere which is different between the two servers, and that's why it's working on one and not the other. • How do I access an Ubuntu VirtualBox guest at a static IP from an OS X host?

  How does one configure an Ubuntu guest to use a static IP that's visible to an OS X host, and ensure that the static IP is independent of the host's network configuration? I previously used bridged networking for my guest, but I'm constantly moving my host between networks so the guest IP is always different. • Generate metadata of all files in a dir?

  We are working on a project that is quite big, and its stored in an SVN repository under different folders with many files all over the place. Quite often, it is hard to locate the document that has a certain keyword or phrase. Does anyone know of any program that will generate and index the metadata of all the files that are in these documentation folders? (most filetypes are: xls, doc, ppt). Windows Search and Google Desktop could be an option but that would generally index the whole hard drive, emails, etc and thats probably much more than what we need and would not be suited for something more folder specific. Example of what im looking for: a program or webpage where i enter "John Doe" and it will show me all files in MyProjectFolder/ that contain the keyword "John Doe". This of course will already be indexed somewhere so searches should be almost instantaneous. Is there such a tool or i am asking too much? Thanks in advance!

• Strange RDP / Remote Desktop problem

  I'll try to be as specific as I can be: Server is running SBS 2008 R2 (with all updates) Server is connected to the internet Server has 2 NIC's, one is disabled Server is running RDP Service (accessible directly from the internet, I know, not as secure as it should be) Computers A and B are on the same local net. Computers A and B are both Windows 7. Users X and Y are both admins on the server Computer A can connect as user X to the server with mstsc Computer A can connect as user Y to the server with mstsc Computer B can connect as user X to the server with mstsc Computer B CANNOT connect as user Y to the server with mstsc! Error that username/password is incorrect. The last point is the problem, I get an authentication error. This used to work flawlessly for the last year. The server and desktops have been rebooted. EDIT: I tried: prefixing domain to the username prefixing the server computer name to the username change the password copy/paste the password from notepad to make sure it was correct I find it very strange.... EDIT: The computers are not on the same subnet as the server. The server is at my hosting provider. All computers as all users can reach the web app that is running on the server.

• Laptop Locking Up

  I am having a very weird issue on a Lenovo W510 laptop. It will lock up randomly. I have had it lock up during post, during the boot-up of Linux, during login, and after the login. The following are tests that I have performed on the laptop. I ran memtest I took out the extra memory module. I swapped the HDD with another HDD that had Windows 7 on it. (It BSOD'd, and before anyone could possibly read the error line, it restarts.) I tried taking the battery out and booting with only the Power cord. The only other options I can think of the problem being are the motherboard or the PSU. If anyone has any advice, I appreciate it. If not, the HP guy will be here in a few days to fix it. I would just love to call them up and tell them that the service is no longer needed.

• See network computer description in Explorer

  When viewing the list of network computers in Windows Explorer on a Win 7 machine there appears to be no way of readily seeing the description field, which makes that pretty well useless. I believe this problem started with Vista but I'm seeing it for the first time because I was fortunate enough to skip over Vista. We're currently rolling out Win 7 on new boxes and although I'm changing the naming system to something more sensible, the old boxes have names such as FWS01, FWS02, etc. Managing a network of computers with such names is made more difficult when you can't readily see who's machine each one is. Googling the problem brought up a workaround involving creating a shortcut on an XP machine and copying that to the Win 7 box but that's a long way from ideal. Is there some kind of hack that can be applied to machines, the operator of which needs to be able to see the description field?
