• System halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds

  I'm using Windows 7 on my HP ProBook 4250s. The problem I face is that my system halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds. These jerks are not letting me concentrate or work properly. This happens even when I'm just typing in notepad while no other application is running. I tried to install every driver from HP's website and there's no item in device manager marked with yellow icon. • Dell R910 with Integrated PERC H700 Adapter

  I am in the process of designing an architecture based around a single Dell R910 server running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. I would like the server to have 8 RAID1 pairs of spinning disks, so I intend to implement: Dell R910 Server Integrated PERC H700 Adapter with 1 SAS expander on each SAS connector (so 8 expanders in total) 7 RAID1 pairs of 143Gb 15K HDD, each paired on one connector using an expander 1 RAID1 pair of 600Gb 10K HDD, paired on the remaining connector using an expander My main concern is not to introduce bottlenecks in this architecture, and I have the following questions. Will the PERC H700 Adapter act as a bottleneck for disk access? Will using SAS expanders for each RAID1 pair cause a bottleneck or would this be as fast as pairing disks directly attached to the SAS connectors? Can I mix the disks, as long as the disks in each RAID1 pair are the same? I assume so. Can anyone recommend any single-to-double SAS Expanders that are known to function well with the H700?   What is the easiest way to permanently change association (program which opens etc.) for several file extensions at once? What I mean? Let's say you used TextEditorUncool up until now to open txt, dat, bat and abc files. Now you got TextEditorReallyCool and you wish if there was an application which on the left had a name of the program, and on the right a list of file extensions associated with it (which it, let's say, opens). Is there such a thing? Usually programs change this thing during installation (some even ask before), but in the case of portable programs one usually has to do it by hand, and for editors which open a gazillion of different file extensions, it gets tiresome really fast. All ideas welcomed !

  I use IE7 & IE8 disk images from microsoft and Virtual Box to test my websites in IE. One day I stopped being able to connect to the internet with virtual box, seemingly after trying to alter proxy related settings to view Hulu.com outside of the U.S... I don't know whether it's coincidence or not. Anyway, I am using the 'PCnet-FAST III (NAT)' adapter with virtual box. Can you guys help me troubleshoot this issue?   I need to make a change on all computers in our domain. Specifically I need to make a change to the Microsoft Exchange Proxy Settings. Our users have Outlook 2010 installed. These setting can be mannually accessed from: Control Panel - Mail - E-mail Accounts - (Select Account) - Change Account - More Settings - Connection Tab - Exchange Proxy Settings I need to have both the "On fast networks" and "On slow networks" check boxes selected. Obviously the idea of asking my users to go through the process above to make these changes is not ideal. Therefore I looking for advice on how I can automatically push these setting to my user base. I have seached the registry but I have been unable to find the location that this setting is saved. Thanks for any help!

  It seems like a good idea to use Google's public DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 because it's really fast -- much faster than my own ISP's DNS! -- and probably more reliable, too. That seems like a ridiculously quick win for me, and much easier to remember. Assuming we're not all "tin foil hat" about Google, why shouldn't everybody use Google DNS? Note: I've seen this question, but I don't want a comparison to OpenDNS. This is about everyday use by everyday people in their homes. • development and music recording machine suggestions?

  I wasn't sure if this belongs on SuperUser so flag if so. I am looking to build, primarily, a windows development machine that is also good for recording using Cubase. I know I should use seperate machines but I'm on a budget this time of year. I also havn't kept up with hardware for quite a few years. Basically I know I want quad core, multiple monitor support (no gaming requirements). A lot of RAM, very quiet case and super fast HDD (SSD OR 10,000RPM)for compiling and latency. I will store libraries and other data on a USB drive. Sound card is not needed as I will be using an audio interface, all other music recording equipment is taken care of also. I could do with some decent monitor recomendations also. All suggestions welcome, thanks.

Apache, PHP, Python, etc, are Linux programs that get ported to Windows - I'm 90% sure of this Unless the web server needed to run ASP, I wouldn't use Windows. My boss' IT friend is a Windows guy, though. He recently got a server setup in the office to run Microsoft Exchange and some other shit. What I'm asking is, if he wanted to start running websites on this thing, what would be good reasoning to convince him otherwise? He's not very bright in terms of IT and the IT friend is all Windows. So it's two against one here... What would you say to running a Windows web server?

• Internet connection slower than network connection speed

  I've got a computer connected to a wireless router on a different floor. When I look at the network connection, I'm told the signal strength is low, and that I've got a connection of about 26mbps (often higher). However, my internet connection on that machine is very slow. Speedtests show it at about 1-2mbps, and it really shows when loading pages and video. I have fiber optic internet access, and the machine that's connected to the router/modem via cable gets the 20mbps on speed tests, and is extremely fast in every day use. My question is, is the advertised 26mbps+ connection speed perhaps inaccurate, and that my wireless bandwidth is the likely bottleneck here? Or is the signal strength what's key here? And what might I do about this? Power cycling the router helped a bit, a speed test went as high as 6mbps after doing that.

• Slow Jquery Animation

  I have this webpage : http://miloarc.pyrogenicmedia.com/ Which atm is nothing special. It has a few effects but none that break the bank. If you mouse over a tile, it should change it's opacity to give it a fade effect. This is done through the Jquery Animation, not through CSS (I do this so it can fade, instead of being a straight change). Everything looks nice when the page loads, and the fades look perfect. Infact if you drag your mouse all over the place, if gives you a "trail" almost like a snake. Anyway, My next problem is that you will see there is a box in the top left, which is going to tell you information about the tile you are hovering over. This seems to work fine. When you mouse over that information box, it switches it's position (So that you can reach the tiles that were previously hidden underneath it). From my understanding, this is all working fine, and to the letter. However, After one move of the info box (One hover). Viewing the page in Firefox turns slugish. As in, after a successful move of the info box, the fade effects become very stuttered, and it doesn't pick up events as fast meaning you can't draw a "trail" on the screen. Chrome doesn't have this issue. It seems to work fine no matter what. Safari also seems ok. Although I do notice if I move my mouse really fast, it does jump a bit but not as much as firefox. Internet explorer doesn't work at all. Seems to crash the browser... And there is an error with the rounded corner plugin im using (Not sure why...). All in all, I think whatever I'm doing inside my code must be heavily sluggish. But I don't know where it is happening. • Paint.NET equivalent for Linux?

  On Windows, my favorite image editor is Paint.NET. However, on Linux, GIMP is as unfriendly as photoshop despite having less features. (i.e. It takes ages to load, their's far too much stuff). Most of my image editing is simple things where Photoshop or GIMP would be overkill. Paint.NET does not run on Wine or Mono. So is there any similar fast and simple but powerful image editor available for Linux? EDIT: There is a Mono version available, but I don't want to have to deal with installing svn versions of mono, and compiling the version myself.

I have a web application with its respective site collection and sites, i have anonymous access allowed for all the sites with forms authentication. Everything is working fine but i don't know how to login with the administrator account from the internet. With Windows auth you have the "login" link and you just have to use your admin credentials, how can i do that with forms auth?? Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm basically doing rsync -a ~ example.com:backup/ However there are loads of large files, e.g. wikipedia dumps etc. Most of the files I care a lot about a small, such as firefox cookie files, or .bashrc. Is there some invocation to rsync that will exclude files that are over a certain size? That way I could copy all files that are less than 10MB first, then do all files. That way I can do a fast backup of the most important files, then a longer backup of everything else.

My webstore will have <1000 SKUs and I'm not expecting the traffic without going into thorough SEO/PPC. Now I have three questions: Do I really need Nginx microcaching along with eaccelerator? Do I need AWS Elastic Load Balancer with t1.micro tier for the sake of scalability (as I have heard that magento is resource hungry application, may fully utilize t1.micro AMI) or can I replace AWS ELB with Nginx load balancer? In AWS Elastic Beanstalk?

• Best practice? Using DPM to backup VMs within each VM or through the host?

  We've got two Hyper-V hosts running multiple VMs (all flavors of Windows Servers). One of the VMs is running MS Data Protection Manager 2010, which runs beautifully (most of the time) and is connected to a separate NAS via iSCSI for the DPM storage. I noticed when I installed the DPM agent on the Hyper-V hosts, it enumerates the VMs in the DPM Protection listing. I don't want to burn through my storage space too fast with duplicate protection, so I was wondering: Is it recommended to back up VMs through the host, or is it better to install the DPM agent on each VM and backup as I would any other machine? It would seem as though most people (currently including me) do it the second way, but is there any advantage to including the entries under HyperV (Backup using Child Partition Snapshop)?

• RAID0 array of USB 2 disks, both connected to a single hub. Any benefit?

  I have two unused USB 2 drives. I wanted to stripe them in a RAID0 configuration for fast disk access for virtual machines. (I find running a VMware virtual machine off a USB2 drive to be painfully slow. Especially Windows Vista) If I have both USB drives attached to the same USB2 hub, will that negate any benefit I gain by creating a RAID0 array? That is to say, is the speed of USB2 the limiting factor or is the speed of the drives? Would I get better performance by attaching one or both drives directly to my computer?

• Is an Intel Atom D525 suitable to run MythTV

  I have an oldish netbook with an Atom N450 (1.6GHz, 512KB cache) - I've been using it to experiment with MythTV, but it seems really slow, even just to work through the menus! Seconds, sometimes 10 or 20s, to load a new menu. Admittedly from a remote backend, but my older Core1 based laptop seems to be fine with the same setup. I was hoping to use one of the so-called "nettop" devices which currently seem to be D525-based (1.8GHz, 1MB cache) - is double the cache really going to make that much difference? Or has the internal architecture of the Atom moved on leaps and bounds in between? Given that I design non-Intel embedded computers for a living I was hoping to get lots of hardcore architecture detail from the Intel website, so I could see for myself, but I can't find it! So: will a D525 be fast enough to run a MythTV backend/frontend combined box?

• Running PHP 5.2 FastCGI + Apache on CentOS 5 issue

  I am trying to setup 2 versions of PHP on Centos 5.9 using this tutorial: http://linuxplayer.org/2011/05/intall-multiple-version-of-php-on-one-server. I have followed I have installed default 5.4.19, and I was trying to setup another 5.2.17 PHP version to be run with Fast CGI and I followed the second part completely. However, when I try to run http://web2.example.com it returns 500 error message. In the apache log there are only 2 lines that repeat: [notice] mod_fcgid: call /var/www/web2/index.php with wrapper /usr/local/php52/bin/fcgiwrapper.sh and [notice] mod_fcgid: process /var/www/web2/index.php(25250) exit(server exited), terminated by calling exit(), return code: 255 Please note that I had to add .php at the and of the FCGIWrapper because apache would not start without it: FCGIWrapper /usr/local/php52/bin/fcgiwrapper.sh .php Also please note that http://web1.example.com with PHP 5.4.19 is working absolutely fine. Please help. Thank you very much in advance.

• Strange DNS problem [seems to be IPv6 issue]

  Hi, I'm experiencing strange problems with my Kubuntu 9.10 when doing DNS requests from various applications. The requests are extremely slow, so loading any pages in Firefox or Konqueror, doing package installations in Kpackagemanager and other apps is really painful, while for example Opera doesnt have any problems, and ping is normally fast as well for DNS pings. I checked the proxy settings of both the used applications as well as of the general system and there are none, so to me it doesn't seem as there was something inbetween.. Does anybody have an idea on what to check for possible problem sources or how to solve this ? I'm behind a DSL home router which does the DHCP (and works well with my other computer). Any kind of advice would be really helpful. Edit: It seems to be some kind of IPv6 problem, as I could get it to work by disabling IPv6 explicitly in Firefox. Is there a general solution to this ?

• Clicking hyperlinks in Email messages becomes painfully slow

  Running Windows 7 (RC, 64 bit). Suddenly, today, after months without a problem, clicking on links has become extremely slow. I've noticed this in two places. (1) clicking hyperlinks in Outlook email messages, which launches Firefox, takes around a minute. Launching Firefox by itself is instantaneous - I have an SSD drive and a very fast CPU. (2) opening Word documents attached to Outlook email messages also takes a surprisingly long time. The only thing these two might have in common is that they use the DDE mechanism, if I'm not mistaken, to send a DDE open command to the application. Under Windows XP this problem could sometimes be fixed by unchecking the "Use DDE" checkbox in the file type mapping, however, I can't find any equivalent under Windows 7.   Hello all, Recently, I could not access the webpage bbc.co.uk anymore, while I can access other websites smoothly. Ar first, I though there may be some problem with my laptop. However, if I use my laptop through my company network, I can load the page bbc.co.uk normally. Then, I though maybe my ADSL at home blocks that web address. However, I tried another laptop with my home ADSL and it can load the page bbc.co.uk very fast. Now I do not know what could be the problem. Can anyone tell me please? Thank you.
